Robin didn't show up again. At least not within a timeframe that Wally would consider not long. Which meant that Wally was bored.
Bored and hungry and tired as well. But he didn't dare to sleep just yet. What if they just put him back in the cell? Wally wanted to be able to talk about it, maybe even make an argument for himself. Surely, they could figure things out. And Robin had to be sick of playing food delivery as often as Wally needed it?
He sighed. He was two and a half movies in when he really felt like getting a snack. His stomach growled loudly, as if it echoed his thoughts perfectly and…it probably did. Food had been on his mind the last entire movie but he was too afraid to just get up and leave. What would he do out there anyway? He had no money with him.
His stomach gurgled again. Groaning, Wally let his head fall backwards and stared at the ceiling as he attempted to manifest some food or money from sheer willpower. When that didn't work he closed his eyes, trying to manifest at least Robin. Or even Oracle! She would be able to get a hold of Robin. At least in a better way than he did.
Opening his eyes, Wally barely lifted his head, just enough to glance over to the cot. He still had that glove Robin gave him but…what if Robin had had some trouble? He didn't want to disturb him if it meant jeopardizing the others safety.
But he was hungry….
A noise behind him drew Wally's attention away from his hunger and he lifted his head properly to turn to the side, only to see Batman walk up to him. Without a mask.
Wally immediately turned back to look back into the cell, trying not to look like he had looked at Batman's face for more than a second. He had looked tired too. Why was he even up already?!
A presence to his right made him look from the corner of his eye before he quickly looked away again. But the sound of something hard tapping against glass drew his attention back. Only then did Wally notice the offered glass. There was a smoothie like liquid in it and Wally carefully took it.
"Thank you," he said and looked into the glass, before taking a sip of it.
"I added some nutrients, since Robin will still need some time." Batman sounded exhausted as he moved into the cell and sat down on the cot.
Wally stubbornly stared into his glass and when he felt that he couldn't anymore he glanced up at the monitor, ignoring the barred face.
"Oracle told me that…what are you doing?" Batman asked slowly.
"...I'm not looking."
"You're…not looking." Batman echoed.
Wally nodded and hid behind the glass as he downed half of the smoothie.
He heard Batman sigh. "I unmasked you within seconds after finding you. I also know that you know who I am."
That…was an argument. Wally fought with him for a moment until he actually looked at Bruce. It felt weird, which had more or less been his main reason, rather than being ridiculously polite about the entire thing.
"Good. Oracle told me you freed us by…exploding an entire wall?"
"Uh-huh." Wally made a confirmatory noise before quickly adding a "Imploded actually," after a second. He hadn't seen his dimension's Batman without the cowl that often. Usually, he just saw him as Batman or as Bruce. Never really just…unmasked. The tossed hair sticking in every directly was actually very attractive.
"Which means you could have gotten out of this cell anytime you wanted. And run away too, without anyone catching you." Bruce's face was serious, despite the dark circles underneath his eyes. "Why didn't you?"
"I said it already and I will say it again: How would that have made me look? Imagine if I were to simply step through your fancy glass door and tried to talk it out with you. Not a very good first impression," he huffed out and took an aggravated sip of his smoothie. It was almost gone… "On top of that, you weren't even paying attention to me. Don't you talk to people that you lock up? I thought interrogation and gathering information is your thing." Wally wanted to be mad but he sounded more tired than anything else. Sitting in a cell for days just wasn't his ideal idea of getting help. In that time he could have made contact with anyone else he thought who could help him. Probably.
He was still on the fence about thinking that everyone in this dimension was ten times more paranoid. Maybe taller too.
"I was busy." Bruce's voice turned Wally's attention back to the conversation.
"When isn't a version of you busy," Wally murmured to himself despite knowing that the other was right. He'd have wanted Batman to catch a serial murderer too before actually giving him any kind of attention. Otherwise, Batman wouldn't be Batman and they all wouldn't be fighting the good fight.
He wasn't sure if Bruce actually heard him. But the other leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. "Tell me what you know about me."
Wally blinked and stared directly at Bruce's face before looking to the side of him. "I don't know anything about you. And I'm not sure it's allowed to tell you about another Batman's life? Isn't that some kind of breach of trust?"
Bruce only nodded. "If the roles were reversed, he would ask you about me as well. And I wouldn't want you to tell him. But in the end, it doesn't make a difference. You're here because you need my help and I can only help you once I know details."
"Details about another you? Shouldn't you want to know the circumstances of how I got here?"
"Yes. But first I need to see where the other me and I overlap to improve your current situation."
That…did sound logical, even when Wally still felt like he was betraying someone here. He wondered if Lord Batman had had a similar talk with his dimension's Batman.
He just hoped that this wasn't some kind of test he was failing." Well, Batman is Bruce Wayne who is uh…rich. And quite often in the public eye but I usually don't follow those kinds of news so I'm not sure what he was up to recently. I know that he lives in Wayne Manor. I've seen it once before and met his butler, Alfred. Alfred…Pennyworth I believe. He seemed like a nice guy. Generally, I mean. Unfortunately, I got him to be angry with me for blowing up a wall of the manor," Wally admitted with an embarrassed expression.
Bruce's expression turned wary. "With your powers? The same way when you got us out?"
"No! I would never!" Wally vehemently shook his head. "We were in the middle of an alien invasion and had gotten to Wayne Manor as civilians. And well, long story short, we had one of the invaders ships in Batman's backyard and went to check it out. Me being me I had to push a button," Wally gave a rather self-deprecating smile. "And of course, it couldn't have been the lights or something like that. Instead it fired and…well yeah. The ship had been facing the wall so…
Thankfully no one got hurt," he quickly added when Bruce's eyebrows went up. "I offered to pay for the repairs, in rates. Or even repair it myself and then pay for the windows but Batman wouldn't hear of it. So yeah…Alfred was a bit cross with me. Batman too I guess." At least he had assumed so, since Batman and he had talked even less for a while after that.
"Alright." If Bruce had any particular thoughts about that then he didn't show them with any kind of expression. "What else?"
Wally scratched his cheek in thought. "What else? There isn't much, I guess. Like I said I don't really follow his public private life. But he's a good person. We can all rely on him when things get tough." He nodded more to himself as he finished that thought. Things might be strained between the both of them but that didn't mean that Batman would have let him die somewhere. Or refused to help. Of that, he was sure.
"And there was no one else when you were at the Manor?," Bruce asked.
"No. Not that I could see. We went in through the front door and then Alfred took us down to the Batcave so that we could regroup. I mean...there was an awesome dinosaur in the Batcave?" He offered weakly.
There was a brief twitch at the corner of Bruce's mouth. "I see."
"You do?" He would have thought that would be weird on itself but…did the dinosaur exist here too?
"I do," Bruce echoed and slowly stood up, the exhaustion evident in every movement. "I would have hoped for a bit…more but this will have to do." He stepped closer to Wally and held up a thin metal ring, almost like a smart watch. "This here would track your location no matter how fast or far you run, should you accept to wear it."
Wally eyed the device before looking back to Bruce, clutching the glass close to him. "Accept? Do I…uh..can I stay out of the cell then?" He held his hand out before Bruce's nod was even over.
The material of Bruce's gloves felt cool on Wally's skin, the frayed edges of his own suit barely in the way. The little device felt even colder to the touch but warmed up quickly. There was a faint click as it closed and Bruce's hands drew away, leaving Wally to inspect his new accessoire.
He looked up when Batman took a step back. "You can only take it off with me. I hope you understand the trust I give you with this. Come."
Slightly confused, Wally stood up, quickly placing the glass on the cot, and trailed after Bruce. "Where are we going? Don't you need some rest?" Still, he followed the other back through the way Robin and Wally had carried Bruce through.
"We all need some rest but not here," Bruce said as the small elevator took them down to where the Batmobile was. Both of them came to stand before it when Bruce turned back to Wally. "I'm about to take you home. The second you step out of line or do something suspicious there will be consequences." His voice was hard and left no room for arguments.
Not that Wally wanted to argue. Those were perfectly fine conditions that meant he got out of the cell. Bruce continued to stare at him and Wally quickly nodded, feeling slightly flustered. "Got it!"
After that, as if a magic word had been said, came the Batmobile to life. The seat in the front opened up just as the back with the two seats did as well.
"Not to sound stupid but who's going to drive? Oracle's not...online? " Wally asked as he shuffled to the back of the car. Driving in it had been awesome but scary too due to the fact that he hadn't been able to see the world passing by. And that while also sitting in the opposite direction of where the car was going.
Heavy steps echoed as Batman more or less jumped up the tank, his boots heavy on the metal, cowl back in place. "I will. Get in."
Right. Batman looked like death warmed over but let's drive a tank anyway. Shaking his head, Wally sat down on the same seat as before and clutched the restraints as the Batmobile closed off around him. Seconds later the motor flared to life and they were off.
"Hey," a voice to his side and a slight punch on his shoulder greeted him.
"Ow, hey to you too." Wally looked at Shayera and offered her a small smile as he rubbed his shoulder, the punch already long gone.
He watched as she threw herself on the empty chair beside him while completely ignoring the monitors. It was his shift after all. "To what do I owe your lovely presence?"
She snorted. "Who do I need to punch?"
Taken aback, Wally looked from the monitors to her. She seemed serious. "What? Why'd you ask that?"
"You can't be serious," she said in her usually gruff manner. "Anyone who makes you look like a drowned puppy should get a punch to the face, so." She formed a fist to show her willingness to go through with it. "Who do I need to punch?"
Wally blinked a few times before a small smile appeared on his face as he turned back to the screens. "That would be about everyone. Except Diana. She's cool."
He could feel her giving him an odd expression.
"That includes me as well then?"
"Heavily depends on what else you have to say about this."
"Ohh," Shayera cooed. "Look at that snark."
Wally turned to her for a few moments. "Comes with the territory, I guess. Did John set you up to do this?" Because this smelled like something GL would do. To sick Shayera on him. And Shayera would do it because she would feel the same about the situation. She always had a lot to say about some topics.
The way she crossed her arms would have been telling enough. "He's just worried."
"I've heard that before." Wally turned back to his work, taking a few seconds to look at everything. "He also told me that it would be fine to take my time."
"He's trying to help. We all are. We aren't the one who keeps pushing everyone away." She sounded calm at first but seemed to bristle at the end when Wally didn't immediately agree to what she said.
Wally sighed and placed his elbow on the console, watching out for any buttons, and put his head in his hand. He looked at her, tired. "I know. And I'm happy for friends like you guys, but…"
"No buts Wally. There's getting over something and there's stewing in misery!"
"Stewing!" He echoed and lifted his head. "You say it like it's been years! It hasn't even been months! Last I looked I wasn't the one throwing a tantrum over simple things like these!"
Shayera was suddenly on her feet, feathers ruffled. She was seething. "Maybe it's you who needs a good punch to the head!"
"Maybe," Wally said as his anger left him, chin back on his head so that he could stare at the screen in front of him. "Maybe it would be for the best."
The silence between them was disturbed by her wings, the soft sound of feathers moving around. "Wally…" She sounded more apologetic, rather than mad. "I didn't…you know I didn't mean it like that."
Shayera was only met with more silence as Wally gave her the cold shoulder.
Soon after she left.
Well, Batman's driving style was certainly…different. Not in a bad way, Wally mused as the car stopped and he got to step out of it, just different. A bit more aggressive than Oracle's. Then again, it was difficult to judge without actually seeing anything. All he had to go by was the way vertigo pulled on him while the seat worked against it.
Standing on his own feet again, Wally stretched himself with a groan before he relaxed again. He was a bit startled to find Bruce, the cowl was down again, staring at him over the car.
Before it could get too awkward however, Bruce waved him over and together they went through the Batcave. On first glance it seemed like any other Batcave he had seen. And wasn't that something? That he had multiple references to compare it too?
All in all, it seemed like a solid Batcave, although he didn't see a dinosaur anywhere. Maybe it was somewhere else. Seeing how Wally had come from a tiny Batcave.
They entered an elevator as Bruce turned to him. "You're about to meet people who are important to me. Don't make me regret this."
If Wally wouldn't have understood the high risk Bruce was taking with him then he might have cowered under the sharp look he was given. But he did. He understood. So he nodded instead with a serious "I won't."
The elevator door opened soon after and Wally trailed after Bruce once more, taking in the giant room as they moved from it.
"Alfred!" Bruce called out just as Alfred stepped into view from outside the room, a relieved expression on his face.
"Master Bruce. It is good to see you finally back. And in one piece as well," he nodded before looking at Wally. "Then this must be Mister West. I cannot express my gratitude."
Wally quickly waved a hand around. "Oh no, it's fine! When help is needed, I help. Granted I can," he said a bit nervously. He didn't want to seem too full of himself. "And you can just call me Wally. Mister West makes me feel like my father."
Alfred inclined his head. "Master Wallace then."
"I mean…sure, why not." Wally sighed. There didn't seem to be a point to arguing.
Bruce watched the entire interaction before simply walking outside of the room. Wally quickly followed, much like Alfred. He didn't look at them as he spoke. "Alfred, I'm sure Tim already filled you in about Wally's food intake?"
"Of course. There is already prepared food on the way while I adjust everything."
Wally's face flushed slightly at that. It felt stupid to be so grateful for food but he really was hungry and they really seemed to be serious about at least letting him stay there. But he wasn't sure how to say that out loud, so he focused on something else. "Tim? So that is-"
"Me! I'm Tim." A person joined them from the front. "Or well, Robin," he grinned as he came into view. He had changed into civilian clothes and seemed…right at home here, Wally realized. It was an odd thought, but Bruce had asked if his dimensions Batman had anyone else besides Alfred. It made sense that someone else would live here too then.
Their entire little group came to a stop as everyone faced each other. Wally smiled at Tim. "Well, happy to get to know you too. Officially."
"Glad to be of service," Tim said while he tipped an imaginary hat.
"So…ah..," Wally awkwardly started, earning him everyone's attention. "I hope it doesn't sound too forward but someone put spray paint on my chest, and my suit is really not waterproof or anything…"
"Of course," Alfred agreed while Tim shrugged at whatever look Bruce was giving him. "If you would follow me. I will show you to your room and bathroom."
With that Alfred turned away, leaving Wally to nervously look at Bruce and Tim. Bruce had seemed so tight about him being here and now…was he allowed to follow?
His answer came in the form of Tim shoo-ing at him and crowding his space so that Wally started to move, Tim remaining close by.
