I want

"I want money and power and women, sex, status, glory…"

"You demand the finest things in life!"

Chimera Bido's words hit Greed. A sudden and sharp pain passed through his mind. He saw a blurred image. But he pierced Bido's chest without any thought.

But other images engraved his mind. Men fighting, a group of comrades falling, dying. King Bradley killing them without mercy. Were these his comrades, previous Greed's as Ling pretended? He collapsed as the Prince yelled in his mind.

"No you're wrong Greed! It's not that easy! They'll always be a part of you! You can't just erase them from yourself! They were the only part of you that you chose! Look at them! Can you not hear their souls crying out? You abandoned them. Your real family! You threw them away like trash! Fool! If you turned your back on something you wanted, you don't deserve to call yourself Greed!"

Greed screamed, Bido's body between his hands. His heart was hollow, even more than when he was born, after he'd taken control of that kid's body.

Ling's words were burning him, and he let him take back the control of his body after Greed's fight against Wrath. What did he want? Money, women, glory, he wanted to be the king of the world. He was sure of that. He accepted people around him only because they were useful to satisfy his desires.

There was a strange comradeship between Edward Elric and the two giant chimeras who followed him. It was oddly familiar and during the months he spent with the three of them, it reminded him of the chimeras who lived with him in Dublith. Both were a mismatching band of outlaws, and despite all the arguments they got along well. The differences didn't really matter with them. And they had all chosen to serve him for him to travel with them, so Greed would use them to reach his goal.

Pride was kept away from the fight, Wrath had gone missing, Gluttony was dead, and Envy hadn't contacted anyone since they'd left for the North. Only Sloth was left to protect the old man. What could prevent him from satisfying his unquenchable thirst now? He would go to the center of the world, he would take Father's place, and he would reign to get money, glory, women and all the finest things in life.

But when Ling took control to help his people and fight Bradley, doubt seized Greed. For what was he fighting? When he screamed with the Xingese prince as Fu attacked the Fuhrer, he felt lost. Was the wrath that overwhelmed him his own? He blew hit after hit to Wrath, until the man fell into the moats. Was he the one who shouted at Lan Fan? Who ran to the old man's body? Who cried the loss of his closest ally? Who promised the dying soldier he would protect the gate? The words were Ling's, but Greed realized they were his too. Knowingly, he lent his strength so he could fulfill his mission. His project could wait the time he helped the kid.

He'd failed. The desire burning his soul would never be satisfied. Father had fooled him and taken all power as he'd wanted to since the beginning. However, the cheers from the soldiers and friends of Fullmetal as the boy was fighting bare-handed made him realize something. He'd grown fond of all these people who'd been by his side all these months.

"Greed. This is what you desperately wanted, isn't it?"

"Yeah, you're right," he admitted. "This is what I wanted. I wanted the chance to have friends, like this."

He'd got many friends, he realized. Dolcetto, Roa, Martel, Bido, all the chimeras from the Devil's Nest, Edward, Darius, Heinkel, even Lan Fan and Fu while they hadn't met for long, and especially Ling, all had followed him, had welcomed him knowingly, had shown him what taking care and liking people meant.

How ironic, he thought while Ling was trying to hold him back, fighting Father's attraction force. He was realizing what he truly wanted, and a few minutes later, that was stolen from him. He couldn't fight, despite Ling's protests. So his one and only lie was for him, to protect the one who had shared his soul with him all that time. He deserved to satisfy his own desire.

"Later." He left Ling's body.

Before he died, he could do something. He could rebel one last time against his creator. He used his last power remnant to change Father's body into coal. Father pulled him out from himself and hit him one last time. It was the end, Greed knew it. He glanced at the young people looking at him with desperate eyes. They wouldn't stop bothering him, for sure.

"That's all I've really need." He laughed. "They gave me anything I could want. Thank you, and goodbye, my friends."
