A/N: We finally get a confrontation between teacher and student.
"You'll have to do it sooner or later," Izuku coached himself as he stood before the guest room door, his shaking hand almost on the knob.
Seeing Aizawa again shouldn't have made him as nervous as he was, but something about totally dropping your old life and cutting off your homeroom teacher definitely wasn't about to make it any easier for this confrontation to happen.
Steeling himself and gathering strength, he took a deep breath and rose his hand instead to knock.
After two raps on the door, he heard a deep voice from within. "Come in."
No turning back now, Izuku, he told himself as he grasped the knob and turned.
Aizawa was sitting up reading a book when he entered, and when the man looked up, his eyes widened in surprise.
"Midoriya," he greeted quietly, his voice tinged with shock. "I... wasn't expecting to see you so soon."
"It has been a while, huh, Sensei?" Izuku chuckled awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. "I... I'm sorry for all the trouble that I caused. It wasn't my intention to send Yuuei into a panic like that."
Aizawa groaned, setting the book down to pinch the bridge of his nose. "Not even a minute into this conversation and you're already apologizing for things you couldn't control."
"B- but, I-"
"Problem Child," the nickname made him flinch, but Aizawa looked so exhausted and fond that his shoulders slumped a little bit. "I never blamed you for Yuuei panicking. I was worried, true, because you were my student and I needed to keep you safe, but I never blamed you."
Izuku stayed quiet at that, looking down at the floor for a moment. It wasn't what he expected; he expected Aizawa to get angry, to ask him what in the hell he'd been doing all this time, to accuse him of being a villain because of who his family was. He hadn't expected the man to be so concerned, and it made his throat tighten a little.
"Sit if you want," his voice brought him back to the situation, and he looked up to see Aizawa regarding him calmly. "It's not like I'm in any position to detain you, even if I wanted to."
He nodded, taking his offer and stepping forward to the chair next to the bed. With some hesitance, he sat down, crossing his ankles and folding his hands in his lap.
Aizawa looked mostly the same from when he'd last seen him at school, except a little more gaunt than before. Aside from the bandages and the gauze on his face, he hadn't really changed much.
Aizawa seemed to be doing much the same to him, his eyes rolling up and down with a familiar note to them that made some of the tension disappear.
"You cut your hair," he noted, nodding to Izuku's trimmed locks. "And dyed it black. It looks nice."
"Thanks..." his hand momentarily went up to brush against the curly hair, but then it dropped back into his lap. "It was Mom's idea, actually. People still recognized me when we moved."
He nodded, a pained look crossing his face. "How did you manage to move schools without Yuuei's knowledge? I thought you would have had to turn in withdrawal forms."
At this, Izuku gave him a confused stare. "But we did," he said. "My mom submitted a handwritten form too, just in case something happened to the first and it never came in. I thought you'd been told that I was changing schools and that I didn't want anyone trailing me."
Aizawa's eyes widened a fraction. Withdrawal forms? Nobody had even bothered to mention to him, Izuku's former teacher, that he'd withdrawn formally from Yuuei. Not even...
Hisashi's words came back to him, and doubt settled in his chest. "As much as you'll hate to hear, Nedzu isn't on your side. I highly doubt that rat would care about my son leaving unless it meant he was losing one of the most promising heroes of his generation, not to mention All Might, which he very much is. Why else were you sent on so many missions to track us down?"
At the look on his face, Izuku paused. "You... were never told about that?"
"Not once," he confirmed, his brow furrowing in contemplation. "For the longest time, I thought you were dead."
A cold note struck through his heart at that, and he could barely manage to whisper, "... so the rest of the class...?"
"They refused to believe it. They never gave up hope of finding you," Aizawa replied, his eyes growing soft again. "I doubt they'll give up trying to find me, either... those kids... they really got close after you went missing."
Izuku's throat tightened, and his eyes began to burn with tears at the thought. Uraraka... Iida... Todoroki...
Aizawa's chuckle snapped him out of his thoughts, and when he looked up, the man was regarding him with mild amusement.
"There's the tears I was expecting to see," he pointed out fondly. "For a moment, I was worried that you'd changed a bit too much in the past two months."
The boy managed a weak laugh at that, brushing his tears away. "I... I missed you, Aizawa-sensei."
Guilt went through the man at the smile Izuku gave him, and he swallowed past the growing lump in his own throat. "I missed you too, Midoriya," he said quietly, clenching the blanket tighter in his fingers. "Your seat is still open, should you decide to come back."
His smile grew sadder at the thought, and he looked down after a moment. "I'm sorry, but... but I don't think I'll ever want to go back there. As much as I miss my friends..."
"I understand." Aizawa nodded in sympathy, heaving a heavy sigh. "For what it's worth, I wouldn't want you to step foot back into that torrent right now either. Your father was right when he said that Yuuei is no place for you anymore."
Though he meant the words differently, they still made his heart pang with hurt. His self-doubt began to creep in again, and he found himself muttering, "Because of me, right?"
"Because of the whole traitor business," Aizawa clarified, frowning softly at the boy. "Now that you've left us, the staff is in more of a frenzy trying to find out who it really is. I myself have my conclusions, but..."
He hesitated to speak again, but Izuku understood. A bitter note rose in his mind, but he kept down the thoughts as they came.
Because of your previous mistake, you don't want to jump to accusing someone so soon again. How ironic, considering how much evidence you must have compiled by now, right?
Still, he tried to smile at his ex-teacher. "So, um... what has the class been doing since I left? Are they okay?"
"Bakugo has taken up your mantle as a problem child, I'm afraid," he sighed dramatically, and it made Izuku giggle a bit. "Uraraka and Iida are the same as always, but they've gotten closer with Todoroki. Todoroki..." he paused, "... he's... well, himself."
"Has he asked Shinsou if he's your son yet?" He asked.
Aizawa startled at that, nose scrunching up in confusion. "What."
"Oh, sorry, sorry." The greenet waved it off sheepishly. "It's just... before I left, he really had a theory going that you and Shinsou were either related in some sense or that you adopted him like you did-" Izuku trailed off, seeing Aizawa's expression go from confused to pained. It did little to quell the pain rising in his own heart as he quietly asked, "... how's Eri?"
"She..." Aizawa paused, but took a breath and continued. "She... didn't take your departure very well."
Izuku's heart clenched for the girl. "She relapsed badly, didn't she?"
"It was awful," Aizawa confirmed, closing his eyes. "Luckily we had Mirio there to help, but... these days the only people she wants to be around are either him or myself. Since Yagi left, we're the only two she wholly trusts." A bit unfortunately for me, he thought distantly. The last thing I deserve is her trust.
"I miss her so badly," Izuku commented with a sigh. "But I can't... I can't somehow alert Yuuei to my whereabouts or status. If what Dad's planning..."
He paused, looking up with wide eyes. Should he reveal it?
Aizawa sensed his hesitance and nodded. "He alerted me to his plan, you're not going to foil it by mentioning it around me. I've been... sworn to secrecy."
His shoulders relaxed a little at that, but he still treaded the topic carefully. "Well... if what Dad's planning comes to fruition, the last thing I want is for the real traitor to figure out everything... if they haven't already."
Aizawa nodded, his expression growing serious again. "Like I said, I have my hunches... but if it is whom I think it is, it just doesn't make sense as to why they would continue to feed the League information now that All For One is out... unless they're trying to make an example out of the school, but if your father is so adamant that the kids are spared..."
"Who's been running into the League?" He asked worriedly, hands clenching together.
"So far, only staff," he confirmed, and it made Izuku sigh in relief. "Although sometimes the kids have been called in for backup, but the League retreats soon after that. Stranger still is the villain Dabi's association with Endeavor, but I expect Todoroki has already begun to make his own conclusions on that front."
"Dabi... I figured he would be ruthless with him." Izuku sighed again, giving the teacher an unimpressed look. "No offense, but I do kind of hope that he takes him down someday. The things he's done... nobody should have ever allowed him to become so powerful with the things he's done and the people he's hurt."
"Oh no, amen to that," Aizawa nodded. "I personally detest the guy. But he seems to have started to atone... perhaps Todoroki had something to do with that, or maybe he's finally woken up to what an asshole he is."
He paused, seeing the boy look back toward the door for a moment. "Oh, sorry."
"No, no, I think the same." Izuku leaned in to whisper. "It's just that if anyone swears in the house, we have to put a coin in the swear jar."
Aizawa's eyebrows rose. "And... how's that been working out for you?"
He shrugged. "When we still lived near Aunt Mitsuki, whenever Katsuki came over he usually contributed at least once or twice per visit. Usually we only have to worry about it getting filled up now when Tomura gets really pissed off or if..." he hesitated.
Aizawa knew immediately. "So you really do house the League here. Somehow I should have guessed, considering who All For One happened to be."
"Please don't tell Yuuei," Izuku pleaded. "They've been getting better because of it, and at least now I can keep tabs on what they're doing! And- and Mom just loves them all and has practically adopted them into the family, and it would totally crush her if they had to leave-"
"Calm down, Midoriya," the teacher tried to soothe, raising his hands. "I'm not going to report it to anyone. It is concerning that your best company is a band of notorious villains, but aside from the fact that their leader has somehow... been adopted into your family, it's one of the least shocking things I've found out in the span of twenty-four hours."
"One of the most shocking being...?" He could venture a guess.
"That the infamous 'god of villains' is your father, for one," Aizawa relented, and he nodded. Yep, called it. And was that a stealth pun? Considering the mirthful glint in Aizawa's eye, perhaps it was. "And that All Might is somehow in agreement with him, however that came about."
"Well, it's a funny story there..." Izuku chuckled nervously, rubbing the back of his neck again. "The night he came to get me, apparently he somehow got in touch with Yagi-san and told him that either he was with him in his quest to destroy Yuuei from the inside or against him, and in that case he would take the family away where not even he could find us."
"Fitting blackmail," the noiret drawled. "He's practically been your stepfather ever since the year began, I can see why he was so compliant."
Izuku froze, his cheeks turning red. "Wh- huh? Step-?"
"Kid," Aizawa's expression was so incredibly baffled that he felt ashamed he wasn't figuring out what he meant. "Have you seen the way he looks at you? He's so incredibly paternal that it made me wonder myself if I was growing soft just by seeing it. Apparently I have, considering everything, but that's beside the point."
"... so I have two dads?"
"That's what you took away from this?"
"I'm sorry! I just can't- All Might is my stepdad?!"
"Your mother is still married, isn't she?" He was greatly concerned at this. The last thing I signed up for is some kind of Midoriya cheating scandal between the sweetest, yet one of the most terrifying mothers I've ever seen and the actual king of villains-turned-doting husband and father.
"She is, but that's beside the point!"
"Now you're just imitating me! I'm too 'problematic', as the kids would put it, to be a stable role-model with my profession!"
"I- I'm sorry, Aizawa-sensei! I don't think you're that problematic, I think you're actually a very good role-model for your students!"
Hisashi chuckled softly, stepping away from the guest room. He looked down at Inko, who was wringing her hands together in worry. "It seems they've finally talked it out."
"So they have," she uttered, her face pink. "Does... does he really think that Yagi and I...?"
"As much as I hate to admit it, he does see Izuku as his own son," the white-haired man stated. He wrinkled his nose. "Ugh, this means that my sworn enemy and I share custody of my son. I might need a glass of whiskey to get through this unfortunate revelation."
"So wait," Inko paused, eyes wide. "Does this mean that my son has two fathers?"
Hisashi looked at her in disbelief for a moment before his expression lightened and he chortled, patting her head.
"I'm serious, Hisashi! I'm too old and frumpy to keep custody with two men!"
"You're not old, you're gorgeous," he chastised, effortlessly lifting her up. Her squeak made him grin mischievously. "Besides, I'm not sharing my wife with All Might. My son is a requirement, but it doesn't mean he gets you!"
"You're so awful, Hisashi," she sighed into his shoulder, her face red-hot. "What am I going to do with you?"
"Not divorce me, I hope," he pouted, kissing the crown of her head.
"Heavens no, I would never." She looked up with a stern expression. "Unless you happened to be using our sons as mindless tools for evil, then I might have to start looking into a lawyer!"
"Tomura is my successor, not my tool. I care about him," he defended, "and I would never harm Izuku! I've only been home for two months, but I would decimate the entirety of the hero world and then find a way to off myself if I ever let myself use him like that."
"You are such a father," she sighed, wrapping her arms around him. "Speaking of Tomura, what about the League? Are you really going to let Touya traumatize Todoroki-kun if it means taking Endeavor down a peg?"
"That man utterly deserves whatever the kid's got coming for him," Hisashi relented, "but since Izuku still cares for him so much, I won't let the Todoroki boy get hurt. His father is fair game though, love, I'm not sorry."
"Oh no, I'm never contesting that." Inko's eyes grew hard with anger. "For everything he's done to that poor family, he deserves it. In fact, I hope Touya reconnects with his poor mother soon. I know it would relieve me if I found out that my long-deceased son turned out to be alive and well, even if he was with the villains."
"Only time will tell what he decides to do, I suppose," the white-haired man mused as he sat down in the chair in the living room, Inko on his lap. "In the meantime, however, I think we can arrange a little heart-to-heart with the two. If what Izuku said is correct, I think Todoroki Shouto will greatly appreciate the confirmation."
Inko's expression grew heavy, and she sighed. "The poor dear... I never got to formally meet him before we moved. I do so hope that he and Izuku can patch things up, he seems like such a lovely boy."
A/N: Adaptational goodness for AFO, even though in canon the only reason he's grooming Shigaraki to be his successor is to piss off All Might and is using him to get his real body out of Tartarus. Don't worry, he's not totally good. He's still AFO, after all. Just as more of a soft spot for orphaned children.
Please tell me what you thought!
