Christmas time had arrived at the hospital and the residential ward was fully decorated with a tree in every corner. Jake's progress had a hit a bump in the road. He recently had several seizures, one of which he bumped his head on the wall and caused him to be in a coma for some time, before he came out of it. It knocked back his confidence a bit and he had remained silent for two whole weeks, before speaking again.
Jake was in his room, laying on the mat, practicing his writing when Sharon walked in with Charles. Jake looked up and grinned and rolled himself over to a sitting position. "Cha... Char.. Charles!" Sharon smiled and left them alone, closing the door behind her. Charles knelt and sat on the floor. "Hey Jake, happy Christmas!"
Jake grinned at him. "H-a... a.. Happy Chri... !" Charles smiled and looked at the writing. "Oh hey, these are looking great!" Jake looked down at them and nodded, happy with them. He then spied the bag behind Charles and leaned forward, so he was now on his stomach to try and look at it.
Charles laughed. "Still a detective eh? I got you these.." He paused as Sharon walked in.
"Don't mind me, thought I would come and join in the festivities." Jake licked his lips and stared at the bag with anticipation, his legs wiggling a bit as he tried to stay where he was.
Sharon smiled. "He does that when he gets excited. Oh, are these for Jake, Charles?" Charles nodded and started to empty the contents onto the floor. Jake gave an excited cry. "Ha-.. Happy!" Charles grinned and looked down at the small collection of toys, before speaking up.
"The Captain has a cousin who has autism, so he suggested some sensory things for Jake."
Sharon grinned. "That is a wonderful idea actually! It will help him push his mind further, especially with the puzzles. Please give me best wishes to your squad."
Charles nodded and then frowned. "Will.. Jake be staying here for the holidays?" Jake took no notice as he moved a large felt worm around his wrists, trying to make it move between his fingers, now laying on his back and humming happily to himself. Sharon though, smiled.
"Well, it would be great if he could go back to his mom's or a friends, but because of the seizures he has had and how they might change in different places and such, the hospital staff have given me very special permission to take him home for the holidays, for a whole week. This will also get him use to a more.. Home environment and.. It turns out we don't live that far from Rosa either."
Charles smiled and then frowned a bit. "I'm surprised you know where Rosa lives." Sharon laughed. "Are you kidding me? Before I worked here, I was a midwife. I was the first one to hold that girl." Charles sat there with his mouth open, taking everything in.
"So you.."
"Yep."
Charles sat still for a second, before he spoke. "Well that is great! Amy is spending time with her family this year."
"How is Amy doing?" Charles sighed and stood up, before sitting on a chair and watching Jake. He spoke up.
"Still upset at what happened... How he's been doing.. Their relationship has taken a bit of a turn of course. I know that somewhere they both still love each other, but... Amy has needs you know?"
"I know that feeling. You tell her from me, if she ever needs a chat, she can call me."
Charles nodded. "I will, thanks Sharon." He looked at the time. "Oh, I have to go. Got to go and pick my son up from his school before the holidays. Merry Christmas Sharon." He stood and walked over to Jake, who looked at him from where he was laying. "Have the best of holidays Jake and we will all see you real soon!" Jake grinned and held up his hand for a high five, which Charles gave.
A while later, Jake was turning the fidget spinner in his hand when Sharon came in, dressed up in her coat and hat. "Oh, it is snowing out there!" Jake gasped and looked out the window and grinned. Sharon smiled and walked over to the closet. Jake paused and looked at her, frowning a bit. Sharon smiled and said nothing, but got his winter stuff out.
Jake looked as she also packed a bag for him as well. "Whe... Where we.. go?" Sharon looked at him.
"You mister..." She walked over and puta wooly hat on his head. "Are coming home with me for the holidays!" Jake's mouth hung open and his hands shook. His back arch as it often did when he was excited.
"N..No..Way!"
Sharon laughed and helped him into his coat. "Yes way! One whole week, how does that sound my superstar?" Jake gave an excited cry and soon they were off to spend time together. When they left the hospital, there was a surprise- Karen was there. Sharon smiled.
"Karen, how nice to see you!"
Karen smiled and held out her arms for Jake who was in his wheelchair, so he didn't slip. Jake grinned and hugged her. "M-Mom!"
"Hi sweetie! I hear you are going to spend time at Sharon's for Christmas! That is so great! I've had all your presents delivered." She kissed him and looked at Sharon.
"Gosh, I would love to have him home for the holidays but you know me... I would forget his meds or something and.." Sharon gently touched her arm. "Hey now, none of that... You are his mother and that will never change. You're coming around on Christmas day, so I can show you some ropes then."
"I know but... He's my son, I should always know how to take care of him."
Sharon smiled and moved forward, embracing Karen into a hug, before pulling away. "You have and he's done the same for you. There is no shame in letting others help you with your load. You have your own life too Karen and it is just as important." Jake sneezed and whined. Sharon smiled. "I better get this one to the car before he does an Oscar worthy performance."
Karen laughed and walked with them to the car, helping Jake with his belt with Sharon's help. "Okay, I'll see you guys on Christmas day then, have fun!" Jake looked at her. "Ba... Bayeee Mom!" Sharon waved to her and soon they were off.
Jake looked out the window, watching the snow fall, putting his hand on the glass. Sharon spoke to him as she drove. "How about some music, what you thinking buddy?" Jake turned and looked at her and then with all the seriousness he could muster, answered.
"Frozen." He had seen it when he got in.
Sharon sighed but smiled. She knew her niece and nephew had forgot something in the car and she was sure it was on purpose.
