"Hey, Percy? Thanks for yesterday. I just wanted to thank you again." Annabeth blurted out beside him in class.
Percy hummed contentedly and smiled, not sparing a glance as he scribbled down on his paper. "Again, it's no problem." He smirked. "I assume your going to be a bit more friendly to me now, or...?"
"Yeah, you wish."
"Tch. It was worth a try."
Annabeth bit back a smile that threatened to paint itself across her face. Okay, so Percy wasn't a pretty bad guy. Well, Annabeth truly knew that already from the start. He wasn't rude or cold. Just annoying towards her and even more irritating. Over the course of the day, he reduced the stares and teasing remarks, which she liked. But that being said, he only reduced them. Cue him today.
His friends had completely surrounded him in the halls. Not everyone was there, though- only a few people. One of which Annabeth recognized as Grover. She could tolerate him. They spoke regurarily, him being a part of the student council too. He couldn't attend the last few meetings however, something about the garden club. It was a small world.
"Oh, I would love it if you came to my practise today! That would be great." Percy smiled flirtatiuously at the girl who was chatting with him. Her tight button-up shirt made of thin fabric was un-buttoned at the top, showing some amount of cleavage that if she shifted the shirt down a bit more, it would be considered indecent. The girl giggled and batted her eyelashes, waltzing away once she got a reply.
As said before: While Percy was oblivious 99% of the time, he wasn't completely. At times like that he flirted right back with zero hesitation whatsoever. He smirked inwardly.
"Annie!" Percy ushered her over once he caught a glimpse of her. That caused a few curious side glances from the people that surrounded him. "Hey!"
Annabeth looked straight at him and scoffed. "Uh...Hi." Mot wanting to engage in any more conversation, she quickly started to walk, a futile attempt.
"Oh, wasn't that Annabeth?"
"Annabeth as in the student council president? That was her?"
"How do you know her, Percy?"
"She's a friend of mine." A smug look on his face mocked her as she stopped, glaring. "Speaking of which, she's coming to my practise today. Isn't that right?"
She sighed and turned away, saying a quick and cold "No." in response. What was he doing? She owed him, yes, but he didn't have her approval. She definitely wasn't going to come by. Especially if the people around him were glaring at her in a menacing manner. A chill ran down her spine as she trudged down the hall, to whichever class was next.
Oh hell no. It was science already?
"Alright, everyone take a seat beside your partner for the energy transfers project." The science teacher ordered around, taking a place at her desk. "And keep the talking to a minimum- Grover! Stop trying to eat that tin can!" She rolled her eyes and started typing away at her laptop seated atop her hardwood desk to do whatever teachers did during class.
Snickers rang out throughout the class, earning a sheepish look from grover who held a piece of tin at his mouth. It was a rare coincidence that today of all days Percy wouldn't be sitting next to her. Instead sat Juniper, one of her good friends.
"O-oh, I seriously hate this.." She muttered while adjusting the items on the table that she and Annabeth shared. A pile of paper that held weeks worth of notes, a few copper wires and a battery, as well as a lightbulb. A few other items were also scattered. The little assesment or project as the teacher said was just an expiriment about the ways energy could be transferred.
"It's a good thing you're my partner, then," Annabeth gave a lopsided smile.
"I don't get it. How are you so damn smart!?" Juniper groaned, attactching some wires together. All whilst wearing safety gloves and glasses, of course. Annabeth helped her out, taking some wires and connecting them properly.
"Hey, you're smart too, y'know. Science just may not be your strongsuit." And Annabeth was right. Juniper was a top student in most of her classes, except for this class. Nonetheless she was a great student. Juniper blew a strand of ginger hair from her face and smiled at her in a thanking way.
At the back of the class, Percy and Beckendorf were absolutely dumbstruck with the project. More like it was only Percy. Beckendorf whizzed away with the wires and batteries, seeming like an expert with the way he was working. He was currently in the midst of connecting everything together, sucsessfuly lighting up the lightbulb with zero instructions. Even the teacher was impressed, along with everyone seated around them.
"Amazing! Higher marks for Charles. Everyone can learn something from him." The teacher said happily. She quickly went back to her laptop after saying so. Beckendorf grinned at Percy.
"Show off."
"If you don't know what the fuck you're doing, just say that." He laughed, the lightbulb's glow starting to fade. Percy slammed his face on the desk in response.
"You're right. I have no idea what i'm doing." He groaned miserably, not bothering to look up to see the look of dissaproval on the teachers face. Over the last year, his grades were just enough to keep him and his dignity afloat. But now? He was surely going to fail. No! He wouldn't dare let himself think that way, no matter how true it was.
"That's rough, buddy." Beckendorf went back to his work, scribbling down a few notes and reading them, evaluating back and forth. He serioulsy looked like he knew what he was doing. Only Percy could dream of being like that.
"If you want, I can send you some notes later. And the answers for the homework." Beckendorf laughed as he saw Percy's face brighten up.
"Really? Thank you! I really owe you one." Percy beamed as he sat up straighter in his chair. Thank god Beckendorf wasn't the type of person that made fun of his academic abilities. Unlike Annabeth.
After a long and tiring period, but not long enough for Annabeth, science was long gone. And then the rest of the subjects. And then the end of the day, finally. Much to her surprise the student council meeting was postponed for today. Many of the members couldn't make it or had to cancel, and with the aproval of the co-president (Beckendorf; since he was one of the oldest and everyone was friendly with him) it was cancelled. And Annabeth would have been glad if a certain someone's offer to come to his practise wasn't on her mind.
Its not like she would willingly go, ever. Under no circumstances. But she was supposed to do a check on the clubs for the meeting today, and why not start with the swimming club? It was actually Clarisse's job to do a check, but let's not dwell on the details.
The chilling smell of chlorine filled Annabeth's senses. A lot of people turned up, despite it being a practise match against some in-area school. The huge room was two floors tall- the second over looking the pool along with everyone else. Annabeth walked up the stairs hastily and looked around, placing her bag on the cold tile ground. The crowd mostly consisted of what Annabeth assumed to be his fangirls, and by God they were talking oh so loudly. Even Annabeth could hear their chatter from up there.
Their squeals only got louder when Percy's team exited the changing rooms and into the pool room. The other team, Sranite High, also got some attention- but clearly not as much as Goode's.
"Good luck, Percy!"
"BEAT THEIR ASSES, GOODE!" Annabeth nearly choked from laughter at that one.
"Just swim or whatever! WIN!"
Percy, clad in some swim shorts and nothing else, waved at the bleachers and the crowd that awaited. He winked at a group of girls and they all blushed up a storm, lovestruck expressions and heart eyes on their faces. Annabeth scoffed at the cliche move, leaning on the steel railings as she watched intently.
Goode's team consisted of eight people. Percy, being their captain. Annabeth knew some of them from around the halls, and she was even friendly with some of them. For example, Rin. Rin was more of an aquaintance of a friend, though. He was a great swimmer and a even better teammate, as Annabeth watched above. She had a clear birds eye view of everything.
Not everyone on the bleachers was for Percy. Friends, classmates, even some strangers were there, cheering on for Goode and Sranite. Percy looked around with a sultry smile on his face. But it soon dropped when he did a full 360 and came to a stop. It seemed like he was looking for something, perhaps? What could he possibly be looking for?
"Hey, Percy." Oliver, a teamate ushered him over. "We're up first. It's freestyle. One hundred and fifty meters."
Percy quickly erased the visible frown on his face and replaced it with a smile. "Great! Let's start," He walked over to the starting positions at the edge of the pool, along with three other members of Goode, and four from Sranite. Lined up in a neat and organized way, they all waited for the whistle to blow, signalling the start. Each one of them took up one of the eight lanes.
"..." The water that was so calm and still would soon be ruined with the splashes of the swimmers. Annabeth frowned, thinking of how calm the water looked. Oh well.
'FWEEET!'
And so it began, Percy taking the lead from the very start. Impressive, but Ananbeth thought it must've been luck than anything else. But she soon came to relalize that wasn't the case. The other swimmers were preety good themselves. They had impressive speed and all, but next to nothing compared to the sea-green eyed boy.
Now, swimming one hundred and fifty laps took about two minutes for the average swimmer, meaning one minute and thirty seconds per lap. At least that was an estimate made by Annabeth. Percy on the other hand... He was something else. Easily gliding through the water, each arm slicing into it. It was graceful. Amazing. Not to mention fast.
A minute and thirt secs, you say? Percy did that in nearly one minute. But how!? By the time he finished, the others were just about starting their final lap. Annabeth was absolutely dumfounded. She couldn't move a muscle, honing in on Percy.
"Wow..." Gaped a student from the crowd. Someone from Sranite, Annabeth assumed. "I guess what they said really was true. Well, that's a national level swimmer for ya."
"Damn! That Jackson dude's fast. Imagine what the first in the nation is like!"
"Oh my god he's so hot." A girl drooled as she said that, earning a few suggestive looks from the others surrounding her. Well, was Percy hot?
'I mean, I guess?' Annabeth murmured to herself. He looked graceful like this, focused deep in concentration as he did what he loved. Annabeth liked someone who had a lot of passion in what they did. Percy was a walking- or swimming- example of that. Not to mention his slightly messy hair, and the tight-fitting shorts on him. As well as the fact that Percy was shirtless, his well-defined chest on display.
The other teammates took turns, rotating every now and then. Rin was extrodinary out there. He swam a little rough, but.. He was a fast swimmer, like Percy. Though not quite on his level. With some practise, Ananbeth was sure he would come close to him.
Sranite was exceptional. At one point, a swimmer caught a glance at her and smiled, more flirtatiously than friendly. Annabeth simply brushed it off and looked the other way. Speaking of which, Annabeth needed to hurry off soon. She got caught up by this practise that she didn't keep track of the time. It was getting a little late, so she started to pick up her bag and walk down the stairs.
That was, until the swimmers got up and started to end the practise. As they got out, Annabeth saw all their well-structured bodies and nearly tripped on her own two feet. She was level headed most of the time, give her that. But in the end.. She was a teenage girl! What else was she supposed to do?
'Shit. Get a grip, Annabeth!' She chided herself and made an attempt to slam the pool room's doors open. But that wasn't made possible by the one and only Percy.
"You made it!" Percy said. He placed a hand on her shoulder. He turned, looking at his teammates. "See? I told you guys she would!"
"For your information, I'm here on student council terms. And we barely even know each other, so don't go getting all cocky." Annabeth pulled his hand off and sighed. No matter how Annabeth looked on the outside, she was inwardly struggling to keep her eyes level in a desperate try to not look down.
Percy took notice of this. "Aw, do you like what you see?" He gestured to himself, arms spread out. Was his daily mission to get her to blush? Well, it had worked.
Scoffing and looking away, Annabeth scrambled for a reply that wasn't 'Gods, yes, I do.' Or 'More, please.' Instead came out was:
"I'll try to keep my hormones in check."
"You sure will."
"You're a pain in the ass, you know that?"
"I've been told that."
"Ugh." Annabeth looked over his shoulder where the beautiful exit stood. "Yeah, I'm gonna take my leave now."
With that, Annabeth literally sprinted out of there like a woman on a mission. A mission to go home that was. She missed the judging stares of his 'Fan club' (Percy liked to call his fans that) and the jealous gazes. And to be completely frank Annabeth didn't give a fuck whatsoever.
Percy was overjoyed. Overjoyed that the one and only Annabeth Chase came to his practise! Did she see his flawless swims? His outstanding time? She did! But unfortunately, he did not get the attention he wanted.
"You know her?" A teammate asked Percy in the changing rooms. "She's hot."
"She definitely is. But she's just a friend of mine." Percy said, tugging his light blue sweatshirt on.
"Cool, can you give me her number?"
"Nope!"
"Why not?"
"I don't know it." Percy lied through his teeth. The teammate dropped the subject gloomily. Percy was sure he had good intentions, but Annabeth was his friend! His!
Percy exited the chlorine-smelling room and shouldered his bag. Would some creeps be out at this time? He hoped not. Well, he didn't care much about his safety. More about Annabeth's. Percy didn't understand how anyone could be so... Disgusting. Percy snarled at the thought. Grover, his best friend waited at the front of the school for him. He waved at Percy through the window of his car, unlocking the doors so he could enter.
"Hey," Grover greeted as he entered.
"Hello," Percy said, flopping his wet, sweaty body in the leather seats of his car.
"Excuse you! You're all gross, so quit making a damn mess!"
"Ughh..." Percy slouched down the seat, too tired more than anything to put up a fight.
