Their conversation was interrupted by a knocking on the door, "Come in." Korra said.
A slender man wearing a pair of glasses entered, he had an expression of a dead man, when he opened his mouth, his voice sounds as dead as his eyes: "Boss, Lin is outside."
"Let her in Ryu, say nothing about the presence of our guest." the triad boss requested.
The man nodded and left. "Get in, don't make any sound and don't come out until I told you to", Korra opened a hidden door behind the wooden panel wall, "I bet she's going to ask me about your father's case."
When Lin entered, she saw the White Flame sitting behind her desk, alone.
"How can I assist you, Chief Beifong?" Korra lifted a corner of her mouth, "Would you like to take a seat?" she gestured to the empty chair in front of her desk.
"Pass that," replied the Chief of Police, apparently not buying for the small talk. She took a quick glance at the floor: wood, again. Such a quirky jerk, she thought, the entire house was covered with wooden floor, so that she couldn't use her seismic sense for lie detection. "Were you present at the night of Hiroshi's death? Did you see anything?"
"No, Chief Beifong. I was listening to the pro-bending match on the radio, Ryu can be the witness." The host answered, "maybe Miss Sato can provide you with more valuable information?"
"I went to her mansion earlier; she was nowhere to be seen." Lin said, her eyes fixing on Korra, searching for the slightest sign of hesitation.
"I wouldn't know then," the latter replied calmly, seemingly forgot the fact that the very person Lin has been looking for is only a wall away from them, "Unfortunately, I can't help you with that."
"Beware," the police chief said coldly, "I've been crashing the triads these days. Don't get killed, I still want to arrest you."
"Thank you for your concern on my safety, Chief Beifong," Korra said, her face turning into a smile, these were the triads that refused to follow her order, Lin was merely playing her games, "but I have to disappoint you with the second matter, for I am an honest businesswoman."
Lin left without a word.
"Asami, you can come out now." the avatar knocked gently on the wall.
"Wow, I'm impressed, if Lin found out I'm here, we will both be in serious trouble." the nonbender responded with a smile, "I need to go home now, she's only going to be more suspicious if she keeps finding me missing."
"Wise move. Tell her some truth: Amon killed your father. You know what to do with the rest. At the meanwhile, I will bribe those politicians in the City Council for an election, so take advantage of your conversation with Lin."
"Trust me, keep updated with the newspapers, you won't be disappointed."
In the next few months, Asami appeared frequently on Republic City's newspapers: "CEO Assassinated, Equalist Leader Deemed Responsible", "Equalist Leader Threatened My Father for Funds", "Unsung Hero: Waterbender Exposes Amon's Identity, Saving Future Industry's New CEO", "Equalists Stop The War Against Benders, Starting A War Against Crimes", "CEO of Future Industry Collaborates with Equalists to Stop Triad Activities", "Crimes Go Down by 80%, Police Chief Said", "City Council Voting 4:1 for Election", "Election to be held in 3 Months", "Asami Sato: First Nonbender Candidate"
...
"What on earth is going on here?" Bolin exclaimed, "no wonder I haven't seen Asami in these days, she's been busy fighting crimes and running for the president!" while playing with his fire ferret dancing on his shoulders.
"Alright Bo," said Mako, his firebender brother, "The only thing I care about now is: since she somehow decided to work with the Equalists. I wonder if she would continue to fund our team."
"Don't worry about it Mako, of course she will," the earthbender responded with a cheerful tone, "it says on the newspaper, she's doing this to stop the triads. Besides, she's our friend!" Despite being only 2 years younger than his brother, he seemed to be way less mature.
"Almost forgot, where is Korra? Haven't seen her for a while."
"The waterbender girl of our team? I don't know. Could she be the one mentioned in the newspapers?" Bolin said.
"Very possible, she can bend water into a mist. She did that in our championship match to impair our opponents' vision, remember?" the firebender always pays attention to details, and also has a good memory, "there's no picture on the page so I guess we will have to ask her in person."
"I guess you're right," the younger brother spoke with a hint of disappointment, "too bad she hates the camera." The earthbender never seemed to comprehend his teammate's aversion to the camera, the waterbender always avoids the journalists, even when they won the final. But to him, on the other hand, the flashing light of a camera can be even more valuable than the medal.
"We'd better get ready," the older brother said, "Asami phoned me earlier, she will meet us 7:30 in the evening at Narook's Seaweed Noodlery for our late due championship celebration."
"Hey, that also means I can ask Korra if she's the one in the newspaper!" Bolin added enthusiastically, his right hand already reaching for his jacket.
"Yea right…" Mako sighed, his palm slapping on the forehead, "let's go Bo."
...
"Long time no see everybody. We've been busy fighting the Equalists and preparing for the election." The waterbender said, "Asami is running for the president."
"I knew it! You're the waterbender in the newspaper who defeated Amon!"
"Hush Bolin, you're going to bring a bunch of journalists!"
"Why do you try so hard to avoid being famous anyway?" clearly her attitude raised the firebender's suspiscion.
Asami's looked to her direction. Subtly, she shook her head. Not the full story, not to them. "I will tell you after you guys have answered my question: are you interested in being the new government's cabinet members?"
(note: Ryu is one of the new airbenders after Harmonic Convergence in the original timeline, but in this timeline he definitely managed to get out of his basement by himself, working as Korra's assistant)
