~Chapter 6~
The next day Fate met up with Nanoha again on the beach, she was slightly annoyed since her two former soldiers had arrived two hours before dawn. She'd been ready to skin them alive for showing up so damn early, but at least she was the only one distrubed by their arrival. Spamming her phone until she got up to open the door to commit murder. They at least had the decency to not follow her, instead choosing to crash in the spare bedroom until a more reasonable hour. Of course she knew if she stayed out too long the pair would eventually hunt her down so that meant cutting her time with Nanoha short. She didn't want the idiot pair harassing her friend, or ogling her in her bodysuit.
Picking her way down to the beach she noticed Nanoha dressed in her street clothes sitting on the sand. The slump to her shoulders and the fact that she wasn't in the water worried Fate.
Maneuvering so she could sit beside her friend, she asked, "You okay?"
Looking over at the blonde Nanoha shrugged, then turned back to the ocean. Like Fate had experienced after the storm, last night Nanoha had a nightmare and the lingering effects made it impossible for her to get into the water that morning. Nearly drowning while being impaled tended to leave a lasting impression on a person. She knew the fear was irrational and that she wasn't likely to ever be in such a situation again, yet she was paralysed by emotion.
Fate had no idea what was wrong but recognized the signs of emotional stress. Shifting her position she snuggled up behind the younger woman and wrapped her in a hug. Pulling her back into her body as she hummed a soothing tune. When Nanoha turned in her arms and clung to her as she cried she just held her and tried to be as supportive as possible. Rocking her as she rubbed her back whispering, "It will be alright. Let it all out. I'm here, I've got you."
After a few minutes Nanoha got a hold of herself but found she was too comfortable to move. It was embarrassing to show this weakness but she knew Fate wouldn't hold it against her. When the sound of the blonde's stomach rumbling reached her ears she couldn't help giggling.
Giving Nanoha a poke to her side Fate mock grumbled, "Nice to see you feeling better. Since we don't seem to be swimming today why don't we go find some food."
Sitting up with a squeak Nanoha stuck her tongue at the blonde before saying, "If you're really hungry we can go to the cafe."
Brow wrinkling Fate asked, "Won't I just get in the way?"
Chewing her lip Nanoha reconsidered her offer, it was likely Miyuki would shanghai her and then her time with Fate really would be cut short. Then she smiled, "Why not come to my house instead. I can cook for us there."
Unsure of this Fate said, "I don't want to impose. We can go eat at a different cafe, I'll pay."
Shaking her head, Nanoha said, "No, I want to thank you for being..."
Fate covered her mouth and said, "You don't owe me anything. Especially not for being a friend, you comforted me when I felt like hell. Being here for you when you need someone to lean on makes me happy."
Pulling Fate's hand away Nanoha held it in her lap as she tried to find the right words. Crying had helped ease the tightness in her chest but she could still feel the lingering fear from her dream. Then she felt Fate pat her head as she said, "You don't have to hold it in. Nothing you could tell me would make me think less of you."
Shifting so she was leaning against Fate again Nanoha hid her burning face, "I had a nightmare. It was the day I nearly died. I was trapped underwater, there was so much pain. I couldn't see anything because of the blood, everything was red."
Holding the woman tight Fate rubbed her back, "Those kinds of nightmares are the worst, remembering the hurt and the panic, feeling helpless. But remember, you survived and have so much more living to do. Living in fear, that's not something my Nanoha would ever do."
Clutching at Fate's arm Nanoha admitted, "I'm scared to get into the water."
Kissing her forehead the blonde replied, "Right now, after having to relive that nightmare that is completely understandable. But tomorrow, with a bit of distance from it, I know you'll get back into the water. It's part of you."
This was true, and now she had Fate to help ease her back into the ocean. Swimming could wait a day, for now she would relish the comfort she was receiving.
Sighing Nanoha sat back up, "You're right, tomorrow things will look a lot different. For now though, how about we go get something to eat."
Fate sensed now would be a good time to tease her friend a little and help further ease her tension. With a playful smirk she said, "I can't wait to taste test your abilities. You keep saying you are a superior cook, it's time you put your money where your mouth is."
Giving Fate a poke Nanoha said, "You will learn never to question my word."
Laughing at this she nodded, "Alright, big words. Let's get going."
Fate walked holding hands with Nanoha back to her home, she could still sense a little disquiet in the younger woman and wanted her to know she wasn't alone. Entering the modest house she said aloud, "Pardon the intrusion."
Smiling at the polite behavior Nanoha reassured her friend, "It is just the two of us. So please make yourself at home."
The blonde was tempted to tease her friend further by doing something outrageous but decided it wouldn't be safe to do anything dumb when her family might return at any moment. Instead she quietly followed the auburn haired woman to the kitchen. Sitting out of the way she watched as Nanoha cooked for them. The cute apron and the easy way she moved made it seem like a dream, one where Nanoha was her wife. Turning away she laid her head down on her folded arms and tried desperately not to think stupid thoughts.
Tired from having been awakened at three in the morning when her friends had arrived she soon fell back to sleep. Twenty minutes later she was gently shaken awake and had a plate of food set before her. Stretching she yawned, "It looks wonderful."
Eating the omelette and toast she made little happy noises which had Nanoha grinning. Finishing their meal Fate sighed as she looked at her watch, "I hate to leave so soon. But the idiots showed up before dawn and will likely begin their search for me if I don't go home."
Nanoha's smile faded at the thought of Fate spending time with these two men. She understood there was no danger of her falling in love with one of them, Fate's preferences were well established, but it was still annoying.
Chewing her lip she asked, "What will you three be doing today?"
The blonde shrugged, "Heaven knows, those fools will likely want me to take them on a tour."
Not wanting to be pushy but also desperate to extend their time together Nanoha offered, "I could help with that. Take them to the hot spots for tourists to keep them entertained."
There was a tug of war inside Fate, she wanted to spend more with Nanoha but didn't want her near the men. Nanoha could see how unsure Fate was that she had to ask, "What is it?"
Eyes shifting back and forth with panic, Fate knew she couldn't lie, "I don't want them to steal you away from me."
Snorting at the answer Nanoha gave the blonde a poke to the cheek, "I'm pretty sure I told you I'm not interested in men."
Fate felt her mouth go dry, what did that mean? The hamster wheel in her head was at a dead stop as the poor little bugger had fainted from over stimulation. Did she really just say she likes women? Okay… maybe that was true but that didn't mean she'd be Nanoha's type. Her luck was never that good.
Just then her phone rang and she had to grab it, fumbling it around she answered with a croak, "Hello?"
There was a gruff voice that growled menacingly, "FATE T HARLAOWN YOU WILL COME HOME IMMEDIATELY!"
Wincing at the words her frown turned into a smirk as she surmised what must be going on. Her brother was having to deal with the duo and they had driven him mad in less than, she checked the clock, two hours. Well done boys, a new record.
With a teasing purr to her voice she said, "Awww Onii-chan, I thought you'd appreciate a little male bonding time. It's gotta be rough living in a house full of women."
There was a sputtering noise then her mother's voice came on the line, "Fate love, please come home soon. Your brother is at his wits end."
Fate couldn't help snarking, "That didn't take long."
Lindy's voice took on a more cool tone, "These are your guests, it is time you came home to do your duty as their hostess."
Whining in her throat Fate said, "But I didn't invite them. They just showed up like a pair of stray dogs looking for food."
There was a very pointed silence and Fate sighed, "Fine. I'm coming home."
In a brighter tone Lindy said, "Bring Nanoha over with you, she can help you keep the boys in line."
Conflicted Fate felt her eye twitch, "I don't need help managing those idiots."
The teasing lilt to her mom's voice made it clear she wasn't going to win, "Maybe not, but she should at least ensure the three of you don't get into trouble. She's such a lovely level headed girl."
Eyes flickering over to the young woman, Fate finally conceded, "Quite. We'll be over in a few minutes. Just need to clean up."
The smile Nanoha wore when she realized she was now invited over was breathtaking. It also made Fate feel slightly guilty, Nanoha deserved to be spoiled today after that terrible nightmare. She'd have to do her best to balance out her attention and include her in conversation.
The meeting of Nanoha and her former soldiers was very amusing. Both parties wanted to put forward a good first impression. Especially the two men, having been warned strenuously by Lindy that if they ruined things for her daughter she would skin them alive and cover them in salt before really making them hurt. Vice and Verossa held no doubts the matriarch would follow through on her threats, Fate had to have learned her colorful ways of tormenting people from somewhere.
Once the introductions were completed Fate decided it would be best to take the men out so they couldn't trap Nanoha in a conversation that she was sure would turn embarrassing. As they made their way down to the beach again the guys were happy to let the women lounge on the sand while they played in the ocean and flirted with passing bikini clad babes. Fate was glad they weren't focusing their attention on the beautiful auburn haired woman but did find their behavior in general pretty loutish.
Resting her head on Fate's shoulder Nanoha asked, "How in the world did you become friends with those guys?"
Grinning as they watched them get shot down by another pair of ladies Fate said, "It took awhile but deep deep deep deeeeeep down they are pretty good guys. I'd trust them with my life, though probably not with my wallet. Especially if we are at a bar or club. They drink like fish and are always trying to bum drinks off me."
Sitting up properly Nanoha frowned at the sand as she played with it, "Do you like going out to those places?"
Not liking the fact that Nanoha wasn't cuddling up to her Fate studied her closely before realizing why she had pulled away. Being honest she said, "Going out like that was part of the life I lived before, it was how we bonded as brothers-in arms. I was usually the only woman in the group and as a lesbian they sorta just considered me just another one of the guys."
Hearing this Nanoha began to wonder things that she knew were none of her business and she bit her cheek to keep back the unnecessary question. Fate could see the tension and didn't like it, she didn't want the woman to hold back with her.
Nudging her Fate asked gently, "Was there something else?"
Feeling sick with herself for bringing up the topic but unable to hold back, Nanoha had to ask, "Is that how you met your ex?"
Jaw tightening Fate really didn't want to think about the past but she could see this was a topic Nanoha was serious about. Shifting so she was now holding her knees she answered, "I met a few women like that, rarely did it ever become something more. My ex, I met her at a Family Readiness Group event, we were about to deploy overseas and we got to talking. Her brother was in a different unit but was shipping out at the same time. We mostly emailed and chatted during that year as friends, when I got back she was single and one thing led to another. I thought her being from a military family meant she understood what kind of life we would have together."
Gripping the sand in her fist Nanoha knew she was being dumb, "Sorry. I shouldn't have asked."
Turning to look at her friend Fate said, "It's fine. Talking about it doesn't hurt as much as it used to, maybe it is true, time heals all wounds. Or maybe I've come to realize she wasn't the right one for me. Her cheating hurt like hell but it saved me from making the biggest mistake of my life."
Already hating herself for asking such callow questions Nanoha bit her tongue to try and refrain from asking something completely impertinent. Seeing the struggle Fate smiled at how much the curious kitten was trying to hold back. True she didn't want to think about the woman again but the ache that had been killing her just a few short months ago had dissipated like fog in the morning sun.
Patting the head of her personal sunbeam she urged, "It's fine. You can ask me anything."
Unable to meet burgundy eyes Nanoha mumbled out, "Would you take her back?"
Eyebrows rose at this and Fate laughed, "Christ! No! I might be disfigured and half crippled but I'm not completely desperate."
Glaring at the blonde Nanoha bit back, "You're not disfigured! And you are perfectly able just as you are."
Touched by this Fate smiled, "Thanks. But that doesn't change the fact that I still wouldn't take her back. I'd rather be single than tie myself to someone I can't trust."
Nodding her acceptance of this Nanoha said, "When we first met… It felt like you still had feelings for…"
Rolling her neck to relax the tension in it Fate admitted, "I did have some feelings, mostly anger but there was a small bit of regret. Like if I hadn't been so, so broken maybe things would have worked out."
Clawing at the sand under her fingers Nanoha growled, "You're not broken, and she was a damn fool for cheating. I can't believe anyone could be that stupid."
Taking the sand stained hand Fate rubbed at the discolored fingertips, "Maybe it was destiny, without all that prior ugliness I wouldn't be here now. And meeting you is well worth living through all that nonsense."
Pulling her hand loose Nanoha stood up trying and failing to hide her burning face, in a low voice she said, "Baka, Fate-chan is such an idiot," then she took a calming breath, "I'm going to get us some drinks. I'll be right back." Escape was necessary if she wasn't going to do something completely stupid, like try to kiss the woman.
Watching her pick through the crowds Fate contemplated her life. It was true, meeting Nanoha was well worth all the prior hurt and anguish in her life. Right now, with the younger woman she felt happier and more complete than she had at any other point in her life. There was no way she'd be able to leave at the end of the summer. It was time to reconsider what her future plans were, being a glorified babysitter for her niece and nephew no longer seemed as appealing.
While she was wool gathering the two men snuck up on her. Having borrowed a child's bucket they dumped ocean water over her head. Shocked by the prank Fate stared up at the idiots as wild visions of revenge flashed before her mind's eye. Hoisting herself up she limped towards the pair.
Laughing nervously they backed away, "Haha, uh Major… calm down, you don't want to hurt yourself."
After weeks of swimming with Nanoha her legs were much stronger. She might not be able to run but standing and walking without her cane were now easy. Whipping off her soaked top revealed she was wearing her bodysuit under her street clothing.
Growling as she kicked off her baggy shorts and sandals she said, "You want to play with water huh? Well then, let's PLAY!"
Chasing them towards the waves Fate was able to catch the back of Vice's swim trunks. The man refused to go down alone and caught his friend, flinging him backwards tripping them all. Luckily they were already ankle deep in the water and the coming wave helped break their fall.
Sputtering Fate spat out, "I hate you both."
Verossa grinned evilly and splashed the blonde before diving for deeper water. The three were in the middle of a war when Nanoha returned and the sight of her friend playing with the two men made her chest ache. There was a carefree smile and easy camaraderie that she hadn't seen before, causing the idea that she wasn't the one closest to Fate to rear its ugly head.
Memories of her first year at university came back to her. Of her tentative attempts at making friends failing over and over as the other person found others more interesting or less annoying. It was inevitable, Fate wouldn't choose her when her real friends were available.
Dropping the drinks on the towel Nanoha decided it would be best if she left the group to themselves. There was no reason to say goodbye, they had completely forgotten she was with them. She was about halfway to the stairs back to the boardwalk when she was captured in a very wet hug. Squeaking in dismay she turned to see a smirking Fate had caught hold of her.
Her bangs were plastered to her forehead and it was clear she hadn't stopped to dry off before chasing after her. Burgundy eyes studied her before she spoke in a mock teasing voice which hid her own hurt at being abandoned, "You didn't think you could escape so easily did you? You promised to help protect me from those idiots, remember."
Heartbeat now rocketing Nanoha felt confused, why had Fate stopped her? When had she even noticed? How could it feel so damn good to be held by the soaked blonde?
Needing some distance to get her mind working Nanoha pulled away, "Y'all seemed to be having fun without me."
Holding tightly to Nanoha's hand Fate said, "They ganged up on me when you left. Obviously you can't leave me defenseless. Two against one isn't great odds."
Fate was giving her puppy eyes again with a slight pleading pout which had to be criminal levels cute. Slightly amused by this Nanoha poked Fate's arm and sassed back, "Maybe not, for them. We both know you could run rings around them."
Tugging gently towards their little base camp Fate said, "A year ago I would have agreed with you. Right now, I could really use my best friend to even the odds."
The thrill of being called Fate's best friend warred with her fear of future rejection. Frowning with worry Nanoha asked, "Are you sure? I don't want to intrude."
Entwining their fingers Fate led her back to where the men were now sitting, "The only reason I didn't want you meeting them was because I'm a greedy brat when it comes to you. It would drive me mad if those morons started hitting on you."
Smiling at the possessiveness, maybe it was wrong but she wanted Fate to be greedy. She couldn't stand it if she was replaced in the blonde's life. Suppressing a laugh Nanoha said, "I doubt they would be interested in someone like me."
Speaking softly in hopes of not being heard Fate admitted, "Only because I threatened to castrate them."
Before Nanoha could reply to this Vice called out, "Hey Major! We're hungry! Feed us!"
Rolling her eyes the blonde sighed, "Christ almighty, what am I? Their mother?"
Suggesting a local beach bar that served food and didn't mind its patrons coming in wet or sandy to the trio it was decided to trek further down the seashore to the little shack. The men had immediately agreed and pleaded they go at once since they were starving. Fate had rolled her eyes at their antics, she knew they had a huge breakfast courtesy of her mom. Damn black holes on legs were always hungry.
Entering the little shack Fate could see more than a few people glare at Nanoha. Wrapping an arm around her she led them to a table, her glower daring anyone to comment. The men not as familiar with the situation felt a bit awkward then Verossa being the one quicker on the uptake decided to just cause a distraction by acting like a goofball. Vice, seeing the behavior went along with it especially when it came to flirting with the waitresses.
Fate could appreciate the fact that they were helping in their own way. But she still wanted to smack them around the head. Taking a seat Fate kept Nanoha close which had the men giving each other sly looks. Who was the Major fooling?
Leaning back in his chair Vice asked, "So Nanoha-san how did you end up friends with the Major? She's such a grump I wouldn't think a cutie like you would want to deal with her."
Suddenly Vice completely flipped over and landed on his back. Groaning he saw his best friend laughing at him. Verossa gave him a hand up as he snickered, "You really are an idiot. You should know better by now."
Sitting back up, Vice could see Fate was now rubbing her forearm and had a very stoney look. Gulping he said, "Haha you know the Major is great. Top notch."
Nanoha saw the gesture and gave the blonde a nudge, "Be nice."
Hunching up a little Fate whined, "He started it."
Raising an eyebrow at this, Nanoha said, "And here I thought Fate-chan was mature."
Verossa snickered at this, "The Major is a big kid at heart. If she wasn't, she wouldn't be able to stand us. She's our big sister, protective and caring while being a teasing bully."
Seeing Fate was now blushing, Vice leaned his scarred arm in front of him so Nanoha could see the damage that had been done many years before, "And like all families, we've hurt each other and grown from it. We don't hold on to past resentments, if we did then we'd have missed out on a life changing relationship. I wouldn't give up Fate for anything, she's the sister of my heart."
Grumbling now with embarrassment Fate said, "Yeah, yeah, I love you guys too. Now can we decide what we are eating."
Hiding behind the menu Fate focused on the words without reading them. Nanoha understood what it was like to have an older brother but being the youngest she had never had the chance to be the one to tease or comfort like this. Watching the trio she could understand how they fit together as a family, having been adopted Fate had built a family from nothing but love and respect which seemed just as firm a foundation as blood. The warmth between them eased some of her concern for the woman, even when they went their separate ways Fate wouldn't be alone.
When the waitress returned they all ordered and Fate's burgundy eyes bore holes in the woman as she took down Nanoha's choice. If she suspected even the slightest unprofessionalism she was going to… she let out a sigh, Nanoha would not want her to make a scene. Maybe she should have insisted on them going back to her house for lunch? It seemed like all she did was make things more difficult for the younger woman.
Seeing the frown Nanoha took Fate's hand, "It will be fine. The owner is friends with my mom, the wait staff might not like me but they know better than to be rude."
Dark broody eyes took in the positivity on display and couldn't understand how Nanoha could be so accepting of all this. She deserved so much more than to be the object of ridicule, if only she could steal her away from this stupid town. But Fate already knew that wouldn't make the young woman happy, she loved this place and the ocean. It would be like taking a siren out of the water, she'd eventually lose her lustrous smile and wither away.
Their food arrived along with the owner, the elderly man seemed to have a soft spot for Nanoha. He patted her head as he eyed the two young men, "I hope these gentlemen are being respectful. I heard a bit of a commotion earlier."
Nanoha leaned into Fate as she said, "They are behaving, my friend Fate-chan has them in hand."
Watery eyes turned onto the blonde and he studied her closely, especially the way Nanoha was holding onto her hand. With an amused smile he said, "Mmmhmm, she looks like a steady girl."
Bowing her head at the older man Fate introduced herself and his interest grew, "Oh, so you are the Harlaown girl. It doesn't surprise me that you ended up being towed around by this child, your mother used to come here with Momoko all the time. They claimed to be working on student council projects but there was an awful lot of giggling."
Fate tried to picture it, and failed. Her mom wasn't overly strict or serious but she rarely giggled. She was pretty happy from what she could see but there was a definite lack of inspiration to make such a noise. She wondered if Momoko had managed to make her laugh last night at the festival, or if maybe she'd hear it tonight at dinner. Having Nanoha in her life made her realize how important such a thing was, laughter over the silliest things had eased a lot of her anxiety.
Nanoha blushed as she complained, "You make it sound like mama and I are pushy."
Laughing at this the man poked Nanoha's cheek, "If I remember correctly your family motto is, Full Power, Full Throttle. Even your grandmother embodied that sentiment."
Verossa couldn't help himself, "If she plans to keep up with the Major she will need that kind of mindset."
Beside him Vice nodded, "Yes sir, the Major has always run circles around people. I've yet to see her bested by anyone or anything."
The man smirked at this and said, "I predict the youngest Harlaown has met her match. Nanoha comes from a long line of women who have always gotten what they want."
The green haired man considered this before commenting, "What happens when an immovable object meets an unstoppable force?"
Grumbling Fate said, "I'm not immovable, you of all people know how easy going I can be."
Snorting Verossa sassed back, "Only when the topic at hand isn't important to you. Otherwise you turn into an obsessive manic. I still have blisters from when you wanted to go mountain climbing when we were stationed in Afghanistan. Christ you were relentless, not even the sherpas with us could stop you from…"
He trailed off as he thought about his friend's current condition. Nanoha on the other hand didn't seem to think Fate's injuries should stop her from enjoying life.
Squeezing the blonde's hand, Nanoha said, "We should go hiking, if we take the train we could make it a day trip."
Fate looked at her friend as if she was crazy, "It wouldn't be much fun, we would have to stop a lot because of my foot."
Giving Fate a dry look Nanoha countered this, "We can pack lunch and plenty of snacks. It doesn't matter if we get to the top or not, getting to hang out together is all that matters. Besides you need more fresh air and sunshine, we've got to get more color in your cheeks before the summer ends."
This was something she missed doing, she couldn't do it alone and she wouldn't drag the guys with her since she didn't want their sympathy. But going with Nanoha sounded like fun, rubbing her thumb over Nanoha's knuckles, she finally agreed, "We will have to decide on a good day when the weather isn't too hot."
Verossa was surprised by Fate's readiness to accept Nanoha's compassion. Then again if a pretty girl was going to feed her snacks and probably fuss over her then he could understand why Fate was willing to leave her pride at home. For a woman half as attractive he'd be willing to suffer more indignities than that.
Not knowing how to read the mood Vice immediately cut in, "So when do we wanna go?"
Fate glared at her friend and said, "You're not invited."
Shoulders slumping he pouted, "Awwww, but I want tasty snacks too!"
In a dead level tone Fate offered, "I'll buy you a box of Milk Bones."
Nanoha gave her another poke to the side, "Fate-Chan!"
While she wasn't excited over the idea of the men tagging along she could see this being a good opportunity to get to know them even better and maybe milk out more details about Fate's previous life. Smiling graciously she said, "If the guys want to come with us they can. What's the saying, the more the merrier?"
The old man laughed at this, "Harlaown-san is just like her mother, I remember Lindy had a dry wit that could cut diamonds. Of course she never tried to use it on Momoko, pretty sure she knew better and wanted to keep all her teeth in her mouth."
Confused by this Nanoha asked, "You sound like you are confusing my mother with me. Mama isn't violent."
Chuckling he said, "Hmmm maybe, maybe not, but she is terrifying." He gave her another poke to the cheek before ordering, "Eat your food before it gets cold."
Nanoha pouted which made him smile warmly and shake his head, "Give your mother my regards when you see her. I have to get back to work before the baby devil gets too riled up."
Huffing in her seat, sapphire eyes glared at the older man, "Leave it to gramps to embarrass me."
Verossa smirked, "I don't know, that nickname is very appropriate, fitting even, especially since you are friends with the Major. She was called the Black Angel by Special Forces, she used to scare the shit out of folks by attacking from the shadows. The last thing you saw before passing out from a choke hold was her face. Angelic beauty mixed with asphyxia left a few with some strange delusions."
Fate glared at Verossa and said, "If you want to see angels I can arrange that for you."
Waving off the threat he continued, "You ought to be very careful around her Nanoha-san, her speciality is binds. Once she has someone pinned there is no escape."
The faint blush warmed Nanoha's cheeks which she covered up by taking a drink. Unfortunately Vice just made things worse, "Yeah, you have to be careful when wrestling with her, she likes to leave marks."
Nearly choking Nanoha ended up spitting up her drink. The mess spilled down her front, which caused her to panic and grab at a stack of napkins knocking over Fate's drink which unhelpfully decided to splash her shirt turning her into a giant sticky mess. Embarrassed beyond words she threw down the useless wads of paper and ran to the bathroom to wash her face and try to clean up the mess on her shirt. She also needed to run her overheated head under the cold tap to cool it off. It really was unfair how easily she could be riled up when it came to the blonde.
Snickering at the response Verossa said, "You know that girl is not as innocent as she looks. I'd be careful Major, that little lamb might turn out to be a lioness."
The blonde was conflicted; she wanted to stay and bash in the two idiots heads for making such off color remarks. Another part of her wanted to follow Nanoha into the restroom to see if she was okay. While the pair continued jabbering Fate noticed someone enter and her hackles immediately went up when she identified it as one of the waitresses who had glared at her friend. She was about to get up when the door swung open and out came Nanoha shirtless and clearly upset.
In a gruff voice she said, "Stay, eat, pay the bill," then she high-tailed it after the auburn haired woman.
Catching her before she got too far she was shocked when Nanoha fought her. Hugging her turned into an actual wrestling match where Fate had to get her into a joint lock and pin her to the side of a building. Breathing heavily she panted, "I'm not going to hurt you, calm down. You can't run around half naked."
As if realizing exactly what state she was in Nanoha went limp and Fate's grip shifted back into a more supportive hug. Leaning against the blonde she began to cry, this wasn't a good day, she should have stayed in bed.
Rubbing Nanoha's back, Fate's hand brushed over the scar and the woman nearly bolted again. Clutching her tight the blonde said, "Stop, I don't know what happened in there but remember who I am. I'm your friend, best friends, remember?"
Shaking Nanoha finally spoke, "I'll never be good enough. I'm a freak. You…"
Fate did the only thing she could think of and knocked their foreheads together which shut Nanoha up. Wincing at the pain she frowned at the taller woman, "What was that for?"
Eyebrow cocked Fate replied, "Because you were being an idiot and that was the only way I could think of knocking some sense into you."
Leaning in she kissed the slight red spot before stepping back and stripping off her shirt, handing it over to the woman she said, "Now put this on before someone sees us and we get arrested for public indecency."
Seeing the still wet top to Fate's bodysuit become exposed as the very chivalrous action to protect her own modesty was done so casually made her already overwrought mind fumble. It wasn't lust this time but gratitude that made her blush, no one had ever been this considerate of her. She did as she was told then stood silent, she had no clue what to say or do. Taking pity on the waif Fate took her hand and led her away from the restaurant and back down to the beach. Finding a secluded spot she sat them down, holding Nanoha in her lap she kept her close and remained silent. It took a few minutes before the woman was able to explain herself.
Covering Fate's hands with her own Nanoha said, "Today has been hell for me. My emotions are all over the place. I should just go home, I'm not fit to be good company."
Frowning Fate asked, "What happened back there? Did that waitress do something to you?"
Pulling away, Nanoha covered her face, shaking her head she said muffled, "Nothing."
A dangerous growl entered Fate's tone, "If that judgy little bint said something to you…"
Trembling Nanoha tried to keep her emotions under control while finding the right words to calm Fate down. Gripping her thighs tightly to get a hold of herself, "She didn't say anything to me. I… I took off my shirt and was washing my face when she walked in. She saw my scars and I… I freaked out. I don't like people seeing them, especially when I feel so raw."
Realizing her behavior wasn't helping Fate let go of her nascent anger. Choosing instead a more useful path of comforting her friend. Resting her head on Nanoha's shoulder Fate apologized, "I'm sorry I dragged you out today. I should have told those idiots to entertain themselves and taken you home. You didn't need all this extra stress."
Leaning back Nanoha sighed, "You shouldn't have to abandon your friends just to coddle me."
Fate made a grumbling noise as she said, "I never invited them, damn gate crashers."
Nanoha made a pained face which the blonde couldn't see but she could hear the strain in her voice, "Fate-chan, you've known them for years, I'm just some kid you met on the beach a few weeks ago."
Letting Nanoha go Fate turned her so they were looking eye to eye, "You said so yourself, you are an adult. You are also the person I want to spend time with, not them," then turning to look back out to the water she admitted, "I also know the real reason why they are here."
Confused Nanoha asked, "What is it? Why are they here?"
Taking a long breath to fortify herself, "Do you remember what I told you the first day we met?"
Thinking back to that day Nanoha frowned, "You were in a lot of pain that day. You… you spoke about how useless your life is and about… um suicide."
Closing her eyes Fate admitted, "I was a lot closer to actually doing it then I let on. I… I still have the pills at home. That day, meeting you, changed everything for me. For the first time in months I actually saw beauty in the world and it didn't hurt."
Clinging on to the blonde Nanoha pleaded, "Don't, please don't ever do it. I couldn't stand it."
Hugging her back Fate smiled through the tears now rolling down her cheeks, "I'm in a much better place now. Talking to you, it was the kick in the butt I needed. I started taking better care of myself. Up until recently I haven't been very good about taking my antidepressants or eating. Of course those cinnamon rolls helped a lot, especially after swimming. You make me want to be a better person, to live up to your example."
Now Nanoha was crying and she admitted, "I'm weak Fate-chan, I'm not the person you think I am."
Chuckling a little Fate said, "I know that. You are just as fragile inside as I am. You carry scars just as harrowing as my own. But you keep smiling, you keep giving with all your heart. Seeing you swimming, walking and talking with you, all of it makes me believe the world can be a better place." Kissing her forehead again, "Don't ever let anyone extinguish that fire inside you. You are an amazing young woman with a fantastic future ahead of you."
They stayed curled up together for a few minutes just enjoying the presence of each other and silently praying the moment would never end. Of course eventually the idiots called Fate and they had to break apart. Verossa immediately could see both women were burnt out emotionally and probably couldn't deal with any more nonsense with the locals. It had taken them long enough to extract themselves from the scene at the restaurant that they'd been left in, especially since they had no clue what had happened. Then trying to eat in that tense atmosphere was nearly enough to give anyone indigestion.
"There they are, Major I think old age is catching up with you, maybe you should head home and take a nap before dinner. I'd hate to see you fall asleep in your soup."
Unamused by the jab but quick on the uptake Fate stuck her tongue at the man, "If I look tired then it is because I've had to deal with you two meatheads all morning. My tolerance for your shenanigans is much lower than it used to be."
The teal haired man slung an arm around Vice before saying, "I guess we will have to find something to entertain ourselves with until dinner. The Major is a light sleeper, she'd murder us if we made a ruckus in the house."
Not as bright as his friend at least Vice was affable, "I guess so, what do you say we go rent out some jet skis?"
Bowing to Nanoha the pair scampered off to the appropriate beach hut.
Sighing Fate said, "Maybe I am getting old, watching those two exhausts me."
Studying the blonde Nanoha could see she wasn't the only one nearing her limit. Taking her hand she said, "You should go home and rest, I'll see you in the morning.."
Not wanting to let her friend go Fate said, "Come back to the house with me. We can get cleaned up and maybe watch a movie or something?"
Knowing if she was left alone her bad mood would just get worse and grateful Fate wanted her around she accepted. Coming to the great house again she felt a bit unsure, she looked like hell, what would the rest of Fate's family think?
Leading Nanoha inside the blonde said, "It will be just us for the next few hours, everyone else is out, thank god." Climbing the stairs she waved Nanoha to follow her, "I think I have some clothes that will fit you. My idiot brother doesn't understand women's sizing."
Fate's room was pretty barren and didn't look like she had made any attempt to personalize it. Going to the walk-in closet she pulled out a blouse and skirt and laid them on the bed before moving to her dresser and finding a package of new panties, a pair of fresh stockings and a bra. Holding the brassiere she eyed it then Nanoha before saying, "I think this will fit you, we are about the same size up top at least."
Blushing Nanoha said, "I'm pretty sure you are bigger than me."
Avoiding the woman's eyes Fate mumbled, "You overestimate me. Um, you can use my bathroom, I'll use the one down the hall."
Nanoha noticed the woman hadn't taken any clothes with her as she hurriedly limped out of the room. It was tempting to let her go and see what happened when she realized later her error. Instead she called out, "You need clothes too."
Halting Fate turned and with a red face she quickly grabbed the first thing to come to hand before bolting out the door. When she'd invited Nanoha over initially she hadn't thought too deeply over the idea of having a naked wet woman in her room. She really needed to get laid soon, the only problem with that was who was making her libido go crazy. She doubted she'd be able to get in the mood with any random woman down at the bar. And her own hand wasn't much of a substitute when all she wanted was to grind her… Not good, bad thoughts.
Taking a cold shower she then dressed in black slacks and a sleeveless shirt, looking at herself in the mirror she noticed she no longer looked as thin and weak as at the beginning of the summer. A fair amount of her muscle had returned and she had a light tan from her time outdoors. She could almost believe she was getting back to normal, if not for her damned foot. But even that didn't hurt as much as it had before, her ability to walk and stand on her own proved she was stronger. It sure had surprised her friends when she'd been able to chase after them earlier.
Combing out her hair she smiled a little, she knew who she had to thank for her better condition, the little devil in her room. Taking a calming breath she decided it would be best to make some lunch, abandoning her barely touched food earlier was regretful but necessary. Heading down the hall the noise of her cane had the bedroom door opening. The sight of Nanoha in the outfit she'd given her made Fate's throat go dry.
A little unsure Nanoha stepped out, "Does it look alright?"
Fate's brain had dissolved, taking her vocabulary with it, nodding dumbly she smiled. Nanoha gave her a questioning look which made her realize she must look like an idiot. Coughing she tried to get her mouth to work, "Lovely. Um why don't we get some food. We can eat in the family room and watch a movie."
Refusing to let her sight linger on the younger woman Fate limped off in the hopes of finding a distraction. Nanoha followed and couldn't help examining the way Fate's pants hugged her hips and highlighted the curve to her very squeezable butt. Not to mention the way the sleeveless shirt allowed her to see the fine definition of muscle in her arms which she already knew would be strong but gentle when holding her. Biting her cheek she tried not to let her imagination roam as she wondered if Fate was wearing a bra, she hadn't seen her take one with her.
The large kitchen was a dream come true and Nanoha soon took over the job of making lunch. Pushing Fate down on a stool she then bossily asked where all the tools she needed were as she washed vegetables and pulled out bread and condiments. By the time she was done the sandwich set in front of her looked like something out of a commercial, layers of lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, various meats and heaven only knew what else stacked beautifully on toasted bread. It seemed like a crime to eat such a thing, but she was also now drooling over it.
Finding some canned drinks and a bag of chips Nanoha balanced it all on a tray before saying, "Lead the way."
The walk to the family room wasn't long and when they arrived Nanoha immediately went to the love seat instead of the matched lazyboyz. Seeing this Fate wondered how safe this was going to be for her sanity. It was getting increasingly difficult to maintain her purely platonic facade around Nanoha. She wanted to kiss the woman, hold her, make love to her. Sitting down she nearly died when the woman sat snuggly beside her so the tray could lay across both their laps.
Fumbling for the remote she clicked on the tv and prayed she could find something to distract her from the warm thigh now pressing against her own and the mesmerizing scent of Nanoha's skin. How the hell had her body soap turned into an aphrodisiac?! It had never affected her this way before, but now she wanted to yank the woman onto her lap and bury her face… no no no bad thoughts! When had she become so weak? When had she turned into a pervert?!
Her fingers automatically flicked through the channels and it was only when she came to an old black and white film that Nanoha called out, "Stop. I love this movie."
Curling her legs under her Nanoha leaned closer to Fate, shifting the tray so it stayed balanced as she removed the last few millimeters of distance between her and her favorite person. She was now tucked into the blonde's left side, forcing the blonde to rest her arm across the back of the couch which allowed Nanoha's shoulder to press into the slim torso. As she squirmed into a comfortable spot she realized she couldn't feel a second layer of clothing. Fate was braless. It took all her self-control not to turn her head and stare at the tantalizing discovery.
Eating went quickly as Fate focused completely on the food, she couldn't let her mind wander. Especially on how perfectly Nanoha fit against her, or on how easily she could remove the tray and pin the woman to the couch. Nor on how that skirt was beginning to ride up and exposed more thigh than she'd ever had the good luck to see. Not to mention the blouse she'd given Nanoha was a tad too big, which meant more of her cleavage was on display.
When her meal was gone and her hand empty Fate felt at a loss, what was she supposed to do now? Her brain wasn't registering the movie and the whole situation felt far too dangerous. Nanoha moving the tray to the side table gave a little sigh before snuggling back into Fate, resting her head on her shoulder while stealing a cheap thrill by letting her right arm brush against the side of Fate's breast.
The touch made the blonde suddenly aware of her predicament, silently she cursed herself for her stupidity. When a few minutes later Nanoha shifted again she had to bite her lip when her breast was again the focus of an innocent snuggle. The action made her body react in a way that was not conductive for her sanity.
She couldn't let Nanoha stay in her current position so got up suddenly, rubbing her arms, she said, "I'm getting a little cold, let me get a sweater."
Before the woman could retreat Nanoha noticed two tight peaks straining against the clinging fabric of the top and had to choke back a whine. God help her, she wanted to touch the blonde. When Fate returned she was wearing a concealing sweater but Nanoha noticed the bounciness hadn't diminished, the damn woman hadn't put on a bra. Truly she was trying to kill her via blue balls… blue ovaries? When the blonde sat down Nanoha decided to take advantage of the situation again.
With a fake yawn she asked, "Fate-chan, could I use your lap as a pillow?"
Gulping Fate nodded, "Of course."
The closeness was amazing, the firmness of Fate's thighs and the wonderful scent that surrounded her made it impossible for her not to rub her cheek against the woman. Two very weird and conflicting thoughts came to Fate at that moment, 'Is she marking me like a cat? If she wants to rub her face on me I have a better place in mind.'
Nanoha held onto Fate's knee as she blindly stared at the tv, 'Was this what having a lover felt like?'
The feeling of long fingers playing with her hair startled her at first and she looked up. There was an unsure smile on Fate's lips that made her melt. Reaching to touch the slender hand she said, "It feels good."
Neither dared to push for more in the moment, each too scared of rejection while starving for affection. Fate wanted to keep Nanoha forever, spoil the kitten and bask in the warmth she provided. Nanoha wanted to cling to Fate and absorb all the acceptance and gentleness she radiated. Deep down both knew their behavior towards each other wasn't purely friendly but couldn't risk the What If.
It didn't take long for exhaustion to catch up with Nanoha, too comfortable and secure in her bubble of Fate-chan. Dozing off she emitted a small snore that sounded like a purr. Dreaming of a world where she had Fate by her side always. Turning over so she was soon buried against Fate's stomach and far too close to a place aching for attention.
Fate's internal conflict raged, Nanoha was too open and vulnerable. It'd be a crime to take advantage of her. So why did it feel like the woman was laying herself out on a silver salver? All she'd have to do was apply a little pressure and she'd get what she wanted, but at what cost?
Leaving Nanoha in three weeks was going to kill her, especially since there was nothing in Mid Childa that could fill the void. Silently she considered this future again, even if she couldn't become Nanoha's lover she didn't want to lose the woman. If she left she knew what would happen, her mother and brother would keep her busy and distracted with the family business but then at night she'd be alone again. Alone in either her own apartment that would be just a hole to sleep in or her old bedroom back in her mom's house. A room she had outgrown and carried memories she would rather not think about in the dead of night.
Staying here, would it be any better? Nanoha will go back to school and have even less time for her. Then she'd find a job and move on with her life, finding a lover, making a family. Could she stand that? Could she survive watching the woman marry someone else? Running away from her growing feelings to live in the dark gloom seemed more appealing suddenly. Of course she could just be honest and tell her what she was feeling. What was the worst that could happen? Memories of every single relationship she'd been in failing spectacularly killed her incipient hopes.
Lifting a lock of hair Fate leaned over and kissed it, 'I'm sorry I can't tell you the truth. You'd come to hate me someday. That's how it always turns out. I can't let that happen. I love you Nanoha so I'm going to give you the only thing I can, my friendship.'
Settling back she watched the tv and soon got caught up in the movie, she was a bit upset that she'd missed the beginning since she found herself a little lost. The actress on the screen was very pretty and in her attitude reminded her of Nanoha. When the leading man kissed the woman she felt her jaw clench, her internal possessiveness extending out irrationally. When the movie ended she turned off the tv and decided it'd be best to get a nap before dinner. Checking on Nanoha she fixed her skirt to make sure no one walking in would get a chance to peek on her then closed her eyes.
