Toad is a Great Western break van. He came to the island of Sodor with Oliver and Isabel when they wanted to escape being scraped, Toad would later become Douglas' break van as token of appreciation for helping with Oliver's escape. One day Douglas was sent to the works, Duck was told to take one of Douglas' goods trains where Toad was coupled at the back. "Oh, hello Mr Duck." Toad said kindly, "Are you here to help with Mr Douglas' trains?" "Yes I am." Duck replied, "Beg pardon, but I hope you don't mind." "Oh I don't mind." Toad said. Duck set off with the goods train to Arlesburgh. Toad looked out and saw the beauty of the seaside, he could see the children playing at the beach.
Duck arrived at Arlesburgh and uncoupled from Toad so he can return to passenger duties. Toad watched Duck & Oliver pass by and looked at the small engines loading ballast and giving passengers rides, but things would soon change. Dark stormy clouds came and rain poured down onto the tracks below. Another goods train was scheduled and Duck was the only engine available, Toad was coupled two the back and the two head off.
The rain began to get heavier and heavier. Unbeknownst to Duck that a part of the railway outside Tidmouth Hault had been flooded from a the large downpour, the signalman situated outside the station was warned about this and set the signal to red for danger. Duck looked up and saw a red signal, he put on his breaks, but from the rain on the tracks, he slipped past the signal, the guard put on his Toad's breaks as well so there might be a better chance to slow down, but before they knew it, it was too late. Duck splashed into the flooded part of the track with Toad followed suit. Duck's fire was extinguished and was unable to move. Both him and Toad had to wait until help could arrive.
Toad began to have a small laugh. "What's so funny?" Duck questioned. "Oh, I'm sorry Mr Duck." Said Toad, "But I find it funny that were are a toad and a duck in the water." Duck looked forward and began to have a little chuckle, "That is funny. I didn't think that we'd end up in the water." The two shared a few other laughs to pass the time until Donald arrived with a chain attached to his tender, "Urr ye ready back thare Duck?" "I'm ready." Duck replied. Donald heaved Duck and the goods train out of the flooded section of the track. The chain was uncoupled and the Caledonian engine had to take the train to Tidmouth and then take Duck to the works so he can get the water removed from his firebox.
The next day and the stormy weather cleared revealing the lovely blue summer sky again, Duck returned and Toad was being cleaned and getting some excess water removed, "That was a funny time. Wasn't it Mr Duck?" "Sure was Toad." Duck replied, "I hope we could work again some time." Duck soon head off and Toad watched as the Great Western engine headed off with a passenger train.
