Chapter 6: Bionic Amnesia

Leo's POV

It's been a week. IT'S BEEN A WEEK.

We've been spending the last seven days trying to jog Chase's memory. We're getting a few results, an occasional spark of memory about something like Chase being thrown over the room by Adam once or twice. It's not working. Mr. Davenport and Bree are holding out hope but I think Adam gave up ages ago.

I'm slowly losing hope in getting the old Chase back. We'll have to just have a new Chase. A non-bionic, completely normal Chase. I hope Bree is feeling okay… I know how much she has felt about this. She's been absolutely broken, you can see it. She and Chase are so so close. But a non-bionic Chase could lead to ME GETTING BIONICS AND JOINING THE TEAM!

Maybe Chase's amnesia is a good thing after all!

Donald's POV

I just can't see this working. We are trying to jog Chase's memory with any method we have but we just don't have any meaningful leads to build upon. Even my genius tactics aren't working; my new bionic chip for Chase is completely pointless if we haven't got the same Chase as before. I even managed to unlock some new brilliant abilities for him, but then this spanner had to be thrown into the works. I'm beginning to lose faith in this project. It wasn't even my idea so that's why it's failing. I know for sure Adam has already ditched the idea, but there's no surprise there. I've noticed Leo has been scaling back his activity in this operation.

I really don't want to. I really, really don't want to. Chase may not be my biological son, but he is still my son to me. I've been raising him for a decade with Adam and Bree and we have had some fantastic memories and times. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember a single one of them. It's heartbreaking. You know, the entire reason he's in this situation was due to his selfless sacrifice to save Bree's life. This gave me two conclusions.

One: I raised him absolutely perfectly! Saving the girl's life, well done there Chase.

Two: After what he did, and what Bree openly said last week when we found out about his "bionic amnesia", I feel those two really do care about each other. And care for each other beyond friendship and "fake siblinghood" if you will. Maybe I should relax my stance on those two's potential relationship. I don't think anyone else has a problem with it, it's just me seemingly. If by some miracle we can restore him to 'normal Chase', I wouldn't be against Bree and Chase exploring their possibilities together. Their clear care for each other is resounding and remarkable. However, Bree still hasn't talked to me properly and openly since I shot her and Chase down. I shouldn't have.

Bree's POV

I think tomorrow I should take Chase to school. It would maybe help jog his memory of the area? I hope so. I think introducing him to Principal Perry again. LOOOOOL! That might scare his memory back to him! Oh Bree, what are you doing… you can't do this… it's done.

You've lost him, haven't you? Why am I talking to myself in the second person in my own head? I don't get this. Look, there's Chase! Damn it, I've done it again.

"Hey, Chase!" I energetically shout. I'm happy to see him even if he isn't him right now. But, we can make it work.

"Uhhh hey… erm… Bessie?" he stammers out. It hurts so much when he can't even remember my name. It scares me too. I've told him my name plenty of times and he can't even remember a four-letter name for the girl he likes. I mean the girl who likes him. I mean both! I don't even know anymore! This is tearing me apart... but I really want him back…

I really need him back. Surely everyone isn't going to give up right?

"Hey, Bree…" Mr. Davenport? Oh great. I'm still not talking to him. Whenever I talk to him, he makes me want to give up and chase after Chase at the same time. I'll just walk away again as I've done for the last six or seven days. "Bree, stop. We need to talk."

"Fine. What do you want?" I asked. I have no patience and he has only a few minutes.

"Look, I wanted to apologize for shouting at you last week about Chase. Looking about how much you two care about each other recently is something I've begun to honor," he began. At least he's apologized for making me feel like shit even more during this absolute fucking nightmare. "Chase was ready to sacrifice his life for you, and you've been sacrificing your time and energy to try and get him back. And what you said about him last week, about how you love him," I groan. Knew he'd bring that up. What's he gonna say now?

"And if, by some absolute miracle, we can turn this around and get him back… the real Chase… I wouldn't be standing in the way of what you two want to do. It might take some time to adjust but, I wouldn't be against it. Because at the end of the day, it's about you two, not us."

Wait, what? He's not against me and Chase? Well, that doesn't matter at the moment since he's currently playing with the remote like he's never seen one before, but it's important to any potential future we have together to have the backing of Mr. Davenport.

"Thanks, Mr. Davenport, it really means a lot that you wouldn't be against it," I state, as he smiles. "Ever since we found out we're not biological siblings, I've seen him in a different light, and based on the way the 'date' was going before that bald guy turned up, I think he might like me too."

He just pulls me in for a hug. His sudden change in mood to this is amazing. I love it.

"Bree, that's adorable that you think of it like that, but first of all, we need to get YOUR Chase back to what he was: a dork, creepy weirdo-"

I punch his arm and a mix of a laugh and an 'ow' is his response.

Chase's POV

That girl that's been talking to me since I got out of the hospital… what was her name again? Beth? Wait I know it starts with B. I have no clue what it is. But what I do know is that she's kind of cute. She's really fresh and jumpy and I think she must like me or something because she's all over me all the time. I got to try and remember her name though. I can't even remember mine! Apparently, before my accident, I was a superhuman called Chase that went on missions with that tall guy and the cute girl saving people. I don't buy it. They must be lying. Like, I'm a late teenager that's trying to get out of school here. Though I did have weirdly high grades before this accident. I don't even know what the accident was. I'll go ask that Bell girl. Wait, Beth. No… oh whatever, I'll go ask for her name too then. And mine whilst I'm at it.

Leo's POV

"Hey uh… Bell?" the amnesia guy asks Bree.

"It's Bree…" the clearly demoralized hormone-filled girl with depression says to him. "…you alright? Did you need something?"

"Yeah, I was wondering what the accident was that caused me to lose my memory and my bionics? I haven't got a clue," he asked.

Wait wait… he remembered he was bionic? Bree and I exchange hopeful glances.

"I was going to be killed by this maniac and you saved me by taking him out with a force field grenade thingie. It fried your bionic chip in the back of your net and clearly gave you long-term amnesia," she says. Adam comes in and hits Chase on the back of his head.

"CAN YOU QUIT IT ADAM? BREE IS TRYING TO HELP ME REMEMBER MY LIFE HERE!" he screams.

"YOU CALLED ME BREE?" Bree happily jumps up and down clapping.

"Wait, was it the wrong name again? It was next on my list of B names I was going to call you until I get your name right…" he worriedly said.

"Yes Chase, her name is 'demoralized hormone-filled girl with depression'," I said. Bree stares me down yet again.

"Leo, leave her alone, Bree is trying to be flirty with me," Chase said.

Bree pulled me over to the side.

"Told Adam to stop hitting him… knew you were Leo… and called me my name and said I was being flirty!" she excitedly repeats. I know, I was literally there. "We have a breakthrough!"

We exchange a quick hug and turn around, but Chase was gone?

Oh no no, Chase was just on the floor. CHASE WAS ON THE FLOOR. HE HAS COLLAPSED.

Bree and I look at each other blankly and call Adam over to help us take him to his temporary bedroom.

?'s POV

How amazing. Their genius team leader is down. Krane might've lost his freedom to take him down, but 1 down, 2 to go…

I turn off my tablet monitoring the surveillance of the bionic children. When I get my hands on the remaining two, I will fix that last freak's memory and force him to watch me torture his 'brother' and the girl he loves. I think I'll do more with her, too, since she means so much to him. And then, I will finish him off.

I will tear this family apart. Limb. By. Limb.
