Early Memories: Naru

The first memories she has are of the animal people talking to her; she doesn't understand what they're saying, but she enjoys hearing their voices and soon she feels the need to make sounds too. The noises seem to please the animal people as they soon start showing her cards with weird signs on them; say Ka or Tou they say to her, so she does.

The more sounds she makes, the more the animal people seemed pleased and they reward her with playtime with strange people; she says strange because they don't have an animal face, that's the day she learns what a mask is and that the animal people are actually masked people. Never the less she is curious about the two others like her.

In her memory, she remembers looking at the two strange beings laying next to her. The cat masked animal lady notices her curiosity and picks her up, "I see you're a curious little one, that will get you far in life. Meet Shikamaru and Sasuke, Naru, they're going to be your teammates one day," she says. Naru, her name was Naru, that's the first time she remembers hearing her name.

Her routine soon consists of spending time with Shika and Sasu; although Shika doesn't seem as interested in her as she is of him. This upsets her of course and she soon begins trying to move next to him so she can get his attention; however, it doesn't escape her notice that Shika's disinterest in her and Sasu upsets the masked people. Vaguely she wonders why it isn't them he's ignoring.

It soon catches her notice that the mask people are being unfair to Shika for some reason. It starts with them putting him right between her and Sasu so that they are all touching and if he moves away from them they put him right back. She also notices that he isn't allowed to sleep when he wants too, if he falls asleep before the masked people are ready for him to they hit him on the cheek. This happens quite a lot for a long time until one day Shika starts playing with Sasu. He still ignores her, though.

So life goes on until one day she decided to say something. She looks at the cat mask lady and goes, "Ka san," she says. It was like she had said a bad word because the masked people stop moving and all look at her, especially the cat masked lady. One of the masked people, one wearing a lion mask, walks up to her and picks her up, "What did you say?" he asks.

Confused, she goes, "Ka san?" she says.

The lion masked Anbu huffs and then he turns to the cat masked lady, "Well this one thinks your mama, Néko," he says.

The cat lady just shrugs, "Well, what do you expect? We are teaching her to talk," she says before looking at Naru, "GoodJob," she says. Then life goes on.

It isn't long after this that she starts saying more words like, hungry and up, up. She soon learns that the masked ones won't pick her up unless it's to change her, feed her, or take her out of her crib to play with Shika and Sasu. She doesn't understand, why won't they just hold her?

The masked people won't pick her up so she decided to stop talking; this makes the masked people mad. The cat masked lady she called Ka san yanks her up out of her crib one day without warning and looks her straight in the eye, "I know what you're doing little one and it won't work. I suggest you do as you're told," she says and then puts her back in her crib. She watches as the masked lady walks away from her and she realizes that she's scared. So she decides to start talking again, just to be safe.

When she turns two she realizes that the masked people work for someone known as Lady K. The first time she sees Lady K, the old lady looks down at her with a frown on her face, "How is she progressing?" she says, but not to her.

The cat lady looks at her, "She is progressing just fine, she will soon be speaking in sentences and she can walk now too," she says.

Lady K nods and then walks over to Shikamaru and points, "And what about him? Is he still showing signs of being a problem?" she asks.

The cat lady shakes her head, "No ma'am, we appear to have broken that habit out of him early on," she says.

Lady K nods, "Good," she says, and then walks over to Sasuke. "And what about him?" she asks.

The cat lady shrugs, "He's progressing about the same as the others," she says.

Lady K nods, "I see, well everything seems to be in order then. Keep giving the children stimuli and if they misbehave, you know what to do," she says.

The Anbu nod and Naru wonders what Lady K means; unfortunately, she soon learns. It happened one day when Naru was being fussy, she was upset because Shika and Sasu were ignoring her so she starting throwing a tantrum. The cat masked Anbu scooped her up so fast she didn't have time to contemplate what was happening. One moment she was in the common room and the next she was thrown into a black room.

She hated the darkness, and she began to scream louder and louder until her throat hurts, but no one comes to let her out, and eventually, she falls asleep. When she awakens, she's in her crib, this happens one more time until she learns that if she cries or is bad, she will go into the darkroom. So she makes up her mind that she will not be bad anymore.

It's also the day she learns that something isn't right.
