Klaus was stumbling back along the beach in the early morning before the sun, pleasantly high from the joint he had managed to smoke, trying to decide where to go next, when he spotted a figure heading down towards the water. He was still on private property, so it was either some sort of security guard, or someone else who had also broken in.

For some reason, he was sure it was Dave. Maybe he should have been more cautious, but he was already calling out and running clumsily over before the thought reached him through the haze of drugs. Thankfully, it was Dave after all, and he stopped to let him catch up. It had only been a few hours since he left, but he was back to having legs and had a waterproof bag tucked under his arm.

"I see you there, sneaking out on me," Klaus said when he reached him.

"You okay there?" Dave asked with an amused smile, studying the loose-limbed way he moved.

"Oh, just dandy," Klaus said, waving a hand dismissively. "This is nothing, I'm just getting started, and- Wait a second, you have legs!"

"Good eye," Dave replied.

"No need to be a smartass," Klaus rolled his eyes. "I figured maybe it was a werewolf kinda thing, but if you can change back and forth, why didn't you go with legs as soon as you spotted me?"

"It takes a lot of energy," Dave shrugged casually, but it was obvious he was trying to choose his words carefully. "And I was already exhausted, so I couldn't risk it."

"Ah," Klaus said. "Wait, don't change the subject on me. Are you or are you not leaving?"

"I told you," Dave said solemnly. "No one can know about me."

"And I'm practically no one," Klaus exclaimed.

"Klaus," Dave sighed.

"Don't you, 'Klaus,' me," he chided. "Come on, you owe me a terrible hotdog. Actually, I'm heading back into town now, you can come with if you want. Wait, that makes it sound like I'm planning to lure you into a dark alley to get stabbed, when in reality I'm planning to lure you into a dark alley to get drugs."

"You live an interesting life," Dave chuckled, shaking his head.

"How about this; if you meet me back at the pier tomorrow, we can hang out there instead. You'll have a quick getaway if you regrow your tail, and you'll see anyone coming before they hit the sand, how does that sound?"

"You know that doesn't really fix the problem, right?" Dave asked.

"No, but maybe it'll convince you that I'm not gonna blab," Klaus said, poking him in the arm. "Come on, it'll be fun. Besides, it's gotta be a pain having to set up in a whole new town."

He chewed on his lip for a long moment, considering. "Fine," Dave said eventually. "Tomorrow night."

"Yes," Klaus exclaimed. "I'll even be nice and bring the alcohol, so don't flake out on me. Still owe me a hotdog though."
