To Love a Demon Prince
Chapter 6: New Normal
Magnus smiled bemused to himself as he simply laid there and let Jace marvel at him. It had been a couple days since the big reveal and Jace seemed rather enthralled by Magnus' demon-form. He'd sometimes just lay with Magnus, gently tracing Magnus' horns, or getting lost in Magnus' eyes. The eyes especially. Jace seemed to love them and... Magnus loved the way Jace looked at him, his mouth a little open in awe, so much adoration in his own eyes as he looked into Magnus'.
"They're just... so gorgeous", muttered Jace, head tilted. "I mean, I love your human eyes too. They are so... warm and filled with love. But these are... golden. You have kitty-cat eyes, kitten."
That made Magnus grunt a little. Somehow, his imposing, dangerous, impressive demon-form had earned him the nickname kitten from his boyfriend. The blatant disrespect of it all. He loved it.
"I love you", whispered Jace with a smile as he leaned down to kiss Magnus gently.
"I love you too, my angel", replied Magnus gently, wrapping an arm around Jace.
He pulled his blonde down to lay atop Magnus' chest. Jace laughed a little as he snuggled up to him more comfortably. Their fingers were linked, hands resting on Magnus' chest.
"My love...", started Magnus after a moment. "I've been... doing some research."
"Mh? New project? Wanna share with me?", asked Jace curiously.
"About you", corrected Magnus carefully. "I... After you said that your parents made a deal with the morning star, I've decided to do a bit of research in Edom."
"...That weekend work trip wasn't a work trip", concluded Jace with a frown. "W... What? Is it bad? Am I... What am I...? What did you find out? Mag-"
"Sh, slow down, love", Magnus interrupted him in a soft, soothing voice, pulling Jace closer so he could kiss the side of his face. "It's... not necessarily bad. You're mostly human."
"Mostly human. Mostly. That's totally reassuring-", blurted Jace out.
"Shush it", interrupted Magnus as he pressed a finger against Jace's lips. "Let your non human boyfriend continue talking instead of freaking out."
Those mismatched eyes blinked up at him curiously and, with a smirk forming on his lips, Jace opened his mouth a little and let the finger slip between them. Magnus made a little noise as Jace sucked his finger into that pretty mouth. Huffing amused, Magnus leaned forward.
"You are insufferable", grunted Magnus. "I love that about you."
"Tell me more, demon prince boyfriend", requested Jace as he placed a kiss on the finger.
"Your energy is... special. I told you that", Magnus continued after a moment, sitting up against the wall. "Your energy is demonic. While you are... human... your energy is demonic. That might influence your life-span. Especially now that... you are... with a demon. A full demon. I've responded to your energy in particular, from all I have gathered, I think that your energy might be strong enough to bond with another demon. I'm not saying this to push you into anything, but because I think that you have been in the dark about yourself for long enough. You could bond with a demon and... a demon-matebond is... something eternal. You deserve to know that you can do that and that you could be immortal then. That is an option you have... and that's it."
Silence hung between them as Jace sat opposite him, staring at him curiously. Tentatively, Jace started to climb into Magnus' lap, laying his arms around Magnus' shoulders and kissing him. Magnus smiled into the kiss, his own arms finding their way around Jace's waist.
"What does that mean? I mean, a matebond? What is that?", asked Jace curiously.
"It's... demon marriage, but... much more intense. Not just a piece of paper and a promise, it's a bond between your... essence. The demonic magic. You could say a... soulbond of sorts."
"Sounds much more special than marriage", offered Jace after a beat, his fingers tracing along Magnus' collarbone. "Sounds... really special. Is that even something you... would want? I mean. Just. In general. No pressure. No... proposal or anything, just... Do you ever want that?"
Before answering, Magnus took his time to think about what he wanted to say. While thinking, his fingers wandered through Jace's hair, combing through it gently until his lover relaxed and went lax against him, practically melting in his arms. Sighing contently, Jace rested his head on Magnus' shoulder and enjoyed the treatment, giving Magnus the time to think.
"I do", was Magnus' answer. "I just... I've dreamed of it for decades, many decades. I've been in love before and had gotten my hopes up, though I never found the right person. No pressure."
Jace huffed out a laugh at that, burying his face in Magnus' neck and placing a kiss on it. "No pressure indeed. I love you, Mag. Let's take this... one day at a time, mh?"
"That sounds like a wonderful plan. It's worked for us so far", whispered Magnus.
He tilted his head to kiss the side of Jace's face. They both adjusted their seating a little, Magnus sliding down more on the wall so he was half-laying, with Jace curled together on his lap, resting against Magnus' chest. The sunlight was dancing on Jace's golden hair in a way Magnus loved watching. Slowly, his fingers traced through that golden hair.
"I love you", hummed Magnus with a gentle smile.
"I know that", chuckled Jace, tilting his head up to look into Magnus' eyes. "And I know I'm not just a source of food for you, but I... I gotta ask. How that works. That you're... feeding on me. How do your powers work and what kind of effect do they have on me."
That made Magnus heave a sigh. Of course those questions were bound to come, he had been anticipating them. For the past week, they had talked about various aspects of Magnus' heritage. He was a demon, centuries old, there was so much to tell and explain.
"I admit, I did take you home with me that first night because I was hungry. And because you are gorgeous. And because you were willing. You've been undressing me with your eyes half the evening, who am I to pass that up? And you tasted... you tasted so good", Magnus sighed pleased. "I... You tasted so good that I wanted more. But I also needed to be careful. The thing about me and my powers is that I can influence people. I can amplify their attraction to me. But... when you told me you're asexual... you do not have... sexual attraction. You weren't drawn to me for my nature."
"...That's... That's why you acted so incredibly weird when I came out to you", interrupted Jace surprised, eyebrows raised high. "You... I thought you were just kind of freaking out because you didn't understand asexuality. Which. I've been there before."
"No. That wasn't it. I spent... a lot of time worrying that... what drew you in was my nature, that your attraction to me was being amplified by my demonic nature. It's one of the greatest things I struggle with in relationships. Whether they're real or if it's just sexual attraction multiplied and the chance to get more of it. When I feed from you, I feed off sexual energy – energy released by your pleasure. And I give something back, that something can be addictive. Some people spend long periods with succubi and incubi solely for that gain. I was falling... in love with you, not knowing if what you felt was real or if my demonic nature was making you believe so. Knowing that you..."
"That's why you agreed to move in after I came out. Because knowing my feelings for you are real gave you... a sense of security...", concluded Jace with the smallest smile.
He cupped Magnus' cheek, tilting his head to make the embarrassed demon look at him. And then he kissed Magnus. It was the softest touch of lips, warm and comforting. It made Magnus smile into the kiss, his arms around Jace's waist to pull him closer.
"You don't need to be embarrassed about your insecurities", whispered Jace. "We all have them. I had them too. I wasn't sure if what we had was real for a long time too, we seemed to be doing hook-ups and... the lines blurred. I didn't know if you wanted more, or if I was alone in that boat. I've... never been great with emotions. Putting myself out there – emotionally – is very... it's exhausting and stressful. That's why I have this family of mine that lives here, with me, because I am so afraid of loving and losing people, so I keep those I love close to me. And I was afraid to love you, because if I loved you and you didn't love me, then... I would lose you. And it terrified me, Magnus. The thought of loving you and you feeling differently terrified me."
Magnus nodded slowly as he let that sink in. Of course. After all Jace had been through in his life, he was afraid to love and lose. Gently, Magnus kissed Jace's cheek, trying to reassure his lover.
"I love you. And I love this family", whispered Magnus. "You have no idea how much this means to me. I've gathered my own little family over the centuries. Catarina, Raphael, Ragnor, Tessa. And... For the sake of honesty, while we're sharing our doubts and fears... I am terrified to lose you. All of you. I'm in love with you, but I love this family here too. I love them all too. I try not to love mortals, not be in love with mortals or love them as family. That small circle I have, they are all immortals like me. I've stopped getting invested in mortals centuries ago, because I'm immortal, Jace. I... I have looked like this for centuries. While the mortals around me age, grow old and... fade away and die. I feed on mortals, sometimes for longer periods, but I haven't fallen in love with a mortal in centuries. And the thought petrifies me."
"...Magnus", whispered Jace, unsure what to say.
Though Magnus interrupted him by pressing a finger against his lips. "Let me continue, love. I don't regret loving you. Or your family. I haven't been this happy in centuries. It's not that I wish I didn't love you, or never met you. I'm... just also... terrified. Because you are all mortals and you will... grow old and die and I will be left alone and it will hurt worse than ever before, because it's not just you, it's a whole house filled with love and laughter that will stand empty and I will still be left standing, even when this house will be long gone and there will be nothing left but my memories."
"Y... You have... been thinking about this... a lot", noted Jace, voice wavering.
"Every time I'm alone", admitted Magnus, avoiding Jace's eyes. "I... I'm afraid of that. It terrifies me. And every day I spend with you, every laughter and meal and milestone I share with you, I grow more terrified of what will be in... in fifty years, in a hundred years..."
"I'm sorry. I don't know what to say to that and I know it's not my fault, but I'm still sorry that you are feeling that way and I am sorry there is nothing I can do", whispered Jace.
He cupped Magnus' face with both hands, holding it like it was the most precious thing possible. And then he leaned in and kissed him again, with so much more feelings and love in it.

Jace stood in the doorway to the attic, his arms crossed over his chest, hip cocked leisurely. His head was tilted sideways, resting against the door-frame. Magnus was in the attic, his attic, working. The attic was his work-place, everything in here was all Magnus. Magnus, who was currently sitting at his table at the window, drawing sketches, while his latest prototype hung off the mannequin. It was beautiful. A golden and white dress, but it looked classy not tacky as gold tended to do with clothes. That was Magnus' special talent. He brought out the beauty in things.
"Are you going to stand there watching me all day?", inquired Magnus without turning around.
With a huffed-out laugh did Jace approach his lover from behind. He wrapped his arms around Magnus' neck from behind, resting his chin on Magnus' head to look at the sketches.
"How's that work?", wondered Jace thoughtfully.
"Well, you put the pants on and-", started Magnus sarcastically.
"Not the outfit", Jace laughed, tilting his head down to kiss the top of Magnus'. "You are a famous fashion designer. You're also immortal. How do you hide your immortality when you're famous?"
"Ah. That part. Well, it helps that I have many witch-friends. I can look this age for about... thirty years. It lasts me well between twenty and fifty, though I start putting a bit of gray in there after forty. And then magic. A glamour that makes others see me differently, that makes me look like I age. And, admittedly, when I am a prominent figure, I... will need to lay low for a couple decades. Usually around fifty. Live a regular life that doesn't draw huge attention. Then, I can usually reinvent myself because no one will remember or make the connection anymore."
"You? Laying low?", laughed Jace. "I can't imagine that."
The smile on Magnus' lips was a bit strained. "Well, it's not... that hard. When you have to abandon your entire life, everything you have. Then... it's... You don't want to be in the spotlight and the center of attention. You're tired and you mourn the loss of your own life, in a way."
That made Jace frown, so he just kissed the top of Magnus' head again. "I imagine these things will be harder from hereon out. With videos and the internet."
"I imagine so too", agreed Magnus thoughtfully. "Well, I think there is a lot of world to explore, that might make things easier. But also, the internet culture helps too. Instead of outing immortals, they turn into memes. Look at Keanu, he has been getting away with the world knowing for years now because it's one big, funny joke to everyone."
"Keanu... Reeves...? I... No, never mind, let's not. Okay."
"There are so many immortals I know", whispered Magnus teasingly. "Some you might have never guessed are immortals. Others who do a very poor job of covering it."
Jace hummed and climbed into Magnus' lap. "Tell me all about it, babe."
"All? That's going to take a lot of time", huffed Magnus.
"I have nothing but time", declared Jace, getting more comfortable. "Why, do you have anything more important to do than tell me stories?"
The cheeky grin on his lips made Magnus laugh and put down his pen. "I suppose I am overdue for a break and I can't imagine a better break than having you on my lap, mh."
"Very reasonable of you", whispered Jace pleased, kissing Magnus' cheek.

It was a week where Magnus was gone – away on a fashion show in Paris. Jace had a concert in New York, so he couldn't take the week off to accompany his boyfriend. Instead, he spent the first two days thinking very hard, on his own. Then, he spent another two days watching his family very closely. Both things he had been doing for weeks now, but more in passing. Now he was doing it with intent. He had thoughts swirling in his head, thoughts he didn't know how to express. Or if it was even his place to express them. Maia and Clary were over for dinner, which seemed the best time to bring it up. The entire family was gathered around the table.
"I wanted to talk to you guys", stated Jace, cutting through the chatter and laughter.
"O—Okay, why does he sound serious? He scares me when he's serious?", asked Simon nervously.
"Maybe he has decided to propose to Magnus and needs our help planning?", whispered Bat.
"...How about you two shut it and let Jace continue?", suggested Maia dryly.
The three werewolves exchanged a look at that, the two boys looking sheepish, before their attention turned back toward Jace. Now everyone was staring expectantly at Jace.
"I love Magnus – don't interrupt me, I know you know this. But... it's more than that and more than just a proposal. I don't want him to lose me. He's immortal. We talked about this, a few weeks ago. He... told me just how terrified he is of losing us. And I don't... want that. I don't want him to suffer that loss and I also... I've spent the past couple of weeks thinking about whether or not this is something I can picture for me, because this is a decision I can't just make for his sake."
"You... want to become immortal?", asked Clary, her eyebrows drawn tightly together.
"I... think so. Maybe. I would have never considered that if it was just me. But... Magnus. I love him, I can... it may sound ridiculous, but I can actually picture being with him for eternity. And it's not just him. Cat and Luke and Madzie and Raphael – though I may not know him that well just yet, I do like the guy and I know how much he means to Magnus."
"...You just listed my entire family", noted Clary. "I... I hadn't even... considered that."
Maia reached out to grasp her girlfriend's hand, squeezing it in support. The heaviest was Alec's gaze, it seemed to weight tons as it bore into Jace's soul.
"What do you want from us?", asked Alec. "Our blessing for this? Our support? What is it?"
"I... want you", admitted Jace. "And I know I'm asking a lot there. Maybe too much. There is no pressure to it, you don't... have to say anything right now. I just need you to know that I am choosing immortality, to stay with Magnus. And when I said I don't want him to lose us, I didn't meant him and me as the us, I meant all of us. You are my family. You also became his family. I want you to know that I'm not trying to... to pressure you or anything. But I want you to know that neither Magnus nor me... nor Cat or Luke or Madzie... would want to lose you guys. And I think that eternity with my family sounds far better than without you."
"What... do you think?", asked Simon confused. "I mean, uh, how?"
"I've put thought into that too", admitted Jace and ducked his head. "So you know how Luke became immortal because werewolves, when they form a matebond with another supernatural being, adapt their life-span? So he became immortal by being mated to an immortal. Maia, Simon and Bat are all werewolves. And... if... This is just a suggestion, okay? But if Alec, Izzy and Clary were to become immortal, by, say, becoming a vampire through the bite of a trusted vampire of our own – like Raphael, for example – then... that would kill two birds with one stone."
"You want us to become vampires?", asked Isabelle stunned.
"It's just a suggestion. It seems safe. Catarina has enchanted objects that allow vampires to walk through daylight too, so it wouldn't limit you. Raphael is proof that you can change your diet and not kill humans for food. I just... Magnus pointed out to me that he would miss us all in a hundred years. He talked about how he would be left all alone by the point this house is long gone. And I don't want that for him. And, very selfishly, I don't want that for myself either, if I were to become immortal to be with him. I know that's asking a lot."
"It... is", agreed Alec, nodding slowly. "And you can't expect us to make a decision lightly."
"No. Of course not. And there is no pressure. I mean, depending on how young you want to look as an immortal. But I just..." Jace shrugged awkwardly, ruffling his hair. "I want to put my own feelings out there. I want you guys to know what I'm going to do and what I want."
"Okay. Okay, yeah. That's... I am very proud of you for putting your thoughts into words", praised Bat, reaching out to pat Jace's head. "There, there. Very good."
Jace glowered at him at that. "You people are awful and I hate you."
"You lo—ove us. And you know that Bat is right. Very good of you to use your grown-up words to tell us how you feel", argued Simon, a teasing grin on his lips.
Jace rolled his eyes and slid down a little in his seat. Though it was a bit halted at first, conversation picked up again after that and laughter started to fill the room once more. It only made Jace feel heavy and sad, because Magnus truly had painted a very, very vivid picture. This house, empty, void of their laughter and voices, them all dead, on a graveyard, leaving Jace all alone. The thought made it hard to breath for him and while he knew that he could just be mortal, live out his life, he also didn't quite want that. And not just for the sake of Magnus either; that wouldn't be the right motivation to make such a decision. It needed to be about Jace.
Over the past weeks since telling them the truth, Magnus had told them so many stories about his life. The adventures he had had, the lives he had lived, the people he had met. The revolutionary times he had witnessed. All the change, all these amazing things that he might not have been able to picture centuries ago. What kind of amazing things may lay ahead of them that they could share. The lives and places they still had to explore and live. Jace wanted that, he wanted that for himself. There was still so much to do for him. So much music to compose – even if he may have to lay low in fifty years, he would have centuries more to create, to see what music was yet to come.
Author's note: Deadass the only reason I'd take immortality would be to continue creating, writing, for centuries and centuries to come :D" ANYWAY. Next chapter is going to be the final one so stay tuned ;)
