A/N: So, with the release of the Bad Batch TV series today (I am starting this on May 4), I am not so much wary about the direction I take this, but slightly confused. I won't say anything about the first episode in the case I end up posting this today on my Wattpad, but for those that have seen it, you may know why I am confused on how to proceed. The reason is I had plans to bring the bad batch into this story, and with how pretty much the entire episode went. From the first few minutes to the ending. Well. I'll leave it there. I'm going to try and write every day, but I might end up waiting on new Bad Batch episodes before making certain chapters. With that being said, for my fanfiction viewers if I stay at least two weeks ahead on chapters, I will post twice a week. Those days will be Sunday and Wednesday. As of now I am about two chapters ahead, so unless I write two chapters in the next three days this will probably start next week.
"WHAT?!"
Day 1, 4 BBY
Staring at the datapad in shock is all I can do until Kanan brings me out of it, "Ezra, you just released raw emotions so powerful into the force, any force sensitive in the galaxy would have been able to feel it. Because of that we'll need to leave after the mission tonight. Ezra, you have incredible potential, I would honestly ask if your father was Anakin Skywalker, but you don't really look like him."
I shake my head quickly, "No, my father was not Anakin Skywalker. Alright I'm officially having a mental breakdown. I uhm. I need to go for a walk or something."
I hear laughter so I look up. And of course, Sabine and Emily are rolling on the floor laughing.
"What are you two laughing about?"
Emily manages to bring herself together first, "Your reaction. I figured you would have been excited, but the first thing out of your mouth was, 'No, my father was not Anakin Skywalker.' How can anybody not laugh at that?"
Standing up I look over to Kanan and Hera who are trying to process this information, "Alright, I uhm. I really don't know what to say."
Kanan brings his hand up to his chin, "Well, we can start by talking about what you do know regarding the force and lightsaber combat. I've seen you practicing a few times and I would like to discuss the forms you're using."
I nod, "All right, common room?"
Kanan agrees and looks over to the others, "If you are interested in the topic you can sit in, but don't interrupt. Emily, you and Ezra are siblings, so I'd actually like to run this test on you as well. With that kind of strength in Ezra, you could be force sensitive and not know it."
Emily ponders it for a moment, "Our parents seemed to know that Ezra was force sensitive. Pretty much said it was only him. If you want to run it that's fine, but I doubt I am. I'm perfectly fine being Mandalorian."
I chuckle as Kanan responds, "That's fine. It won't take long, and it will help my sanity a bit right now."
Everybody laughs as Kanan tests Emily's blood. A few minutes later Kanan gets the results and furrows his brow at it, "Well, you aren't force sensitive, but you do have a slightly higher Midichlorian count than normal at 3,500. It's pretty common for that to happen to people who are related to force sensitives though."
Emily picks up her helmet and nods, "I figured as much. Plus, that stuff is much to complicated for me to even want it."
I lead the way out as we head to the common room. Hera walks off to the cockpit to do some maintenance on the Ghost, but Emily and Sabine stay with Kanan and I.
As we sit down, I look over to them, "You guys sure you want to hear this? It'll probably be pretty boring."
Sabine nods, "When I grew up, I was taught that the Jedi were our biggest enemy. But, after I found out that Kanan is a Jedi and you were learning to be one as a Mandalorian, I couldn't help but question it. I want to know why our people fought, and maybe I can learn a thing or two about my supposed enemy while we're at it."
Emily smiles, "Me and Ezra were raised to support the Jedi. We didn't know it until recently, but our father was actually a Jedi Knight. He fell in love with a Mandalorian and had us. I'm here to support Ezra. Plus, if I know what he's going to do before he does it, I might be able to help him on missions."
Kanan smiles at them both, "That's good thinking from both of you. Now Ezra, can you grab the things you've been learning with quickly. It would help me understand just how far you've come."
I nod and move off to my room. While there I decide to leave my helmet and grab the Jedi Holocron and the book I've been using. Kanan doesn't need to know about the Sith holocron.
I walk back out and set both the holocron and the book on the table before Emily looks up at me with raised eyebrows, "Is that all you've been using?"
I quickly nod and ignore the question, but she doesn't relent, "Ezra. If you're going to do this, you need to do it the right way. Go grab that red one and bring it out here."
I sigh and return back to my room. Figured she wasn't going to let that slide.
Returning with the Sith holocron and the recorder my father left me, I set them both down on the table.
Kanan's eyes go wide at the sight of the Holocron, "Ezra, is that a Sith holocron?"
I nod, "It was one of the things my father left me. You'll probably find some things written in the book or spoken from the Holocron that I'll need to explain, but we'll get to that later."
Kanan nods, "So this is where your darker tendencies come from?"
Sighing I look down, "Ya, ever since Em got injured on a mission, I've been using it to get stronger. I know I shouldn't, but it just feels so right."
Kanan's eyes narrow, "Ezra, what was your father's name?"
"Ephraim Bridger."
His hand comes to his chin as he thinks, "There are tales that date back to the days of the old republic. They pretty much say that the descendant of a Sith Lord, has the dark side rooted in them naturally. That it flows through them naturally. Do you know of your ancestry?"
I look over to Emily who gives a small smile and nod, "Yes I do. You'll probably figure it out by looking at the inside cover of that book, but in case you can't I have a holo recording that explains it. Before you do that let me grab a couple more things."
I run back to my room and open the crate. Grabbing the four lightsabers that are in there I quickly run back into the common room.
Once Kanan sees me he opens up the book and reads the paragraph written on the inside cover. As he does that, I set the four lightsabers down, and take the two hidden ones out of my armor.
I connect them so it once again looks like Satele's lightsaber and set it next to the others.
Kanan looks from the paragraph to the lightsabers and back again, a few times.
He finally looks up at me, "Does this mean, what I think it means?"
I give a small nod and he laughs, "That explains a lot actually. Well, I guess we should start with what you do know."
Sabine quickly interrupts, "I know I said I wouldn't interrupt, but what's going on?"
"Maybe this would clear some things up."
As I say that I activate the holodisk on the table.
"Ezra, if you're listening to this then your mother and I unfortunately met an untimely end. Sadly, with the visions I have been having recently I believe this to be true. It's time you understand your heritage, Ezra. Your true heritage. Yes, your mother was mandalorian, but when you were born, I sensed something big in you. At a young age I taught you that the Jedi were not evil like the Empire proclaimed. This is because I myself was a Jedi Knight. I did not have the gifts of our ancestors, but you do Ezra. Inside this crate you will find everything you need to learn about your ancestry. To put it simply you are the descendant of the prodigal knight, Revan. The first in history to be attuned to the force in the way he was. What makes you even more special is your mandalorian heritage. Your mother's family line goes all the way back to Shae Vizla, including Tarre Vizla the only mandalorian in history to become a Jedi. You and your sister are both descendants of Revan, Bastilla Shan, Satele Shan, and previous Mandalore's such as Tarre and Shae Vizla. Your mother and I see both you and Emily doing incredible things, but Ezra, you have an amazing gift. A Jedi became a Padawan at the age of fourteen, and because I was unable to teach you the basics before then the items inside this crate will help you understand and learn to use that gift. Use it well. Use it to do good and help those in need like your mother and I taught you. We love you son and will always be with you. Never forget that."
I grab the holodisk as it finishes, "My ancestor was both a Jedi and a Sith lord. Up until recent events he was the most powerful in history on both sides of the war."
Sabine looks shocked, "If you're a descendant of Tarre, then you could make a claim for the throne."
I shake my head, "No, I'm not known enough throughout Mandalore. Hell, I don't really even have a clan."
Emily sadly nods, "He's right. I only wear Vizla colors because my mother wore them. Neither of us are actually Vizla's."
Sabine holds up a hand, "You could start your own clan. Technically Emily would be the countess, as she's the eldest, but that paves the way for Ezra to claim the throne. Then we could reunite and save all of Mandalore."
I laugh at that, "Mandalore is under complete Imperial lockdown. Where would we find an army to get rid of that. Plus, the darksaber hasn't been seen since Maul was kicked off Mandalore fifteen years ago!"
Sabine huffs, "It's a start, that's what matters. We can put this on the back burner for now, but seriously guys there's something to that."
Kanan just sighs, "All right, you guys can talk about that later. Right now, we need to discuss how much Ezra knows."
He opens up the holocron to sift through what I've learned so far, "All right, Ezra. Let's talk lightsaber combat. I'm getting a general idea of what you know force wise from the holocron, but how are you doing in lightsaber skills?"
"Well, my lightsaber has a pretty unique design. I can use one lightsaber, two lightsabers, or a double-bladed lightsaber. My main focus is on learning Niman, but I want to know Makashi and Shien as well. Niman is primarily double bladed, so the other two are for when I'm not using it in its double-bladed form."
Kanan looks visibly confused at that, "What do you mean Niman is primarily double bladed? You can use it with one lightsaber, two lightsabers, or a double-bladed lightsaber."
My eyes widen, "Really? My book only goes over the double-bladed variant."
Kanan nods, "Sure, my holocron has the other variations with it. It'd do you better than Makashi or Shien would. In fact, your ancestor used Niman primarily to enable him to use the force as well. A good duelist doesn't just rely on his lightsaber. He relies on the force, his lightsaber, and his mind."
He opens up his holocron to show me the other variations, "To be able to think while fighting is a skill not many have. There are three edges to a lightsaber duel and one of those is the mind. If you can outthink your opponent, you've won a third of the battle. Then it comes down to mastery of the form and mastery of the force. If somebody masters one of these, they can be a skilled duelist, but to master all three, puts you in the history books."
As I watch through the single saber kata he continues, "Niman is an amazing form for multiple reasons. The fact that it's a generalist form means there are no major weaknesses. Because of that it doesn't have any major strengths, but that doesn't matter. If a Niman user has mastery of the form along with mastery of the force and mind, they can be near unstoppable. The variations and unpredictability of the attacks, the iron wall defense, and the ability to unleash devastating force attacks makes it one of the strongest forms. It's difficult to master but knowing your bloodline I doubt that will matter."
I smirk at that, "So basically, drop Shien and Makashi, and go all in on Niman?"
Kanan nods, "Exactly, I'll help you spar in a little bit to see how far you've come but let's get your force abilities clear first."
I grab the holocron he left on the table, "It started me off with basic things. Meditation, telekinesis, pushing, pulling, connecting with other living beings, and precognition. The uhm, the Sith holocron wanted to teach me things like choking, force lightning, force storms, death fields, and stuff like that. I didn't actually go that far."
Kanan shakes his head and grins, "Do you want me to hang onto the Sith holocron, so it's not tempting you with its power?"
"Does it not try to tempt you?"
He shakes his head again, "Not really. I was trained as a Jedi for to long to give into those types of temptations. Plus, it can feel the natural pull of the dark side in you."
Nodding I give him the go ahead, "I don't know. I'll hang onto it, but not use it."
Kanan looks conflicted about it but lets it pass, "All right. Let's get started."
Kanan pulls a couple mats from the closet and sets them on the floor. Looks like we're starting out with meditation.
A few hours later Kanan has put me through a variety of tests to figure out exactly where I'm at, and by the end of it he has a baseline to go off of.
"Ezra, you are powerful in the force. But you will only reach your potential through training, patience, and discipline."
I look up at him while he rolls his mat, "Kanan, you said the dark side was naturally in me, right?"
Kanan nods and gestures for me to go on.
"Well, if I'm stronger or better with the dark side, is there a way for me to use it good?"
He sighs and puts the mat away before coming over and laying a hand on my shoulder, "Ezra, while the dark side gives way to power, it's ultimately a trap. By using the dark side you are disobeying the force's will. There is no way to do that and use it for good. By using the force as it wills, we stay on the light side of the force."
I let out a frustrated huff, "I don't know, the dark side just felt so right whenever I used it or felt it."
Guiding me towards the ramp Kanan quickly explains, "That's because you have Revan in you. You are his descendant; you have his blood. I know you said blood doesn't matter to Mandalorians, but when it comes to the force, you have the blood of one of the most powerful Sith lords in you. It's going to naturally pull you to the dark side. It will be a struggle, but you will do better to stay on the light side."
I nod but don't truly believe him.
If something feels right, it is right.
My instincts have never been wrong before. There must be a way to use the dark side without losing yourself.
It gave too much power, too much strength to not be right.
Right?
A/N: Hope you guys enjoyed Empire Day! There will be another time jump next chapter as we will be moving to Fire Across the Galaxy, and Ezra's confusion with the dark side is not going to end anytime soon.
