The second question was directed at Cass who answered right away: "I am her bodyguard, Cassandra Roben. And who are you?"
His hostile behavior changed right away: "Ah right, sorry. Kara told me about you. My name is John, I am head of the DEO. And what have you found, Miss Luther?"
Lena started to explain right away: "The database has found a match, it is the blood of an hudjal, an alien out of another galaxy. The database from Krypton does not have much information about them, but apparently, they live in packs and always somewhere near water as they sleep in there. They look nearly like humans but have both gills and a lung and their skin is a bit blue. They have never been hostile before. I wonder why they would suddenly kidnap an agent."
Kara who had heard it all from the side of the room, spoke abruptly: "I have no idea. Especially why Alex? There are many agents that are easier to target than her. Do we know where in the city they are? Maybe close to the ocean?"
The room was silent for a few seconds, then Cass spoke up to everyone´s surprise: "Kar, do you remember this interview Alex had to give? The one that titled her as one of the best doctors of the country?"
Kara looked at her bewildered: "Yes of course, why?"
"Can you put it on the big screen? Somewhere between 1 min 30 and 2 min in, I think."
A young agent did as she told and soon there was Alex speaking to a reporter. After a few seconds, Cass said: "Stop. One second back and freeze."
The picture on the huge screen showed Alex before a huge crowd. Cass walked forward and pointed on one of the people in the background: "Can you zoom in on him?"
Before she could say anything else, Lena exclaimed: "Oh. Now I understand."
"What?", muttered many agents.
Lena turned to them: "Don´t you see? The skin is not as rose as ours and those blurry lines on his neck."
Now everyone had understood. John looked at Cass: "How did you remember that?"
She answered lightly: "I noticed him when I watched it the first time, I just did not think much about it. There are many aliens in this city. But with that description…"
"They must have been following her. Who knows for how long? But what do they want from her?", Kara said.
"From whom?", asked a female voice far behind them. Kara turned on the spot and stared wide-eyed at Alex who had just stepped into the DEO unnoticed and as far as anyone could see unharmed. With her was her girlfriend Maggie, who looked at them a bit confused.
With a rush of air Kara had moved with inhuman speed to wrap her arms around her sister. Alex laughed and asked: "With what did I earn that greeting?"
Kara pulled away again and sobbed: "We thought you have been kidnapped, you idiot. Everyone was searching for you."
Alex had stopped to laugh immediately and looked around, finally taking in how many agents had gathered in this room. Then her gaze fell on Lena and Cass and she asked: "Lena, Cass what are you doing here?"
She looked at Kara and her gaze softened: "Hey Kara, everything is fine, I am ok."
Maggie understood first: "You guys thought Alex had been kidnapped?" She turned to Alex: "I told you we should have called."
Alex wrinkled her brows and said: "OK. This was a false alarm. Let´s all calm down and I will explain the situation."
Most of the agents left the room after that, so that only Kara, John, Lena, Alex, Maggie, Cass and this young man, Winn, were left. Then Alex said: "I can´t believe it that you thought I was kidnapped. I wasn´t even gone for half a day."
Kara snapped at her: "What exactly was I supposed to think? You simply disappeared while I fought with the rouge alien. I searched the area, tried to call you on comms and on your phone. I even went to your apartment, but you were gone. Gone Alex!"
At the end Kara´s voice had nearly morphed into a scream. Ales looked at her starstruck, but it was Cass who moved first. She stood up from her seat next to Lena and marched forward until she nearly stood nose to nose with Kara.
Kara stumbled backwards: "Don´t come closer. I don´t want to hurt you. You know I have problems controlling my strength when I am so emotional."
Lena held her breath when she saw that Cass ignored Kara completely. She simply stepped forward again and hugged the other woman hard: "You know you can´t hurt me.", she said it in an extremely low tone, so Kara was the only one who heard it.
Within a few seconds Kara was a sobbing mess in Cass arms, she would have fallen to the ground, if it were not for Cass who steadied her. Alex had a sorrowful expression on her face as she realized how much those few hours had taken out of Kara. She leapt up and joined the hug.
Soon Cass took a step back and left the two sisters alone, mumbling to each other. When Kara´s tears had subsided, Alex tugged her back to her seat and started to explain for everyone else: "I am so sorry. I didn´t know it would cause so much pain and chaos. I was keeping the crowd back while Kara fought that alien and a blast from the battle nearly hit me. I am only unscathed because of someone pushing me out of harm´s way. He was an alien and he got hit instead of me. I had to do something. I knew I couldn´t help him with our technology so he told me and Maggie where his Pack lives. We brought him there and stayed until we were sure he would live. I wanted to thank him. He saved my life after all. I wanted to contact you as soon as we brought him there, but both my phone and my headset were dead after jumping into the water there. I am really sorry, no one kidnapped me."
She looked at Lena and Cass: "Thank you for coming to save me. Even if I didn´t need the rescue. I appreciate it." They smiled. At least Alex was safe and not harmed.
John asked: "Did he make it?"
Alex nodded: "Yes, luckily."
Then John said, looking at all of them: "Good. Let´s all go home, it´s been a long day. Thank you all for your commitment. Especially you, Miss Luther. I know you have all hands full with that company of yours."
Lena sighed and answered: "Of course. Come on Cass let´s go." They grabbed their things and left the DEO behind. Their car war already waiting outside. The driver asked: "Where should I drive you to, Miss Luther?"
Lena stifled a yawn and answered: "I need to go back to L-Corp, there are some things I need to finish today. Do you want us to drive you home first, Cass?"
Cass tilted her head slightly and answered: "I will come with you."
Lena spoke: "It´s already 7 pm and I will most likely stay at the office for another few hours until I finish. That's much too late."
Cass simply repeated her answer and looked the other woman firmly in her eyes. Lena shrugged: "Fine. To L-Corp then."
As they arrived back at L-Corp everything was silent there. Nearly all lights were already out. Apart from the security that patrolled the house day and night, no one was still there. They made their way up to Lena´s office and the CEO sat sighing on her chair. Cass let her deal with the chaos she left and went to make some coffee.
She remembered Kara complaining that Lena drank her coffee black without any sugar or cream. She herself could not stand the taste of coffee and took to drinking tea instead. When she was finished, she brought it back into Lena´s office and put the mug with coffee down right before Lena.
Lena stifled another yawn and thanked her while tipping into her laptop simultaneously. After finishing the text, she was writing Lena took a big swallow of the liquid and smiled. It was a tired smile but a smile.
Cass returned it: "Anything I can do, to lessen your workload?" Again, Lena was surprised, she was asking herself why this woman was so nice to her. Since she had first met her the blonde had never shown any sign of dislike, no, she had offered her help whenever it was needed. Lena had begun to ask herself what it was, that the other woman wanted from her.
Cause that was the only possible reason. Her upbringing had hammered that thought into her, like nothing else. Nobody does something for free. She noticed that she must have been quiet for a while because Cass asked: "Lena, Lena are you ok? Did you hear me?"
There was concern in her voice. After blinking a few times to concentrate on the woman in front of her, she said the first thing that came to her mind. Directly after saying it, she knew it had been a mistake: "Why do you care? You are just my bodyguard, I pay you. Nothing else."
For the first time she saw a negative reaction on Cass face. The expression was short and changed into a mask of indifference nearly immediately, but she had seen it. Hurt, confusion, anger. Cass just looked down in her lap and said: "You are right, Miss Luther. I will wait on the couch until you are ready to go home."
With that she stood and settled on the couch. Nearly ripping her book out of her bag and starting to read as fast as possible. Lena was angry with herself about what she said. That was so unlike her. She had had panic and reacted just the way her family had taught her. Pushing everyone away from her, so she doesn´t get hurt.
Her gaze fell onto her work again and she decided that she couldn´t have that conversation today she had other things to do. After another three and a half hours Lena was finished. At least for the day, she had once nearly fallen asleep at her desk and her head hurt.
She stood up more or less gracefully and had to grab the corner of her table not to fall over. After the dizzy feeling passed, she looked to where her bodyguard had been siting a minute ago and found the couch empty.
She found Cass standing at her office door, holding it open for her: "The car is ready downstairs, Miss Luther."
Lena couldn´t stop herself from flinching as she heard her last name again. Great, she had really ruined it. She walked past her and into the elevator. The journey downwards was silent, Cass did not even look at her.
They entered the car and started the silent way to her home. Lena thought about apologizing, but before she had the chance to say something they had arrived.
Cass brought her to the door, not really looking at her. The second she reached the safety of her home, Cass turned and walked back to the car without another word or glance.
