The Phoenix's Birdcage
Chapter 6
The morning sun gleams upon Isla Sorna, giving some light to the dark island. Stepping quietly through the masses of trees and shrubs are the ACU team and Yang. The pterosaur that was going to help them told the blond girl that the creature they call the Spinosaurus lives in a patch of territory on the northeastern portion of their location. It seems they landed right on target.
Before they left, Katashi gave Yang an extra taser rifle in the event she did have to use force to stop the variety of predators that may try and kill her. She is confident in her abilities and her gauntlets. Something like a dinosaur won't take her down...if her mind doesn't stop her. Her mind is clouded with thoughts of her sister, but she has a job to do. She needs to push forward and get this done, and then mope about it later.
Many of the plants in the forest are in full bloom, so a sweet scent permeates through the air. Its been a while since she has smelt anything like this. Despite the scenery, its rather loud. The dinosaurs are roaring and bellowing, communicating with each other as always, as small bugs sand birds make those loud noises that the ACU have heard many times during early morning hour training.
Through the faint fog, the ACU team and Yang step through, poised for action. The spino could be anywhere. They know its one sneaky bastard despite its size, so they are being extra alert in the event it finds them and attacks. Yang just hopes it isn't one of those "ferals" that appeared often throughout her life before being frozen. If not, then taming its temper should be easy.
After an hour of trekking, the team stops to take a break. The fog has vanished by now, so they can see more clearly now. That didn't stop the uneasiness however. Especially with Yang, who sat by her lonesome on a moss-covered tree stump. She took a drink of her canteen every now and then, but she remained completely silent. Her mind was still on her sister...but then she wasn't, for something just caught her eye.
Its large and covered in long tendril-like vines. Curious, she got up from the stump and approached it with caution. She did not know if there was something inside, so she wanted to make sure so she isn't swiped away from, say, a hiding Grimm or a dinosaur. Instead, it turned out to be...well, something. She knew it was a vehicle of some sort, but it wasn't one she recognized right off the bat, even if she saw a picture of something similar in a textbook from the school she went to before being frozen.
"Wasn't expecting to find that," Katashi said, appearing beside her.
"What is it?" Yang asked him. Katashi sighed. He did not expect this girl to be estranged to things that seem so normal to him.
"That's...a plane," he responded. Yang tapped her foot and put a finger to her head, trying to remember if she heard that name before. She then snapped her fingers at the revelation in her head.
"Oh yeah! I remember that! The kingdoms used to use them during the Great War!" she exclaimed.
"Uh...yeah," Katashi said, not realizing that she was talking about a past war and not the war of the same name that his nation fought in a hundred years ago.
"But why is it like this?" Yang asked.
"From what I recall, some people came here looking for some boy, got attacked by the Spinosaurus, and the plane crashed. I heard they escaped but lost a few men to the spino. You do realize they do tend to eat us, right?" Katashi explained.
"Y-Yeah...I know that already," she told him. She peeked inside, though there was nothing of interest. It was empty and destroyed, just like he told her. She shrugged before turning over to Katashi.
"Who was on this plane anyway?" she asked.
"I don't know all of them, but I know that Alan Grant was part of that expedition."
"Alan Grant? Not familiar," she told him.
"He's a world-renowned paleontologist. He's published many works on the dinosaurs that Jurassic World has in their paddocks. Surprised you didn't know him considering your ability," he explained. He was kinda getting tired to explaining to her stuff, but he didn't say anything since she's too invaluable of a tool to protect his men from attacking dinosaurs. He looked at his watch and realized that the break has ended over five minutes ago. Scoffing, he goes to pick his rifle up and get the team moving again.
"So...is a paleontologist the job title for those people who make the dinos in the lab?" she asked. He sighed in annoyance, but still answered.
"No...they find the bones and amber that help the geneticists create them," he replies.
"Ohhhh I see..."
"Now, how about you be quiet and lets go Yang..." Katashi stopped. He was confused by Yang's sudden lack of response. Angered, he turns around and begins to say "Lets go!"
Only to find that Yang was gone.
Katashi's eyebrows raised in shock, seeing as where she stood was replaced by a freshly-stomped footprint. The team gathered around it. It resembled a rex's footprint, but they could distinctly remember that rexes were not around in this area since the spino killed them off. How the hell did something snatch her without being seen or heard by, well, everyone else!? Something that left a footprint of this size should have been heard, let alone felt through the vibrations in the ground!
Katashi was flabbergasted that something this large was so quiet at the same time. However, the snapping of trees caught the team's attention, and they saw that multiple trees have been pushed out of the way by something massive. The footprint was part of a set and it led through this path, and the snapping of wood can be heard coming from said direction.
"Well...at least it will be easy to find her bones..." he quickly got his gun ready and let it out of safe mode. "Follow me!"
The team rushed through the forest along the path. They can't leave a friend behind, and considering that Vic told them that Yang was also pretty durable for a human, such as when she survived being smushed against a wall by the Indominus, then she may as well should still be alive!
Yang gasped as she was slammed against the ground with full force after being crushed between a set of powerful jaws and teeth. She saw a foot then come down atop of her, giving her barely enough time to catch it with her arms. The force it exudes is massive, but she could hold it after absorbing some of the kinetic energy with her semblance. She soon glanced at her attacker, only for shock to fill her soul.
It's an Alpha Arcosuch.
The amount of bones covering its body compared to its non-alpha form shows that it was a durable monster, and something that probably needs more than one huntsman to take down. However, she's the only one that's around that could even tangle with Grimm, so she has no option but to try and fight it to the best of her ability.
Despite some trouble, she managed to lift the Grimm's foot off of her and used her gauntlets to launch herself away as it tried to snap its jaws around her. She slammed against a tree, which caused a crack to form along its bark from how hard she hit it. Said tree would soon be turned into shrapnel as the beast smashed against it and Yang.
She gave the beast a right hook with some of the kinetic energy she gained from the attack, but it merely pushed it away a few meters and made it even more pissed off. It roared and charged her once more. She took advantage over its weakness to tight turns and quickly sidestepped the beast. She poured dust-filled lead from her gauntlets into the beasts side, but it didn't do as much damage as she hoped.
She is soon launched by the monster's long tail, crashing through a few tree canopies before stopping. Angered, she prepares to launch herself to end the beast with a well-placed strike to the head...only to hear the frightening click of her gauntlets, signifying their emptiness. She did not realize that her ammo reserves where so low!
"Shi-" before she could finish her curse, the beast jumped at her from below, forcing her to use a branch to swing to the ground. As it spat out a mouthful of branches and leaves, she rushes towards it, placing a well placed punch right against its nose. It was thrown back by the force due to the energy she stored up, sending it flying through the forest. Despite a broken snout and its armor being broken along its head and neck, the Arcosuch is still alive.
It got up soon after, but in a daze. It stumbled back to the area Yang is in in an attempt to fight it again. Yang is an experienced fighter, but she was not expecting it to be so unpredictable when its like this. She had to keep dodging as it kept wailing on her with slashes, stomps, kicks, bites, and tail swings. It was not letting up, and as it began to come to its senses, she was slowly getting tired.
She prepared to use the taser rifle that Katashi gave her before their trek into Isla Sorna, but it quickly bit into it. She stared in shock as it was cleaved right down the middle.
"Wasn't expecting these guys to have such flimsy weapons," she said, hoping a joke could bring her back from the brink. However, it was all for naught, as she was soon slammed against a tree by the Grimm's claws. Her body shimmered, which made her fearful. Her aura was depleted. She panicked as the beast licked its non-existent lips. It was apparently looking for a meal for a long time. And now it has its chance.
As she closed her eyes, awaiting her fate and saying sorry to Ruby, gunshots could be heard. The Acrosuch felt itself being pelted by something, and it turned its head to see the ACU team firing its taser guns at it. It let go of Yang, angered by the attack, and went to charge at it.
If only it saw him.
Before it could chomp its jaws down on a frantic Katashi, a familiar sail-backed dinosaur bursts from the trees and clamps its crocodile-like jaws around the Grimm's neck. It roared in pain as it thrashed about, trying to get at the creature, but it was as large as it was and built longer, so it could not reach its neck or body. With one quick twist, the dinosaur turned its neck, and the satisfying snapping of the Grimm's vertebrae could be heard by everyone. As it let go, the Grimm soon perished, turning into the characteristic black smoke that they are noted for.
The humans were amazed and shocked by their savior...the Spinosaurus.
"Last one," Yang heard. Last one? Was it hunting the Grimm? Masrani did say the spino was aggressive to other large predators in its turf, so its likely it was hunting them as well. She was relieved that it and the ACU saved her, but did worry that she could not speak to it. Her animal speak ability was powered by aura, but only if she was learning new calls. She could still speak to animals that she knew the calls for, and luckily for her, Jurassic World's CEO gave her the roars of the beast in front of her so she could talk to it easier.
"Thank you."
The Spinosaurus turned its large head to her. Her bruised body and tattered clothes. She definitely had it rough. He, however, was not impressed, and let out a menacing growl.
"Humans..." Yang watched as it showed more of its teeth in anger.
"That creature gave me a hard time. Thank you for helping me," she roared a thank you.
"Human speak me. Not help with saving," it growled. Yang realized that the beast was thinking about eating her and the ACU Team.
"Wait! We don't want trouble!" she hissed, not wanting a confrontation, especially in her state. She was also afraid, since that type of speak was the signature type used by ferals.
"Human no mercy. Human hurt me. Human pay," it roared. The ACU team prepared to fire their taser weapons at the beast, but Yang stopped them. She turned back to the spino.
"I can see you don't like us...please give these men mercy," she growled a plea. The spino snorted at the idea but agreed, not feeling the energy to hunt them today.
"Me give chance. Leave home. Me no hunt if leave now," it hissed. She sighed in relief.
"Thank you again," she crooned. She wanted, no, NEEDED to be polite. Ferals are not known for being nice back in her day, and if communications fail, then they will not hesitate to kill humans. This will be no different, and it giving them a chance to escape is extra relieving. She told them to go back in order to say safe from the dinosaur, and prepared to head with them.
"Wait." Yang stopped in her tracks and looked at the Spinosaurus.
"What?"
"I saw human. Human that speak me like you. Can't remember face. Human want me to tell other humans."
Yang's eyes widened to the size of dinner plates.
"T-Thank you," she crooned before rushing off. The spino grumbled before walking off, hoping to find a stream so it can get some fish. As Yang grouped back up with the ACU team on their way back to camp, the thought about the "human that speak like her" was the only thing on her mind. Who is this person? They must've been dropped off in an iceberg just like that Arcosuch was.
Whoever it was, she wasn't leaving this island until she finds them.
New chapter done! I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I'm really sorry if it isn't up to your standards and if I got the personalities of the characters wrong. Leave a review or PM me if you have ideas you have that could fit in the story and I'll try to add them in to the best of my ability (if I can). Shoutout to Nitro zeus who gave the idea of them stumbling upon the remains of the plane from Jurassic Park III, as well as the idea for the ferals. Hopefully I added your idea to your liking.
Speaking of ferals, I want to elaborate on that. Ferals are basically dinosaurs or other animals that are spiteful to humans and aren't as easily swayed by them with their animal speak unlike other animals.
I also realized that this is going to be not only an AU to where Earth is actually present day Remnant and aura gives the ability to speak to animals, but also one where Wu is less of what he is in the actual film and Fallen Kingdom and more nicer...if that makes sense.
Anyways, this is Sporedude135, signing off...
