Last time on ExtraOrdinary, the mysterious assassin Baldur emerged from a portal leading to an entirely different world and arrived all the way to Ivalor with intent to kill Garrett Grayson for reasons unknown. However, the Esper Rosé refused to go down without a fight and proceeded to exchange blows with the stranger whilst the other members of Team Esper evacuated the citizens of Ivalor and all visiting aliens to safety with the aid of the twins Jikan and Kukan. As they waited for Garrett to fulfill his end of the duty, Night-Tail proceeded to explain that the determination of his rival is what fuels his power. What could he mean by that? Find out now!
ExtraOrdinary: A Psychic's Tail
Chapter 5: Sheer Determination - The Source of Garrett's Power!
Date: August 10, Age 257
Time: 12:23 PM
"D-Determination?" Jikan asks. "You're really not that smart, are you?"
Night-Tail only scoffs at Jikan's snide remark. "If you won't believe me," he replies. "Then perhaps I'll have to explain it to you."
Dodge, Pip, Gobbles, Phoebe, and Hua huddle in to listen to the story Night-Tail has to tell.
"This is what I mean when I say that determination is the source of Garrett's strength." Night-Tail says.
Flashback...
Date: April 6, Age 244
A young Night-Tail leans towards Aunt Arachne's house, watching silently as a small group of delinquents whale on a young Garrett.
Hua struggles to break free from Phoebe's grip and try to step in the skirmish to no avail. "Leave Garrett alone, jerk-holes!" she yelled. "He didn't do anything to you!"
Garrett cries out in pain as blow after blow is landed on him.
"You don't belong here!" one bully yells.
"Go back to whatever hole you crawled out of!" another bully shouts.
"Give up on life and die, freak!" a third bully hollers.
"Alright, guys... that's enough." Night-Tail chimes in, calling off his small gang.
Garrett coughs up a bit of blood as Hua and Phoebe run over to him. Night-Tail does the same, if only to help the human up.
"Why?" Phoebe demands. "We weren't even bothering you guys, so what warranted beating the crap out of Garrett?!"
"I apologize for the behavior of my friends," Night-Tail says. "But they are right about one thing; this kid... he isn't like us. He should never have come to Ivalor, even if it was because of circumstances beyond his control."
"Granted, Garrett might be different from the other kids," Hua chimes in. "But he has just as much right to be here as the rest of us! He has a home here in Ivalor, whether you jerks like it or not!"
Night-Tail could only look at Garrett silently.
Aunt Arachne can only look on at the scene in sadness as two individuals appear behind her. One is a lavender-skinned feline-like individual donning what appears to be a somewhat Egyptian attire, and the other is a blue-skinned lean man much taller than the former with a large ring around his neck.
"L-Lord Beerus! Whis!" Aunt Arachne exclaims as she bows before the two individuals. "W-What brings such powerful beings here to Ivalor of all places?"
"As much as I hate to confess this," Beerus replies. "My assistant and I have come here only to check on the boy, see how he's doing."
"You're referring to Garrett, right?" Aunt Arachne asks.
"That is correct, Annabeth." Whis replies. "We have this... friend of ours who would request us to keep an eye on Garrett occasionally."
Aunt Arachne looks outside to see Garrett getting beat up by the bullies yet again. This scene causes her to tear up a bit as Beerus and Whis take notice.
"He'll never make it to his adult years..." Beerus says, yawning in the process. "Those brats are gonna kill that boy before too long."
"Now, I wouldn't quite write young Garrett off just yet, Lord Beerus." Whis replies.
"And why not?" Beerus asks.
"Neither you or Annabeth might realize this," Whis replies. "But I sense in Garrett a hidden potential that is like no other. Given time, and the proper training, he could end up surpassing even his own mother. In fact, I have a feeling that he could potentially leave a mark on history."
"Is that so?" Beerus asks, yawning again.
Garrett coughs up even more blood after receiving such a brutal beatdown. Night-Tail and his gang prepare to leave.
"Do yourself a favor and remain in the shadows, kid." Night-Tail says. "People like you will never be able to make a difference."
"Oh, Garrett..." Hua says, tearing up.
"You jerk-holes!" Phoebe yells out. "He didn't do anything to deserve this!"
Garrett slowly rises to his feet, softly pushing the girls aside. Unbeknownst to himself, he begins to radiate a pink aura. "That's enough..." he whispers, his anger slowly boiling.
Beerus and Whis take notice of Garrett's rising power. "Oh?" the Angel says, raising his eyebrow.
Night-Tail and his delinquents turn back around to see Garrett's aura growing more intense. What is this? the young fox thought. This kid... his aura is unlike anything I've seen.
"Telling me, the great Garrett Grayson, that I'll never be able to make a difference?!" Garrett demands, his anger and power rising at an accelerating rate. "LIKE HECK I WON'T!" His aura flares up, blowing back the surrounding kids.
"G-Garrett!" Aunt Arachne exclaims.
"Well, well," Beerus chimes in, chuckling a bit. "This is an unexpected turn of events."
"Indeed it is." Whis adds. "I had no doubt that this child would hold an immense power within him, but I did not anticipate that it would be this great at his age. As he is now, young Garrett would be able to take down a group of fully grown Saiyans single-handedly."
Garrett walks slowly towards Night-Tail's group of tormenters. "Phoebe, Hua..." he says. "Stand back. I don't want either of you to get hurt."
The girls do as he asked of them, getting a few feet away from their human friend. "Phoebe, what's happening?" Hua asks. "How did Garrett...?"
"I'm not so sure, Hua." Phoebe replies, stunned at Garrett's sudden burst of power. "I'm not sure how he did it either..."
"Come on, guys!" the afro bully says. "So what if this nerd's aura is like that? We can still beat him!" With that said, the three delinquents charge at Garrett with intent to humiliate him. However, they were going to be in for a rude awakening.
Garrett blocks the punch intended for him from the first bully and throws him over at a fair distance. The second bully tries to use his speed to get the better of the young human. However, his freckled foe proves to be the faster of the two as he easily trounces him. The largest bully attempts to use his weight to win the fight. Despite being somewhat smaller, Garrett's strength proves to be too much for the large kid as he grabs his arm and slams him to the ground. Night-Tail is shocked to have seen such a one-sided fight and flees.
"Wow..." Phoebe says, amazed by Garrett's display of power. "Watch out for the nice ones indeed..."
"Garrett..." Hua adds. "I had no idea that you could be that strong."
Beerus chuckles again, amused by what he had seen. "I had given that little brat up for dead in the beginning," he says. "But it seems that he'll do just fine here."
"Indeed, Lord Beerus." Whis adds. "And considering what we've witnessed here today, I doubt that we'll have to worry about the boy for a while."
"You two are about to head off?" Aunt Arachne asks.
"Of course," Beerus replies. "After all, destruction comes before creation. I have planets to destroy in order to maintain balance in this Universe."
"Annabeth, do continue to care for Garrett, alright?" Whis chimes in. "I'd hate for you to never hear the end of it from his mother should anything happen to him."
"I will do that, as I always have, Whis. Do take care, both of you." Aunt Arachne says, bowing to the two divine beings again as they teleport out of Ivalor.
Back to the here and now...
Date: August 10, Age 257
"So now you girls see why me and the others have faith that Freckles will defeat Baldur," Night-Tail says to Jikan and Kukan. "No matter what, he will do whatever it takes to win a fight. So I'm not buying any of your fatalistic nonsense."
The twins could only look down a bit. "Even if his determination is the source of his strength," Jikan remarks. "A human is still a human. They will still remain the weakest race in this universe and beyond, and there is nothing they can do to change that."
Dodge and the others could only give Jikan a disapproving glare.
The Ravaged Mountains
Garrett and Baldur have been locked in fierce combat for quite some time. Each fighter dealing serious blows to the other, their chances of victory uncertain. Garrett is not in great shape considering the hours he spent fighting the assassin and the opposite is also true, as Baldur had received nasty battle wounds of his own.
Blast it! Baldur thought as he struggles to remain upright. This cretin's battle power is unreal! Could it be because he's the princess's son or because he had undergone intensive training? Either way, I'd better settle this fight quickly!
Garrett closes in on the assassin, having a few wounds throughout his body and bleeding a bit.
"Now, don't go giving yourself a pat on the back just yet Garrett Grayson." Baldur says. "I may not be in the best shape because of you, but I still have plenty of fight left in me." He then grows four extensive appendages from his back, each having a large sharp claw.
What the...?! Garrett thought. This guy just grew extra arms! I'd better be careful!
"It's time that you died for your sin, Garrett Grayson!" Baldur yells as he lashes out with his newly grown weapons.
Garrett runs towards Baldur in an attempt to close the distance between the two fighters, desperately trying to dodge the sharp claws that sought to rip through his flesh and end his life.
Moko flies towards the two fighters, maintaining a good distance so he doesn't get detected, and fires a barrage of ki blasts at Baldur, hoping to put a bit of hurt on him, if only a bit.
Unfortunately, Baldur takes notice of the onslaught and impales Moko with one of his long-reaching claws. "Lowly primitive piece of trash!" he growls. "Know your place!"
Moko spews blood from his mouth as he is slammed to the ground. Garrett looks on in horror.
"Moko, no!" Garrett exclaims as he finds himself pierced by the other three clawed appendages, blood spewing from his mouth.
"You shouldn't have turned a blind eye, Garrett!" Baldur yells as he lifts his foe to the sky. "Because of your mistake, your life is mine!"
Garrett coughs up even more blood, his wounds growing worse. "I-I don't understand..." he groans. "Why are you trying to kill me, dude? I did nothing to deserve this!"
"All you need to know, Garrett Grayson, is that you're the villain of this story." Baldur replies. "In order for this Multiverse to live, you must die!"
"Okay, I clearly haven't the foggiest idea what you're rambling on about," Garrett groans. "But I have zero intention of dying here and now!" With that said, he discharges a burst of ki which immobilizes the assassin.
W-What is this?! Baldur thought. Paralysis?! This dirtbag managed to paralyze me?!
Garrett uses this opportunity to escape peril and dash to Baldur's back so fast one would be forgiven for mistaking such speed for teleportation. He then slams Baldur to the ground, causing the ground below to crack like glass. "That was for Moko, you jerk." he says. He then jumps to the lower levels of the Ravaged Mountains to check on his friend.
Moko spits out a sticky saliva and covers his wound with it in order to slow his bleeding. "Man, that was too close for comfort." he says to himself. "If I had been stabbed in the heart, I would have been done for."
Garrett walks over to Moko, still bleeding from his stab wounds. "Are you alright, buddy?" he asks. "You really took a hit back there!"
"I'm fine." Moko assures his friend.
At that moment, Baldur rises from the rubble and dust, having recovered from his paralysis, and takes to the sky. His body is in even worse shape than before. "You are going to die for that, Garrett Grayson!" he yells as he generates a shadowy ki blast. "Those who defy fate itself defy Queen Titania!" He raises his arms to the air and the ki blast enlarges. "And your defiance just cost you THIS ENTIRE PLANET!"
"Seriously?!" Moko exclaims. "He's going to try to wipe out the whole planet just to take out one person?! What a sore loser!"
"Moko, you should leave." Garrett says.
"What?! But why?!" Moko asks.
"Please do as I tell you, Moko." Garrett exclaims softly. "I don't want to see you get killed."
"But what about you?!" Moko exclaims. "You really think you can stop an attack powerful enough to destroy a whole planet, don't you?!"
"...No, I don't." Garrett admits. "But if I don't try, at least, then..."
"I see..." Moko replies as he takes to the air. "Well, I hope that you do manage to pull it off." With that said, he flies off into the distance.
Garrett takes a deep sigh and looks up at Baldur, whose ki blast had grown even larger. He then spreads his arms wide and generates two small ki spheres in each hand, pink electric sparks surrounding his body. Apparently, he is charging up a big attack of his own.
Baldur could only chuckle at the human's pathetic attempt. "Muster up any amount of power you want, Garrett." he says. "The outcome of this battle is clear; I win. For few have been able to bear witness to my ultimate attack, but none have been able to escape my... LUNATIC SHADE BOMB!" He throws the large shadowy ki blast at Garrett.
Garrett presses his hands together, merging the two small ki spheres into one large ki sphere and it grows ever larger. He then raises his right hand into the air and the ki blast along with it. "DIMENSIONAL BALL!" he yells as he throws the large pink ki blast at Baldur's attack.
The two energies fly toward each other and clash, each one struggling to overwhelm the other. The collision course causes rocks to levitate as though by magic. Tremors are triggered across the Ravaged Mountains.
"What?!" Baldur exclaims. "This shouldn't be possible! A mere human...! A meager primitive...! With his own power?!" He then throws a few ki blasts to enlarge the already gigantic ki blast in order to gain the upper hand.
Garrett struggles to overpower Baldur's attack with his own, slowly sliding across the ground and the energy getting closer to him. His right arm starts to burst multiple small fountains of blood from overexertion and pressure, but he refuses to give in. With one push of determination, Garrett ensures that his attack wins out and overwhelms Baldur, sending the assassin to the sky. He pants softly, clearly tired and fatigued, and then collapses to the ground.
Oh, no... he thought. Am I actually gonna die?
As his eyes slowly close, two shadowy figures draw close to him. The battle clearly took a toll on him.
Those two figures are none other than Freya and Mithra. Freya picks up the unconscious young man, clearly impressed with the long and fierce battle.
"Mother," Mithra says. "Is he...?"
"No, my darling..." Freya assures her daughter. "This young man is still alive and well. And I must admit, that takes a special kind of bravery to risk death in order to win." She gives off a sly smile. "Let's take him home, shall we?"
Mithra silently nods as the two Fairies fly off to the Southern Ivalorian Plains.
The battle was long and hard-fought, but in the end, Garrett's sheer determination had prevailed over evil. However, the Esper Rosé's tale is far from over, as a new unknown threat seeks to destroy Ivalor. What might that threat be, you ask? Find out next time on ExtraOrdinary!
