The boy opened his eyes, he immediately felt a rush of panic as he couldn't remember anything. He got back on his feet quickly and realized he was in an endless plain.
The ground was the color of sand but had the consistency of tile. The sky was dark as night with a single light illuminating the sky, brighter than the moon when it's full.
Where am I? He thought to himself.
Who am I?
In the distance he saw someone laying on the ground. A small girl with chestnut hair wearing a sailor uniform. He picked up his feet and pumped his arms and ran as fast as he could. After a few seconds he lost his footing and smacked shoulder first straight into the ground. He let out a wheeze and got right back up and approached the girl.
He knelt down to her and shook her until her eyes started to flutter. As soon as the girl focused on the boy her eyes whipped open and she sat in an upright position.
"Who are you?" She asked. The boy just shook his head. He was still stunned by the girl, he recognized her but had no idea where from.
The girl's eyes darted around as she frantically tried to gather her bearings enough to stand up.
"I don't know this place but it feels familiar." She turned and looked at the boy. "I also don't know you but you look..."
He started to interrupt. "I think we know each other." The girl nodded and started to smile a little.
"I think we may be friends." The girl said as she took the boy's hand and gestured for him to walk with her. "Maybe there are more of us here."
The boy nodded and the two started to walk. Time did not seem to move in this place, they were walking for what felt like ages but at the same time it also felt like a fleeting moment.
The boy held on to her hand tightly. "I hope we find others soon, and maybe we can figure out how to get out of here." Slight panic started to creep up inside both of them. What if there was no way out of this plain? What if this was their new existence?
"Do you think we're dead?" The girl asked. The boy was taken aback. He hadn't even thought about that possibility, after the question his mind started to wander.
"I'm not sure." Was all he could muster. The girl looked down at the ground as they continued walking. She was trying to act calm just like the boy, but the boy could tell she was starting to feel very uneasy.
"I don't think we are dead." He started to say just to cheer her up. "Maybe we are in a dream or in some kind of stasis." the girl started to perk up.
"Stasis." She started to ponder the possibility. The idea sounded better than death to her and she wanted to keep her attitude away from her bleak thoughts.
Besides, if we were dead I think we would still have our memories. She thought.
The pair continued to think silently as they trudged along on their endless walk. Still gripping each others hands tightly, the two saw something incredibly far in the distance. As soon as the girl saw something she immediately stopped walking and the boy followed suit. The thing in the distance started to get closer very quickly. It seemed to be a figure coming at them with intense speed.
"Run!" The girl shrieked as she did a 180 and started to run as the boy followed close behind her. Only moments later a massive force pushed the pair onto the ground.
"Who are you?" A dry female voice asked them. "And where are we?" She was holding both of their heads to the ground so that neither of them could look up and see her. The girl was shaking violently and started to sob as the assailant started putting more pressure on her skull. The boy's heart was pounding with adrenaline as he watched the girl in pain.
"We don't know who we are or where we are either, please let us go we can help each other figure this out." Even though he was terrified he was able to let out his words calmly and concisely.
Am I always this calm and collected under pressure?
Their attacker let her hands off their heads and they stood up. The boy and girl also stood up after a few seconds and all three of them studied each other. Their attacker wore the same uniform as the girl, only with a black cardigan draped over it. She was taller than the girl but not taller than the boy and wore large glasses and donned a pixie cut.
The boys eyes widened as he finally thought of a name.
"Nagato?"
