Chapter 6

I Know, You Know

Gus had a weird look on his face when he woke as I made it back to the hotel room after sun up the next day. I spent the night with Bella. Not the happy ending kind of night though. We just talked for hours until she got drowsy and Charlie made it home.

By the way Charlie looked; his nice shirt not tucked in, hair a mess, a big grin from ear to ear. Until he seen I was at his house that was. I would say he got a little action last night with our very own Chief Vic. Action in which I had not even gotten close to with his daughter.

Only I had a great night with her. Bella seemed older than her age and very intelligent. Not mention sweet and kind. She was attentive when I spoke, she actually engaged in conversation with me. Something I found most women avoided. Hell, I wore a smile of my own this glorious day.

"How did your date go with Bella?"

"Not as I expected."

"They never do."

"It didn't end how you think it did Gus."

"It never does."

"What did Jessica want?" Gus left me a message last night while I was out with Bella. He was to meet Jessica for the sake of the case. It was sort of our little check in program. So we always knew where the other was. In our line of work it was a necessity.

"She was suppose to give me something of Bella's. It started out innocent enough. Jessica invited me inside. We went to the kitchen where she had a platter of chocolate cupcakes on the counter. Then she got freaky after she opened the can of frosting. You won't believe where she put the spatula loaded with chocolate frosting. I should have know what was up when she hopped up on the counter without any panties on and spread her legs."

"What did you do Gus?"

"I got the hell out of there. Jessica is a crazy woman. I gave those type up a long time a go."

"Did you at least bring me a cupcake?" I was starving actually. It sounded so damn good.

"Hell no. I can only imagine what Jessica does with her other kitchen utensils. It's not sanitary. I am going to grab a shower."

While Gus was in the shower, I called Bella. One to see if she was alright. The biggest reason I hated to admit to myself was I missed her already. There hadn't been a woman in my life for some time.

There weren't many who could captivate my attention beyond a romp in the night. They presented no challenge to me mentality. Honestly, I had never connected with a woman who could satisfy my body, heart and mind. Maybe it was a curse and I would never find her.

"Hey Bella. It's Shawn. I called to make sure you are doing alright today. I know you said Charlie will be around, if you need me, call me. I had a great time last night. Talk to you later." Sure, I could have said more or less too. Maybe I should have left no message for her at all.

But fate always play a role in everything I done. While Gus was in the shower, his cell rang. I took the liberty of answering for him in many ways. "Sexy Shawn here."

"Um...May I speak to Gus."

"His fine ass body is all wet right now, as he soaps up in the shower."

"Oh." Sure, I could of stopped this charade with Jessica. She obviously was interested in my best bud. The way she gasped when she said it, gave it away. But, you know I couldn't stop because she was a link to Bella.

"What can I do for you? Gus told me about the great time he had with you last night."

"He did. Well, I hoped we could get together today if he feels better."

"Oh, I think he feels just fine. I will let you in on a little secret, Gus is very shy and he loves forward women. Where would you like to meet at?"

The problem now was to convince Gus this was the evil necessity to have another go at Jessica. But I had confidence in my abilities to persuade.

"Jessica called. We are meeting her in twenty minutes."

"Why would you answer my cell? I'm going anywhere near her. Nope, not doing it."

When we made it to the outside of the diner, our colleagues were here for breakfast. Since this town was so small, I'd imagine people ran into the same folks everyday.

"Good morning, Daddy."

"Oh shit."

"By the way you owe me twenty bucks. I spent the night with Bella."

"You're disgusting Shawn." Jules made a horrible face when she had her moment. Then she stomped off like I ran over her cat or something.

"I don't know what her problem is." She made it clear to me long ago. After we went out a few times, she wasn't interested in a relationship, she didn't want to get tied down. We hadn't dated for almost a year.

"You are so dumb kid."

"Yeah, and you're bald. We all got issues Pops."

"Shawn." Gus grabbed me by the arm as Jessica pulled up. He was spooked by the little red haired girl. "You promised, you will stay with us and keep her away from me."

"Have I ever let you down?"

"Yes." Well, sure, there might have been a time or two I failed Gus. But he needed to stay focused on the happy, positive times I was by his side. However, I was on it, just liked I promised.

Needless to say, I already had to play defensive guard between them and we hadn't made it inside yet. Jessica tried to side step around me but I out maneuvered her. I jumped in front of Gus to protect him from her sex bullet.

"Are you alright Shawn?"

"I'm great. Let's eat." The hold I had on Jessica's arm didn't stop her from squirming around while I dragged her in beside me.

She was a persistent little thing if nothing else. As soon as we got seated at the table, the chase began; leaned in Gus' direction, low cut top, lots of giggles, starry eyes. She had it bad for the Guster.

"Is your tummy troubles better?"

Gus must have used it as his excuse to get away from her last night. But the huge breakfast he just ordered said otherwise. "Oh uh, yeah, I feel better."

The promise I made, was the promise I kept. "So, Jessica. You said you had something of Bella's which might help with the case."

"I do." The large handbag she carried obtained a book. "Bella was more in to this kind of thing than she was prom even. She use to read this all the time. It is around the time she met Edward. I never really understood what he seen in her. He can have any girl he wants." The roll of the eyes, the pursed lips, slight shake of the head. Jessica seethed with jealousy of Bella getting the boy.

"I told you Shawn." Gus handed me the book. While he seemed to gloat a bit.

"The Cold Ones; the mold ones." It was quickly tossed off to the side of the table. I still didn't believe in these legends.

"Bella likes strange things. She used to spend time on the reservation with Jacob. Until Edward got jealous and stopped it."

"How do you know that?"

"Jacob came to school to see Bella. I overheard them talking. Edward kept saying it wasn't safe for her to be around him."

"Jacob." Gus and I said his name at the same time. We both thought he might be a link to Bella we needed to investigate farther.

"Thank you for your help." Gus was such a polite person. He wanted to give Jessica, that a girl. Without getting close to her.

"Anything I can do for you, I will."

Gus totally ignored the last part while he shoveled the food in his mouth. Until, he kept jerking around in his seat. Since her hand was out of sight, I could only assume it was near him somewhere under the table.

"Gotta go." He was done with this. Hell, Gus was at the door already and I hadn't even got up from the table yet.

"We should go. We have a lot to do. See ya." I tossed money on the table and left a very disappointed girl behind.

As I cleared the door from her sight. I couldn't help but express the obvious. "Jessica is starvin for your Marvin. She is aching for your bacon. She wants to jingle your tingle..." Gus was in my face, not a normal trait of his. "She is a very dirty little girl, we should stay away from her. I'm on your side buddy."

The reservation was the next place we went. We only had encountered them briefly once. The footprints were made on their land after all. Only we didn't receive a very warm welcome when we showed up unannounced. Everyone we encountered told us the same thing, see Billy.

"We just want to have a look around."

"I will have my son take you."

"Sounds good."

We won the jackpot when Jacob came walking out to escort us around. "Does he look bigger to you?"

"Maybe."

"So, where to?"

"Just take us around. To the same spot we were at last time."

Jacob wasn't a huge talker. He was on the quiet side, cooperative and basically seemed like a good kid. A very buffed out, large kid. "Do you know anything about Edward Cullen?"

The veins in his neck popped out, fist clinched, jaw tightened. "I don't care for him." It was all we got out of Jacob but there was more to the story.

There had to be an icebreaker. A subtle hint for Jacob to open up to us. "Wait. I am getting something."

Arms flapped like a bird, the tweets came out of my mouth. Along with a little rain dance I performed for him. The snow angels were made in the weeds on the ground as my final performance.

With my eyes closed, the fingers went to the temple. "Bella was here. She came to see you frequently. She was in trouble, no, she was upset. It had something to do with Edward...it's gone now. I lost the connection"

"Bella was here. She used to come see me..." The sadness in Jacob's voice told part of the story. He fell in love with her and she had rejected him for Edward. The letter she wrote him I found in her panty drawer helped to connect the dots.

"I think Bella is in trouble. I also think has something to do with Edward. She needs your help buddy. We have to keep her safe."

"She will always be in danger. As long as she is with him." The veins in his neck popped out, fist clinched, jaw tightened, nostrils flared.

Jacob pretty much had this same reaction every single time Edward's name was mentioned. We really didn't many other clues from this visit. But I would work on it and on Jacob again.

Just about night fall we made another visit to the reservation. Only this one, we would go alone. Just to see and observe the area. There were so many unanswered questions of the going on around here.

"I'm not doing it."

"Come on, Gus. There is no such thing as vampires."

"Yes there is and I'm not doing it."

"You really don't believe that mumbo jumbo blood suckers crap do you? Jessica is messing with your head. She will say anything to get in your pants." Then it came to me, how to get Gus to play along with the plan tonight. "We could always go to Jessica's house and see what you can get out of her. Or maybe what she can get into; spatulas, chocolate frosting, can you imagine where she will put the cupcakes?"

"Fine. If we come across vampires out there, I am throwing you to them and running like hell." Gus meant business too. He changed out of his casual loafers into Nike cross trainers.

With just our trusty flashlights in hand for later we began the adventure. "Shawn."

Once again we ran across those same huge paw prints. There were many of them. As though a pack of something ran this property line. Gus took pictures of them on his phone. In line just as they had been made.

"Well, Gus, those weren't made from any vampire. So...do you have something to say to me?"

"No."

We continued on even though Gus wouldn't admit he was wrong. Nothing, I meant nothing stopped us on a case. Since I was bored waiting out in the weeds. I decided to have a little fun.

The flash light shone on my face, the lizard tongue came out. "You are Count Chocula, let me suck your neck. I bet Jessica want to suck something." The laughter roared from me. Not so much when Gus slapped the flashlight out of my hand.

"You better stop it Shawn. Or I'm leaving."

"Oh Gus, come on, man."

The twist of his nose started. The wrinkle meant something too. It was time to get serious. My boy was on it. I followed after him as we got deeper in the woods.

"I smell chocolate chip cookies, cotton candy...a hint of pineapple."

"I don't smell anything."

"This way."

Most would never believe what Gus could sense with just aromas. We had solved a few cases with Sherlock Smell on the scene. I'd bet money on him. But I had a problem with the twisted trail he took us on. We would have a hell of a time trying to find our way out of here.

By the time the trail got cold. We had no idea which way the hell to go next. Not to mention it was getting dark. "Whose there?" The leaves rustled in one direction as we shined the light. Then in another in a speed of light. We had a light show going on trying to follow the sounds made.

"This is not good."

"No it is not."

There was something or a lot of people totally surrounding us. Even the trees made sounds which were freaky. If they leaped from tree to tree, they were a superhero or perhaps there was a chance Gus was right.

When the untamed howls began off in the distance, there were a pack of dogs, wolves or something worse out here with us. I felt the hairs on my neck stand on end at attention as whatever it was let out another loud rumble which made my body shake. You could almost feel the ground move as the night echoed the call of the wild.

The loud ear piercing snarls were close by, about to meet us face to face. The full moon could have caused the bay of worship to it. Or as in any great movie; the vampire turned into deadly creatures, they came out in a full moon to hunt their prey.

"Gus, run." But when I looked behind me, he was already gone. "Shit."

It didn't matter which direction I went in, all I could hear was the growls and hissing which surrounded me. At some point I was knocked backwards by something of inhuman strength as I flew through the air. An invisible force field landed me on the ground. When I tried to rise to run again, I fell to my knees. Nothing would come into focus, my head was fuzzy.

The moon was bright, as I stared at it, I couldn't stay awake. I was so sleepy. I was so tired. I was almost out when I heard his voice. "Shawn. Shawn get up."

"Gus. Is that you? My best friend."

"We gotta get out of here."

No man left behind, it was our motto. We would give our life for the other. Gus put his arm around me with mine draped around his shoulder. It was the bright light, it was guiding our way out of hell.

"Whose out there?"

"It's Gus and Shawn." Gus communicated with them. I had to set down for a minute until I could gather my senses. After I shook it off, I was ready to roll.

"How did you know we were out here?"

"We heard a commotion and screams." Sam lead the pack of boys who came to our rescue.

"A lot of screams." Jacob threw in the last part.

"Did you see the wolves?"

"No. We didn't see anything."

"But we heard the screams. They sounded like little girls screaming." They seemed to drive home the point of Gus and I screamed for our lives. But when the voice came in view, it started to come together.

A small girl with short dark hair. Shorts and tank top only, no shoes. Small feet, perhaps a size seven. The same tattoo on her arm her matched the boys. A scowl on her face, not friendly.

"Who are you?"

When she blended back in the crowd of large boys. She hadn't answered but Sam done for her. "Leah. We should get you guys out of here. Do you need a doctor? I can call Cullen."

"No thanks. I'm fine." That quack would not touch me now, later or ever.

"This isn't California. You shouldn't come out here alone, especially in the dark again."

"We won't." Sure, Gus said it but his hand was behind his back. A trick we often used, fingers crossed because we didn't really mean it. We had gotten away with so much when we were children using this move.

When we were on our way back to the hotel. Gus gave me some information I missed. "There was a stench which became so strong I couldn't smell anything else. It took over my nose. I can finally smell again."

"What did it smell like?"

"Nothing like I ever come across before." This was a revelation. Gus could describe everything. Whatever it was, will end up helping us solve this mystery.

"Are you alight Shawn? Maybe we should have your head looked at?"

"Nah. I'm fine now." Since he opened up the communication between us after we made it back to the room. I need to address something. "Gus, may I please see the book Jessica brought you?"

"Not until I hear the magic words."

"Maybe, just maybe, you are on to something with this, cold one, vampire thing."

"Thank you Shawn. I'm going to bed. Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

Once I actually set down and read the damn thing. I found a piece of paper folded up inside the pages, no one else was meant to see. I was certain of a couple of things. There were some merits to what I had already thought. Bella was involved somehow, or she knew more than she let on. The good Dr. Cullen was a liar and covered up a lot, he wouldn't have the luxury of hiding it anymore with Woody going over his work. There was someone who wanted to really scare us tonight and hoped it would send us packing away from here. Or our lives were in danger from things which went bump in the night. Jacob was the key to Bella and Edward, he too was a part of this someway. The suspect list was very long. I still didn't care much for Edward and I didn't believe his choir boy persona for one minute.

We were about to crack this case wide open. When Woody arrived tomorrow, the dynamics would change. Dr. Cullen could no longer control the narrative. Everything was about to change around here and the truth would come out.

~PSYCH~TWILIGHT~PSYCH~TWILIGHT~PSYCH~TWILIGHT~PSYCH~TWILIGHT~PSYCH~TWILIGHT~PSYCH~TWILIGHT~PSYCH~TWILIGHT~PSYCH~TWILIGHT~PSYCH~TWILIGHT~

"A turtle neck?"

"I am not taking any chances Shawn. There are vampires out there."

There was part of me which couldn't bring myself to believe it. If there was one thing I learned from watching Scooby Doo and the gang , it was ghost and goblins truly didn't exist. Time after time, they proved it was humans behind the scheme of the terror.

We would find the one who schemed against us last night. We called an emergency meeting today at the diner. We invited everyone on the list of suspects too. Those on the reservation declined the invitation. They never liked to leave their land. It didn't matter though, if it was them, we would discover it eventually.

We were fashionably late for a reason. Gus was smelling out the room as soon as we arrived. I just followed him around while he whiffed up on everyone. I also smiled as some seemed offended at him getting so close to them. But he was on a hunt and where it led him to, was the best place to start investigating.

"What do smell?"

"Chocolate chip cookies, cotton candy...wait... and a hint of banana cream pie."

When I glanced around the room, sure enough, there was a freshly baked pie on the counter. "Is it the exact aroma you smelled in the woods?"

"Oh yeah."

"Are you sure Gus?"

His finger tapped his most intense sense, his most valuable asset. "My nose, knows."

My partner in crime and solving them from time to time too was always correct when it came to affairs of the sniffer. So, someone in this very room was out in the woods when we were there. With a photographic mind, you didn't need to make a list or pictures either. Someone in this damn room with us was a cold blooded killer.

We just had to come up with a way to sort it all out. Get each one of them alone so I could get a solid read on them. If that failed, we would follow them around and wait until they messed up. Oh, they always messed up and gave themselves away it was a given.

Edward moved around a lot when Gus was hot on the trail of smells. He avoided any kind of close contact. Bella was pushed in front of him as shield when we got to his vicinity.

"So, Edward, where were last night?"

"I was at home with my family."

"Can they verify your story?"

"You have no authority."

Oh, he played it as a cool, small, smaller than antiquate, cucumber. Sure, I had no real proof he was there or had done anything wrong for that fact. It never stopped me before though, it wouldn't stop me now either.

Face to face I stood with Edward. Well, more like my face to his neck. But that was not the point. "I know you know what I know. You know?"

"No." Oh, Edward was one tough cookie to break. But I had just begun to amaze him with my abilities, charm those around him and sell bullshit better than anyone in the room. I sort of prided myself on it.

"I am certain you are all wondering why we called this meeting. Bella is in danger. I saved her the other night with my cat like reflexes. She must have protection twenty fours a day. There is only one man who can keep her safe, Officer Lassiter. Along with the help of Gus and myself, we will save the day."

Lassie was awesome at visual effects. He took his baby from the holster and gave the steel a quick kiss. "Dirty Harry and I are ready to protect and serve."

"You wish to pursue Bella, so you make up things. I will never allow it to happen. You will not be alone with her again. Shawn cannot see the future, he is a fraud and I will prove it." Edward had his say in the little outburst. Sure, some of it was probably true. But, he totally underestimated me.

"Edward. Please restrain yourself. We are here to listen." It was a good thing Dr. Cullen stepped in. I was about to kick his son's ass. It was a good thing for him I had other things to do though.

"I'm with Edward on this one. I don't like the idea of you being anywhere near Bella. I think this meeting is over." Charlie was easier to fool than than the annoying boyfriend. If I got her daddy on my side it was smooth sailing from here.

When I couldn't get anyone to listen. I went to our fearless and horny leader. She seemed to have some persuasion over the local police. "Chief, you have to get Charlie to listen to me. This is life or death, I..."

"Mr. Spenser, I'm afraid without some hard evidence this is over. As a matter of fact Char...Chief Swan has asked I send you back to the office. You have done nothing but caused problems since you've been here. I will get a flight booked for tomorrow."

There was no way in hell I could let them send me back. Of course, Daddy had a huge smile on his face. He would take over my spot and I would never hear the end of it from him. There were some tricks still up my sleeve. He had taught me well.

'Shawn.' the old man's voice rang through the house when he yelled from the front door. Sure, I was busted already, he came home early from work. Even as a boy I was resourceful and I never gave up. I considered it part of my charm.

'Dad. What are you doing here? The station called and they want you to report immediately.'

'No they didn't. I got a phone call from Mrs. Smitt, what are you doing in the back yard?' The nosy old bitty next door. She just could not mind her own business. She continued to nark on me frequently because she was sweet on Henry. He used it to his advantage as well.

'I just have some friends over.'

Sure, it was lie. The old man was a human lie detector. I would give him that. He nailed me almost hundred percent of the time, but there were a few I got past him. When he swung the doors open to the backyard. Our little money making scam was over.

Gus, my lovely assistant, and myself decided to raise money for summer camp. I used my gift as Dad called it, to fool those around me. I done some reading of them and it totally dumbfounded them. Not to mention to give us some cold hard cash.

We were to perform the amazing magic act of making someone disappear. They paid us good money to see it too. We had refreshments put out of juice and cookies for the occasion.

'Go ahead Shawn.'

'I don't feel like it anymore.'

'Now.' When the old man bellowed the order. I knew my punishment would be worse if I didn't listen to him.

So, I put my black cape around my shoulders, the old man's top hat on my head. I picked up the magic stick, no more than one I found in the backyard, I still convinced the all the kids it contained the magical spell.

'I will amaze you with the magic stick. I will make Gus disappear.'

The curtain, I took off the shower, was pulled back on the wooden box. I even banged the stick around on the sides to prove to them it was a inescapable death trap and I was a true magician.

Gus stepped up inside the box and I closed the curtain along with my eyes before I went to performance mode. I spun the box around a couple of times on the special platform we built for it. I said the magic words. Then pulled the curtain back to show them, the Great Shawn, had made Gus disappear.

They oohed and were completely fooled by what we had done. Except the old man wasn't. He came over and lifted the trap door for all to see I was a fraud. Gus was tucked down in the bottom of the death box.

We had to give them all their money back. Needless to say, we weren't the amazing team then, our friends didn't trust us anymore. Then came my punishment.

'Watch me perform a great magic act.' The old man was about to pull the tarp off of something, I personally didn't like where he was going with it. 'You will spend the summer restoring the boat. When I pull the tarp off after you are done, it will be a brand new boat. You will make a brand new boat appear.'

The punishment made Gus and I work as a team everyday to complete the task. We learned to get along as one, we learned the others strengths and weaknesses. Not only had it brought us closer. We became blood brothers that summer. A pact which was still in effect today.

It also brought me closer to Dad too. It was after Mom left us and he was all I had. We spent all our time on the boat fishing for years. What was amazing, was what you were punished for became what you were grateful for. He still had that damn boat too in his backyard.

But my fight to stay had just begun. Where there was a will, there was always need for; a slick, handsome, amazing, magical psychic. Sometimes, you had to fool people to bring them closer together. Sometimes, you had to expose things by pulling back a few curtains.

When I glanced out the window to stall for time. I seen it, the magic trick, I would amaze them all with. The large truck boom swung the tall steel beam to get in place. The rope was not tight on the one end. The weight of it would come crashing down.

"Clear the room Gus. Give me room to work." There was no one in this world which I trusted more than my oldest, dearest, magic act assistant.

"Everyone please back up and please be seated. Shawn is in a trans." Gus was a great at this. He was directing the traffic flow right back to where they just were. Not to mention he made me look good. He grabbed a table cloth off the counter. He held it up high in front of me. The curtain was drawn when he lowered it down and it was showtime.

"Oh...Oh...Oh..." I done them in the highest shrill voice I could muster. My know all fingers went to the temple, it was time to earn my pay. "I see it now. Bella dressed all in black. With those lush brown curls cascading down her back." I wrapped a few strains around my hand and took a sniff of those scrumptious strawberry hairs. Then I felt it, Edward smacked my hand. Oh, I would so get him later for it.

"Please refrain from touching Shawn when he is in a trans, it's very dangerous." Gus then smacked Edwards hand with a spoon. He was a germaphobic after all and my best buddy. So, I kicked it up a notch.

"Why Daddy? Why didn't you listen to Shawn?" I threw myself on top of the table as though I was Bella weeping on Charlie's casket. "You would be alive today if you just listened." Of course when I pulled this table cloth off, all the dishes came crashing down on the floor with it.

Everyone looked at me like I was crazy. Except for Bella. Nothing I had done so far seemed to bothered her. But then I noticed it. The strange little dark haired girl was trying to compete with me; her mouth formed a perfect gasp shape, her eyes went to a blank stare, she was there but she wasn't anymore. In a complete trans. The blonde boy held her arm tightly as though he knew what was happening, it happened frequently.

The Alice chick was stealing my thunder. Well, not on my watch. Besides I still needed to buy a little more time when I glanced out the window. I jumped up on top of the long table where the Cullen huddled together. Tied the corners of the table cloth around my shoulders for a cape and I done my thing.

"Let me suck your blood." I done my best vampire impression. I roared, I showed my teeth like a mad dog. I made the room clear as they backed far away from me. Mission was accomplished. So I hopped down and waited for my cue.

"Three, two, one..." Gus counted down as I fell lifelessly backwards into his arms. He caught me as though we had rehearsed this a few time. Actually, we done this hundreds of times.

There was no use for the table cloth any longer so I tossed it over Edward's head as I passed by. They just thought they were going to walk out in the middle of this act but I had something still to show.

The poll hung about three feet lower on one side and was no longer centered. The frays of the rope were about to snap. The guy operating the machine had trouble trying to swing it away from the sidewalk. Edward appeared agitated by me.

Once more, I had to make them aware of my abilities. I threw my body in front of the door to block it. "If you walk out of here Chief Swan you will be killed today."

Bella bit her lip. She shrugged off whatever it was Edward said in her ear. She walked away from her little boyfriend. Edward was down right pissed off at me.

"Maybe you should listen to Shawn."

"Don't tell me you are buying into this crap Bella."

"It seems real to me. I don't want to see anything happen to you."

"I'll be fine. I have a job to do. Move out of the way Mr. Spenser."

Just about the time Charlie stepped out on the sidewalk then went to cross the street. The steel beam went crashing down on the center of his squad car. His face went totally white. He gasp trying to catch his breath. He knew I was correct. I had daddy on my side now.

"Charlie, are you alright?"

"Uh...yeah...I."

"You should listen to Shawn. He knows and he just proved it. Please." It was his daughter's pleading eyes he couldn't refuse. He nodded his head in agreement because he still couldn't form a sentence. Having your life pass by in front of you, caused the reaction.

It was settled much to Edward's dislike. Chief Vic, Dad and Jules would stay with Charlie twenty four seven. Gus, Lassie and myself wouldn't leave Bella's side.

'Well, I gotta hand it to you, Shawn. You pulled a bunch of crap back there."

"I just pulled the curtain back Dad. Just like you taught me." My confession seemed to baffle the old man. He taught me so many damn life lessons it was hard to hone in on which one I meant.

They all seemed to have dislike for my idea. Jules was the next one to express it. "You just want to be near Bella and you'll do anything to get close to her."

"Why are you so mad at me Jules?"

"If you don't know why Shawn. I am not going to tell you."

"Jules..."

"Forget Juliet. Look at this."

Burton Guster had a few tricks up his sleeve as well. He took the spoon out of his pocket which he had smacked Edward with. The sliver object was bent with a hump in it. There was a lot more going on than we had anticipated before. How could a simple whack cause that kind of damage?

"I think it is time we pay the Cullen house a visit. Edward is involved somehow. I just don't know how yet."

"Shawn." Gus got my attention. There was only one more thing which had to get done. It was the most important thing we had done today.

"Suck it."

We done our best suck it dance on the sidewalk for Edward as he drove by us in his stupid Volvo. He didn't have a cool ride like our Psych Mobile. The Blueberry had seen some real action. Not many saw the Toyota Echo as a girl getting machine. But then again, this town had never seen the like of us before.

"What are you guys doing?"

"The happy dance. I get to spend time with you Bella. I thought later we can go with you to visit Edward. I don't want to totally keep you away from him."

"They won't be home tonight. They are going camping this weekend."

"Really. Then maybe we can go with you some other time."

The sweetest smile crossed her face. Before she gave me a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you for saving Charlie."

While she walked away, my hand went to my face and I slightly rubbed over where she laid the kiss. "Shawn." Gus brought me out of it. "Get in the car, your stupid is showing."

We followed behind Chief Vic, Charlie, Dad, Lassie, Jules and Bella. It was as if no one wanted to ride with us. Which was fine, we had to make a stop at the hotel and gather our thing then meet up at their house. But there was a plan brewing on the horizon.

"Tonight, we ride Gus."

"You mean break into the the Cullen's house."

"That is exactly what I mean my friend."

Jasper~~

Alice had to find a way to relax. She wore the burden of her gift of sight in the future. I seen first hand how it twisted her up inside, she always blamed herself for what was about to take place. Even though she had no control over the situation at all. But nothing like what she seen last night when we chased the two vampires on the wolves land. It almost started another feud between us and them.

They were here for Bella. They wanted Bella. For some reason they felt the connection to her was Shawn which put him in danger as well. Then you had to deal much more than what was on the surface.

Edward was childlike at times. But he would die to protect Bella as much as he loved her. When the connection was brought up between her and Shawn. He first argued it wasn't there, then ran away because he knew it was. He didn't show back up until this morning when Carlisle tracked him down.

Carlisle was what kept us together, as a family and coven. He tried his damnedest to accommodate each of us, encourage us to become better vampires and most of all handled whatever was thrown his way.

He stopped the war which brewed last night with the wolves. Sam too agreed it was more important to protect the lives of Shawn and Gus than to grieve our differences. If hadn't been for them, the vampires might have feasted on the humans.

We were to secretly watch over the people from California which enraged Edward. It wasn't like he didn't care about them and their well being, he didn't care for how cozy Shawn was with Bella.

"Alice are you certain?" Carlisle stepped up as our leader. As he always had.

"I saw exactly what Shawn did. Charlie was killed by a vampire."

"I don't believe for one second he is actually a psychic. He is trying to steal Bella away from me." Edward doubted anything relating to Shawn and his abilities. But they were proving to be real and getting very close to the truth about us.

"Well, actually, Edward. Shawn does get Bella. She grows close to him during the investigation. I seen them get married, they have a child."

"No." Edward was off again in a flash, mostly in deniable fashion of what the future held. This was the first real relationship he had. It was rough being in love. Even rougher at thought of losing them.

"We'll go after him." Rosalie and Emmett took off too.

"Perhaps in the future. You should tell me Alice before we tell Edward anything else about Shawn and Bella."

"I'm sorry Carlisle. It won't happen again."

"It's not your fault. It is your gift and should be treated as such. We will sort this mess out when we get back. Lets catch up with the others we need to hunt, fuel up before we face the vampires again."

Carlisle had no idea what it would be like to face the newborns which were coming to town. He had the strict rule of no human blood consumed in our coven. We only hunted and killed animals. But those newborns drank as much of it as they could get. It coursed through their bodies and gave them a strength we had no match for.

My attention had to be on Alice. I felt the sorrow drip from her. "The last one to take down a grizzly bear is a rotten egg." This was the first giggle she made today. She pushed herself to race me, beat me and get that bear.
