A/N: I'll clean this story up once I get the chance. For now, you guys try to ignore any errors. Thank you.
They had traveled for one day until everything came at an impasse.
One comment led to another and before they knew it, father and daughter were stuck in a shouting match with hate and frustration lacing their words.
She had tried to blame him.
Blame him for being what he was born as.
Yet, it quickly became apparent that he had been prepared for such words.
Prepared for a rebuttal mixed with harsh truths and realizations.
"Kagome Higurashi, you forget I have watched you grow up. I have seen your power. Let us not pretend that we are oblivious to the war that is occurring and the fact that you have a foot on each side." His voice boomed, and for that split moment, Kagome feared him.
"You are half priestess and half mage from the most power families and you would shame me? For the decision to bring you in this world?" His voice was low now, almost like a hiss as his anger released.
"You mother knew exactly what we were, and still she provided what she could. It was enough to ensure our survival and yet you still think we are doomed to your inexperienced judgment?!"
His words stung, yet she refused to back down.
"You are the reason I am away from her!" It was selfish, she knew, but it didn't stop her resentment.
"It was her decision, Kagome. You underestimate your mother and I would not recommend such an action."
Their battle of words would have continued, but the wolf prince attempted to de escalate with an interruption.
"As long as she is safe, and you are safe—is that not enough?" His words were quiet, but filled with curiosity aimed towards the priestess.
"Enough?" She hissed, and briefly, she debated what she ever saw in the wolf during their first encounter.
"I want my mother with me."
Why did she have to explain this? Why did they not understand.
Did they not have mothers?
Her father?
Koga?
Did they not understand this desire?
The need to be with their family?
"Would you put her at risk for your wants?"
This time, his words made her halt.
At risk?
"She would be murdered here—a powerful priestess. Yet, in your home, she would have to be forced to give her dying breath defending you. You wish for this?" He spoke with calculation and calmness, but his eyes sparked with frustration.
She wanted to bite back but instead, tears began to form and she wanted nothing more than to hit him for allowing such a weakness to surface.
No, she didn't wish for that.
She didn't wish for any of this.
She had just wanted a normal life.
"Sometimes survival is enough, Kagome. Sometimes it all we can ask for."
He was right.
She knew it.
But she hated him for being so practical about such an absurd situation.
"But—" and her words stuttered and tears began to form once again.
The wolf nodded grimly in understanding.
"I miss her" she managed to choke out before the flood of tears overtook her.
God, she did.
She missed her.
She worried for her.
She wanted to be back with her.
"She's my mother—" she hiccuped in between tears, trying to get them to understand.
"And she still is." This time, his voice was gentle as he slowly rubbed her back trying to calm her.
Nodding, she wiped her tears away.
Did he have a mother that he had loved dearly?
Had he lost her?
Did he know how she was feeling?
"And—and, I hurt her." Her mind couldn't rationalize it. How she could be a danger to someone she loved so much. How such a thing could happen without even her knowledge.
"You did not. She only offered what she could. Not enough to cause her discomfort."
Briefly, she had forgotten about her father since he had been so silent.
And just like that, something snapped.
"Only?!"
She wanted to throttle him.
Scream until he understood.
Her mother had put her well-being aside for the both of them, and still her father acted as it was a simple act.
Did he not realize how much she had loved him?
Or the bedtime stories she would tell Kagome of how they met? How they fell in love?
Yet, this whole time, they had been putting her life in jeopardy.
"She loved you. Show her some respect!"
Apparently, such words were too harsh. The moment they escaped her, she knew he would react.
And he did.
Instinctively, she noted the quick motion of his hand raising as if ready to slap her.
But the impact never came.
Instead , the wolf prince was in front of her within seconds, glaring at her father as he held the Mages hand in mid air.
"You will regret your actions—don't."
His words were simple, and apparently enough.
For her father lowered her hand, glared at her and suddenly departed.
"You may watch her for the night!" His words were cold as he stormed away, without so much as looking back.
"I understand. You are back in the land that is safest for you but at the expense of your mother."
He took a breath and continued.
"Your father, well, it seems that you two are not as—close?"
Kagome let out a curt laugh.
Close?
They had been.
Until all his lies had surfaced.
"Be careful, Kagome—it is much easier to judge than to understand what another may be feeling."
Embarrassed and caught off guard, she wondered how he knew all the thoughts in her heads.
"I don't understand him though!" To such a statement, the wolf prince grinned.
"You made that quite clear."
Scanning through what he knew of her father, he tried to assist.
"Did you know that your father was the last of his kind? It terrified him. So much so, that he left his homeland to find a mate—" he began and noticed instantly that her attention was drawn.
"In this land, many were wary of mating with a twilight mage. The power to syphon—well, as you've discovered, it can cause complications."
Her eyes widened, and still, she continued to listen.
"The royal houses that could ensure a successful and healthy mating ceremony had no female candidates left. Not after the war. Not after the sisterhood had made sure to kill all females that were of child bearing age."
He watched her, carefully, and noted when realization hit her.
"The sisterhood?" Her voice shook, and he knew she was beginning to put together all the information.
Nodding, he allowed her time to process the rest of the information.
"Many died. The house of the Wolf and the House of the Moon were hit the hardest."
Then, her questions came.
"Your family too...?"
He felt her heart shatter as realization took hold.
"My sister, yes. There were many deaths—including your fathers intended at the time."
And just like that, he seemed to have provided her with the missing puzzle piece for her fathers behavior.
Just when he thought they both held the same thoughts, she provided him with information he had overlooked.
"Koga, you don't understand. My mother was inchargeof the sisterhood." Her voice had been barely a whisper, but he heard it nonetheless.
With it, came a growl that he could not contain.
