They caught a case later in the morning, triple homicide and the team left for the scene leaving Hailey alone in the bullpen.
After spending the morning sitting next to Jay she welcomed the break. She was so nervous knowing he would be back today. Sure they had spoken every day and texted and she was dying to see him but she wanted her Jay. Not this Jay who didn't know her.
Still she could feel him looking at her and then she would stare at him when he wasn't looking. She had spoken to Will who assured her his memory loss wouldn't last but a week already felt like an eternity. She missed having him at home, his kisses, his scent, their dinners together. Her friends kept checking in on her and work kept her busy enough, but she still felt so alone.
So many times during the past week she was about to tell him about her pregnancy but it didn't feel right. Not even when he asked her to tell him about them she just couldn't do it. She was terrified this Jay was going to reject their baby and she knew that she couldn't tolerate. She was wishfully hoping he would regain his memories before she had to tell him about the baby.
Her phone beeped distracting her from her thoughts. It was Kevin sending her a picture of him and Jay in the car. Isn't this more fun than working with Platt? Don't worry I'll take care of him. Kevin knew too well how it was killing her not being out there with Jay. She sent him a quick reply. Thanks Kev.
She kept working on her stuff, desk duty wasn't as horrible as she had imagined, and Platt did have her digging through an old case for a possible wrongful conviction. She was so concentrated that she didn't realize it was already past 2pm until her stomach started growling. She had forgotten lunch and her baby was reminding her.
Seeing as the team wasn't back yet she went to the deli around the corner and got herself a sandwich which she ate in the breakroom while looking at funny pets videos on her phone. Something Adam had gotten Jay doing and Jay got her doing. It helped to laugh and forget about what's going on. She finished her sandwich and headed back to her desk. Shortly after Kevin and Jay came back.
"How did it go?
"Good. It's like riding a bike I guess I didn't forget how to work a scene."
"You better not. You learned from the best."
"Excuse you but I was already a detective when I me you."
"Its all about quality Jay." They were both cracking up at that. Their banter felt good.
All of the sudden she felt the now almost always present nausea and she felt her throat burning, her lunch threatening to come back up. She tried putting her head down, closing her eyes, inhaling exhaling but nothing.
Jay was suddenly standing next to her. "Hailey you okay?"
She couldn't answer, just pushed him aside and ran to the locker room and into the bathroom where she went straight to throw up all her lunch. She threw up two more times and each time it was like acid coming up, she was sitting in the ground without the energy to move. Her hands smelled and her breath was even worse. She heard footsteps and for a moment thought it was Jay. He would always hold her hair, bring her water and sit with her until she was ready to get up. But that was before. She looked up to see Vanessa with a bottle of water.
"Hey Hails. This baby is kicking your ass. Here." She handed me the water and knelt down beside me.
"I don't know why they call it morning sickness for me it any time of the day, basically whenever I eat."
"Did you tell your doctor that?"
"With all that's happened I haven't rescheduled my appointment. Ill give her a call."
"Hailey you have to take care of yourself and the baby. Jay is fine. Time to take care of you."
She nodded; she knew Vanessa was right. She slowly got up washed her face.
"By the way Halstead is out there. He asked me to come see what's wrong with you, he didn't feel comfortable coming in."
"Yeah why would he want to see a perfect stranger throw up."
"Give him a break the poor guy is al messed up. Back at the scene he kept looking around like a lost dog,"
"I know I know." I had washed my hands and face feeling a little back to normal and we both walked out sure enough Jay was waiting outside.
"Are you okay?
He looked worried. " I am good my lunch didn't agree with me." I kept walking before he asked any more questions.
The rest of the day was spent the usual way and thankfully 6 o'clock came quickly. She was exhausted. Between throwing up and not sleeping good she was ready to just head home and sit on the sofa until she fell asleep.
"Hailey Kevin mentioned I would always give you rides to work so I was wondering if you want a ride home."
"I have my car here."
"If you are worried about tomorrow, I could swing by and pick you up. I figured the more usual things I do the better for chances of getting my memories." That was true enough but the real reason he wanted to give her a ride was to spend more time with her. When she turned white and went to throw up he got worried, something deep inside him was pushing him to go to her and protect her. She looked tired and pale, and he wanted to make sure she got home okay.
"Sure." They walked in silence to his truck. " Do you need the address?"
"I remember the address. Do you want to get something to eat? I meat we could pick something up for you to take home."
"I really couldn't eat my stomach is still in knots from before. I just want to go home and try to sleep."
"Not sleeping good?"
"Not really I turn around and around. The bed is too empty without you." As soon as the words were out of her mouth she regretted them. She never held back when talking to Jay so she spoke without thinking. "I am sorry I didn't mean.."
"I got it Hailey. This is disrupting your life. I want more than anything to get all my memories back. Everyone walks around me knowing more about my life than me and I hate it."
"It will be over soon I'm sure." She held onto his hand and when he didn't pull back she didn't move until they reached their house. "Thanks for the ride."
"I'll see you tomorrow morning." She got off the truck and Jay found himself missing the warmth of her hand on his." Good night Hails." She looked at him and smiled. He called her Hails and it felt natural. Was this the beginning of him getting his memories? He sure hoped so.
Next morning, he was early picking her up. She looked better today. They spent the trip talking about Will and his relationship with Natalie. He didn't understand why his brother wasn't married already to Natalie but Will had dismissed him when he brought the subject up.
During the next few days he hadn't remembered anything but realized some things were feeling very normal and natural. He spent time with the team outside of work including Mackayla and tried to ask many questions. He had been driving Hailey to work most days and the time the two of them spent alone in the car was the best day of his day.
They were on their way to her house when he worked up the courage to ask her to dinner. "It's been a long day I was thinking we grab something to eat my treat?"
"Sounds good." She was actually starving since she hadn't eaten all day. She was actually scared to eat since almost every time she would throw up. She has scheduled an appointment with her obgyn next Friday and hopefully the doctor would be able to prescribe something. But she had to try and eat, she knew that.
"What are you in the mood for?"
"Bertollis?"
"That place is still around."
"Oh yeah, its one of our favorites places to go. When I came back to New York you took me to Bertollis the first night I was back, and it was incredible. They don't know what Pizza is over there."
"Ill take your word for it. Bertollis it is."
They were seated as soon as the arrived and their usual waiter was over in a minute to take the order. "Hey detectives hadn't seen you in a few weeks? The usual tonight?"
"Thanks Ethan the usual sounds good." Hailey was quick to answer.
"I'll be right back with your drinks."
"I guess we do come a lot if the waiter knows our order."
"At least once a week if not more. With our work schedule we don't really have time to cook a lot."
"Except when you make you Greek recipes. I love those."
It took a second to realize what he said and he didn't even seen to realize it. "Jay you remembered!"
"What? Oh my god I did. I can remember the taste." They were both laughing and without thinking he took her hand and kissed it.
"Here we are a beer for you and a lemonade for you. I almost brought you a beer but then remembered you are pregnant. By the way how are you feeling?"
"What? Hailey you are pregnant?"
