Cait flew straight to Twin Oaks and waited for Michael to join her. Luckily, she didn't have to wait long as she was wearing herself out pacing up and down. The white chopper landed, and Michael exited quickly and headed towards Cait, the sun glinting off the silver top to his walking cane.
"Cait, are you OK? What do you mean Hawke has disappeared?"
"I'm fine Michael, I didn't want to say too much on the radio, I just wanted to get here and see you in person. But I really don't have much more to tell you. Hawke went to the dead drop location on foot as planned, but when he hadn't returned by the agreed time, I radioed him but got no reply, so I flew over the location and saw nothing. No activity, no heat sources, no vehicles, nothing. Hawke has literally vanished.
Michael stroked his moustache in the way he often did when he was thinking.
"I was afraid something like this might happen" said Michael quietly.
"Excuse me! exclaimed Cait raising her voice and pointing her finger at Michael "are you telling me you sent Hawke and I into a situation you knew more about than you told us at the briefing? You put us, Hawke in danger?"
"Look Cait, I genuinely thought this was just going to be a simple collection mission…..but we have literally just received some further intelligence"
"What other intelligence?"
Having shut the chopper down, Samantha had now joined them. She handed Cait a file.
"We have reason to believe that our agent was taken by the KGB and is being held somewhere and offered up as a trade for some KGB agents that we have that they want back." said Samantha.
Cait opened the file. There was a black and white photo of a woman and some personal information.
"Is this her?" asked Cait holding up the photo? "She's pretty, what's her name?"
"Susan Owens, 35, fairly new to field work but she was perfect to place inside the facility as an undercover agent." replied Samantha
"So, why can't you just swap the KGB agents like they want and get her back?" asked Cait looking at Michael.
Michael sighed and seemed hesitant before replying
"Because Cait, the KGB agents we hold are far more important, far more influential, far more dangerous and therefore we don't want the KGB to have them back."
"So, what are you saying? You will just leave her out there somewhere?"
"Cait, if we knew where she was being held then we might be able to try and rescue her, but we don't have any idea at the moment, but of course we're working on it." said Michael
"Anyway, what does all this have to do with Hawke?" asked Cait, closing the file and handing it back to Samantha.
"We think that the same people who took Susan probably also have Hawke" replied Michael.
"You think? Probably?" exclaimed Cait, kicking at the ground with her foot. "anything could be happening to Hawke right now and it was you who sent him in there!"
"Cait, calm down" said Michael softly, approaching Cait and placing a hand on her shoulder. "Samantha…"
"A man by the name of Philip Gregory has recently moved into the Cheyenne Wells area. He is a rich businessman with lots of political connections both locally and we suspect nationally. He runs a legit business, has a lovely house and a nice family but he can be quite ruthless in his affairs, both in relation to his business and personal life. He recently appeared on local TV at a charity event and one of our agents recognised him as Oleg Antonov, a Russian by birth and a fully paid-up member of the KGB. We have no intelligence to suspect that he is an 'active' member, however his arrival in the area coincides with not only the information leaks at our facility, but also with Susan and now Hawke's disappearance." said Samantha
"So, what? You think Hawke and Susan are being held at his house? In which case let's just take the Lady and go get them back." said Cait.
"You know we can't just do that Cait, much as we might want too, and besides we don't even know if they are being held there, OR even if Antonov has anything to do with it. However, we might have spotted an opportunity to get someone on the inside but it's a massive risk. Everyone suitable whom we have available, it's possible that someone on his staff may recognise as an agent and we can't risk losing anyone else."
Cait paused before responding.
"They won't recognise me." said Cait calmly
"You? What are you saying?"
"I'm saying put me on the inside." said Cait
Michael ran his hands through his hair and walked a short distance away from Cait before responding.
"I can't let you do that Cait, it's too dangerous."
"That's as maybe Michael, but I can't just sit back and do nothing. I need to find Hawke and I don't care what it takes."
"Are you serious about this Cait? And let it be known here and now I'm not happy about it." said Michael.
"I've made my decision Michael, now what do I need to do?"
"Be in my office at 08.00 tomorrow. Bring some clothes, whatever you need to be away from home for a maybe a week or so and we'll brief you."
"Fine Michael, see you tomorrow." replied Cait as she climbed back into Airwolf's cockpit. As soon as Michael and Samantha were clear she had the Lady in the air.
Cait realised she was shaking. She had held it together whilst talking with Michael, but now alone she couldn't stop the tears from pricking her eyes. The thought of String being held God knows where and having God knows what happen to him was a thought almost too much for her to bear. But she knew that what she had said to Michael about doing anything to find him was exactly what she intended to do, and she wouldn't rest until she knew String was safe.
