"Hope," Hayley said.
Hayley was ignoring all of the pain that was still burning in her body from the fire that had made burn marks on her skin and was still there. Still, she ignored it and didn't care that she was in a body of water that went up to her shoulders. Hayley jumped out of the water with a land on her knees and hands and ran towards where she heard her daughter's howl. It was a full moon, how could she forget? All she could think of right now was to find her daughter, Hope Andrea Mikaelson.
She kept on running as the moonlight shone on her tempting her to turn but she didn't. She ran through the forest and came to a quick stop at the sight of a silver wolf right in front of her growling at a teenage boy that she had backed up against a tree.
"Hope," Hayley said trying to her attention and Hope kept growling at the boy. "Hope!" Hayley growled letting her alpha side out as she could feel her own red eyes glowing with black veins running underneath them. This time, Hope did look at her and her eyes glowed blue for a second recognizing her mom before returning to her normal eye color. In that time the boy (tried) managed to run before Hayley sighed and got in front of the teenage boy. "You will forget what you saw here tonight, You will forget you were attacked and ever saw me and heard the name Hope, you were just strolling through the wood."
"I was just strolling through the woods." He repeated in a trance.
"Good," Hayley said. "Now leave," She growled and he ran off. She turned towards her daughter and saw her pacing back and forth. "You're never going to believe what I found out," Hayley said.
Hayley followed her daughter back into the woods and waited for a couple more hours before Hope was able to change back in which that time the burns were healing but very slowly but Hayley could still feel the heat inside of her as if it was still around her, but Hayley could bare it. When Hope transformed back as the moon was slowly going back down. Hope wrapped the towel that she had gotten beforehand, around herself as her muscles were now sore all over.
"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, I could've killed that person!" Hope exclaimed.
"Hope! We've got bigger problems," Hayley said as she started walking. Hope caught up to her mom.
"What is it? Is it the witch?" She asked.
"Turns out, not a witch," Hayley said. "The kids at the hospital, were indeed scorched by a dragon."
Hope was silent for a second processing what her mom had just told her.
"What?!" Hope finally exclaimed. "But-"
"I saw it," Hayley said. "I tried to fight it." She looked at her hand as dark flesh was still there smelling like smoke. "And I failed, miserably."
"What are we going to do?"
"I don't know. All we know is that the dragon doesn't appear to be after us as it went for other kids first. And that means no other supernatural knows that we're here," Hayley said.
"But it's a dragon."
"Yep, so we've got work to do if we are going to stay here in this, not so peaceful, town," Hayley said ignoring the pain of the fire that was still there.
"Ok, ok. We can do this. Just hopefully before it burns more people." Hope said as they reached their house.
"And just because of this complication don't think you're not going to school..." Hayley trailed off as she just collapses on the floor of their home.
"MOM!"
"Do you think Hope was acting strange last night?" Scott asked Isaac as they were walking to school the next day.
"Just a bit, why do you ask?"
"Yesterday was a full moon, we've learned how to control it but that doesn't mean other, people like us, can control it too," Scott said.
"Wait, you're saying she might be a..." Isaac trailed off getting the idea.
"Dude, it's Beacon Hills, when have things have ever been normal to our knowledge," Scott said.
"Well...you've got a point there, you think we should tell the others bout this?" Isaac asked.
"No, not yet. Not until we're certain." Scott said.
"And how are we going to prove that?" Isaac asked.
"I'm not sure. Wait until another full moon?"
"Or, since we can't wait that long you can go to your boss, the druid," Isaac suggested.
"Right! Thanks, Isaac," Scott said.
"Anytime. Now pick up the pace we're going to be late!" Isaac said speeding up leaving Scott to follow him.
They laughed as they push each other racing to see who gets to school first. When they arrived they separated to went to their lockers. Scott was planning to go to Deaton, his boss, after school to ask him how to prove someone's a werewolf, hopefully, he's wrong about Hope. And he still needed to go to work either way. He needed to help his mom with money as they were working with minimum wage.
"Hey!" He heard and turned to face Kira.
"Uh, hi?" He said but it came out more like a question.
"I wanted to talk to you about the bonfire. It's a shame that they got burned. But better them than us." Kira said making Scott frown.
"What?'
"Oh I just meant like that, would you like to have fifth-degree burns? I know I wouldn't." She said.
"Yeah but I don't think anyone deserves that kind of pain."
"No! Of course not. Um, I just mean, that, -," Kira was cut off by Stiles waving at him to come over.
"I've got to go," Scott said and went over to his friend. "What's up?"
"Just saving you from whatever situation she put you in. I may not have your werewolf senses but I could feel that you wanted to get away from whatever conversation you were having."
"Yeah, she was talking about the bonfire saying how "Better them than us," sort of thing," Scott said.
"Ouch, I never would've pegged her as that type," Stiles said. "Well, come one we've got to get to class."
They entered the first class of the day and waited for it to start. Just as the bell rang though Hope came rushing in not looking up and sat at the back of the class. Stiles was about to say something when the teacher came in and the class started.
When it was done Hope did the same thing and rushed out of the classroom without any word to anyone and just hurried along her second period.
"What's up with her?" Stiles asked.
"I don't know," Scott said.
"Yesterday was a full moon, could that have anything to do with it?" Stiles asked.
"I'm not sure. I'm going to ask Deaton about it at work later one today." Scott said.
They went on without talking to Hope as she would always run off when class ended not giving Scott, Stiles, Isaac, Allison, Lydia, or Malia time to say one word.
"Do you know what's up with Hope?" Allison asked worried as they were at their usual lunch table.
"No, it must have been this morning or last night. She seemed fine yesterday." Malia said.
Just as they said that Hope raced past them heading inside the school.
"Hope!" Allison said and Hope kept walking even rushing more fasting. "I'll be back," Allison said and went after Hope.
Hope spent the whole day ignoring people. She didn't want to talk about it to anyone. Her mom was in the hospital. That shouldn't even be possible. At all, her mom was a hybrid. Having werewolf and vampire healing making her almost impossible to kill. And yet, she was laying in a bed in a hospital for the burns that were made from that damn dragon and that was spreading to her heart from the inside. The doctors say it's internal bleeding but they don't know the whole story. Hope was going to find the dragon and kill it.
"Hope!" She heard and recognized it as Allison's. She sped up trying not to face anyone and headed towards the library. "Hope!"
"Invisique," Hope said gesturing a hand symbol. Allison was now right beside her with a worried face looking ahead trying to find where she went. "Where are you, Hope Marshall." She said and continued searching.
Hope continued on to the library still invisible to the rest of the world. Luckily no one else was there not even the librarian and she went into the fantasy section. "Show me," She said and a book fell, a heavy and big one at that. She quickly gazed through the pages as the lights flickered around her from what she was causing because she didn't have bracelet one. She found a page that might be helpful to her. She was surprised that there was a spell-like this in school, but then again humans think it's not real.
"Death spell, perfect," Hope said. If it didn't work she read through the 'The Bestiary' that a sharp object to the throat would work. She flinched when her phone rang. Her mood picked up a bit as she saw who the caller was and accidentally dropped the invisibility spell to pick up the phone and put it next to her ear.
"Uncle Elijah," Hope said and couldn't help a tear that dropped. She needed her family.
"Hello Hope," Elijah said over the phone, she could already hear his frown. "Is everything alright Hope?" He asked.
Hope let out what was between a laugh and a strangled cry. "Uh No, not really."
"Hope, what's wrong?" Elijah asked and she could hear the concern in his voice.
"It's my mom," Hope said not knowing someone stepped inside the library. "It's bad, uncle Elijah. It's really bad."
"Hope what has happened? We need to know if you're both ok if we need to move you." She could feel his worry rise. She let out a soft sob.
"No, it's ok. I'm ok. Mom's not. She's in the hospital."
"What? That's not possible." Elijah said. "How?!"
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you," Hope said and let another tear run. "The doctors are saying, she has internal bleeding. They are saying it's a miracle she's still alive."
"Hope...If you need, one of us will go down there-,"
"NO! No, I mean. I know you and the rest have a lot on your hands with everything. I'll be fine, I guess. I'll just tell mom you said 'Hello',"
"Hope, we are here for you, you do not have to do everything on your own. It's ok to want help."
Hope let out a short chuckled, "I'll keep that in mind uncle, but, I'll manage."
"You are so much like your father and mother, powerful and still strong. Be careful, Hope. I'll tell Niklaus what happened but that you are ok."
"I'll appreciate that," Hope said with a sniff.
"Send Hayley my regards."
"I will. Bye, uncle Elijah."
"Goodbye Hope," Elijah said before Hope hung up.
Hope looked at the book she had in her hand. 'I'm going to find you.'
"Hope?" She heard and saw the person and it was Lydia. "Hope are you-?"
"I'm fine," Hope cut her off and stormed out of the library. But Lydia grabbed her hand.
"No, you're not," Lydia said.
"Lydia-"
"Let me in."
"It's-"
"Hope, Marshall. I will not let this go." Lydia pushed. Hope just succumb, she needed someone to lean on. Her uncle was wrong. She wasn't strong or powerful like her father or mother.
Lydia gave her a shoulder to cry on. "I heard about your mom," Lydia said.
"I don't want to lose her," Hope said barely a whisper. If her mom was a regular human or werewolf or vampire she would've died if not for her hybrid speed healing.
"You won't," Lydia said.
"How do you know?"
"Call it a gut feeling," Lydia said.
The bell rang. "We've better get to class," Hope said.
"Are you going to be ok?"
"Once I know my mom's fine. I will be." Hope said and they left the library with the book still in Hope's hand.
School ended and Hope left with no questions asked and slammed the door to their house. The lights flickered on and off as she passed. She needs a weapon in case the spell doesn't work. Right now she wasn't thinking clearly and just wanted to find the dragon. She looked up and down and found nothing. Not until she passed the hallway of paintings. There was a knife on display, Hope noticed it when she first arrived but paid no attention to it. She removed the box from the display and grabbed the knife that now seemed to glow in her hand. She hadn't noticed this from her mind being distracted. 'Perfect,' She thought.
"I've found out the reason why Hope is like she is now," Lydia said gaining the group's attention.
"Why? What happened?" Allison asked almost immediately.
"Turns out her mom is in the hospital," Lydia said he voice getting smaller.
"What happened?" Isaac asked repeating Allison's question.
"Internal bleeding, they don't know what's causing it," Lydia said.
"Oh my god."
"Do you have a buzz in your ear or something?" Stiles asked.
"No," Lydia said. "Nothing."
"I'll ask my mom more about it," Scott said.
They were all worried, one of their friend's parents was in the hospital. Scott said goodbye to the rest of the pack as he headed towards work.
He left bad for Hope as her mom was in the hospital. But none of them could do anything about them. But he still needed to confirm that she wasn't a werewolf so they didn't have to worry.
The bell rang as he entered.
"Hey, Scott,"
"Hey," Scott greeted back and got to work at the animal clinic. After an hour he decided to ask.
"So, how would you know if someone is a supernatural, a werewolf to be specific," Scott asked.
"Well, that's an odd question. Any reason?"
"No, just curious."
"Well, there are many forms to tell if someone is a werewolf. But a simple one would be mountain ash."
"What does that prove?" Scott ask.
"Remember, werewolves can't hold mountain ash. That's why Stiles can hold it and you can't, even if you are a true alpha."
"So, if they can't hold mountain ash. They should be a supernatural?"
"To my knowledge, yes."
Hope made her way into the woods. All she wanted was to find the dragon. But so far nothing. Not a single thing to be heard. Her mom had told her that it took a humanoid form. That would make it harder but the dragon wouldn't fit in town, hence the forest and why she was looking here.
"Come on." She muttered. The knife in her hand started glowing. She looked at it confused before she heard a roar. She snapped her head up and saw a figure looming over her. It flew down shooting fire at her before trying again and again. She got out the piece of paper she ripped out of the book. But by the time she looked back up the dragon had already disappeared.
"Oh crap," She said and ran down the forest trying to find it again.
She became tired fast though. Maybe because last night was a full moon. But she did find an abandoned cottage. The door of the basement from the outside flew open.
She cautiously approached it.
There was light in the basement so it wasn't all dark and gloomy along with jewelry, phones, gold, and..."This is my moms'" Hope said out loud as she reached and picked up a watch. As if right on cue, there was another roar. Hope sped outside to find the dragon once again flying over her.
"I've got you this time," Hope said. "Tenebris anima vestra contundito mortem et conteret spiritum. Frange vitam nolite corde ut sub terra esse, ad tenebras usque in sempiternum. Tenebris anima vestra contundito mortem." Hope kept on chanting over and over as the dragon came closer and closer.
Finally, when she thought the spell wasn't working and it had no effect, that it was over for her, the dragon crashed right in front of her and she looked away to cover the dirt from getting in her eyes.
When she looked back the dragon was in its humanoid form smelling like smoke and fire. It barely managed to reach out its hand as she was laying on the floor in a white gown.
"What is it?!" Hope demanded raising the knife, all she saw was red. The dragon only made a desperate reach for the knife in Hope's hand. "Is it the knife? Why are you here?!"
The dragon didn't respond and made another desperate reach. Hope eventually knew that it was pointless to ask questions and was about to slay it when she looked at it in the eyes.
'No!' Hope thought to herself and dropped the knife and backed away. She couldn't kill the dragon when it looks...when it looked so human. 'No no no, I can't. I can't do this.' The dragon made a reach for the knife and Hope only gained some of her minds back and kicked the knife away. She looked at the dragon in its humanoid form. She wasn't going to be the monster everyone makes her out to be. She wouldn't give them that satisfaction. She kneeled down in front of the dragon "Please help me." Hope pleaded with it. "Help me understand," The Dragon looked at her confused before it started gasping in pain. Hope shot up and stepped back as black goo was spilling from the dragon's mouth.
"Hey!" Hope said and then her form started to go as well, collapsing as it turned into the black goo she was spilling. 'What the hell is happening?!' She watched as the dragon dissolved right in front of her. She looked at it in horror. "What the-"
She didn't have time to finish her question. She heard a rustling of leaves and in a panic, she sped off. She thought no one here went into the woods. Hopefully, they didn't see her.
Turns out as later she would know it was just the wind.
But right now she was running. She dropped on her bed face first. She couldn't believe she was about to do what she almost did in the forest. All she could think about was her mom...her mom.
Hope sat up, she should check on her.
She only smelled distantly like smoke but only she could smell it, so she thought she was ok.
She didn't have a learner's permit yet so she couldn't drive the car so she had to walk. Which only made her more tired than she already was. She hadn't noticed as the knife glowed as she left the house.
She went through the hospital and went up to the front desk. "Um, I'm here for Hayley Marshall."
"Name?"
"Hope Marshall, I'm her daughter."
The woman looked up from her computer. "On the fourth-floor room 170."
"Thank you," Hope said and walked towards the elevator.
She walked to her mother's room and opened the door. She was surprised to see her mom awake, but what else did she expect. But she was pale, laying down on the bed in a hospital gown, and there was a bit of sweat on her forehead with needles coming out of her arm to IV bags. "Hope," Hayley managed out. Hope walked up and sat next to her. Hayley tried to sit up but Hope pushed her down.
"You need some rest mom," Hope said.
"Aren't I suppose to be taking care of you?" Hayley asked and smiled weakly. Hope grabbed a blood bag that she had grabbed from the floor below and gave it to her mom. "Thank honey," Hayley said and started drinking it all and her paleness went away but only a little.
"I found your watch," Hope said getting out Hayley's watch.
"I thought I lost it when the dragon took it," Hayley said then slightly frown. "Hope, where did you get this? The dragon-"
"I found it in an abandoned cottage that belonged to the dragon. As for the dragon itself..." Hope trailed off.
"Hope," Hayley said but coughed. "What did you do?"
"Nothing! I swear. The dragon...she just dissolved right in front of me."
"Well, then that's one less supernatural in the world." Hayley looked at her daughter. "Hope, promise me you'll be careful."
"Mom-,"
"Hope," Hayley said. "You can't let anyone find out."
"Ok, I promise," Hope said. "Also Elijah sends his regards."
Hayley weakly chuckled. "Always the noble one."
