It's a lazy Sunday afternoon, Emily's favorite kind.
They had just made it home late last night from their most recent case in Tennessee where they had been able to catch the unsub who had been raping and torturing women for the past few weeks. It had been a quick case, though not an easy one.
Emily had woken up just a few hours earlier to a sleeping JJ next to her. She hadn't wanted to disturb the blonde who looked so peaceful in her slumber. Instead, Emily had made her way downstairs to the coffee machine and enjoyed the quiet of the morning. Henry had come down about an hour after her, already dressed and ready for whatever was awaiting him that day. He had explained he was finally going to meet Claire's mom, and that they were going to brunch. While she hadn't been happy that Claire had gone behind her back and started dating when she was told she wasn't allowed to, she was slightly relieved when she had found out Henry was the child of two federal agents, a city detective and an ER nurse.
Emily had listened to him as he talked, smiling at his demeanor. He was nervous, she could tell, but she wasn't going to call him out on it. Instead, she let him talk away his anxiousness and eventually, he gave her a hug and a kiss and headed out the door.
The brunette found herself alone again, lost in her thoughts of the past few weeks. It felt like so much had happened in such a short time.
And those are the thoughts running through her mind when the sound of the key in the front door turning stirs her out of them. She stands and makes her way to the entry way, slightly on edge until she sees Will's figure crossing the threshold of the front door.
"Hey," he says casually closing the door behind him. "Sorry, I didn't want to wake you if you all were sleeping so I used my key. I know you got in late."
"Yeah, Jayje is still out cold," Emily replies motioning with her head for him to follow her into the kitchen. He smiles and does. "Everything okay?" she asks once they make it back to where her coffee is waiting for her at the table.
"Me? Oh, yeah. I just think I left my sunglasses here the other day. I've been looking for them everywhere and can't seem to find them," he explains as he starts to rummage through the junk piled up by the coffee pot. "Ah ha! Found them!" he says as he pulls them out from where they had been hiding. "You mind?" he asks as he puts the glasses on his shirt and motions with his head to the coffee pot.
"Help yourself," Emily smiles at him and he pours himself a cup and makes his way over to the table to sit next to her. "Where's Ash?"
Emily and JJ had immediately loved the brown haired woman that Will had brought home just two years after his split with JJ. She was smart and funny and kind. She also seemed to have no reservations about their strange parenting situation and instead, always praised the three of them for making things work the way they did. It was only about a month in when Emily realized that Ashley was the girl Will was supposed to be with and that she was the woman he was going to end up marrying. They did just that a year later.
Since then, the three women had become great friends. They bonded over Henry at first, but quickly that turned into a friendship of its own. They shopped together, had lunch and dinner's together when they could and texted and chatted regularly on the phone.
"Work," Will explains taking a sip of the coffee. "She wasn't supposed to be working today so I took the day off but they got slammed at the hospital so she had to go in for a bit."
"We know what that's like," Emily says with a chuckle and Will does the same, nodding.
"Hey, you know. I actually was hoping I could talk to you about something. Without JJ."
Emily's brow perks up as she watches the man next to her. Suddenly she flashes back to the first time he had ever said those words to her almost 12 years before.
JJ and Will had split up only about a month before and Emily was just starting to feel comfortable being in a relationship with the blonde in public. Sure, everyone on the team had suspected they had feelings for each other, but it was completely different now that it was official for everyone to see and know about. It had been hard on Emily, as she was afraid people would think she broke up JJ's marriage, but it only took a week for that worry to fade when no one said a single thing about it to her. However, having a conversation with Will was an entirely different thing.
He had stopped by a few times over that first month, mostly to pick up or drop off Henry. Every single time he had come and Emily had been there, she had practically run to hide somewhere in order to avoid him. She had been successful every time before. But just four short weeks after the split, Emily found herself surprised by Will when he stopped by to have a chat with her.
"Hey Em," he had said as she opened the door, surprised to see him looking back at her. She had thought it was the pizza guy delivering their food. JJ hadn't come back from the gym yet and Emily was waiting for her.
"Uh, hi," the brunette had responded not sure what to do in that moment. Henry was spending the night with Penelope and she knew Will had been aware of that. "JJ's not here, but she should be back soon," Emily said not sure of what other reason he could be there other than to talk to the blonde.
"Actually, I was hoping I could talk to you about something. Without JJ?" he asked.
"I guess," Emily replied opening the door wider for him to enter. Her heart started to beat at a very rapid pace inside her chest.
There was an awkward silence between them for several minutes in the entry way before Will ran a hand through his hair and laughed, easing the tension.
"This is kind of strange, isn't it?" he asked. Emily nodded and motioned for him to follow her to the living room where she had been lounging on the couch waiting for JJ to come home. He took a seat across from her and the silence continued for another stretch of time. Just as he opened his mouth to speak, Emily's words came flying out.
"Look I know you probably hate me and everything..."
"Whoa, hold on," Will said holding up and hand and stopping her from continuing. "Let me say this one time and one time only. I do not hate you. I could never hate you."
"You don't?" Emily asked surprised.
"No! I mean, hell, you've saved my life before. If anyone should hate anyone, you should hate me!"
"I'm sorry, I really don't understand," Emily said not following his logic considering she was the one who had been sleeping with his girlfriend behind his back.
"Em. I've known how you felt about JJ since the moment I met you. I saw it in your eyes, the way you probably saw it in mine. I was just lucky enough to get to her first. We both know it was you she always loved. I should have never tried to keep her for myself."
"You're serious right now?" Emily asked dumbfounded by his statement. JJ had told her exactly what he had said that night they split up and how amazing he had been about it even since. But she had never fully allowed herself to believe it until right in that moment.
"I am. I just wanted to come here and tell you that I don't want things to be like this anymore. Look, as far as I'm concerned, we are both going to be around for a long time. You with JJ and me because of Henry. I'd like for us to be, I don't know, friends maybe?"
"You want to be friends with your ex-girlfriends new girlfriend?" Emily asked knowing it sounded weird but not knowing what else to say.
He laughed at her words and nodded.
"I guess, if that's how you want to put it. Sure. I just think, no I know," he corrected himself, "that you are going to be not just a part of JJ's life, but Henry's too for the rest of my life. And that means you are going to be a part of mine too. I think it would be great for Henry and for JJ if we could make this easy and just be friends."
Emily considered his words, mulling them over.
"How do you do that?" she asked finally and he frowned at her, not understanding the question. "How can you be so cool with me after what I did, what we did to you?"
"Em, trust me it hurt when I realized what was going on right under my nose. But like I told JJ, I just want her to be happy. And you make her happy. What kind of guy would I be if I didn't wish that for the mother of my child?"
"A normal one?"
"Perhaps," Will says with a chuckle. "But I say we go against the norm and we do this different. Let's make this work so that we can all be happy. No more hiding from me when I come over, alright? What do you say?" he asked.
That had been the start of what became an amazing and beautiful friendship between them. Will was now one of the people that Emily knew she could count on no matter what and someone that she enjoyed spending time with whenever the opportunity arose. They often went out for drinks together and ended up chatting together at social events, both having similar interests and things to talk about.
"Em? You alright?" Will asks shaking Emily out of her thoughts again for the second time that day. "Did you hear what I said?"
"Yeah, um, you said you wanted to talk to me without Jayje."
"Sorry, I didn't mean to freak you out," he says with a warm smile and another sip of his coffee.
"No, it's fine. I was just remembering that first time we talked all those years ago. You know, after you and JJ had split and you showed up at her house. Pretty sure you said those exact same words to me."
"I did huh? Well, guess that turned out pretty good in the end. After all, everything worked out just like it was supposed to," he remembers.
"It really did, didn't it?" Emily asks smiling thinking about how wonderful a family life they have all been able to share together with Henry.
"Probably a little better than any of us could have imagined. I mean, you're one of my best friends Em," Will says with a smile as he reaches out and squeezes her hand in reassurance before letting it go quickly. "I mean that. Which is why I wanted to talk to you without her."
"Oh, I get it," Emily remarks. "This is the part where you tell me something in hopes that it will be me that tells JJ instead of you?"
"Damn profilers," Will exclaims laughing slightly. He turns serious pretty quickly though. "I just think it will come better from you."
"Is everything alright? Are you and Ashley…" Emily trails off, starting to get worried by the tone of his voice and the seriousness etched on his face.
"No! Me and Ash are just fine. Things are good. It's just well, it's a sensitive topic with Jen I know." Emily looks at him with a gaze he's seen so many times before. The 'spit it out' face. "Alright, I'm just going to come out and say it," he says trying to work up the courage to say what it is he had wanted to say. "I think…" a pause, "I think Henry and Claire are having sex."
The blank stare that followed from the brunette almost made Will regret choosing her to talk to about the subject first. For a split second, he thought Emily might actually vomit right there onto him before her face turned red and she shifted in her seat. It was that moment he started to think she was going to yell or scream or hell, maybe even punch him. Not that she would ever hurt him he knew, but still, the look on her face didn't give him much confidence in that moment.
Eventually the redness faded after the silence had stretched on much longer than Will had hoped or thought could be possible. The woman in front of him cleared her throat.
"What makes you think that?" The calmness in which the words came out didn't match her reaction and Will couldn't help but immediately laugh upon hearing them. That just made the redness reappear. "What's so fucking funny Will?"
"Nothin' Em," he says slowing his laughter. "You just said that so damn calm but you look anything but!"
"I'm sorry, but you just told me that my son is having sex with his girlfriend and you want me to look calm?" Emily asked, still not finding the humor in the situation.
She wasn't sure if she was really all that angry. She had been a teen the first time she had sex as well, not that that was a situation she wanted to relate to this one considering, but she did know that the thought of having to tell JJ this information scared the shit out of her. She had just barely gotten JJ to relax at the idea of her only son having a girlfriend, let alone having sex with her.
"Well I knew you would take it better than if I told Jen," Will responds as he continues to study the expression on Emily's face. She immediately frowns.
"Wait, you said you think they are having sex, not that you know they are. Maybe they aren't. What makes you think that?"
"Alright, the other day when you all were in Tennessee, I was cleaning up around the house and in Henry's room. I wasn't snooping or anything but I was just putting away some of his things and happened to notice a box of condoms hidden under his socks in the drawer," Will explains.
"Okay, alright," Emily says after hearing the story. "So he has condoms. I guess that's a good thing. But it doesn't mean he has already done anything. It could just mean he is thinking about…"
"I thought the exact same thing," Will interrupts shaking his head. "Of course, I knew as soon as I saw them in there I was going to have to have a talk with him. I mean, no offense, I know you and JJ are great parents but this kinda talk is really something he should have with his dad."
"I totally agree," Emily replies. When Will doesn't continue she presses. "So you talked to him about it and he told you they were having sex?"
"Not exactly," Will responds. "That night after dinner I took him out to get some ice cream so it could just be us guys. I found a way to bring it up, you know, the whole birds and the bees talk."
"And?"
"And he listened, but as I was talking to him I just got this feeling, you know? I think it was the look on his face. He wasn't embarrassed about what we were talking about, but more, he was trying to hide something."
"You think that something is that he has already…"
"If I had to guess, yeah. I mean, I was a teenage boy once and I certainly didn't have anyone to talk to me about it before I..."
"That's not helping Will," Emily remarks standing from her seat and starting to pace around the kitchen. He watches her as she moves back and forth, following her with his eyes.
"Now do you see why I wanted to talk to you about this without Jayje?" he questions and Emily stops mid stride and spins around to face him. "Look how you are handling this and then think about how she's going to. I figured, best to talk to you first so we can all be on the same page when we talk to her."
"I hate your logic sometimes," Emily says running a hand through her hair. "She's going to flip out." She pauses thinking about the reaction her wife is going to have and going through all the scenarios that might take place. "What did Ashley say?"
"I think she's skeptical. She doesn't really think anything has happened yet but I'm telling you Em, I know."
"This sucks," Emily replies. "I just got JJ to open up to the idea of Claire and now you want me to tell her that her baby boy is sleeping with her too?"
"Hey, if you want to talk to her by yourself, feel free!"
"No!" Emily exclaims watching Will start to chuckle again. "William LaMontagne, Jr., don't you dare try to back out of this with me. It's your discovery. Your assumption. Your conversation. Ash and I are just backup on this one."
"I had a feeling you were going to say that," Will says, finishing the last bit of his coffee and standing. He makes his way over to the kitchen sink where he rinses out the mug and places it neatly on the counter next to it. "I was thinking that maybe we plan a double date or something. I could bring it up then. Maybe if we are out in public she won't freak out as much."
"You and I both know that's not going to work. Plus, even if we thought it might, on the off chance it doesn't, neither of us wants to deal with her reaction in a public setting."
"True," Will says making his way to the door. "You all want to come over for dinner on Friday night? We could talk about it then? Ashley has the night off and I know Henry has a date with Claire."
"I'll talk to JJ and let you know, but I'm pretty sure that will work," Emily says as they reach the entrance to the house where Will had come in earlier. He reaches out and hugs the brunette quickly before turning to the door.
Emily's mind is still trying to process everything she's learned from this conversation. She knew she was going to have to do that internally before they talked to JJ so that she could keep her wife calm. When Will had asked to talk to her earlier, she would have never imagined that this was what he wanted to talk to her about.
But she can't help but remember the last time he had asked to talk to her alone. He had opened up to her and it was that honesty that led to the great relationship she had with him today.
"Alright, I'll text you later. Tell Jen I said hello," Will remarks as he starts out into the fresh air of the afternoon.
"Hey Will?"
"Yeah?" he asks, turning around as Emily stands in the doorway.
"You are a great guy, you know that? And a really great dad. I just wanted to say, thank you, you know. For everything. For trusting me with things like this and for always making me feel like I belonged here in this family with you."
"Come here," he says motioning for her to hug him once again and she smiles and allows him to wrap his arms around her. He squeezes her tight and she returns the gesture. "Thank you."
