Chapter 6- Fallout
Tahiti
The Zephyr landed on the ground as Mack, Fitz and Simmons walked out to see Coulson sitting alone on the beach, deep in thought.
"Sir?" Mack called out.
Coulson looked up at them and rubbing his chest said. "May. She's gone. Turned to dust."
Both Fitz and Simmons had tears running down their cheeks at that. Seeing that, Coulson staggered up and hugged them as they broke down in his embrace.
After a few minutes, they were done.
"Normally, I'd be happy to see you, Fitz." Coulson said gently as he put a hand on the younger man's shoulder, "But right now, I don't know what to say."
"Yo-Yo is gone too." Mack said sadly as Coulson sighed, "Along with Piper and Davis, Deke. And Daisy."
Coulson felt a stab in the heart on hearing Daisy was among the victims.
"What should we do?" Jemma asked finally, wiping her tears.
"It's happening around the world." Mack said, "It's worse than anything we've faced before."
"I've never seen anything like this before." Coulson said before turning to Mack and giving him a nod, "Well, Director Mackenzie, there's work to be done."
Wakanda
After the cleanup had been done, all had retired to the palace, other than Willow who Buffy had seen walking off, looking out of it completely as she'd muttered. "Must do it, must do it."
Buffy was now in her room, curled up as she wanted to just break down when she heard a knock on the door and looked up to see Spike standing there.
He walked to her and asked. "So, how are you?"
"How do you think?" Buffy asked, looking up at him.
"Not good I'm sure, your old man just got dusted, so did bug boy", Spike quipped, pacing around.
"How can you sound so casual about this all?" Buffy asked, not able to keep what she'd been feeling about this in after what had just happened.
"No soul, remember?" Spike asked. "I really have no reason to be sad, well, other than the fact that now my food is half of what it used to be, not that I could get it anyway since I have this in my head."
He gestured to his head, clearly referring to the chip.
Now that was it for Buffy!
In a rage, she rushed him and gave him a hard punch on the face, sending him staggering back as he held his face in shock.
She'd never hit him once after they had started their relationship, and he hadn't tried to hit her either.
"How could I even be with you?" Buffy scoffed angrily as Spike looked at her with wide eyes, now finally realizing how horrible and insensitive he'd sounded. "You are everything I'm supposed to hate. The chip didn't make you a good person, just tamed you."
Spike started. "Buffy I'm-"
"Don't you care?" She screamed at him as he looked guilty. "Wait, you don't, you never will, you only ever cared about getting into my pants."
"That's not-"
"Get out!" She screamed, and a guilty looking Spike turned around and walked off. "It's over between us."
Spike walked out, passing past Steve who was walking there, and clutched his fists angrily. Not at Buffy, rather at himself. What was wrong with him? He had kept her sister's identity safe for her, and had cared about her mom, yet he couldn't care much when HALF of all life had dusted.
What was he now?
Buffy looked at her hammer, remembering when she had used it and Peter had lifted it, but now he wouldn't lift a thing again. Giles would never advise her again, Anya wouldn't put her foot in her mouth again, and Tara would never be the sweet, warm and comforting presence she was again.
In a rage, she tossed her hammer away to a corner, breaking some of it.
"Buffy."
She turned to see Steve standing there.
"I don't deserve that hammer, or any friends, we call ourselves heroes, yet fight a losing battle", Buffy scoffed as she turned away. "We lost, and now they're all gone."
"It's not over yet, Buffy", Steve told her. "Thanos is still out there, we have a chance to undo this."
"We'll just lose again, we're down by half now!" Buffy snapped. "Thanos is the one enemy we can never beat! I was warned about him, and I failed!"
"I can't believe that, I won't", Steve said firmly.
"Then you can go to hell", Buffy said as she sat down. "It's over. We lost."
Dawn was curled up in a ball, the deaths of Peter and Tara still fresh in her mind, and there was no Willow to comfort her either. Then there was a knock as she saw Xander standing in the doorway.
She didn't say a word as he walked in and sat next to her, hugging her, and she hugged him back as both broke down over their losses.
Steve found Thor and Bruce sitting together glumly and sat nearby.
"Cap." Bruce greeted glumly.
"Bruce. Thor." Steve simply said as he sat down with them.
"I failed!" Thor moaned, "I…..I should have gone for the head!"
"You weren't thinking clearly, happens to all of us", Steve assured him.
"And now half of all life is gone!" Thor snapped as lightning flashed outside for a second. Seeing that, he calmed down slightly before sitting back down, his head in his hands.
"How's Nat?" Bruce asked and Steve winced.
"Not good", Steve said simply.
After Bucky's death, she had done something Steve had never seen her do- have a complete breakdown and cry.
"Barnes", Bruce then asked. "Were he and Nat-"
"Yeah", Steve nodded lowly. "I don't know the details but they had a past, and I've never seen them happy before."
"I'm sorry Cap", Bruce said and Steve just nodded.
"Me too", he simply said.
Later, night time
Spike was standing outside, holding his blanket to his side. "What have I done? Why do I feel? What has she done to me?"
He then muttered to himself. "Why do I feel this way?"
"Love's a funny thing, bub."
He turned to see Logan standing there.
"Is that what it is?" Spike wondered to himself.
"Well, if this is how you're behaving, probably", Logan shrugged.
Spike snarled. "You know, everything used to be so clear. Slayer. Vampire. Vampire kills Slayer, sucks her dry, picks his teeth with her bones. It's always been that way. I've tasted the life of two Slayers. But with Buffy..." Spike grimaced in anguish. "It isn't supposed to be this way!"
He was angry now. "It's the chip! Steel and wires and silicon." He sighed. "It won't let me be a monster." He quietly muttered. "And I can't be a man. I'm nothing."
"That's why you're off, aren't you?" Logan asked as Spike looked at him in shock. "I can tell, I've gone off many times myself. You wanna change things and be something, don't you?"
"Yeah", Spike nodded.
"I was a monster too before I became a man", Logan muttered to him. "If you choose to be a man, good for you."
He then growled, unleashing his claws. "If you choose to be a monster, I'll be there to stop you, bub."
"Fair enough", Spike shrugged as he walked off. "Get nice and comfy, Slayer. I'll be back. And when I do ... things are gonna change. As long as the guy is still around and not dust. Bloody Hell!"
Same time, Sunnydale, Magic Box
Willow entered the shop, having seen the chaos that had been outside. The bastard had messed up her home, and he had taken Tara! He'd pay!
Willow gestured with her head. All the books on the loft shelves began to fly off the shelves and onto the table, landing heaped all over the table. The last book landed opened to a middle page.
Willow walked over to the table and looked down, then lifted her hands and put them on the open pages. Her hands sank into the book as if melding with it. The words of the book started to move off the pages and up her arms, curling and scrolling up under her sleeves.
The words were also coming up her chest, and moving up her shoulders to her face. She lifted her head and her eyes were black now. The words moved to the top of her head and into her hair, turning her hair black.
Willow lifted her hands off the book. The pages were now completely blank. Willow's face with eyes was completely magic-black and her hair also dark black and moving in a nonexistent wind.
"That's better."
Yes, Spike went off to do what you all think. Now is it as strong a motivation as 6x19? Definitely no! Probably not even that strong of a motivation. But come on, that was a bad move in the show, I didn't wanna do it here!
Also, here, their relationship wasn't violent the way it was in Season 6. Toxic still, but not violent, so Buffy hitting him after they were a thing actually shocked Spike.
And while being callous over half the world dying and then being reprimanded by Buffy for it isn't as strong a motivation as 6x19, I feel much better writing it because I love Season 7 Spuffy, and this is a non-controversial way of getting to it.
I even had a thought for a bit of Thanos returning Spike's soul with the Soul Stone to torment him based on a Chunk127's comment, but that's something comics Thanos would do, not MCU Thanos.
So yes, while not the strongest motivation, please just roll with it.
As for Willow, she never fell into magic addiction here, and while Tara's death has devastated her, it's not the only thing that has driven her over the edge. The reason will be revealed soon later.
For now, Dark Willow is here!
Anyway, hope all enjoyed (or not) and see you all next time with another chapter. Stay safe from the coronavirus ya all!
