Lizzie was doing her day-to-day jobs, washing, cleaning, just catching up on everything one morning when her phone rang, she had thought it might have been Bucky. She'd been thinking about him quite a bit over the past couple of days. However when she picked the phone up the withheld number made her doubt it was him. Against her better judgment she picked up the phone and answered. "Hello."

"Your boyfriend sure knows how to cause trouble." Said a familiar voice.

"Nick?"

"You need to go help those two deal with the fallout from all this."

Lizzie went quiet, how the hell was she meant to help them. This wasn't her world. She was a doctor, not an avenger.

"You still there?"

"I'm here. Nick I'm not an avenger, I have never done or trained for this kind of thing how am I meant to help? Isn't there someone else?" She was vaguely aware that she sounded like bleating lamb, but she didn't see how she could do anything.

"I know, but just go and be the reasonable one. Stop them from acting without thinking about what the rest of the world is seeing and thinking. There needs to be one sensible person there."

Lizzie sighed. Well he wasn't asking her to fight, that was something and she wasn't dumb she knew that the more trouble they coursed the easier they would be to find. "Ok, but how the hell am I getting to wherever it is, they are?"

"There's a car outside waiting for you. You best pack a bag."

"Hang on, how did you know I would agree to go?"

"You're a Rogers, that's what you do."

She laughed as she hung up the phone. She looked out the front window and saw the blacked-out car. She threw a few things into a bag and headed to the car.

…..

As she landed and got off the jet, she headed towards the car waiting for her. A blonde woman got out and walked towards her, Lizzie recognised her, it was her cousin Sharon. She gave her a hug.

"I knew he could get you here." Sharon stated, with a smile.

"You know Nick?"

"Of course, he was my boss. I made a call. Your boy is here causing trouble."

"How much did Nick tell you exactly?" Though Sharon was her cousin and did understand the kind of life Bucky and Sam lead she wasn't exactly close with the woman and wasn't sure that she liked her knowing too much about her and Bucky especially as they had only just become a couple.

They had chatted casually during the car journey and from the sounds of it Nick hadn't really said much at all which put Lizzie at ease a little. Sharon had told her that she would be staying with her and that she would be heading out pretty much straight away to find the troublemakers. "Just make yourself at home I won't be overly long."

Lizzie was settling into the room Sharon had shown her to. She had been pretty shocked when she had seen the size of the place and Sharon had just laughed and had told her she had been lucky and bought it before the area's prices went sky high. It had depressed Lizzie slightly when she realised that her home living room and kitchen could fit into the room, she'd be sleeping in.

She headed over to the window and looked out over the Cityscape her arms wrapping around her waist. She felt completely out of place here and the sooner all this was done with and she could go home the better. Sharon arrived back with Bucky, Sam and another man Lizzie didn't know around two hours later.

Bucky looked her up and down, then pulled her into a hug. "How are you here?"

"Well it's nice to see you too, soldier." Lizzie said with a smile as she looked up at him.

Bucky kissed and pulled her close again before letting her go and turning to the others who were trying to hide the fact they had been interested in their interaction.

"So who's the new guy?" Lizzie nodded towards Zemo.

She saw the looks between Bucky and Sam, clearly this was the reason Nick had sent her. Bucky and Sam started to speak together, clearly trying to agree on what to tell her and from the way their conversation was quickly escalating it was a rather long story, Sharon handed her a glass. There was amber liquid in it, a quick taste told her it was an exceptionally good whisky.

"Thought you might need this." She whispered over Lizzie's shoulder as she leant on the sofa back.

"The way those two are going I'm going to need more than one." She whispered back, over the rim of her glass.

Sharon smiled at her, Lizzie put her drink down and put all of her attention back to the two men.

"Enough, Jesus! You're acting like children." They had been arguing over who was going to explain Zemo to her and it was getting tiresome.

Both men looked at her then, the extra guy came over and introduced himself. "I'm Baron Zemo, it is a pleasure to meet you." He held his hand out to her and she shook it.

Afterwards she noticed the tension in Bucky's shoulders, what the hell was she missing? "So is anyone actually going to explain? And why the hell are you dressed like the Winter Soldier?" Asked Lizzie when she finally noticed Bucky's clothes.

Bucky rubbed the back of his neck looking a little sheepish and started to explain, Sam and Zemo filled in the gaps. Sharon handed her another whisky and she downed it in one. This really wasn't her world, power brokers, government agents, and everything going on with the red flag group. Super soldiers she could kinda deal with, she was brought up by one and was now dating another. She herself was enhanced by the serum.

Bucky took hold of her hand. "How are you feeling now you know it all?" he hadn't told her everything just enough to keep her up to speed.

"This isn't my world; you guys belong here. Nick sent me to try to talk sense into you."

Sharon handed her a bag then. "I have guests coming, you guys need to change, that should fit you. Boys there are clothes on that rack."

Lizzie left the room and changed into the dress Sharon had handed her. It was extremely short and barely covering her ass. The smooth cloth hugged her figure and was showing off her very ample breasts. As she opened the door, she saw Sharon had left her some heels to go with it, they were taller than she was used to, but fit well. As she walked into the room, she heard Sharon say something about stars and stripes.

"Nothing wrong with stars and stripes."

Bucky turned then, his jaw nearly hit the floor, she gave him a wink. He went over to her, while Sam was chatting to Sharon.

"You need to close your mouth Barnes. There's drool coming out."

Bucky pulled her close. "I'm so happy you're here."

"I'm happy to be here. I think."

He looked at her, he knew she didn't mean there with him. She meant the situation. "You don't have to fight. I know you don't want to be any part of this."

"I don't plan on fighting, well not unless I have too."

Bucky bent his head and kissed her; they followed the others downstairs. Lizzie laughed at Bucky's face when they entered the club like room, he looked completely lost, this was not his scene. She had done her fair bit of dancing at places like this. She took his hand and led him through the crowd, Bucky realised in that moment that he would follow her anywhere.

Sharon grabbed them all, she had a lead on the serum. As they got into the car, Sharon grabbed Lizzie by the arm. "Maybe you should stay here. It could get out of hand."

Lizzie wanted to laugh, Sharon may be family, but she hadn't been given the knowledge of Lizzie's abilities. "I'll be fine. I'm stronger than I look, and grandpa made sure I could handle myself."

Lizzie stayed outside with Sharon, while the boys went inside. Lizzie heard the gun fire before she saw anything. Someone grabbed her from behind and she threw them over her shoulder with ease, she punched him, and he was out cold. The training sessions were paying off. As she rounded the corner to find the others, things were really kicking off, neither of them could see Bucky and Sam.

Sharon watched as Lizzie threw these men round with ease and in that moment, she realised that Lizzie was like Steve and Bucky. Sharon disappeared to get the boys, there was an explosion as they came out, Lizzie moved so she was behind Bucky, who was arguing with Sam, she just rolled her eyes. Another blast brought her back to the situation they were in, how had she gone from being in a hospital to here?

…..

On the plane, Lizzie sat in silence looking out of the window, she wasn't really listening to the men. The whole idea of Power Brokers and serums still seemed like a difficult idea to get over. She was brought out of her thoughts when she overheard Sam say, "Maybe I shouldn't have put it in a museum, maybe I should have destroyed it."

She turned to face the men then, that was her grandfather's shield, and no one was destroying it anytime soon.

"Look, that shield means a lot of things, to alot of people including me. The world is upside, and we need a new Cap, it ain't gonna be Walker and before you take and destroy it, I'm gonna take it from him myself."

Lizzie smiled at Bucky's words, she was so angry with Sam and she wasn't going to just sit there and stew. "You have no right to destroy that shield. I asked you, when you first put it in there, if you were sure. You gave up the right to make decisions about it the moment you put it in there. I'm with Bucky, we need to take it from Walker."

Sam glared at her, she was really pissed at him, you could feel it coming off her in waves. "Look, Lizzie, Steve gave it to me. I have a responsibility to more than your family."

She leaned closer to him; her voice now oddly calm even as her eyes blazed with anger. "He thought of you as family, he thought you would be what would be needed, but instead…."

Bucky grabbed her arm and she rounded on him. "What?!"

"Just think about what you're about to say, somethings you can't take back."

Lizzie softened a little as Bucky pulled her into his lap. She leans her head against his shoulder and listens as Zemo changes subject.

….

They land in Riga, Latvia and follow Zemo, to what Lizzie presumes is one of Zemo's homes. She notices Bucky looking around, as if looking for something or someone. As they approach the building to go inside, he stops.

"I'm gonna go on a walk."

"Do you want me to come with you?"

"No go in, I won't be long."

He kissed her cheek and she noticed he seemed slightly distant. She went inside with Sam and Zemo. She sat down on one of the low sofas and waited for Bucky to return. When he came through the door, he noticed her sat by the stained-glass window. He made his way towards Sam,

"Well the Wakandans are here. They want Zemo. bought us some more time."

She listened to the rest of the conversation as she got up off the sofa and headed over to Bucky. She noticed his face change as he read something on his phone. She heard Sam say something about Zemo shooting someone and was really starting to wonder what the hell she had gotten herself into. How she wished right now to be back in the hospital doing something simple like changing bandages and not trying to keep these boys thinking straight.

"Sam." Bucky said in a low tone.

"What?"

"Karli bombed a GRC supply depot."

"What? What's the damage?"

"Eleven injured, three dead. They have a list of demands and are promising more attacks if those demands aren't met in full." She placed her hand on Bucky's arm, he turned at her touch, glad she was there.

Lizzie listens to Sam and Zemo's exchange. She was trying to take in as much information as possible, the mention of super soldiers and the serum made her face them again, Bucky puts his hands on the breakfast bar.

She was listening to Zemo explain his thoughts and feelings on the serum, this line brought her back into the game. "The desire to become superhuman cannot be separated from supremacist ideals. Anyone with that serum is inherently on that path."

Bucky moved then, his hand covering hers, knowing this will be hard for her to hear, he had the serum running through him and due to her relationship to Steve, so did she and like him she hadn't had the choice about having it, Hydra had injected him with it, and she had had it past on through blood.

"She will not stop. She will escalate until you kill her, or she kills you."

Sam moved in his seat slightly, Zemo did not know about Lizzie but after this he might. It was Bucky that spoke next.

"Maybe you're wrong, Zemo. The serum never corrupted Steve."

"Touché. But there has never been another Steve Rogers, has there?"

Both Sam and Bucky's eyes flicked to Lizzie then, and it didn't go unnoticed by Zemo. Lizzie squeezed Bucky's hand; she was now worried for both of them. She knew Bucky was a good man, and she thought herself to be a good person.

"What am I missing about her?" asked Zemo.

"Nothing!" Both Bucky and Sam said at the same time.

Lizzie smiled, they were both trying to protect her, but they were past that right now. "I'm Steve's granddaughter. The serum runs through me, just like it does Bucky and just like it did my grandfather."

Zemo stared at her. He'd never met anyone that had had the serum past on through blood before. "So maybe there is another Roger's after all."

Bucky moved away then, Lizzie turned to look out of the window, her mind going around with all the new information coming to light.

"Well, maybe we should give him to the Wakandans right now." Said Bucky.

"And you'll give up your tour guide?"

"Yes."

Bucky sat on the couch, Lizzie made her way to him and sat down next to him. He and Sam carried on chatting. She only half listened. She was thinking about the stories she had been told as a child, about how Steve had been given the serum, he was chosen because of his nature, more than anything. He had always been brave, honest, and loyal, but the reason he had been chosen were his words to the doctor about wanting to stop bullies. She had never thought about how the serum enhanced everything about you as a person. Was that what made her anger worse sometimes? Did it bring out the bad parts of her personality even more than normal?

Bucky squeezed her thigh to bring her out of her thoughts. "We've got to go somewhere; do you want to come with us?"

"Actually I think I'll stay here, or maybe go for a walk. All this is a lot to take in."

"Please don't let any of this worry you. I would never let anything happen to you." He said softly against her forehead.

"I know, and I would never let anything happen to you either."

Bucky kissed her softly and got up to go with Sam and Zemo. Lizzie watched him leave and, in that moment, she knew things were going to change.

….

Lizzie decided not to leave the apartment in the end and instead lay down on the sofa and tried to think about everything she had heard. She had messaged Sharon, to get more information on this Karli girl so she could see what they were up against. She wanted to meet this girl; Lizzie felt like her grandfather would have preferred to talk to her over fighting first. Maybe she could talk to her, maybe help in some way, give her time as a doctor if that was needed.

She was about to get up for a drink when the doors opened and all three men came in, looking glum. Bucky sat down next to her and laid his arm over her shoulders. Sam was saying how Karli might not be wrong and listening to him in some ways she agreed, but she also agreed with Bucky, her actions were not doing her any favours. It's at times like this she wished her grandfather were here to offer advice.

She watched as Bucky questioned Zemo, who was placing tea down in front of them. Bucky got up off the sofa and took the cup out of Zemo's hand, throwing it across the room, this was a side of Bucky she hadn't seen, was it wrong that it both made her worry and turned her on at the same time?

"You wanna see what someone can do with leverage?" Bucky growled.

Sam got up; he was trying to calm Bucky down. "Take it easy. Don't engage him. He's just gonna extort you and do that stupid head tilt thing."

Lizzie had to stifle her laugh. Sam made a call and Lizzie moved to go after Bucky. She placed her hand on his chest. She knew he hadn't been himself completely since she had arrived. "Hey, you, ok? I've never seen you like that before?"

"I'm sorry. He just rubs me up the wrong way."

"I get that. I'm just not sure that's a side of you I like seeing."

Bucky ran his hands down to her hips and pulled her to him. He hadn't meant to lose his temper in front of her. She didn't look scared of him, but more concerned for him. He wanted to know if that was really the case. "Are you scared of me?"

Lizzie shook her head. She could never be scared of him; she was so in love with him that he could trash this whole room and she still wouldn't be scared of him. "No Buck. What scares me is losing this you. I need you to remember who you are and what you stand for."

"I know, sometimes the line gets blurry." He admitted with a sigh.

"Hey, I get that. Right now, I've no idea what my life is gonna look like once I land back home. I don't know if I should go back to being plain old doctor Rogers or be something more, to help people."

"You being a doctor helps people. You have always known what you have wanted, you wanted to be you and live your life. What is making you change that?"

Before she could answer her phone beeps. It was Sharon, she had a location on Karli. Lizzie had asked her to find her. She wanted to talk to this girl, without all the superhero politics getting in the way.

"Everything ok?"

"Yer it's fine. I'm gonna go for that walk now. I'll be back soon. I promise." She gave him a kiss and left.

Bucky stared after her, he had a feeling she was doing something she probably shouldn't, but he wasn't going to stop her either. She always tried to do the right thing, for everyone, she was so like Steve in that respect.

….

Lizzie found herself in a graveyard. She spotted Karli with a guy, they were taking something out of a grave, it was a bag. What was in it, she had no idea.

"He made me believe that there are decent people in this world. I didn't think there could be another Captain America till I met you. You know, back then, there was just good and bad, but the world's more complicated now. People are lost. They need a leader that looks like them, who understands their pain. Someone who understands that today's heroes don't have the luxury of keeping their hands clean."

Lizzie listened as he spoke. He wasn't wrong, the world was so different now, but she didn't agree with them not being able to keep their hands clean. There was always a way. The guy had paused briefly and was now speaking again.

"What we're doing will outlive that legacy of that shield."

Karli spoke then. "That shield is a monument to a bygone era. A reminder of all the people history just left out. If anything, that shield should be destroyed."

Lizzie was starting to get mad with people wanting to destroy something that meant so much to her. She stepped out then, this was either crazy or brilliant, she hadn't decided which. "Are you Karli?"

The girl spun round then, she was younger than Lizzie had expected, younger than her by a few years. She held her hands up. "I haven't come to fight. I just wanted to talk."

"Who are you?"

Lizzie took a few steps closer. "My name is Elizabeth Rogers. I believe you know my grandfather." Both of them looked at her then, they clearly thought she was here for something. "Look, I've not been sent here by anyone, I'm not here to arrest you or well do anything. I'm a doctor. I overheard you talking about my grandfather's shield. I have to say I disagree with it being a symbol of a bygone era."

"And why is that?"

Lizzie moved even closer then. "It's always been a symbol of hope. My grandfather was a symbol of hope. He only ever wanted to stand up to the bullies, he never wanted to hurt anyone or kill anyone. He just wanted a better world for everyone. That shield is just in the wrong hands right now, being used by someone that doesn't understand the meaning of it."

Karli studied the woman, stood in front of her.

"Did you ever wonder why, out of all the weapons he could have had, that Captain America picked a shield?" Both of them shook their heads. "Because he could use it to shield others. It was never meant to be seen as a weapon. My biggest regret is allowing that idiot to carry on wearing it. It belongs to someone else."

Karli stepped to her then, and Lizzie held her ground, she was not scared of these people. "We have somewhere to be. But I hope we can talk again sometime."

"So do I. I like you; I have people I want to protect too." Lizzie watched them leave and then made her way back to the house and to Bucky. She had come to realise that wherever he was, was her home, he was her home.

…..

As she arrived back at the building, the three men were heading out of the door. "Where are you going?" she asked, grabbing Bucky's arm.

"Just follow us." said Bucky.

As they rounded the corner John and Lemur were coming towards them. "Karli Morgenthau is too dangerous for you guys to be pulling this shit." Walker snapped.

"Well if it isn't G. ." Lizzie stated, with a laughing ring in her tone.

"Ah! How'd you find us now?" said Bucky with a roll of his eyes.

"Come on. You think two Avengers can walk around Latvia without drawing attention?" said Lemur

"No more keeping us in the dark. You could start by telling us why you broke him out of prison."

Lizzie looked from Walker to Bucky, so that's what Nick meant by him doing something stupid.

"He did that himself, technically." Bucky shrugged.

"This better be an unbelievable explanation…" Walker began to raise his voice.

"Hey, take it easy before it gets weird."

Lizzie was looking between the 5 men now. She was still trying to catch up on everything she was hearing. She was missing a lot of information about who Zemo was. The man himself spoke then.

"I know where Karli is." He moves off and they make to go with him, but Walker stops him with a hand on his chest, she really wanted to smack him in the face, he was being such a dick.

"Well, where?"

"All we know is, it's a memorial. So, we're gonna intercept her there."

Lizzie listened to the men as they talked. Walker was starting to really get on her nerves, she was really trying to keep calm. She liked his friend, he actually spoke some sense and agreed that maybe talking to Karli first, might be better than going in all guns blazing. She hadn't mentioned she had spoken to Karli. She was going to, but she didn't want Walker to know, and she wasn't sure how the others would react.

They followed a little girl to what seemed like an old distillery, she pointed through a door, Karli was in there. Sam moved to go through, and Walker grabbed Zemo and cuffed him.

"Hey, you got 10 minutes, then we're doing things my way." Walker shouted after Sam.

Sam disappeared through the door; Lizzie looked from Bucky to Lemur. She leant against one of the stills and watched the integration between the men. Walker paced for a bit before sitting down and staring at the shield, Bucky was lent against the door frame that Sam had gone through. She wanted to move nearer Bucky, but it felt wrong somehow to show that sort of affection while they were here. He needed to be on his A game in case anything happened, and she still had no idea what her job was here. Talking sense into these guys seemed like a task even too big for her, she also wasn't sure there was any talking sense into John either.

It wasn't long before John was up and pacing again, Jesus, the man needed to learn to chill out, he kept trying to look round Bucky. Lizzie notices Bucky was keeping his eyes towards the floor. Clearly, he didn't think much of John's behaviour either, she noticed his eyes flick to him quickly as he moved away.

Not five minutes later things started to escalate then, John wasn't going to wait. He marched towards Bucky, who stopped him with a rise of his hand. John glared up at Bucky. Lizzie pulled herself off the still, she was ready to kick his ass again if she had too.

"This is all really easy for you, isn't it? All that serum running through your veins." His eyes flicked to Lizzie, he knew she had moved and was ready to fight if he pushed too hard.

Lizzie realised in that moment; Walker seemed jealous of Bucky.

"Barnes, your partner needs backup in there." He lent slightly to look round Bucky. He was trying to provoke him into rushing in to find Sam. "Do you really want his blood on your hands?"

Bucky looked the man up and down. Lizzie knew what he was doing. He was trying to gage the worthless man standing in front of him.

Walker pushed Bucky out the way. Knowing he was about to do something stupid they quickly followed after him. Lemur tried to keep a close eye on Bucky and Lizzie trying hard to stop everyone from losing their cool.

When they reached Sam Karli spotted them and ran. Lizzie had heard her last words to Sam, she felt he had betrayed her in some way. Bucky was straight after her and Lizzie followed. She was as fast as Bucky, but he had years at this, she watched him jump onto and off of things and knew she wasn't quite ready for that. They lost Karli in the maze of rooms but found Sam. They heard gunshots and ran towards them. When they finally found the right room, Zemo was out cold on the floor and Walker was just standing there.

"What did we miss?" asked Sam.

Bucky turned to Lizzie, he could tell by her face, she was worried, confused and also looked down right pissed off, with the whole thing. He reached his hand out towards her, but she didn't take it and instead took a slight step back. Was she mad at him? Maybe she should have stayed with Sharon, that way she could have gone back home if she'd wanted. But this wasn't the right place for this conversation.

Lizzie wasn't sure why she had stepped back from Bucky, this was all just so much to take in. She wasn't sure where she fit into all this. Nick had asked her to be the reasonable voice behind their actions and so far, she wasn't doing a great job at it. She didn't feel mad at Bucky, more like upset with herself. She felt like she was letting people down, but she didn't know why.

As they walked back to the house, she felt Bucky's hand slip into hers. He was trying to get her to open up, but right now she didn't know what to say. She just gave him a quick smile and they walked in silence.
