A/N Sorry guys I was working overtime lately and trying to get this story moving at the same time. Anyhow I hope you enjoy this instalment. Thanks so much for reading and reviewing. Stay safe everyone.
Jennifer didn't know where she was when Annabelle shook her awake the next morning. It felt like it was the middle of the night.
"Come on get up Jennifer, we have to start work in half an hour."
Jennifer hadn't slept very well she had searched everywhere for Jonathan the night before and had to finally give up at around midnight. The others weren't too pleased as they had to go looking for her.
Annabelle was already dressed in her green jacket and hat and was ready to head out.
"What time is it," Jennifer mumbled, trying to locate her watch.
"It's just after 5.30 come on sleepy head."
"You can go into the kitchen and have a wash. Hurry up Jennifer. We will all be in trouble if you don't get a move on." Melanie threw her a towel and bent to tidy her own camp bed. Jennifer hauled herself up, she had meant to put on her own clothes but as she looked all around her she realised that someone had taken them in the night. There was nothing else for it she would have to put on the uniform.
When she finally stumbled out into the school room Jennifer was so tired she felt dazed. She was wearing the green chord jacket, green cap and shapeless brown pants. It was so early it was still dark out. Melanie and Annabelle were waiting outside for her.
"Will you come on, you're not on holiday now," Melanie snapped at her.
"Annabelle when can I see my husband?" Jennifer asked.
"This again, she's like a broken down record," Melanie grinned.
Jennifer turned to face her. "I'm not a broken down record, maybe you've accepted this ridiculous situation but I haven't. I need to find my husband."
Melanie put a hand to the bracelet she was wearing. "You see this Jennifer, this isn't some fashion accessory this is a tracker, they can track our every movement. Your Jonathan and my Robert wear the orange bracelet, they're with the other camp. That means we cannot meet up, But if you want to moan the entire time you're here then go right ahead but it will be a lonely stay for you. "
"This is not a stay it's captivity, this is not a job. What is wrong with you people."
Annabelle got between them. "Please don't fight, the guards will hear you. They will come and we will all be running laps tonight. Come on, we will be late."
They walked on in silence. Annabelle was careful to keep herself between them.
They met with other workers on the path up to the hills. Jennifer couldn't believe how chipper they were this hour in the morning. They joked to eachother as they walked along. It just felt so strange. Once they reached the top of the hill they were imediately seperated into groups to begin picking apples. A man wearing a brown jacket and cap was the one organising everyone into groups.
He nodded to Jennifer "You don't have a satchel, what are you supposed to collect your apples in. Go down to the shop and get one. Be quick."
She was about to head off in the direction she knew best but he took hold of her jacket and pushed her off in another direction.
"Head down that way," he told her.
She glanced at the two guards in black as she passed them. They seemed to be overseeing the whole operation and it gave her chills to note the weapons they were holding. She went down through the trees heading in the general direction of the sea front and the shop.
She let out a muffled scream as a hand was clamped over her mouth and she was pulled in behind a tree. She spun around, her eyes as wide as saucers. Gently he took his hand down from her mouth.
Imediately tears began to spill from her eyes as she threw her arms around him.
"Oh Jonathan," she whispered as she held him. Jonathan held her close squeezing his eyes shut against the tears that were forming there.
He put her at arms length and looked her over.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
Jennifer gave a shaky nod. "It's all so strange here Jonathan, it's like these people are totally brainwashed."
"Institutionalised more like," Jonathan said. "Robert said he would send you down here so we could meet up but we can't talk for long. Our bracelets will tell them we are together. Jennifer, listen to me very carefully neither of us should attempt an escape. They are watching us and the punishment for an escape attempt is a whipping."
Jennifer gasped. "Are you serious?"
"I'm afraid so, now Max is bound to notify the authorities once we don't arrive home tomorrow."
"But Jonathan, we don't know where Sonas Island is."
"I know, we were foolish not to find out. They knew what they were doing in bringing us here."
"I'm so sorry I brought you here Jonathan," Jennifer whispered, tears glistening in her eyes.
Jonathan pulled her close and kissed the top of her head.
"Don't blame yourself. I could have done some research myself. Don't worry my love, I'll get us out of here somehow."
"I wish we were in the same team at least," Jennifer said looking down at her bright green bracelet.
"I wish I could tare this thing off," Jonathan grinned as he held up his orange bracelet.
She was about to reply when both bracelets began to flash red.
"What do you make of that," Jennifer asked as she held up hers.
"I think they have decided that we are talking too long. Jennifer go on, and be careful. We will talk again soon." Jonathan gave her a hurried kiss and turned to head back up the hill towards the others.
"Jonathan...I love you."
He looked back at her, "I love you too sweetheart, we'll talk soon."
Jennifer felt a new sense of purpose. Just seeing Jonathan had restored her energy. She quickly realised that there was no reason to feel so alone, he was here with her and they would escape this awful place together.
H&H
As she headed towards the store the man there was just opening the shutters.
"Enjoying your holiday are you?" the storekeeper asked.
Jennifer didn't answer.
"Yes that was in rather bad taste, come in. What do you need?" he asked as he went around switching on the lights.
"Some kind of a satchal to collect apples," she muttered, leaning against the counter.
"Aw yes," he went around back and came out with a large leather messenger bag. "Don't let anyone take that on you, it's brand new." he told her.
She stared at the bracelet around his wrist. He was also with the green team. She had thought he was one of the captors.
"Francis Sloan, how do you do," he reached out and offered her his hand.
Jennifer shook it with a tired smile.
"I only came here to advise them on decor for their holiday homes. That was two years ago."
Jennifer shook her head. "Doesn't anyone ever come looking for us here?" she asked.
"I'd say they do," Sloan shrugged "but nowon knows where this Island is. We don't even know."
Jennifer looked so dispondent Sloan gave her a dimpled smile.
"Cheer up sweetheart, here have one of these."
He reached under the counter and brought up a muffin. He placed it in her hands. Jennifer swallowed hard as she suddenly realised how hungry she was. The muffin was made of delicate sponge and had blue berries running through it.
"Thank you," she said.
Sloan took hold of her and guided her towards a door. Eat it in here. There's milk in the fridge. Jennifer found herself in a tiny kitchen much like the one back at the school. She found a glass and helped herself to some milk. She never enjoyed anything so much, compared to the bland food they were forced to eat this was heaven.
She was just eating through the last blueberry when she suddenly froze. Someone had entered the shop.
"Have you seen a red headed woman?"
"She was here but she's gone," Sloan told them.
They left again without another word. Seconds later Sloan rushed into the kitchen.
"Here give me that," he took the glass from her and guided her out towards the front door. On the way he took the messenger bag from the counter and slung it over her shoulder. Once outside he pointed to the hills behind the shops.
"Go up that way, they have gone to check the Orchard over there. If you hurry you can be back with the others and just say you got lost. Now go." He pushed her on and hurried back into the store.
Jennifer frowned, what was all the fuss about. She looked out at the sea. The sun was starting to rise on the horizon splashing the sky with streaks of firey red. It was a beautiful sight. But one she could not enjoy. She turned and began to walk in the direction he had shown her.
Jennifer was tired just walking back up the steep hills. As she made it back to the others a large lady approached and scowled down at her.
"Did you get lost, I'll let it go today as you're new but if it happens again you will have to run two laps around the Island after dark. Now go down there with your bag and collect as many apples as you can. Once your bag is full you can dump them out carefully into one of the large baskets over there. But do not bruise the apples. They have to be perfect, understand?"
Jennifer didn't answer. She made a move to go join the others but the woman grabbed a rough hold of her jacket.
"I asked you do you understand?" she snarled.
"Yes, I understand," Jennifer said.
She let go of her jacket and Jennifer staggered back a little.
"You watch yourself Hart, I already don't like your attitude."
Jennifer bit back the tears threatening to fall. She instead concentrated on the task of collecting the apples and putting them into her leather bag.
"That's Ingrid," Annabelle told her without looking up from her work.
"Don't make an enemy of her Jennifer, she's a bitch."
Jennifer could see Jonathan in the distance working with the other members of the brown team. There were women and men and some children within the group, all with their heads bowed intent on their work. The guards walked amongst their ranks pushing people over and bullying them into harder work. Jennifer was shocked at the level of intimidation and wondered why they had never noticed this before among the workers here.
"Hay you," Jennifer found herself slammed up against the tree she was picking from. "concentrate on your work. There's no time here for dreaming."
Jennifer imediately started picking the apples again, anxious not to draw attention to herself. She felt lost and vulnarable without Jonathan by her side. The apple picking went on for two hours. Jennifer's shoulders felt achy and sore by the time they were finished. This wasn't a leisurely stroll through an orchard picking apples for a pie they were constantly called on to more speed. Jennifer trudged over and dumped her last bag of apples into a large basket with the others.
"Well done Jennifer, they look really good." the man said, putting a hand in and rolling them about. She looked up at him in surprise.
"I'm Robert, I'm Melanie's husband. it's best if we don't shake hands. I'm with the other team."
"It's nice to meet you," Jennifer tried to smile.
"Jonathan's ok. We're showing him the ropes." Robert went on.
The little man who had carried the Harts luggage that first night sidled up to them. He gave her a small smile and bowed in respect to her.
"I am Rusty, I help Jonathan. He good worker."
Robert looked up as they had caught the attention of one of the guards.
"We'd better break this up, Jennifer, you go with Mel and Annabelle now. They will look after you."

Jennifers heart gave a little lift as there was now talk of breakfast. The muffin and milk seemed such a long time ago. The sun was now fully up in the sky and a pleasent breeze settled in around them. Jennifer's shoulders ached as she went into the restaurant to pick up her food package.
Once again they brought their food to the park and sat at one of the benches. Jennifer frowned as she peeled back the brown paper and gazed down at a cold boiled egg and two hard pieces of brown bread and butter. Once again there was only milk to drink. She so needed a cup of Max's coffee.
The others immediately started in on a conversation. They were talking about the different characters on the island. Jennifer wasn't really listening. She was still pining the loss of a decent breakfast.
"Maria is so beautiful," Annabelle was saying now as she ate tiny pieces of her bread and butter. "She dress's really well. She's like a model."
"Who is Maria?" Jennifer asked suddenly.
They all went silent and looked over at her.
"Maria is Gill's sister," Melanie explained. "She's one of the nicer people here."
Jennifer bit her tongue and made a conscous decision to say nothing. All she could think was how could anyone consider any member of the Sonas family nice.
After breakfast Melanie bid them good bye and headed off to her cleaning job, Annabelle and Jennifer headed up to the school. Jennifer stared at the clock on the wall. It was only 8.30 in the morning. To her it felt so much later as she had done two hours work already.
"Come quickly Jennifer, we will get our school dresses on and then we might have time for coffee in the kitchen before school starts." Annabelle ran to put on the kettle and then brought Jennifer into their little bedroom to change.
The dress looked hidious. It was massive on Jennifer and the belt didn't help much. It had two big square pockets on the skirt and a big white colar. The lemon gingham was like somethng you'd put on a small child but Jennifer didn't care. She hurried into the kitchen for the promised cup of coffee. Annabelle handed her a cup of steaming hot coffee.
"Oh no, I put milk and sugar in it, I forgot you weren't Melanie," Annabelle said.
"It's fine," Jennifer shook her head. It was more than fine, it was delicious. Annabelle handed her a small candy bar to go with it and for a moment Jennifer nearly felt happy.
"After this we need to go and collect the Sonas children."
Jennifer nodded savouring the sweetness of the chocolate candy bar. The coffee and chocolate had some what revived her energy levels.
"Will you go to the house of Gill Sonas Jennifer, she always keeps me talking for ages."
"Sure," Jennifer smiled. Despite everything she was starting to grow fond of Annabelle.
They headed off then and began knocking on doors and rounding up children.
Gill Sonas herself answered the door when Jennifer rang. She lived in a beautiful house on a cliff overlooking the sea. Jennifer just about resisted the urge to throw her off the cliff. Gill Sonas anwered the door wearing a satin dressing gown. Jennifer felt she had seen that before. Gill's embarassed look told her all she needed to know. It was Jennifer's dressing gown.
"Come on in Jennifer, they are just finishing their breakfast," she said breezing back down the hall.
"I will say you look very nice in that dress Jennifer, very professional."
Jennifer didn't answer, she stood against a wall watching the children as they finished their cereal and orange juice.
"Is Annabelle showing you the ropes ok, she's a very good sort isn't she?"
Jennifer turned her head slowly to face her.
"When are you going to let us leave?" she asked.
Gill Sonas looked as if Jennifer's cool way of speaking had hurt her feelings.
"There's no need to be like this Jennifer. You could try and give this place a chance."
"You are guilty of multiple kidnappings. If you let us go now things might go a bit easier for you."
Gill crossed in front of her and headed out of the kitchen.
"I better get dressed," she muttered as she left the room.
Jennifer watched her go. She could not start something in a room full of children and felt sure the guards would punish either herself or Jonathan if she did. But she would not tolerate cheerful conversation with this evil woman.
The rest of the morning was taken up with school work. Jennifer worked with the five youngest children. She was soon emersed in a game involving shapes and colours.
Annabelle was trying to teach the older kids but there was one child who would not comply with the program. Shellie Sonas, Gills 15 year old daughter felt the constant need to distract everyone around her. She had a constant steam of wise cracks. Jennifer considered it a little immature for a young woman her age but Annabelle laughed along and tried to keep it all on track. Jennifer decided to address the issue in their lunch break.
"You don't need to put up with that, I mean I don't know why I should care about any of this but she is distracting the whole class. Haven't you spoken to her mother?"
Annabelle looked pleased that Jennifer was starting to take an interest in the goings on.
"Jennifer, these are Sonas children. They are spoilt. Gill Sonas will not hear a word against her daughter."
"I don't care about Gill Sonas or her spoilt daughter but it seems unfair on the rest of the class. This is possibly the only schooling they will ever get."
"I'm really glad you came here Jennifer," Annabelle said suddenly.
"Even Melanie has said it, you are really fitting in here now."
Jennifer leaned forward in her seat. "Annabelle, we have got to get out of here. Sweatheart, you are working for six dollars a week. This isn't right. You deserve better."
"Jennifer, the guards they whipped my Rusty, all because we tried to leave when the boat came for the apples. They are dangerous people. You best just do what they want and eventually you be happy here. It's not so bad."
Jennifer gave up and took a bite of her healthy, healthy apple. At least this place would be good for her diet. That's literally all you could say in it's favour.
"I think I might just tackle young Shellie Sonas tomorrow," Jennifer said.
"There's no school tomorrow," Annabelle said as she took a drink from her carton of milk. There's no school at weekends.
Jennifer's heart gave a little lift. They would spend the morning collecting apples and then she would be free in the afternoon to find Jonathan and orcastrate some sort of a plan.
She nodded as she took another bite, she trusted Annabelle but knew it was wise not to share too much information with people here. But she felt in her heart that tomorrow would be a better day.
