Darius' Point of View
The second that I made it back to the doctor's office I knew that I was in some kind of trouble. Edward was waiting for me at the entrance. A glare on his face, with his arms folded across his chest. I meekly walked over to him, waiting to hear what I had done wrong. We stood there for what felt like eternity, neither one of us speaking. I didn't want to be the first one to talk, but the suspense was killing me.
"I can see that you are mad… do you have something you need to tell me?" I said timidly.
Edward's eyes softened just slightly. "Your mother got hurt, Brady attacked her." There was an edge to his tone.
I felt the wind get knocked out of me. "I-is she alright? Where is she? How did it happen?" I stammered.
"If you had stayed in the office, instead of leaving your mother here alone with a patient that was unstable and dangerous, this wouldn't have happened." He was trying hard to control his anger, I could see it clearly on his face. Edward didn't get upset with me very often, maybe only one other time in the past. But right now, this was the most angry I've ever seen him.
"I didn't think anything would happen. If I thought Brady was in the least bit violent I wouldn't have let her stay. He was perfectly fine when I left." I said with a heavy sigh.
Edward pinched the bridge of his nose, taking a few deep breaths as well. "I understand that it was impossible to see something like this coming and if it wasn't for Alice, your mother might have been killed. We showed up right in time."
"Can I see her?" I asked peering around him to see Alice was standing just inside. "I need to apologize."
Edward seemed to ignore my question. "I want you to promise me something, before I let you inside." His voice was cool, while his expression turned somber.
"Okay,"
"When someday you become the chief of this office, you never make this mistake again. You are responsible for all of your patients. If you need to take a break you call in someone who is qualified to take your place. You call in someone that knows the situation completely and is capable of taking on your responsibilities."
I swallowed hard as I let his words sink in. He was really pissed at me. Something bad must have happened to mom. If she was fine, he wouldn't be giving me a lecture on responsibility. He wouldn't be looking at me as though I'm a huge disappointment.
"I promise." I said, unable to meet his gaze.
"She is waiting for you inside." He responded, turning and walking back into the office.
I followed him in, feeling a little relieved to see Alice. She only offered me a warm smile as she came to my side and clung to me. I held her close, letting my head rest on the top of her's. I breathed in the smell of her hair, that smelled of sweet lavender.
"Darius is here Bella." Alice called out.
I turned towards the direction of foot steps, only to feel my jaw drop at the sight of my mother. Her eyes spotted me,but they weren't the usual topaz, they were a warm brown color. Her skin wasn't as pale anymore, it was more like a creamy peach color.
Without thinking I walked over to her with panic as I gently took her wrist and felt her pulse. She had a pulse. Her heart was beating. My mother right now was completely human.
"How?" Was the only thing that I could manage to say.
She shrugged her shoulders with a light laugh. "I don't really know. Brady bit me… and well… within a few minutes I was human."
"M-mom I'm so sorry, I had know idea that was going to happen." I couldn't hold back my tears. I completely broke down. This has been the worst night of my life.
"Shh," She quickly pulled me into her arms and stroked my back. "I'm not mad at all. To be honest, I'm happy."
I held onto her and just allowed myself to take comfort in her words. I felt like I was a child again. I felt like the small, scared little boy that clung desperately to his mother every time he was ever upset. I should be the one that was comforting her. I had caused her to be in this mess.
"Maybe… you can turn again? You could have someone bit you… so you can become immortal." I said as I wiped my tears away.
"We need to do further testing before doing something like that. We don't know how vampire venom is going to react with Brady's venom in her body." Edward said evenly.
"Calm down Edward, he is only a child." My mother said, giving him a firm look. Even as a human, she was still a little scary when she got angry.
Edward sighed, nodding his head. "I know, it's hard to remember some times that he is only a kid. It's unfair to give him so much responsibility. He wasn't ready. This is all my fault."
His words cut like a knife. I knew that he wasn't trying to offend me, but I was about to speak up and defend myself. I made a mistake. Everyone does. But my mother is alive. And happier. But I had no right to challenge Edward, he had a very good point. As much as I hated it, he was right. I wasn't ready for all this responsibility.
"I'll do better." Was all that I could say.
My words seemed to please Edward, he finally smiled at me for the first time, since I arrived. "That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Regardless of this situation Darius, I am proud of you."
He had a funny way of showing pride. But I wasn't about to argue. Tonight I would just keep my mother save and listen.
There was a sound of puking coming from one of the exam rooms. It sounded like a young woman.
"It's Ezra, she can't be alone considering she is pregnant. Ribbonwood isn't as safe as it used to be." Alice spoke up.
A thought occurred to me. "So, you don't have the ability to control people's memories?" I said looking back to my mother.
She shook her head. "Afraid not, I don't have any abilities now."
"So what does that mean for all the people that you used your abilities on? Does that mean they will get all of their memories back?" I asked glancing around to each of them.
My mother chewed her lip. "I actually have no idea. Maybe." She admitted. Suddenly she winced and clutched her stomach.
Edward quickly moved to her side with a worried look. "Are you alright, love?" He scanned her over.
The way that he hovered close to her, the protective stance he held. He was scared. He looked at my mother as if she was made of glass. He appeared to be on the edge of killing someone if they came too close to her.
"I'm fine, just hungry," She admitted, her cheeks warmed instantly as her stomach grumbled.
Edward's eyes seemed to brighten with fascination and devotion. "Let's get you back home, I'll cook for you." His tone was so soft.
Bella laughed her tinkling laugh. "That sounds wonderful, but I thought you would be hanging out here until Dr. Franklin came in."
"What? So now all of a sudden I'm not trustworthy enough to monitor one patient?" I grumbled.
"Don't be silly, no one is saying that." Alice pouted, bouncing over to peck my cheek. "It's been a long night, you haven't slept, why don't you come home with me?"
When Alice looked at me that way, all I wanted to do was give in, to anything she asked. I had to look away from her if I wanted to stand my ground.
"As much as I'd love to come home with you, I have responsibilities here… at least until someone qualified can replace me." I said, remembering Edward's words from before.
Edward glanced in my direction with a slight smirk on his face. I couldn't even imagine what was going on inside his head.
"Darius has made a good point. If he feels that he is physically and mentally prepared to come back to work, he can do so." Edward responded with a nod.
"I can do it," I said eagerly.
As I said those words I watched as Ezra walked back in the room. A look of annoyance was on her face. She marched over and smacked me over the top of the head.
"You idiot. You got mom turned into a human. You better find a way to fix this." She looked furious. I couldn't help but notice how much she looked like our mother when she was mad. It was almost hilarious.
"Ouch," I grumbled, rubbing the spot on my head that she had hit me. I guess I deserved at least that. "Calm down Ez, stress isn't good for the baby. You need to go home and rest."
She narrowed her eyes at me with a huff, before returning to our mother's side. She watched her with concern and fear.
I could understand how she was feeling. Now it seemed like anything could happen to her. She could age, get sick… she could die at any moment. The thought made me physically ill.
Bella wrapped an arm around Ezra, hugging her close. "Let's go home."
"Alright mom, just walk with me, I don't want you tripping and getting yourself hurt." Ezra said worriedly, as she walked our mother out of the doctor's office.
Edward exchanged looks with me and Alice. "If anything else happens call me. Try to keep Brady's body preserved for now. I'll return in the morning."
With that, Edward followed after my mother and sister. It was just Alice and I here.
Alice hopped into my arms, locking her legs around my waist. Her lips found mine instantly. I wrapped my arms around her waist, kissing her deeply. I could feel the heat bouncing between us. My worry was melting away quickly, my thoughts were all directed on Alice now.
I quickly walked us into an empty exam room and placed her on the bed. She didn't hesitate to pull her clothing off and toss it off to the side. Our lips stayed connected the whole time, even as I slid my pants down. I left a trail of kisses down her neck, then down to her chest and abdomen. I paused only for a second to move down and plant a kiss on her mound.
She responded with a quiet moan, she rested her head back as I slid my tongue into her moist folds. She tasted sweet, I couldn't hold back much longer.
As I moved away from her, I met her gaze with a look of hunger. "Are you sure?" I asked, a little out of breath.
She didn't respond, she only opened her legs completely and smiled up at me with tenderness. She wanted this. I made sure that I didn't do anything that Alice didn't want to do. But her opening up further to me, led me to believe that she was consenting.
Slowly I inched my member into her entrance. The feeling was pure bliss. Pleasure rolled down over my shoulders, making me shiver. I began pushing in and out slowly, which only seemed to drive the both of us crazy. So I bucked my hips against herself as hard and fast as I could manage. Alice's soft cries of pleasure filled the room. I marveled at the sounds that came off her lips, it only added to my arousal.
We made love for a long time, it felt like hours. But I knew that I had to get back to my duties. As much as I wanted to stay in this exam bed with my fiance, I couldn't make the mistake of getting distracted.
I glanced down at my wrist watch. It was nearly three in the morning. I only had a few more hours until Edward would return with the new doctor. I had to get busy, or I wouldn't hear the end of it.
"Would you like me to stay?" Alice asked, watching me get dressed. She stayed on the exam table, wrapped in one of the blankets that we always kept on the beds.
"It's completely up to you." I said with a smile, as I zipped the fly of my pants. "I would understand if you didn't want to hang around here any more than you have to."
She shrugged her shoulders. "I'd rather stay here and keep you company. Our house is so big and empty when you are gone. It's lonely." She admitted.
"Well in that case, stay as long as you wish." I said, leaning over and kissing her cheek before heading out of the exam room. If I stayed in there any longer with her naked, I would end up going back to where we left off.
I made my way back to Brady's room to assess the damage. First I drug Brady's body back to the exam table, then I retrieved his head, which had been on the other side of the room. The first thing I would do is stitch his head back on. Then collect as much of his blood as possible. There was something in his blood that caused vampires to become human. This would help tremendously with my mother's research.
I could hear Alice walking around the office, but attempted to just focus on Brady. It was a shame that Edward had to kill him. We could have learned so much from him.
It only took me a few minutes to completely reattach Brady's head. His skin was really hard to penetrate so it took more time than usual, but it looked to be holding now. Now I would be taking some blood from him. I decided to inject the needle in an artery, so I could empty him of his blood quicker.
Quietly I waited as the tube filled up with blood. I managed to collect five pints of blood, before something insane happened. I caught a glimpse of Brady's fingers twitching.
No, it had to be my imagination.
But to be safe I removed the needle and began taking his vitals. I listened to his heart for a full minute, I was just about to remove the stethoscope when I heard one strong beat. The sound made me jump in surprise.
Without a second thought I began chest compressions. His heart was attempting to function, maybe it just needed some help. I knew Brady had attacked my mother, but he was my patient, it's my job to do everything I can to save his life.
Within five minutes of chest compressions Brady began to move and breathe. He opened his eyes, only to offer me a sad expression.
"Please tell me Bella is still alive." That was the first thing Brady said.
"W-well yes she is." I said staring at Brady in shock. "I can't believe you are alive right now. How do you feel?"
"My neck is a little sore." Brady replied, but his expression stayed grim. "I'm so sorry for drinking her blood. It was just… the nicest smelling blood… I had to have it." He swallowed.
Alice popped into the doorway, a frown on her face. Brady and Alice's gaze met, but neither one of them made a move or said a word.
"Alice, it's not safe, you need to go back out to the main office." I said with a frown.
"No, she is okay to stay, her blood doesn't interest me." Brady said with a sigh. "I promise, I never meant to hurt anyone. I didn't want to hurt Bella. Can you please tell her how sorry I am."
Alice bounced over to the both of us, but caution remained on her face. "I'll pass along the message."
I didn't want Alice anywhere near Brady right now. If something was to happen… if he lost control again… I wouldn't be strong enough to stop him.
I decided to leave out the information that his bite had caused my mother to turn human. He didn't need to know about that just yet. There were still a lot of other factors here to determine. He clearly wasn't safe to return to the general public. But he couldn't stay here, we needed to put him somewhere that he can be watched all hours of the day and night.
"Can you tell me… as much information as you can… about yourself. Are you only interested in the blood of vampires?" I wondered.
"Well… yeah blood from a vampire… but also I can smell Jacob's blood from here. It's pleasant, but nothing compared to how Bella's blood smelled." Brady admitted.
"And how about my blood?" I asked with a raised brow.
Brady shrugged his shoulders. "No offense, but the smell of your blood just gives me a headache. It's repulsive."
This means that out of everyone, the half breeds would be considered safe around Brady. But anyone else would be a different story.
"There is another thing…" Brady said as a frown came to his face. "After drinking Bella's blood… it seems that it healed my body." He gestured down to the wound on his ankle.
I moved quickly to his ankle and unwrapped it. He was right. There was no longer a wound on his ankle, it appeared that nothing was ever there. It was fascinating.
"Incredible," I muttered, jotting down some further notes on the situation. "Would you consider yourself completely healed? Do you have your strength?"
Brady nodded. "Yeah, I feel like I could run a marathon. I don't think I need to be here in the doctor's office anymore."
"Unfortunately, we can't let you walk around town like this. Not yet. There is a lot that we don't know. And it's obvious that you aren't safe to be around just yet. You almost killed Bella." Alice said, folding her arms across her chest.
Brady sighed, rubbing the back of his head. "I understand what you're saying. But I need to get up and walk around for a bit. I can't stay here, there will be people coming here that actually need this exam room. I'm healed. So we are going to have to find a new place for me to stay."
He was right. He couldn't stay here. The best option would be if grandpa Charlie came and took him into custody. Not as a prisoner, but as a safe haven.
I looked to Alice. "Could you give my grandpa a call? While I take Brady for a walk."
Alice nodded, leaning up on her tiptoes to kiss my cheek, before dancing out of the room to make the call.
Brady slowly got off the exam table and stretched. A smile came to his face for the first time since I reattached his head. He and I walked together out of the room. We took a walk around the building, but I didn't permit him to go outside. There is no telling what would happen. If he chose to run, I wouldn't be able to catch him. Ribbonwood could only handle one monster on the loose and Victoria was enough.
"Are you still able to transform into a wolf?" I asked, watching Brady closely.
"I don't know, as much as I'd like to try I don't think that would be a good idea." He chuckled nervously. "If I lose control as a wolf… it could mean the deaths of a lot of people."
"Once you arrive in a secure area, we will continue to examine your capabilities. But for now, let's just take things slow." I offered.
"Sounds good to me, you won't hear me complaining, you did save my life. I owe you everything Darius. Thank you. And thank you for not being mad that I almost killed your mother."
"If it happens again there will be consequences." I warned.
"Understood," He nodded.
Brady and I stood in the main office now, this was as far as we were going to go. But the jingling of the door caused both of us to look towards the noise. Valerie entered the office, a bored look on her face.
She glanced between Brady and I with suspicion. "I'm here to see Jacob. Sorry, I missed the phone call. I had know idea he was here." Her tone sounded bleak and the lack of concern was evident.
"He is in exam room one," I said tensely watching Brady's reaction. Brady appeared to be calm, but his eyes seemed to linger on Valerie's neck.
Valerie nodded, taking note of Brady's gaze. She smirked at him, taking a few steps closer. "What's up Brady? See something you like?"
Brady snapped his head away from her, exhaling. "Jacob has been waiting for you. He is in a lot of pain. You should probably go see him." He responded, not looking in her direction.
Valerie snorted, narrowing her eyes at Brady, before walking past us and into Jacob's exam room. When she was a safe distance away Brady's body seemed to relax. He looked at me with embarrassment.
"It's not what it looks like," He muttered.
I raised a brow. "Are you… thirsty?"
Brady shook his head slowly. "A little, but not enough to do anything about it… it's just… Valerie and I hooked up a few times in the past… It was nothing against Jacob… I really didn't know it was her… she changed her appearance." He admitted.
This wasn't surprising to me. Valerie had slept with almost every man in Ribbonwood. She almost fooled me a few times, when she would appear to be Alice. But with Alice's abilities of seeing the future, I avoided being fooled, I was warned ahead of time before anything could happen.
"I'm actually not concerned with your sex life in the slightest, I just want to make sure that you don't… lose control." I said quietly.
Brady nodded with a serious look. "Just don't tell anyone about it. I've been seeing this girl, she is wonderful… kind… I imprinted on her… I can still feel that connection. I'd like to build up the courage to ask her to be my girlfriend."
"Who is the lucky lady?" I asked with a grin.
"She is human, a beautiful woman named Shay. She is incredible Darius. I can't wait to see her." Brady sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"Hopefully she will be able to visit you soon." I said, patting his shoulder. I understood how it felt to be so hopelessly in love. I couldn't imagine being forced away from Alice. I would do whatever it takes to return him to his love. But not until I was sure that he wouldn't be a threat to the town.
Alice came over to us now, leaning on my side with a cheerful smile. "Charlie is on his way with Demetri, they will be taking you to the jail, they have a cell set up for you."
Brady frowned. "You are locking me up, like some kind of prisoner?"
"No, nothing like that. It's a safe place for you to be until we determine if you are a threat to the town. You aren't a prisoner, think of it more as a… little vacation." I said with a nervous chuckle.
"It doesn't sound like a vacation to me." Brady grumbled, looking away from Alice and I both.
"Please understand, this is what is best for you and the town. It won't be forever." Alice spoke up.
"Fine… fine…" Brady said with a glare.
I could tell that he wasn't happy about this situation. I didn't blame him. I wouldn't want to be forced into a cell. Especially if I didn't do anything to deserve it. Brady had attacked my mother, he lost control, so technically he did break a law. This would count against him if my mother chooses to press charges. I knew that she wouldn't.
It was nearly forty five minutes until my grandpa arrived with Demetri. As soon as Demetri stepped through the door he was instantly in front of Brady. He winded his arm back before slinging a hard punch to Brady's face. The force of the impact sent Brady flying to the ground.
"Demetri, that's enough." Charlie growled at him, moving to Brady's side to help him to his feet.
Demetri was seething with anger, I haven't seen him this upset… since I was just a kid. He looked like he was barely in control over himself. His eyes were murderous, it sent a chill down my spine.
"That bastard is going to pay for what he did to Bella." Demetri hissed.
Brady winced, rubbing his face. "I'm sorry okay… I didn't mean to hurt her. I lost control." The regret was clear on his face as he looked between Charlie and Demetri.
Charlie cleared his throat. "We will talk more about that down at the jail, for now, come with me."
Brady and Charlie quickly walked past the rest of us and out the door of the office. Demetri stood back, looking at Alice and I.
"Is your mother alright?" He said, attempting to calm himself down. He roughly ran his hands through his hair.
"She is fine… just… kind of human now." I spoke up quietly.
Demetri's eyes widened. "So it's true, she really is human." This news only seemed to make him even more upset. "Brady will pay dearly for this." With Demetri's expression, I would be afraid to be Brady right now.
"Just keep your cool, we need Brady alive, if we want to turn Bella back we need to understand his abilities and their effects on others." Alice said, folding her arms across her chest. She eyed Demetri with a look of distaste. She never did like Demetri.
"Whatever," Demetri snipped before turning his back on us and walking towards the door. "I'll check back in with you later Dar, be safe." He muttered, before closing the door behind him.
"What a jerk." Alice sighed, shaking her head, before leaning into my side. "I'm glad you are nothing like him."
I wrapped an arm around her, pulling her closer to my side. "I will never become a person like Demetri. That's truly the only achievement I'm working towards. Not becoming Demetri."
