"What do we got, Connor?" Hank asked his partner in the passenger seat, driving down the streets of Detroit after being called for an emergency situation.
"Code 136. Hostage on the bridge. Two officers down." Connor responded quickly.
"Shit."
"Turn left here."
Hank turned left and the detectives saw the scene before them. An adult male was holding a young girl at gunpoint on the edge of a bridge. Two police cars were also parked on the bridge, and the officers were pointing their guns at the man. Hank parked his car and both detectives got out. They walked up to one of the officers to get some intel on the situation.
"Thank god you guys are here. We need Connor to get that girl away from her stepdad. He went crazy and pulled a gun on her after they got in an argument." The officer explained. Connor nodded and headed to the man and woman on the edge of the bridge. Hank stayed behind with the officers and had his gun at the ready just in case anything happened. The deviant carefully approached the man holding the hostage at gunpoint. The girl was sobbing and shaking in her captor's arms.
"It's going to be okay." He calmly told the girl. "What's your name?"
"E-Elena.."
Connor nodded. "Okay Elena, I just need you to stay calm for me-"
"Shut up! What's an android doing here anyway?" The man holding Elena snapped.
"My name is Connor. I am a part of the DCPD. What is your name?" The deviant asked the man.
"...Mike." He responded hesitantly. Hank and the other officers kept a close eye on Mike to make sure he didn't do anything to hurt Elena. They kept quiet so Connor could negotiate. "Mike, may I ask why you're doing this to your stepdaughter?"
The man glared at Connor. "She ain't part of my fuckin' family. Not anymore!" He held the gun closer to Elena's temple, causing her to scream and cry harder. "Shut up, you bitch!" Elena cried to quiet her cries, her chest stuttering with sobs.
"Listen, Mike. I want things to work out for everyone here. So, I'm here to ask you to let go of Elena. If you do, we can talk about what you want in return. Sound fair?" Connor negotiated.
Mike looked at the android incredulously. "Why the hell should I trust you?"
"I'm just an android. I have no reason to deceive. I just want to make sure no one gets hurt." Connor answered honestly. The man was hesitant, so Connor dared to take a step closer and reached out his hand to Elena. "Please...please let me go.." She was whispering shakily. Mike finally let go of her and she instantly ran into Connor's arms, sobbing with relief. Connor held onto her as he saw Hank slowly walk up to take Elena to where it was safe. She let go of Connor and frantically ran into Hank's arms, still crying hard and shaking. "I gotcha.. you're alright.." Hank soothed her, holding onto her as they walked over to the other officers. Connor took a careful step towards Mike and spoke calmly. "Okay Mike, now what-"
He was interrupted as Mike quickly grabbed him and held him at gunpoint. He was now the hostage.
"Connor!" Hank yelled, still holding Elena.
"I-I'm fine!" Connor yelled back, trying to stay calm. "Mike, you don't need to do this-"
"Shut up, you piece of plastic! I'm trying to think!" Mike seemed to be stressed, trying to think of a way to escape.
"Mike, we're giving you one chance to let Connor go. Don't make us open fire." One of the officers announced through a bullhorn. "Put the gun down. Now." Mike ignored the officer, too busy thinking of a getaway plan.
"Here's how we're gonna do this, you fuckin' robot.." He tightened his grip on the deviant's neck, causing Connor to wince in pain. "You're coming with me. Tell your buddies to put the guns down, and we're gonna go for a little ride." He smirked. "O-Okay. Fine." The android reluctantly agreed. he swallowed nervously before speaking.
"Everyone, put your-"
He was interrupted by the sound of a bullet whizzing past his head and into the skull of his captor. Blood showered Connor's face in a sickening crimson spray and Mike's arm around the android's neck tensed up even more as the life left his body in the blink of an eye. He was too shocked to notice that Mike was stumbling backwards, closer to the edge of the bridge.
"CONNOR!"
Hank's voice was the last thing the deviant heard before he and Mike fell off the bridge and into the piercing cold water below.
Darkness.
That's all he can see.
Mike's arm is still tight around his neck, ultimately choking him while frigid, black water starts to fill his artificial lungs. He tries desperately to break free of Mike's death grip, but it's no use. Connor realizes that he doesn't know how to swim. Even if he did, Mike's weight was dragging him down. He struggled, trying one more time to break free as he sank to the bottom of the river. Consciousness slipped away as he finally reached the bottom.
The group of officers on the bridge all ran down the bridge to the edge of the river, led by Hank. They all started searching the dark river for Connor. The sky was getting cloudy and was starting to rain; a cold wind blowing over the river. "Anyone see him?!" Hank called out, desperate to find his partner.
The minutes were beginning to feel like hours as Hank frantically looked for Connor. He was close to having a complete breakdown when one officer interrupted his thoughts. "I got him!"
The unconscious android was dragged out of the freezing river and onto the shore, along with his captor, who was dead before they hit the water. Hank ran to Connor and dropped to his knees beside him, starting off by prying Mike's cold, dead arm off of the android and moved it aside.
"Connor? Can you hear me?" Hank spoke loud and clear and lightly slapped Connor's cheek to try to rouse him. He didn't respond. The elderly detective knelt down to listen for the android's breathing, and his heart dropped when he heard nothing. "Shit."
Hank's emergency training kicked in and he interlaced his fingers, creating one single fist and starting chest compressions on Connor's chillingly still body. "Come on Connor, come on..." Hank pleaded under his breath as he continued to give CPR to the downed deviant. "Someone call an ambulance for the scumbag and a technician for Connor!" The gruff detective ordered. An officer took out his phone, following Hank's orders.
Hank started becoming desperate as Connor still wouldn't breathe. "Breathe son, come on!" He checked his breathing again and continued chest compressions. "Respond Connor, that's an order!"
Suddenly, Connor's eyes flew open, a gush of water escaping his lips. Hank quickly turned him on his side so he wouldn't choke. "Atta boy... let it out.." He kept a hand on Connor's shoulder as his deviant partner coughed up a large amount of water, his body starting to tremble from weakness and the biting cold. "Keep coughing to get all the water out." Hank instructed, his paternal instincts kicking in. The sound of an ambulance siren could be heard a few blocks away as they rushed to the scene. Connor continued to cough violently as more water painfully escaped his lungs. "H-Hank..."
"Don't talk son, save your strength. We need you to stay awake." Hank knew that Connor could potentially catch hypothermia in this biting cold wind, especially being soaking wet. The last thing he needed was for Connor to fall asleep.
"C-Cold.." Connor shivered violently, his voice hoarse from coughing. "Hurts..."
"I know you're cold, we're gonna warm you up in no time." Hank told him, carefully holding the android close to keep him warm. "What hurts?" He asked calmly.
"M-My chest.. and I c-can't feel my fingers.." The deviant answered shakily. Hank carefully took Connor's hand to examine his fingers. They were turning white and were starting to get frostbitten. "Alright, we'll get you warmed up. It'll be okay." He held the android's hands to keep them as warm as possible as the ambulance pulled up. "Help is here, son." Hank said, looking down at the freezing android in his arms. His eyes were slipping shut and Hank quickly shook Connor awake. "Keep your eyes open. Do not fall asleep, Connor." Hank ordered firmly. Connor nodded sluggishly and tried to keep his eyes open. "Tired..." He said faintly.
"I know, but you gotta stay awake a little bit longer." The detective told him, brushing Connor's wet dark hair out of his eyes. The exhausted and freezing deviant obeyed and stayed awake as the technician rushed over to them. Hank stood up and took a step back so the technician could care for Connor. He looked over at the paramedics that were lifting Mike's body into a body bag and onto a gurney to take into the ambulance. "Good riddance, you bastard." Hank muttered under his breath. All he did was cause trouble for everyone, especially his family. In the end, karma caught up with him.
"He's going to be okay, but he needs to get warm before he gets hypothermia. I bandaged his fingers and any other places that are close to being frostbitten." The technician told Hank. "I'll get him home." Hank replied, slowly helping Connor stand up. "Thank you." He added, and helped the frozen android walk to the car. "Come on son, let's get you home." The fatherly detective said softly, sitting his android partner in the passenger seat. Connor curled up in the seat, his body trembling. Hank turned on the car and blasted the heater to warm Connor up. "Try to get your hands and chest close to the heater to warm them up faster." The elderly detective instructed as he started driving. Connor nodded slowly and held his trembling hands up to the hot air blowing out of the vent. He also moved his body closer to it to warm up his chest. "Good. We're almost home, just stay close to that heater, son." Hank had a gentle hand on Connor's trembling shoulder as he pulled onto their street. The fatherly detective parked the car in the driveway and got out to help Connor inside the house. He opened the passenger side door and gently helped the freezing deviant stand up and walk into the house. Sumo was very excited to see the detectives finally come home, and he tried to jump up on Connor. "Down, boy, don't wanna hurt your best friend." He gently pushed Sumo away and sat Connor down on the couch. "Stay there, I'm gonna get you some blankets and a heating pad." Hank told him, walking down the hall to grab said objects needed to help warm his partner up.
The android obeyed and sat on the couch, his bandaged and frostbitten hands rubbing his trembling arms in an attempt to stay warm. His breathing was shaky and restricted due to the extreme cold he was exposed to. A flash of fear ran through his clouded and dazed mind as he realized that he had almost shut down due to Mike dragging him down to the bottom of the lake. Warm tears began running down his almost-frozen cheeks as his partner came back into the room. "Here we go. This should help." He placed the heating pad on Connor's lap and covered him in a few blankets. He looked up at Connor's face and his own expression morphed into one of concern at the sight of the deviant's tears. "Hey, what's with the tears, kid?" He sat down beside the crying, shaking android, who was shaking his head quickly as he tried to stop the flow of tears.
The elderly detective wrapped an arm around the sniffling deviant's shoulders and pulled him into his side. "It's alright son. You're okay now." He said soothingly, subconsciously rubbing Connor's arm to comfort him. He knew how scared the deviant was now that the whole ordeal was over, and knew he needed to let his emotions out. "It's okay. Let it out." He held the android close to him, successfully comforting him and warming him up as he cried silently. Suddenly, Sumo jumped up on the couch and plopped down on his android master's lap, receiving an audible 'oomph' from Connor as the very heavy dog laid down. Hank chuckled and pet Sumo's head. "He weighs a ton, but he'll keep ya warm." Connor gave a slight smile and pet the large Saint Bernard's back as Sumo wagged his tail, pleased at the attention. He looked up at his partner, who was still holding him.
"Hank?" He spoke quietly.
"Yeah?" Hank looked down at him in return.
"...Thank you."
Hank smiled and ruffled Connor's cold, damp hair. "Hey, can't have my partner turn into a popsicle, now can I?"
