Callie woke to find the blonde lying next to her in a cold sweat, she'd seen that face filled with pain multiple times in the past. Arizona often had nightmares when she was worrying about something or feeling anxious, her ptsd was always worse when she was a little run down. Callie could usually tell what was bothering her before she woke up, whereas now she had no idea. She didn't know the effects of Arizona's fragmented memories and which part could be troubling her. When Arizona's body began to shake Callie knew she was coming out of her dream and son she would wake. "Hey, shhshh" Callie whispered in efforts to comfort Arizona pushing hair away from her sweaty face before cupping her cheek and rubbing away the silent tears that fell. Arizona wasn't sobbing like she usually would after a nightmare, she wasn't behaving like Arizona at all.
"I dreamt about you" she whispered, leaning into Callie's touch that felt so secure on her face. "We- we were, fighting-" she trailed off. "Do we fight a lot?" She asked. Callie was unsure on how to answer, they did fight, a lot. A long time ago and for the most part she regretted how much they fought.
"Not so much sweetheart" sweetheart? Fuck.
"That's good, because I love you Calliope" Arizona said as she went into a yawn.
"I know, now you need to go back to sleep and rest so we can get you home tomorrow" Callie didn't say 'I love you' back. It didn't feel right, she felt like she was lying to Arizona but it was for her own good. Arizona needs someone to be here for her right now, and she thinks that their marriage is fresh and stable, she doesn't need to know the finer details. Especially details that would crush her fragile soul.

It was Monday morning, Amelia had taken Arizona up for her psych assessment while Callie popped home to grab some things. She'd packed a bag of clothes for herself and a separate bag for Sofia. Meredith had said she could stay with her for a little while just to get Arizona back on her feet, Callie dropped off Sofia's clothes and then made her way to Arizona's house. Their house. The house they had bought together. It felt so familiar yet completely different. There were at least five empty wine bottles on Arizona's kitchen island. Her house was a mess, there were scrubs and clothes all over the place, the washing up hadn't been done in what seemed like weeks.
Callie made her way to Arizona's room, their old room. The curtains were closed, Callie almost tripped on a mountain of shoes Arizona had left on the floor. Callie pulled the curtains open as she breathed in the Arizona aroma that filled the room. She looked around unknowing of where to start in the familiar room, the best was unmade and she could still see the dip on where Arizona had been laying. She'd switched sides since Callie left and began sleeping on her side, Callie felt her heart sink but not as low as a few moments later when she saw a specific sweater on the floor. Callie sat on the bed and held the grey garment to her chest. "My sweater" she exclaimed, she had been looking for it for ages. Arizona had kept it, she'd worn it, whenever she missed Callie. It made her sad thinking that Arizona was missing her when really she had been the one who wanted the break. She remembered when Arizona left and started staying at the hospital the day after they broke up, Callie didn't want her to hurt but she was hurting. It wasn't long after that Callie moved out of the house and into Mark's apartment, she'd never got round to selling it, Arizona had moved back into their house. Callie then noticed the half smoked packet of cigarettes on Arizona's nightstand. "Oh Arizona" she sighed, she's had to get back to her soon and figure what the hell she was going to do, what she would say if Arizona asked anymore questions about them
She finished gathering some clothes for Arizona and made her way back to the hospital. Callie was in the elevator going up to Arizona's floor when a familiar female joined her. It was Penny, how dare she show up here, after the whole dinner party and everything that had been said.
"Hey, I erm I heard about Arizona" the redhead turned to make conversation.
"What are you doing here Penny, and Arizona is none of your concern" Callie regretted ever being with Penny, she had thrown herself in the deep end .
"I know, I'm not staying, I just wanted to see Miranda, I hope she makes you happy by the way" the words rolled off her tongue like a prepared speech as she glared over at Callie.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Callie questioned glaring straight back, the tension building between couldn't have been anymore suffocating.
"You were never over her Callie, I know it and you know it. You just used me to try and get over her but just know, when she hurts you again I'll be long gone. This is my floor, goodbye, Calliope" the elevator doors had already opened. Callie was stunned a little by what Penny had just said; she didn't come up with a reply in time before the elevator doors closed again and continued ascending.
Arizona was waiting in her room when Callie arrived with a bag of clothes. She looked Callie up and down before breaking a smile, "they said I'm okay to go home, but I can't come back to work until my memories come back" her eyes dulled a little, Arizona loved her job, how was Callie supposed to explain that she now has two specialities.
"That's great sweetheart, we'll just wait for Amelia to come back with your discharge letter" Callie smiled, the endearment had fallen out of her mouth before thinking but at this point she didn't really care. "I bought some clothes for you, do you need my help changing?" She asked knowing what Arizona went through before and how much she had struggled, but she smiled when Arizona shook her head no. The same stubborn blonde as always. Callie handed her the bag, but Arizona had already exhausted herself trying to remove her gown. "Here let me help you" Callie took a step closer untying the gown revealing Arizona's bare naked body. It felt so good, touching her again, feeling her soft skin under her fingertips.
Callie clasped Arizona's bra and pulled on some underwear and then helped her into some sweatpants and jumper, Calllie's jumper. Arizona smiled when she saw it, "you never let me wear your clothes" Arizona said, remembering an argument they had when she tried to borrow one of Callie's dresses. Callie was a little taken aback. "You-you remember that"
"Yeah" Arizona spoke slowly "I-I guess I do" they both smiled and turned their heads as Amelia had walked in.
"Good afternoon Callie, Arizona. I have signed your discharge papers and you're free to go, Callie can I just speak with you outside for a second" Amelia smiled holding the door open.
"Yes of course, finish getting ready and I'll grab a wheelchair from the corridor" she turned to Arizona and left with Amelia.
"Okay Callie, her psych assessment was good, however you need to be prepared like we talked about, she is recovering from a head injury, and worse memory loss. Arizona will start to remember but not all of them will be pretty. I expect her anxiety levels to be overly high, and I know she tries not to show it but even now she is suffering, it's like she has to relieve all those bad things that happened to her, her ptsd was bad before so now it could be extremely bad. Just know we are all here for you and her. I know this is hard for you too and I think your extraordinary for being the one to take care of her, especially after everything, but if it gets to much call me, call Meredith and we'll be there, I've prescribed her some medication for the pain, some anti anxiety medication to be taken when necessary and some sleeping tablets, a lot of memories may manifest as dreams, or even nightmares, the recovery is going to be hard" Amelia's words ran over Callie, her skin chilled the more she spoke, she couldn't not be here for Arizona, she loved Arizona. All her thoughts stopped, she loved Arizona.
"Thank you Amelia, for everything, I have to be the one to get her better, I want to fix us if I can" they both smiled and Amelia handed her the discharge paper and a bag of medication for Arizona.
Callie pulled the nearest wheelchair back to Arizona's room, Arizona was sitting on the edge of the bed looking like a child waiting to be picked up from school. "Let's get you home" Callie said before carefully lifting her wife, ex wife, from the bed and into the chair. Arizona winced at the pressure on her hips but it was over faster than it came. Home, Callie thought, Arizona won't even remember her home, but she couldn't stay in the hospital forever.
