Chapter 6:

A few days before the first task for the Tri Wizard Tournament, Katie sat in her usual spot, Oliver with his arm wrapped around her as usual. Katie couldn't help but feel guilty, she hadn't spoken to Marcus since the first night of school. Now a days she did her best to stick by either Alicia or Angelina's side, never straying too far from the girls when walking around the hallways. She figured if she wasn't alone, then he couldn't confront her. He had a great habit of literally bumping into her the moment she was alone.

George didn't mind too much, once they got in the common room, Katie would usually go to her room or spend time with Oliver. She was starting to notice her friends acting weird around her, often whispering to each other. She was probably thinking too much into it. They obviously were simply better friends having known each other since their first year, while Katie had only known them for a little over a year.

"How are you doing Katie?" Alicia asked her, breaking her from her thoughts.

Embarrassed she realized she was probably just sitting there not saying anything for quite some time now. "Oh yeah, sorry, I'm fine."

"Then for the fourth time pass me the god damn ham" Alicia laughed with everyone else.

"Whoops" quickly reaching for the plater and passing it to her friend. "Hey guys I'm going to head to the library I really need to finish my potions assignment." With how strangely her friends had been acting, Katie didn't bother to invite them. Needling time to herself. She would have asked Oliver but lately she felt like he was smothering her. Katie knew he was just concerned for her, but it just felt like pity to her, and that was not what she needed.

She kissed Oliver on the cheek, and gave him a convincing smile, getting up, she headed off to the library. It was a Friday night so most kids would be hanging out in their common rooms or going to parties. So, she figured she would be safe from Marcus finding her for the night.

She found a table towards the back away from the few other students that were there. Sitting down she pulled out her books and notepad, scanning over the pages. She was studying early for Advanced potions and had borrowed a book, but it was written in. Confused Katie flipped through the pages not fully understanding everything that was transcribed in it. There were altered potion formulae and invented spells. She began scribbling all the words into her notebook, one word stood out the most. "Sectumsempra" written underneath it said "Vulnera Sanentur" Clearly the second part was a reversal spell, she wondered what it would do. Curiously, she went back to the first page and saw "Property of the Half-Blood prince" written on it.

After studying for a bit Katie got distracted and started doodling on her note pad. She was still upset, and she felt like she was starting to push her friends a way. It hurt every time she saw them whispering to each other not often filling Katie in. Were they talking about her?

"Hey there Goldilocks" she heard him whisper in her ear. She closed the book, hoping he hadn't seen what was inside. Sitting beside her Marcus kicked his feet up on the chair across from him, crossing his feet at the ankles. "How are you doing?"

"I'm fine, thanks" She briefly looked up at him before looking down at her book.

"Oh bullocks. That's a load of crock." Startled she looked up at him, studying his face.

She must have said 'I'm fine' at least 10 times today and not a single person had challenged her on it. Can he really see through her that easily? "Can you stop, I'm trying to concentrate."

"You're not fine."

She went back to scribbling in her notebook. Reminding herself that she had a boyfriend and should not be talking to him. Last time she ended up crying in his arms, and she didn't think that Oliver would be so approving of that. "Normally when someone asks, they don't really want an answer. Simple pleasantries"

"Well, I would like to know. You weren't in the best of shape when I saw you last." He reached over and snatched the pen from her hand mid-sentence. Wagging it in the air in front of him, raising his eyebrow in a silent question.

Had he really changed so much since she had first met him. No, it couldn't be, people don't change they just learn to alter their behavior. "You don't have to pretend to give a damn about me." Katie said.

"Question still stands, how are you" He clearly wasn't going to give up.

"What can I say, I'm doing the best I can. Wake up, eat, sleep, study, and do it again, until one day its not so difficult." Katie was being honest; she was doing the best she could given the circumstances. Her mother's words still haunted her, and to be honest she was scared. That the same thing was happening to her as well.

He gave her a look showing her that he wasn't convinced.

"I just… I feel like I'm trying so hard to be okay, so my friends stop worrying about me." She wasn't sure why, but it was easy to vent to him. Maybe it had to do with the fact that they didn't know much about each other. So, she could vent and not worry about losing a friendship. This wasn't a friendship, was it? She wasn't so sure of that answer anymore. He had showed that he could be kind. "What are you doing here anyway?"

"Like it or not, I'm here, and you can't just shut me out" his hand slid next to hers their pinkies just barely touching.

"Can I ask you something" just above a whisper.

"What's that blondie?"

She almost didn't trust her voice, so she cleared her throat. "Why did you punch Oliver?"

His hand moved the rest of the way hooking his pinky with hers. "You know why princess" He gave her a knowing look. So, it was true, he did like her. She was more surprised that it didn't shock her.

She looked at where their hands were joined for a moment before pulling hers away. "Can I ask you one more thing?" hoping she wasn't pressing her luck.

"Shoot"

"Why did you stay with me the other night?" she was afraid to ask. Having avoided him for two months now. There were times where she found him to be cold, thoughtless, and hard to understand, while other times he could be kind and almost loving.

"Just because I'm the bad guy doesn't mean I'm a bad guy" He said in a husky voice, standing up to leave. He always did that, said something that made her question everything she had previously felt about him. He had a softer side, she wanted to believe that.

"Why don't you let other people see this side of you?" He gazed down at her, there was an intensity in the way he looked at her.

"When people see good, they expect it, and I can't live up to somebody else's expectations." He walked off leaving her to her thoughts.

Marcus continued to walk through the corridors searching for Alicia or Angelina. It took him almost an hour, but he eventually found Alicia. He nodded his head to an empty classroom and ducked in. She followed a few moments later, placing a silencing charm on the room as she entered. "I got some information." Marcus said.

"What did you find out?" Alicia asked.

"Theodore Bell doesn't exist. Graysen Bell is Katie's grandfather, but the only records I found were for one son, Cassius Bell. I even checked with the Hospitals, there's no birth certificate for Theodore Bell. So, it's possible, that he planted those memories into Katie's father. If he's an Obliviator I wouldn't put it past him to do a memory altering charm as well." Marcus said.

"Is that all you could find?" Alicia asked shocked to hear the news.

"No, Katie Bell had a brother, and his name was Cassius Bell II. I found a death certificate, but I'm still waiting to hear back from one more contact." He explained.

"If that's not her uncle, what do you think he wants with her? Could this have something to do with the Tri Wizard Tournament?" she asked him. Normally she was the problem solver and yet here she stood with no plan, no direction, and no idea how to help her best friend.

"Just keep her away from him until we find out" He sounded almost urgent. That's when she knew, he did care for Katie. It was the only thing that made sense. "I'll do what I can." With that he left the room with not even so much as a goodbye. Alicia ran to find Angelina to fill her in.

It was soon November 24th the day of the first task for the chosen champions. Katie was currently eating breakfast chatting idly with her friends. Oliver arrived at the table a little late, dropping a kiss on her cheek as he sat down next to her. "Is your head still hurting?"

"Yeah, I just got back from the nurse. So, it should get better in a little bit. Thanks Oliver" She smiled at him.

She couldn't help but admire the boy she called her boyfriend. He was patient and kind, and she could see herself making a life with him. To her he just seemed so solid, and she could trust him not to cause her a heartache. He was the stereotypical 'nice boyfriend', he was friendly and had an easygoing personality. Always very polite in nature, and pleasant to be around. Things were simple with him.

The owls began pouring into the room, and a packaged dropped in front of Katie. There was a letter attached to it, excited she opened it and began to scan the words. Quickly apologizing to the table, she picked up the package heading to her dorm room to open it up.

Angelina and Alicia watched as Katie left The Great Hall. "Do you think that was from him?" Alicia whispered.

"Should we stop her?" Angelina asked in a low voice hoping Alicia would have an answer.

Alicia shook her head and whispered back "How could we do that without her knowing our suspicions?"

"I'm not sure but we need to stop her." Picking up their stuff they ran after Katie.

"Incendio" Katie whispered as the letter in her hand lit up into a flame and quickly vanished. When she got to her room she sat upon the bed and opened the package, pocketing a small parcel. Her friends came rushing into the room, noticing they were too late. Katie looked up at them slightly confused as to why they were so out of breath. "You okay guys? Want some candy?" She asked passing the package over to them.

Alicia took the box from her friend and peered inside, noticing that indeed it was just a box of candy. "You guys alright?" Katie questioned.

"Oh yeah just fine, were just excited to go watch the first task." Alicia lied.

"Okay I'm going to take a quick shower, to try and get rid of this headache and then we can head out" Katie grabbed her shower catty and a change of clothes. Her head hurt like hell. When she moved around, it left her dazed and nauseated.

The girls looked at each other confused when she had finally left the room. "Can you tell if there's any magic on them?" Angelina asked.

Alicia cast a revealing charm but didn't notice anything, it was ordinary candy. Just incase she whispered "Finite Incantatem" it wouldn't get rid of every spell, but it was better then nothing. "It seems to be regular candy" Alicia was confused.

Soon Katie returned and they headed down with the rest of the students. They followed Katie as she weaved her way through the crowd in an almost dazed state. A cannon shook the stadium and the crow cheered louder if that was possible. Cedric Diggory stepped out of the tent. The girls continued to follow Katie as she led them a section of bleachers, making her way to the top row.

By the time Victor Krum came out the girls noticed that Katie wasn't watching the games. Her eyes were on Victor Krum's headmaster. "I'm going to go to the bathroom really quick."

"Want us to go with you to the loo?" Alicia asked noticing Katie acting strangely.

"No thanks, I'll be right back" Katie quickly disappeared in the crowds.

Alicia dragging Angelina with her "Somethings up, let's see where she goes" The girls followed behind Katie as she made her way down to Igor Karkaroff the Headmaster for Durnstrang. Hiding behind one of the towers as they watched Katie approached him. The girls only had a view of Katie's back, and when Igor Karkaroff turned to face her, they had a view of his front. "I can't hear what they are saying."

"Let's get closer then." Angelina whispered back. By the time they got to a closer spot Katie turned around and walked away and they hadn't heard a single word of the conversation. The only thing they saw was Katie hand something small to the man, and he quickly tucked it in his pocket.

They followed Katie as she made her way back into the castle, Angelina and Alicia trailing behind her. They waited a couple moments before going into the castle behind her not wanting to be caught. Surprised to see Katie right there, standing in the middle of the hallway not moving. "Katie, are you okay?" They rushed up to their friend concerned.

Katie shook her head confused looking around. "Ugh yeah I'm fine, just in deep thought for a second." Not convinced Angelina and Alicia shared a look.
