Elizabeth's hands moved gracefully along the soft yellow fabric making sure each stitch was perfect and in line. 20 stitches to an inch for a strong long lasting seam. Each of the butter yellow squares of the baby quilt were 5 inches. Rather big but she didn't want the squares to be too small because she knew when her child rubbed their face against the blanket they would want big soft squares not hard seams everywhere. Little bits of cream colored yarn was tied to the fabric. This was her invention because she imagined as the child got older they would have fun playing and rolling the little yarn bits in between their fingers as they slept. The blonde woman's life had changed drastically over the last five months. Will noticed it too. She had been getting up earlier and cleaning more. She had been sewing and even learned to knit. Will insisted she didn't but he knew not to stop his wife when she was determined and so she began working as a part-time nanny for the Banks family. The Banks were one of the richest families in the town and since they were able to afford it they had many children. Danial the oldest was Seven, Anne and Sarah were twins and they were six. Another pair of five year old twins both girls Elizabeth (But Elizabeth called her Beth so no one confused them) and Lyra and lastly the infant that was not under her care but always with the mother Mrs. Michelle Banks' name was Levi. Elizabeth Turner greatly enjoyed her time with these children. Their mother had become sort of a friend to our expectant mother and was just as overjoyed when Elizabeth came around five times a week for a few hours after the children were done with their various lessons. Originally Will was worried that Elizabeth would strain herself and hurt the baby but soon his fears were eased when after about two weeks none of the children acted out much. Will and Elizabeth had never truly thought how they would get the child to behave until Will suggested one night at the dinner table.
"My love tomorrow when you go to the Bank's household to take care of the children. Why don't you talk to Michelle and ask how she got her children to behave so well. Elizabeth smiled at her husband lovingly.
"I will"
She continues to eat her food in silence thinking. She and Will had fought over something silly a few nights ago. For a week their relationship had been in a rut and neither of them could truly feel that magical loving feeling that was normally present. It didn't bother her too much because it had happened before. All romantic relationships no matter how strong their bond was would at some point have a time where they couldn't feel the love. And that was ok it would only take a little bit before the feelings came back. Elizabeth suspected it was just her being irritable from the pregnancy hormones and then him being so happy but not getting a happy response back from her. It wouldn't last long she knew that.
The next morning as Elizabeth dressed to go to the Bank's Will places a kiss on her cheek and wraps his arms around her laughing. He was happy today and so was she and that was good because it meant they were out of that rut. And just as quickly as he came he left and ran down the stairs and out the door to his smithy in town. It made her laugh at how he could still act like such a little boy sometimes. It was heartwarming.
All the little children greeted her happily when she got there around seven that morning. Danial and Anne were still in their night clothes but all the other children were dressed. Then Sarah came down the stairs half dressed with just her little slip on yelling "Lissy" her annoyed mother trailing behind her with a little pale pink dress. Lissy was supposed to be lizzy but Sarah had just lost her two front teeth so she wasn't able to sound out z's and they instead came out as s's.
She gave all the children a hug and started to prepare their breakfast. While all the children were eating Michelle and Elizabeth sat in soft chairs in the corner of the room talking.
"How did you get them all to behave well?" Elizabeth asks.
"Well you know when we were children our fathers would paddle us a few times for doing something bad, well I don't do that. Instead I ignore their bad behavior and reward the good behavior. Anne threw a tantrum that was just ignored and so she stopped because what's the point in throwing a tantrum if you don't get your way. You have to learn that children don't act out because they are bad kids but because they feel comfortable enough to express their true emotions around you. Sometimes Children don't understand their emotions so they start crying. I help my children understand what their feelings are so they can talk about it not cry and break things." Michhele explains.
Elizabeth has always held high respect for this woman but now she has even more.
"Children crave your attention so they try anything to get it, if you don't give them enough it will come out in bad behavior instead of good."
Elizabeth nods with a smile.
"Thank you because I was honestly lost because i've never really raised a child before and the maids raised me so I didn't really know how to do anything"
"You will be a great mother Elizabeth just look at how much my children love with just three weeks of knowing you and your husband Will is such a nice man I honestly could never see him hurt anything in less out of absolute necessity."
Elizabeth laughs and nods, that's one of the reasons she loves him so much.
