Chapter 5: Comfort and Lullabies

Before Papyrus could say anything, Sans jumped up into his arms and started to bawl as he wrapped his own arms around him and had a tight grip on them. Papyrus was really confused and disoriented about why Sans was so scared and upset, but he knew what he had to do. "Hey...hey..." He whispered in his gentle way as he wrapped his arms around him. One of his hands gently held Sans's head close to his shoulder, letting him cry, and the other was comfortingly rubbing his back.

"Shhhh...shhh..." Papyrus shushed softly as he slowly started rocking his brother back and forth gently. "It's okay Sans...I'm here..." Sans sobbed into his brother's shirt, knowing that he was there, holding him close, and being comforted. "i-it was *hic* awful pap...!!" He hiccuped between sobs. Papyrus was ready to listen to what Sans had to say. "Whatever happened that made you so scared brother?" He calmly asked him.

"i *hic* had a *hic* bad nightmare..." Sans sobbed. "Aww...Sans..." Papyrus said softly as his brother sobbed harder into him. "Do you wanna talk about it...?" He asked. Sans shook his head. "not *hic* now..." He whimpered. Papyrus understood him since he was too scared to talk. "Okay...okay...you don't have to tell me right now..." He calmly said, "But whatever happened wasn't real...If it involved me saying bad things to you, then remember, I would NEVER in my life say those things...I promise from the bottom of my heart...I love you more than anything else in the underground, and I won't stop doing the things I do for you...Because you're my brother..."

Sans heard everything Papyrus had just told him. But before he could get another chance to talk, he was bawling harder as tears were soaking his shirt. "Hey...hey...Sans...it's okay..." Papyrus comfortably whispered, "It was all just a bad nightmare...I'll make sure it doesn't happen..." Sans understood him, but he still bawled into his shirt and trembled. Papyrus soothingly held his brother close and started rubbing his back comfortingly while gently and slowly rocking him back and forth.

"Shhhh...shhhhhh...It's okay Sans...I've got you...You're safe...It's gonna be alright..." He calmly whispered, but Sans sobbed harder and uncontrollably into Papyrus's shirt. "There there...it's alright..." Papyrus soothed, "Don't cry...shhhhhhh..." Sans was still trembling as he sobbed. "Shhhhhh...shhhh...hush Sans...shhhh..." The comforting shushes were calming Sans down a little, but he was still crying into Papyrus's shirt. "Shhhhhh...hush now dear brother...no more crying...shhhhhhhh..." Sans's sobs has quiet down into soft cries and he stopped trembling, but he was scared to go back to sleep. Papyrus then decided to quietly sing to help Sans feel less scared.

"Shh...shh..." He softly shushed as he began rocking gently to lull Sans to sleep.

"You are my Sans-shine...my only Sans-shine...you're very punny...even I hate it...you'll always know dear...how much I love you... please don't take...my Sans-shine away..."

Papyrus continued to repeat it softly as Sans looked up at him. He wasn't crying anymore, but tears still streamed down his tear-stained face. With his brother soothingly rubbing his back, rocking him back and forth comfortingly, and softly lulling him in the most calming way, Sans felt much more safer than he's ever been. He gently smiled a little as his grip lessened to regularly hug him. His eye sockets dimmed a bit as he was starting to fall asleep in his brother's arms. Papyrus looked down to see that he'd stopped crying, but was about to fall asleep from the lullaby. "Aww..." He gently whispered.

Sans let out a quiet yawn as he was almost asleep. Papyrus decided that he would be much more safer with him in case he had another nightmare. So he got up, while holding Sans, and carried him to his room. When the brothers were in the room, Papyrus gently laid his brother down onto his bed, which felt soft and safe for him, resting his head onto one of the soft pillows, and laid himself down next to him. He then covered him and his brother up with his blanket, which was also soft and comfortable, and tucked it in to keep themselves warm and cozy. He then looked down at Sans, who was now fully asleep, quietly and softly snoring, and gently held him close to make him feel even more safe.

2:37 am.

Papyrus rubbed Sans's back and held his head close to his shoulder, so he would know that he was there with him in case he had another nightmare, and softly kissed his skull. "Goodnight brother...I love you..." He calmly whispered to him. As he also fell asleep, both of the brothers were holding each other close, sleeping peacefully for the rest of the night, without any nightmares.
