Hey, guys! This is chapter 6! Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 6: The World Will Know

The next few months were very busy. Jack had never known such a crazy world existed: the world of wedding planning. Jack still sold newspapers and drew cartoons, but when he wasn't, well, he had to answer endless questions about flowers, food, or fancy clothing. It was completely new territory.

On this particular Saturday, Jack was helping Katherine decide what flavor of cake they wanted to have at their wedding. They spent a long time at Mr. Bale's, the local bakery, trying to choose between vanilla, chocolate, almond, lemon, raspberry, and strawberry-flavored cake. It was quite the treat- and all of the flavors were so incredible.

Currently, the pair was tasting the lemon cake. Jack's eyes grew very large as he bit into it. He glanced sideways at Katherine. Her eyes were just as big.

"Too sour." they said at the exact same moment. They both laughed and set the lemon cake slices aside. Next came the chocolate. Katherine and Jack both bit into the cake at the same time. And, wow, was it moist and delicious.

"This is it!" the pair exclaimed at the same time. And then it was sold. Just another item they could cross off the to-do list. Jack and Katherine pre-ordered a three-layered chocolate cake.

Next, they had to go to R. H. Macy and Company's Department Store to buy Jack a nice jacket for tomorrow. Pastor Raymond of the local church, who was a friend of Katherine's, had asked if she and Jack would speak of their engagement at the end of the church service. Katherine had said yes, and so she and Jack were now in the department store, scaling through the racks of overcoats, trying to find the right one for Jack.

"This one, Jack?" Katherine pointed out a cream-colored jacket with black buttons.

"Um, no thanks. I thinks I want one a little darker-colored." Jack said. After all, it's not like he got new clothes every day; he wanted to choose carefully.

"Okay..." Katherine disappeared behind a rack. "How about this?" she held up a black straight jacket.

"I like it... But... I think it looks too much likes a wedding jacket, don't you?" Jack smiled.

"Oh, yeah. Wait a minute..." Katherine scanned the supply of jackets. Finally she selected a smooth navy-colored jacket with cream buttons. "This?"

Jack's eyes lit up. "That's great!"

"All right, then! Let's go!" Katherine held the jacket on one arm, and offered Jack her other, which, of course, he gladly took.

By the time Jack and Katherine arrived at her front porch, the sun was quite low in the sky. Jack smiled. "I'll see you soon." he leaned in for a kiss- but Katherine's finger stopped him.

"No. You'll see me tomorrow- for church. You are coming, right?" Katherine stuck her hands on her hips sassily.

"Yeah. Of course I is." Jack grabbed her hands and swung them back and forth. "I is a little scared- to speak in front of those people, I means." Jack said, embarrassed.

"Aw, don't be! You can follow my lead." Katherine smiled. Jack was so cute when he was vulnerable.

"Okay. Thanks." Jack said, grateful. Then he raised an eyebrow. "Now do I get my kiss?"

Katherine laughed, grinning. "Yes." she pulled Jack's vest toward herself and kissed him. When she pulled away, she tilted his Newsie cap and said, "Goodnight, Mr. Kelly. I love you."

"Goodnight, Plumber. I love you too." Jack quickly bent down and kissed Katherine again before she could think. Then he jumped backwards off the porch and straightened his cap. He smiled and smacked his chewing gum.

"Jack, you sly dog!" Katherine shook her head.

"Oh, come on, you know you like it. Don't pr'tend you don't." Jack smiled.

Katherine laughed, and was glad that it was dark so that Jack couldn't see her blushing, because, well, he was right. "Okay, okay, I'll see you tomorrow, Jack." smiling, Katherine quickly bustled inside.

And Jack knew what that laugh had meant, of course. He could practically feel himself blushing as he sprinted off to the Jacob's apartment. He loved Katherine so much.

The next morning, Jack woke up extra early and dressed himself up as best he could. He brushed his teeth and combed his hair. Once he was finished, he slid down the metal ladder and was on his way to church.

Jack was used to running everywhere; but he walked today because he didn't want to mess up his new jacket.

Still, it didn't take too long before he saw the church up ahead. He quickly straightened his jacket and continued on. And, who, but Katherine (Plumber) Pulitzer, would happen to be strolling right in front of him?

Jack, mischievous as ever, snuck up and hugged Katherine tightly from behind. "Mornin', gorgeous!"

Katherine squealed, before realizing who it was. She spun around. "Jack! You scared me!" Katherine swatted his arm, even though she was smiling.

"Sorry." he smiled, and leaned in to kiss his fiance. But she backed away, her eyes wide.

"Hey, I don't smell that bad, do I? I's cleaned up." Jack said, only half-joking.

That's not what Katherine had meant, though. She mouthed, Behind you.

Uh-oh.

"Hello, Mr. Kelly. It is nice to see you." Joe Pulitzer's tight voice said.

Jack gulped. He really hoped Joe hadn't just seen him hug Katherine like that. He slowly turned around. "Hello... Mr. Pulitzer."

"I am very... happy... for you and your recent engagement. Congratulations. Both of you." Joe smiled- or, he tried to. It looked more like a scowl.

Jack nodded. "T-Thank you."

There was a little awkward silence as Joe straightened his overcoat.

Then to Jack's (and Joe's, for that matter) relief, Katherine said, "Thank you, Father! See you later!" and grabbed Jack's arm. She spun him around and began walking him towards the church. "Let's go! The service is about to start!"

At the end of the sermon, the preacher announced, "Today, I would like to welcome up a recently engaged couple, Katherine Pulitzer and Jack Kelly!"

The congregation clapped a welcome for the two as they stepped up to the stage. Katherine began. "Hello, everyone. Jack Kelly and I were engaged about five weeks ago, and we plan to be married on November fifth. You might be thinking ''They haven't known each other for very long", and, well, that's true. But we know that love can come in unexpected places." Katherine then used her eyes to tell Jack, Your turn.

He swallowed. "Katherine and I might be very different, but, well, that's what makes us so great together. So, if any of you's is interested, you is welcome to come to our wedding. It's goin' to be here at the church, with the reception at the Pulitzers' house. Thank you." Jack nodded.

The crowd stood up and clapped. Jack exhaled a sigh of relief. That actually wasn't so hard. As the people in the church began to disperse, Katherine pulled Jack off the stage and whispered, "You were great, sweetie!" Then she smoothed the sleeves of jacket. "And you look so cute!"

Jack laughed. "Thanks." As they strolled out of the church together, side by side, he said, "I's can't wait for the wedding, Kath."

Katherine laced his fingers between her own and leaned on his shoulder. "Me either, Jack. Me either."

All right! That's chapter 6! Thanks for reading!

Also, I was informed that Macy's was called R.H. Macy's and Company in 1899, so, yeah, same store, just different name.

On to the next chapter! I hope you will like it...
