Chapter 5: Duplicity

(Late Afternoon) [Monday] April 11th 20XX

Aoyama-Itchome

Alley near Shujin Academy

"Holy shit, we're back!" Ryuji exclaimed as he stared down at his bare hands. He stopped and peered around the alleyway and out into the streets.

What lay beyond was a typical neighborhood in Aoyama-Itchome. They could see the front gates of Shujin Academy, and much to the group's relief, it was back to being simply a school.

Ren observed their surroundings for a long moment before offering a solemn nod. "So it would seem Morgana was right."

"We were fortunate to have Morgana-Sensei with us. I hope he can learn more about the tower where Takamaki is," Kasumi said as her brow knitted together.

The blond scowled as he slammed his hand into the nearby wall. "I can't believe we had to leave her behind... Shit! If only I was stronger. Fuck, it feels like I ran a marathon; I'm totally beat."

Kawakami's eyes widened as she glanced down at her watch. "I'm not trying to be dismissive of Takamaki's plight, but we have another problem. We've been gone for hours now. I hope Koboyakawa doesn't have my head for this. Then there's the lot of you," she said as her gaze swept between the trio. "You two are already on thin ice as it is. And this could be the tipping point towards expulsion."

The dark-haired boy sighed. "I haven't even been to class yet, and I'm already on the verge of being kicked out. So much for staying out of trouble. My caretaker is not going to be happy."

"Shit, this is a hell of a way to start somewhere new," Ryuji said, offering a sympathetic look as he shoved his hands into his pockets.

Sadayo's brow furrowed as she regarded her clothing only to note that it was clean of any bloodstains and was only slightly wrinkled. Her gaze shifted over to Ren only to notice he was void of any blood. It was as if there were no apparent signs of the injuries he'd sustained in that other world. "As if I didn't have enough to worry about, I can't afford to lose my job."

"Wait, but there has to be something we can do right, Sensei?" Kasumi suggested as she chewed on her lower lip. "I doubt telling anyone the truth would go over well."

Ryuji snorted. "Yeah, that's a hell of an understatement. I was there the whole time, and I can barely believe it. They'd probably think we were either crazy or on drugs."

"So we need to think of a good explanation then? We have to find a way to help Ann, but we can't do that if we're getting wrapped in trivial matters," Ren said as he looked off with a thoughtful expression.

"Trivial? Jeez, you do realize that while it's not the end of the world, if we don't play this carefully, it could end poorly for all of us? I'm getting lightheaded just thinking about it," Kawakami admitted with an exasperated expression.

A mischievous grin spread across Ren's face as he snapped his fingers. "That's it! Sensei, I think I have a way to cover for us. However, it will require us to stick to this story. If any of us crack, then it will all fall apart."

"Senpai, you seem certain about this. I don't like lying to people, but as I said before, I don't see what our alternatives are," Kasumi admitted with a sad smile.

"Hey, you can count on me dude, I'd be toast already if not for you. So I've got your back," the former track star said as he flashed a grin.

Sadayo shook her head with a small sigh. She stopped when she felt the other's eyes on her. "Looks like I wasn't wrong about you being a troublemaker. Fine, spit it out then, Amamiya."

Tokyo

Interrogation Room

The Prosecutor sat back before flipping open a folder and examining the contents a moment. "I'm trying to keep an open mind, but Amamiya, this is a lot to process."

"That's pretty much the gist of it," Ren said, offering a slight nod in response. "The first trip into the metaverse was a complete accident, and it was just by sheer good luck that no one died."

"So you're saying everything that came as a result afterward was because of this accident?"

The dark-haired boy again nodded. "You got it. Back then, the codes names and even the Phantom Thieves of Hearts hadn't even started yet. We weren't on some grand crusade to reform society yet. After the first visit, the real goal was just to save the girl and avoid any backlash from Shujin."

"And yet things became far more complex, didn't they?" Sae questioned as she leaned forward. "It's clear if your story has any merit that you did save Miss Takamaki. However, that wasn't the end of the story in the slightest. Things with Kamoshida only continued to escalate, isn't that right?"

Ren's expression darkened slightly. "We learned how many people had suffered as a result of his twisted desires. There were so many people close to me that had suffered some form of abuse from that man. And yet while Ann was trapped in Kamoshida's Castle, it exposed more corruption within Shujin, but it also revealed that there are good people who are stronger than their abuse."

"So, at some point, things pivoted. It no longer was just a means of saving a trapped girl but also exposing this man of his crimes?" the woman asked with an unreadable expression.

"I know all of this is hard to understand, but you need to understand something. Once you've awakened to your true self in the Metaverse, a person changes. In a way, you could call it a change of heart, but it's more like a person's true feelings to bubble to surface. On our journey, we had obtained incredible powers, witnessed the depravity Kamoshida was capable of, so the idea of just turning a blind eye and doing nothing? That was impossible."

Sae's brow furrowed in irritation. "Well-intentioned or not, what you and your group did broke the law or at the very least laws that are probably having to be changed to incorporate these kinds of actions. Why did you not simply turn over what you discovered to law enforcement and let us handle this? You would never have to be sitting in this room had you only done that to begin with."

A dry humorless laugh escaped Ren. "While I do believe there are good and just people in the criminal justice system, do you really think that would have solved anything? What Kamoshida was doing wasn't some well-hidden secrets. There were rumors and plenty of people who knew around the school. The Principal himself was doing everything he could to keep it under wraps. As for the students, they felt powerless. How could they speak up when they see the person in charge was willing to tolerate or ignore Kamoshida's offenses. That gave Kamoshida power over almost anyone and caused people to fear him."

"...I had understood that Principal Koboyakawa was involved in quite a few shady dealings, but to think he'd allow a predator to walk around unchecked," the woman said, trailing off with a thoughtful expression.

"Our principal only cared about the reputation and prestige of Shujin, even though it was built on a lie. Furthermore, we suspected he probably had connections and would have had any investigations dismissed anyway. I know you disapprove of the Phantom Thieves, but we only exist because the world as it is couldn't handle its problems."

A frown remained on the woman's face. "We'll have plenty of time to discuss morality and the justification of your actions later. For now, I'm much more curious about what transpired after you left that world for the first time? At what point did the thieves officially come into existence?"

Ren shut his eyes for a moment. "Well, as I was saying, I had proposed a solution to explain our absence. While not perfect, my hope is it would keep all of us from any serious consequences..."

Shujin Academy

Principal's Office

Kawakami forced what she hoped seemed like a sincere smile as she pressed her hands together before bowing her head. "Sir, I'm so sorry for not notifying anyone. When Miss Yoshizawa here collapsed, I sort of panicked. Since the school nurse wasn't here yet, I took it upon myself to take her to the hospital myself. Though I left in such a hurry, I left my phone."

"So, in summary, Miss Yoshizawa here collapsed due to a bout of anemia. My goodness, this almost spiraled into something far worse. I was afraid I would have to involve the police," Koboyakawa admitted though a look of relief was evident on his face.

The Gymnast bowed her head low. "Principal, I'm so sorry. I must have overdone it during practice yesterday, and I missed breakfast this morning. Please forgive any trouble this may have caused."

"Oh, that won't be necessary," the portly man said, waving one of his meaty hands. "I'm just pleased this was nothing more serious. Perhaps it was reckless of Miss Kawakami, but I think we can excuse that considering her bravery in looking after one of our most promising new students."

"What about these two? You said you ran into them while escorting Yoshizawa out of the building?" Kamoshida asked as he stood in the corner of the room with his arms folded. His eyes seem to scrutinize his fellow teacher and barely restrain visible contempt for Sakamoto and Amamiya.

Ryuji tensed as he was about to lash out at the real Kamoshida but stopped as he felt Ren lightly elbowing him in the side.

Sadayo, on the other hand, was quick to respond as she tried to maintain a porcelain smile. "That's right, despite their ill reputation, they didn't hesitate to offer help. It made getting Yoshizawa to help much easier."

"Tch, I wouldn't be surprised if they only volunteered just as an excuse to ditch class," Kamoshida scoffed.

Ren tried to put on a fake smile of his own. "I wouldn't dream of it, Sensei. If anything, it would have been a lot easier if I could be at class on time, but I couldn't just stand by and do nothing. Kawakami Sensei had her hands full."

"No joke, we thought Kasumi was going to end up eating concrete if we didn't step in," Ryuji snorted as he offered the Coach a smirk.

The Principal sighed as he adjusted his tie. "Whatever the reasoning might be, it would seem we've gotten to the bottom of this. I see no reason to drag this out any longer. Miss Yoshizawa, if you could just please be more careful in the future?" the man suggested with a tired smile.

"Oh yes, of course, sir," the redhead said, mustering a small smile.

"Wonderful, well, if this has been resolved, I really should get back to my class. Suguru, I appreciate you looking after them in my stead," Sadayo said though she notably found herself unable to look the man in the face.

The volleyball coach's dark eyes regarded her before he smiled. "Oh, of course, It was my pleasure. There was one other thing I was curious about, though I had heard from a few of the other students that Miss Takamaki was seen with Sakamoto and Amamiya this morning. Any idea where she might have gotten off to?"

A moment of tension filled the room before suddenly it was broken by Ryuji.

"O-Oh well, that's simple. Before Kawakami Sensei showed up, she decided to back home. I think she was uh sick or something, right?" Ryuji asked as he shot a look at Ren.

The dark-haired boy wanted to sigh but restrained himself. "...Yeah, she'd also forgotten her umbrella like us and didn't seem to feel well."

"Hopefully, she'll be back in no time," Kasumi added after a moment.

Kawakami cleared her throat. "Well, this flu season has been an unusually long one. I'll make sure to get with Takamaki when she returns."

The coach visibly frowned as he thumbed his chin. "I see...that's unfortunate."

The Principal nodded thoughtfully. "Hm, then it seems we've gotten everything squared away. I'm just pleased everything can return to normal..."

Shujin Academy

Roof

"What kind of welcome was that? I mean, I expected transferring here would be rough, but that was something else," Ren admitted as he leaned against a railing as he stared off the rooftop and at grounds below.

Ryuji sighed as he joined the other boy before scratching the back of his head. "Sorry, dude, seems like someone's already been spreading shit about ya. I don't even know how these things start. Hey, least we can be outcasts together, am I right?"

A chuckle escaped the other boy. "Misery loves company, I suppose."

"Hey! What the hell is that supposed to mean? I'm just saying it ain't all bad. Sure, most people are giving the cold shoulder, but at least you've got a few people, right? I seriously owe you one, you're super tight with Kasumi, and I think after what happened back in that other world that Kawakami is even soft on ya," the blond said as he clapped the spectacled boy's back.

Ren shook his head. "Honestly, school drama is the last thing that matters right now. We stumbled into something insane today, and it won't be over till we get Ann out of there safely."

"Yeah, I'm with you, dude. She can be a royal pain in the ass, but I don't think she's much different than us. Like she always stands out like a sore thumb. Probably because she's half Japanese or whatever, and I think she's only got one real friend, ya know? There's been a rumor though that she's been dating Kamoshida,"

"Dating Kamoshida?" Ren asked as his eyes widened in surprise.

"T-That's not true," a soft-spoken voice said, causing both of the boys to jump in surprise.

As they turned, they saw a girl their age with dark brown hair before them. She seemed pretty timid by her demeanor, her eyes having a notable dullness to them, yet there seemed to be just the slightest edge in her posture.

"S-Shit! How long have you been standing there? And who are you? Wait, you're that girl from my class, right?" Ryuji asked as his brow scrunched up. "...Nope, drawing a blank."

"...I'm Shiho Suzui. And the girl you were talking about, she's my best friend! Please don't spread rumors like that around. She has to deal with enough already!"

Ren regarded her for a moment. "You don't have to worry about me buying into rumors like that. Everyone thinks I'm some delinquent. I know better than to judge someone just on baseless rumors."

"Totally! I mean, I didn't know what to think about all of those rumors, but I'm in the same boat. After what happened to the track team, everyone assumes the worst of me, ya know? But we'll take your word for it when it comes to Ann," Ryuji said with a severe expression.

The slightest twitch appeared on the corners of the girl's lips. "...I'm relieved to hear that. Then do you think you can tell me what happened to Ann this morning?"

The former track star offered an unsure grin. "Well, like we told the Principal, she went back home because she was feeling sick."

"Liar," the girl said in a surprisingly cold manner as she balled up her fists.

"W-What? I'm for real!" Ryuji protested before the girl promptly shoved her phone into his face.

Shiho's expression hardened. "I was texting her this morning, and we were even discussing our plans for lunch period. She never once mentioned feeling sick, and if she had suddenly came down with something, she would have at least responded by now. Ann has her phone glued to her practically all the time."

The dark-haired boy cleared his throat. "Shiho, right? I'm Ren Amamiya, the new transfer student. Look, I know you're just worried about her, but there's no need to panic or assume the worst. She didn't have an umbrella this morning and probably started feeling ill on the way to school. She may have damaged her phone because of the rain or even dropped it. I'm sure she'll be back in no time."

"Yeah, exactly! So don't look at me like you're going to squash me," Ryuji said with a slight edge of apprehension in his voice.

Shiho let her shoulders slump before she allowed a weak smile to grace her lips. "I-I'm sorry if I lost my composure, I just don't have many good things in my life, and I couldn't stand to lose one of them. I-I'm supposed to be going to volleyball practice today, but I...I think I'll check on her instead. Thank you both. Amamiya, I hope you don't let rumors get you down. I don't believe them either," she said as she bowed her head towards the pair before she turned towards the stairwell.

The pair watched the girl's form shrink from sight before the tension became more palpable.

"...Dude, I think I fucked up," Ryuji said under his breath.

Ren groaned. "I'm in total agreement there. Why did you have to come up with that excuse for Ann in the first place?"

The other boy shrugged. "Hey iunno, it was just the first shit that came to my mind. Besides, I thought it worked, right?"

"Yeah, but the problem now is we have even more lies to keep up, and her friend may have been pacified for now, but once she realizes we lied to her...we'll have even more to worry about," the dark-haired boy pointed out.

Ryuji shoved his hands into his pockets. "All the more reason why we gotta rescue Ann sooner rather than later. Then those details don't matter, right?"

A tired smile found its way upon Ren's face. "I hope that's true. We all traded numbers earlier, so I'll be in touch if something comes up. I need to get back to Yongen-Jaya, though. I hope my caretaker doesn't throw me out on the street."

Shujin Academy

Parking Lot

Kawakami sighed for what seemed like the hundredth time that day as she trudged towards her unimpressive little car. Everything that had happened throughout the day made her feel as if she was fifty years older. The only relief for her was the idea of getting home, taking a long bath, at least until she had to head off to her second job. Kawakami stopped as she neared her car's door before her eyes widened as she began to fish through her pocketbook, only to realize her keys were missing.

"Hard to go somewhere without these, right?" a familiar voice called out before the sound of jingling filled the air.

The woman pivoted to face the man with a sense of apprehension. She managed a forced smile as she saw Kamoshida standing there with a grin plastered on his face.

"Oh, Suguru, thank you. I must have dropped them somewhere. Today has been nothing short of a headache."

The former olympian laughed. "Oh, I can only imagine, but you didn't lose them. You left your keys along with your pocketbook and your phone in the guidance room."

"Oh right, that's why I wasn't able to answer all the calls I received earlier," Kawakami said though she felt her pulse quickening by the second.

The man nodded before snapping his fingers. "Yes, however, it does raise a different question entirely. How were you able to drive Yoshizawa and those boys to the Hospital without your keys?"

"I-I..." Sadayo trailed off as she found her mouth fumbling for a response.

"Let me guess, one of those delinquents hotwired your car?" Kamoshida suggested with a mocking grin before closing his fist around the keys and returning his arm to his side.

The dark-haired woman shook her head frantically. "N-No, I just got my facts mixed up. You see, I realized I'd left all my personal effects behind after I got Yoshizawa outside, but I managed to flag down a taxi. Those boys helped me from there."

Suddenly the man stepped forward, forcing the shorter woman to back peddle until her back was pressed against the car door with the man looming over her. "You know the problem with lies, Sadayo? The more you tell, the harder it is to keep your story straight. Koboyakawa doesn't care because the matter is already solved as far as he's concerned, and Shujin's shiny reputation remains unsullied. However, I take it upon myself to know what goes on around here. I consider myself a pretty noble kind of man, one that doesn't tolerate anything that could damage my reputation or this academy's."

"Noble? ... Is that a joke? I-I know exactly what kind of man you are. You're nothing more than an abusive asshole who is still reliving his glory days. Do you think we don't see Mishima's bruises? Or that we haven't heard of the way you look and treat some of the female students? You're nothing more than a pig!" Sadayo spat out as she finally met his gaze.

The man merely laughed as he suddenly slammed his off-hand beside her head before bending down so that he was only a few inches away. "What would that make you then? A bitch who simply observers and does nothing? Everything I've done is for this school, and it would be nothing without me. Koboyakawa might be the Principal but make no mistake, I am the one in charge here. Do you think Shujin Academy would get the same prestige from its soccer or track team? Of course not. It's because I, Suguru Kamoshida, mentor the best of the best."

Sadayo felt herself shaking as she fought back the tears as his comments struck a chord with her. "N-None of that makes you untouchable. You can't just get away with anything you want."

"How naïve can you be? Don't you realize that Koboyakawa would do just about anything to protect me? Without me, this school would have nothing. Furthermore, you have nothing but outlandish claims and zero proof. I bet you can't find a soul who would speak ill of me," the man boasted.

"...What do you want, Suguru? Just spit it out," the woman said between gritted teeth as she cast her gaze downward.

The man gave her an insincere smile. "Oh, it's very simple. Just tell me what really happened today, and maybe I can keep Koboyakawa in the dark about this indiscretion."

A moment of silence passed before the woman gritted her teeth. "Give me my keys, or I'll call the cops and tell them you were harassing me."

A low whistle escaped the man as he suddenly straightened his posture before dropping the keys onto the pavement. "It must be quite the secret if you're willing to go so far. Of course, that's not the only secret you have, is it?"

Kawakami quickly bent over and collected her keys before clutching them to her chest. Her face paled as she tried to force out her following words. "I-I don't know what you're talking about."

"You have to work on your ability to lie, Sadayo, or would you prefer Becky?" the man said in a quieter voice.

Kawakami chewed on the inside of her cheek. "So you're blackmailing me now?"

The man offered an innocent smile. "I must admit I was pissed off this evening due to more than one incident, but I didn't want to have to go this far. It's not that difficult, though. Just tell me what you're hiding, or perhaps you'd prefer the school body to see how cute you are in your maid outfit?"

A look of despair filled the woman's eyes. "P-Please...I'd lose everything..."

"You haven't given me much choice, I'm afraid," the man said with a shrug. "However, considering how good of a guy I am, I'll give you some time to think it over. I can tell it must be something scandalous if you're so defiant. So tell you what, I'll give you till after the first of the month to decide. I've got my hands full with the volleyball team and players skipping practice. A few weeks seems pretty generous, don't you think?" the man chuckled as he turned away. "I should probably let you go. I'm sure you have a busy evening, right?" he questioned as he walked off, chuckling to himself, leaving a very distraught Kawakami in his wake.

Shujin Academy

Gym

"I promise I'm fine, dad. I took it easy at practice, too," Kasumi said into her cellphone as she stepped out of the locker room. "This morning...it was just overexertion. I'm on my way home, so there's no reason to worry."

"I'm sorry dear, you just know that I worry. After everything that's happened, how could I not? Just pace yourself, okay? For your old man's sake at least?" the tired voice asked.

The redhead managed a weak smile. "You have my word. I'll see you soon."

After a short reply in response, the girl tucked her damaged phone back into her pocket before realizing she wasn't alone. Several feet away, she saw a boy perhaps a year her senior adjusting what appeared to be a volleyball net that seemed slightly off-kilter.

"Need any help with that?" she called out before offering what she hoped was a warm expression.

The boy visibly jumped before glancing over his shoulder. He had several bruises sprinkled across his face, along with a bandage. Furthermore, one of his eyes seemed to be visibly swollen. There were small traces of blood visible beneath the shoddy gauze on his face. He almost immediately shifted his gaze to the floor. "Uh, I-I wouldn't want to trouble anyone."

Kasumi wordlessly stepped forward, her brow knitting together. "You're not troubling me at all, and I'm always happy to help. You're a second-year, aren't you?"

"Y-Yes, I'm Yuuki Mishima," the boy offered in a stilted manner. "The Coach was adamant it was my punishment to stay and tend to all the equipment."

"Punishment?" the girl asked incredulously as she stepped a bit closer still regarding the boy's injuries.

Mishima seemed to sense the attention as he visibly tensed. "I-I mean to say it's my job to do this. I'm not that exceptional of a player, so this is how I can contribute."

The girl adjusted her bag as she seemed to consider her words a moment. "Yuuki, you don't have to be so on edge. What exactly warranted this kind of punishment, and what happened? You look like you need rest more than anything."

"...A ball hit me in the face because I was careless. It was my fault," he said almost mechanically. "As for my punishment? It's my job to make sure there is no absence in attendance. Coach Kamoshida wants everyone to be prepared for the upcoming tournament. "

"Wait, you're being punished because someone else didn't show up? How is that fair?" Kasumi asked with a wide-eyed expression.

"..Fair doesn't exactly have anything to do with it," the boy murmured to himself before seemingly realizing he'd said it out loud. His expression shifted to anxiety almost instantly. "Please forget you heard that! I'm happy to be able to do my part. I envy those with talent, but this is how I can contribute," he said with a dull expression in his eyes.

The red-haired girl's expression seemed to grow uncharacteristically dark. "Envy? I get that. Sometimes it does feel like you're trying to reach a goal that seems impossible."

Mishima seemed to notice the shift in the freshman's demeanor. "Wait, you're Kasumi Yoshizawa, aren't you? The first year everyone has been talking about. It's hard to believe you'd feel jealous of anyone."

Kasumi shook her head as if banishing some wild thought to recesses of her mind. "...Well, no one is perfect, right? I mean, we all need help from time to time," she said as her previous demeanor began to return slowly. "So why don't I help you finish up here?"

"Are you sure? I-I don't want to bother you," the boy said with a mixture of nervousness and perhaps embarrassment.

"Yuuki Senpai, you're no bother at all. Besides, the sooner I help you, the sooner you can get home and rest," the girl said as she favored him with a smile.

The boy fell quiet for a moment, but his lips twitched ever so slightly. "Thank you, Yoshizawa. I appreciate it."

(Evening) [Monday] April 11th 20XX

Yongen Jaya

Cafe Leblanc

Ren walked into the Cafe at a notably slower pace. He could feel the day's events weighing on him and felt utterly exhausted. As he took in the interior, he noticed a lone patron seated at the bar counter. She sported medical attire, but her gothic style mixed with it was striking. He couldn't help but find himself starring for a moment before averting his gaze as he saw Sojiro offering him a disapproving look.

After only a few more steps, the woman rose from her seated position before nodding at the older man. "Thanks, it was great as always, Sakura."

"Glad to hear it. Take care, Doctor, and be safe on your way home. There have been a lot more thugs on the streets lately."

A somewhat bemused expression flitted across her face. "Oh, is that concern I'm detecting? I'd be more worried for any idiot stupid enough to try something," she said as she turned towards the door. However, her gaze fell upon the teenager as she seemed to be analyzing him intently. "You.."

"Uh, yes, Ma'am?" Ren asked, feeling unusually shy under her sharp gaze.

"You look like the walking dead. Try getting more sleep," the woman said in a deadpan tone.

One of the boy's eyes twitched. 'This is coming from the gothic chick who could moonlight as a vampire.' "Right, I'll try to do that. Just moved to Tokyo, I guess I'm not adjusted yet,"

The woman hummed aloud for a moment. "Huh, well, if you don't settle in, come see me at my clinic. You won't be doing yourself any good if you start falling asleep in class," she said as she produced a small card between her fingers before pressing it into the boy's chest. Then without another word, she merely waved a hand before letting herself outside.

"Well, she's certainly a character," the boy said as he looked down at what appeared to be a business card.

Sojiro frowned slightly. "Don't go badmouthing one of my regulars. Though you're not wrong, I suppose. Still, I wouldn't bother her unless you actually need to. I hear she's brilliant but a bit unorthodox."

"Unorthodox how?" Ren questioned.

The older man shrugged. "Not sure entirely, just a few rumors I heard. Anyway, there's something more important we need to talk about," he said as his expression grew more serious.

The younger man tensed. "And that would be?"

Sakura folded his arms. "I got a call from your school saying that you missed almost the entire day because you left to help a peer get to the hospital. But the school was this close to calling the authorities to search for the lot of you."

Ren adjusted his glasses. "So I should have just let my Sensei struggle on her own to get help?"

"Look, you can drop the attitude," the man said sharply before sighing as he rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm not upset with your actions, and it's obvious to me that you're not just a punk. However, that doesn't mean you're not a troublemaker. You should be doing everything to avoid garnering attention."

"Believe me. I had no intention of doing anything other than going to class this morning. Things just took a strange direction, and I couldn't just stand by."

Boss offered a weary look at the boy. "Just try and be mindful in the future. You're still on probation, and any attention from law enforcement isn't good."

"I understand, believe me when I say I don't want their attention either."

"Good, I'm glad t-" the man trailed off as a ring filled the air.

The Cafe Owner pulled his phone from his pocket before opening it and holding it against his ear. His tone became softer almost immediately as he spoke. "Hey, what's up?"

Following a response on the other end, he merely nodded to himself. "Yeah, I'm closing down here soon. I should be there in a half-hour at most, I promise."

Ren quirked an eyebrow, clearly curious about the exchange.

The older man, seemingly sensing the pair of eyes watching him, shifted his focus to Ren for a moment as he covered the phone a moment before giving the boy a sharp look.

"What are you gawking at? Don't you have better things to do? Maybe follow the doctor's advice and get some rest," the man grumbled.

The dark-haired young man offered a curt nod. "Uh right, sorry!" he offered as he swiftly turned and started up the stairs as he barely heard the excuse Sojiro was giving the person on the other end of the phone.

Kamoshida's Palace

Top Floor

Tower

Ann hugged her knees against her chest as she sat curled against a wall facing the door. 'No one has come. Why did I expect otherwise? The only person who cares enough doesn't even know that I'm in this strange place.'

Almost as if in response to her thoughts, she heard what sounded like scratching at the door.

"W-What do you want now?!" the model called out with a mixture of fear and frustration.

However, it wasn't Kamoshida's voice or one of the shadows that responded, but instead a softer boyish tone.

"Hey, please don't panic. I'm here to help. You're Ann, right?" the voice asked in a gentle tone.

The blonde blinked a couple of times before slowly crawling across the floor till she was directly next to the door. "How do you know my name?"

There was a brief shuffling sound before a response followed. "Oh, that's easy, your friends told me what happened. They had to retreat for the moment, but I've got a good feeling about them. They'll definitely come back. Believe me, they didn't want to leave you behind."

A weak smile settled on the girl's face. "Friends, huh? That's news to me. Who are you? Can't you just get me out?"

"I tried my hardest to do that, but this door is locked up tight. Even my lockpicks aren't going to work. I bet the king himself has the only key. I hate to admit it, but I can't face him on my own,"

"If that's the case, why did you come this far? Aren't you risking being caught by talking to me?" Ann asked as she felt tears welling up in her eyes.

A pause followed before she heard a quiet laugh. "I'm a dashing hero; risks just come with the territory. Besides, I didn't want you to lose hope, Lady Ann."

The girl's eyes widened slightly at the boy's apparent bravery. She felt a few tears fall down her cheeks, and her voice quivered a bit as she spoke. "Lady Ann? Wait, you never did tell me your name."

"Oh right, I'm the gallant thief known as Morgana. You have my word that we'll spring you from this temporary cell,"

"Jeez, you're kind of overly dramatic," Ann felt herself cracking a faint smile as she wiped a few tears out of her eyes. "I have almost no idea what's going on, but knowing I'm not alone means a lot."

"I have to keep an eye out for patrols, but I'm all ears, Lady Ann. I'll answer any questions I can. You're probably fairly confused right now."

The blonde smiled slightly, finding herself appreciative of the company even in the form of a practical stranger. "Thank you, Morgana. I guess the first question is, what is the place?"

A quiet whistle followed from the other side of the door. "That will take some explaining, but I'll do my best..."

Yongen Jaya

Cafe Leblanc (Attic)

Ren stared at his phone screen as he tried to keep his eyes from betraying him as he lay on his bed. The small chirp from the group text caught his attention though.

Ryuji: I still can't believe all that shit really happened. Like I'm freaking beat but still wired at the same time

Kasumi: I know how you feel Ryuji Senpai. I almost fell asleep in the bath earlier, but now I'm wide awake again. What about you Senpai?

Ren: If it weren't for my phone chiming I think I would have nodded off already

Kawakami: Jeez, you all should get some rest. Your teachers, including myself, aren't going to go easy on you just because of what happened today.

Ren: Sensei is right, besides we're going to need all our strength if we're going to save Ann

Ryuji: Hell yeah, we'll hit Kamoshida with everything we got. He'll never see it coming!

Kasumi: I met someone else today who I think is being abused by him, I can't believe what he's been allowed to get away with

Kawakami: I had no intention of sharing this, but he threatened me earlier in the parking lot.

Ryuji: SAY WHAT?! The fuck?!

Ren: What happened Sensei?

Kawakami: Suguru noticed something was off with our cover story. The Principal seems to have bought, but he knows I was lying. I don't care to get into all the details, but he's given me an ultimatum. If I don't tell him what really happened, he's planning on releasing something that could get me fired.

Kasumi: I'm so sorry Sensei, I thought at the time our story would work. Is there anything we can do to help?

Ryuji: Seriously! Just name it. I'll deck the asshole for ya!

Ren: Calm down Ryuji. Last thing you want is an assault charge. Believe me, it won't work out well for you

Kawakami: Amamiya is right. It's no one's fault. At the time our little lie was the best option. I don't know what to do. Even if I wanted to save myself, it's not like he'd believe me anyways.

Kasumi: That's unfortunately true, but if he's only looking for some sort of gossip maybe we can just think of a better lie to tell him?

Ryuji: I still think he deserves a ducking fist to the face. That's my suggestion.

Ryuji: *Fucking damn autocorrect

Ren: For now I think we have to focus on saving Ann and then come up with a way of dealing with Kamoshida. Sensei how much time do we have? Did he give you any kind of timeline?

Kawakami: Until the first of the month. Look, I've gotta go. I'm busy right now. I don't like you all being involved in this business, but just be careful. See you tomorrow. Also this may sound cruel, but don't try and stage a rescue until after school tomorrow!

Ryuji: Uh WTF? Why would we wait? No way we can just leave Takamaki in there for that long

Kawakami: Sakamoto use the gray matter between your ears. We're neck deep in a situation because of the vanishing act this morning. If you all disappear again and don't return for hours, what excuse are you going to use then?

Ren: I don't like it, but she makes a good point. We won't be able to use the same excuse twice and no one is going to buy some other wild story two days in a row

Kasumi: I just hope Takamaki Senpai can hold out. Sensei, am I wrong to assume you don't plan on coming with us?

Kawakami: You saw what happened there. I almost got Ren killed because I was just a bystander. While you might need my sagely advice, I'd be more in your way. The best I can do right now is try to run interference if anyone asks any questions.

Ryuji: Hey teach! Don't sell yourself short. What if you got one of them personas yourselves? I bet you could kick some major ass!

Kawakami: I appreciate the vote of confidence Sakamoto, but I doubt that. From what I could see those things seemed to appear when someone confronts their inner demons. Least that's how it seems to me. Let's just say as you get older, you get way more demons and a lot more baggage. Now go to bed already. If this chat pings again, I'll confiscate your phones tomorrow.

Ren let out a bemused laugh at the last text. 'She might be coarse, but she's really kind. I wonder what she's been through? It must be something difficult. Especially if she's so reluctant to speak about it and Kamoshida seems to have blackmail against her.' he thought as his eyes fluttered as he stared up at the ceiling for a moment. 'This is not how I expected my probation to start. So much for living an honest life as a student. Just wait for us, Ann, we're coming for you..' he thought before his thoughts began drifting off as he felt himself fading from consciousness...

Suddenly Ren's eyes snapped open as he found himself once more in the Velvet Room. He immediately tensed as a sudden bang to his side drew his attention.

There he saw Caroline standing there holding out her baton with a haughty expression. "It's about time you woke up, inmate!"

"You were unresponsive for an extended period," Justine agreed as she stepped into view on the opposite side of her twin.

"Nice to see you both too," the boy muttered as he stood up before scratching the back of his head.

Caroline's nose scrunched up. "Don't speak so informally to us. You will watch your tongue and show proper respect. Now stand up straight!"

'Jeez, is she always this high strung? She's definitely a tsundere. I'd be willing to bet on it,' he mused to himself as he straightened his posture.

Justine cleared her throat. "Our master wishes to address you. It is in your interest that you heed his words."

Ren merely nodded as he took a step forward, only to be reminded of the chains binding him as he reached the cell door. He peered out as he stared at the strange man seated at the desk. "You wished to speak to me?"

The long-nosed man chuckled. "Yes indeed, but first, let us celebrate our reunion. There is much to celebrate as it seems you've awoken to your powers, unique ones at that."

"You mean Persona, right?" Ren asked with a tight-lipped expression.

"Indeed. With your awakening and those around you, your path to rehabilitation can finally begin in earnest."

The boy shook his head. "What does any of that actually mean?"

Igor chuckled once more. "It would be better to let you learn that for yourself. They say the journey is more important than the destination. For the moment, you shall train the power of your Persona. You may be wondering what this power is, correct? A Persona is in other words a 'mask' it's the defense you wear around one's heart when confronting threats. However, only those who have a rebellious will can awaken to a Persona. Not just anyone can find it in themselves to confront their inner selves."

"...I remember Arsene mentioning he was my rebel's soul. So he's an extension of my heart then?" Ren asked.

"Correct. My, I certainly have high hopes for you and these new allies you've forged. I do hope you don't disappoint."

The student offered a wary expression. "What would happen if I did disappoint you?"

"Ah, I would not trouble yourself with such concerns. I believe you will understand in due time. Regardless, I take it you're now familiar with the Metaverse Navigator?" Igor asked with his ever-present grin.

"Metaverse Navigator?" the boy questioned with a puzzled expression.

"Indeed. Such a tool allows one to travel between reality, palaces, and the metaverse in general."

Ren shook his head. "I'm not sure I understand entirely."

The long-nosed man chuckled. "Ah, my apologies. Surely you have recognized something strange on your phone, that is a gift from me. That is the navigator. It utilizes keywords to grant one access to certain locations within the metaverse."

"...That explains that strange app and some of the strange experiences I've been happening," Ren murmured.

Caroline growled. "That navigator is a gift from our master inmate! You'd better take care when using it!"

"Indeed, should you use it well, you will develop into a fine thief," Justine added.

"Thief?" Ren questioned as he awaited a response.

Igor seemed to ignore the query. "In any case, as you may know by now, it is possible for others to gain access to this navigator as well. I shall continue to bestow it to those who may aid you on your journey. Just remember the bonds you forge are the key to releasing your shackles. Without them, you will never escape what fate has in store for you...

Tokyo

Kawakami's Apartment

"Hey, I'm sorry for calling you out of the blue like this, and especially so late. I wasn't even sure if you still had the same number." Sadayo said as she leaned against her outdoor balcony before staring down at the street level below.

There was a long pause before another woman's voice responded.

"You needn't apologize. I've always been a night owl. That's something from high school that never really changed. It's good to hear your voice, Sadayo. I've lost touch with a lot of people we graduated with."

The teacher offered a pained smile. "That doesn't surprise me. People grow older and go their separate ways. It's only natural, but with our school, there was plenty that wasn't normal."

"...Have you been back since graduation? I know it may seem like a futile gesture, but they built a memorial. I'm not the most sentimental person, but even I can't help but pay my respects periodically."

The dark-haired woman idly played with her hair as a somber expression remained on her face. "No, I could never bring myself to return. My parents and so many others were just gone. Most of the city was more than happy to sweep it away and move on, but for those of us who lost people, it felt like living in a graveyard."

"I understand that feeling well. My folks were already long gone, but I lost someone who'd become like a little brother to me. Life has moved on, but it's certainly not easy. Not that I mind this call in the slightest, but I have to admit I am surprised nonetheless. Is there anything I can do, or do you just need someone to talk to?"

*Author Note*

I apologize for the short hiatus. Monster Hunter Rise came out and sort of sucked me into a blackhole haha. As always a huge shoutout to Pettypunk for beta'ing this. I really appreciate it.

Please if you can possibly drop a favorite/follow and I truly appreciate all reviews. Thank you all and have a wonderful day!

Review Section:

Wendel Santana: Continue the fic, pls!

Your wish is my command. Seriously though, thank you for the follow, favorite, and review. It means a lot.

UltimateCCC: Time for the roller-coaster ride of Act 3 but with collecting cash(ka-ching) and lots of it.
Morgana can be like one of those service animals to comfort.

Haha ironically it seems like he served as one in this chapter for Ann. Though she has no idea she's talking to a cat...I mean human. Totally a human.

Zekyram: Nice. Ryuji got his awakening! But now, they are forced to leave the castle and recover. Oh, and Makoto makes an appearance already! This makes me curious... will other people accidently enter the palace as well? Like, they see a strange group of people (a delinquent, a student on probation, an honors student, and a teacher) and they get curious. Hmm...well, I guess I have to wait for the next chapter! Great job as always!

Thank you so much for reviewing. Yeah it's quite an eccentric group. Getting to write more original bits for this chapter was a lot of fun. Hope you enjoyed and what I have planned.

FoxOnPie: In response to your response, I don't really agree with your reasoning. I mean, the P3 protagonist was the only person to have an extreme response like that, and even in this game, the degree to which people are left exhausted isn't consistent; hell, Sumire was relatively fine in the game, which is a far cry from what happened here. The whole thing just comes across as a great disservice for her overall agency, and it feels like it continues here since she couldn't get out of her cell on her own and then, after joining up with Ren and Ryuji, proceeds to not have a lot in the way of relevancy for the rest of the chapter. There's a difference between characters having weaknesses and characters lacking agency, and this feels more like the latter. I'm hoping the story improves in that manner.

Hey that's totally cool. I'll do my best and that's all I can do. I appreciate your review and the read regardless.
