Chapter 5
Thunderstruck
As Lance and Rui were taking their positions, Wes arrived back in the contestant's stand. The snagger waved as he saw Cynthia and sat down with "Long time no see"
"You've gotten a lot better!" Cynthia complimented, thinking back to her battle with Wes a few years back.
Wes chuckled and said Never stopped training, maybe you and I will have a rematch next round?"
Cynthia smirked and said "Steven's no pushover, but if I win I'll be looking forward to it"
Lance went first and sent out two pokemon, first a Haxorus and then a red Gyarados. In response, Rui sent out her Milotic and a Zebstrika
"3….2….1...BEGIN!" the announcer ordered.
"Haxorus, use dragon rush!, Gyarados Rain Dance" Lance commanded.
Rui smirked and replied "no hurricanes, Zebstrika, thunder! Flora use attract!"
Lance gasped as the lightning bolt struck, Rui had guessed his strategy.
The Red Gyarados shot up the ball of water causing a localized downpour on the field, only to immediately get struck by a wicked lightning bolt that completely consumed it's form, the glowing pink hearts shot toward Haxorus and it instantly looked at Florges lovingly.
Haxorus didn't fare much better, bewildered by the attract, it started at Florges and allowed itself to be hit by a volley of moonblasts, knowing it out instantly.
Lance shoot his head and returned the duo before tossing out his Dragonite and a Noivern.
Before he could even give a command Florges used attract again, on its own it had compleatly immobilized his two remaining pokemon.
"Spark, return, go Aqua!" Rui said as she rapidly recalled her Zebstrika and sent out a Milotic.
As the sea serpent appeared from its pokeball it seemed like it already knew what its trainer wanted, it began charging up the ice beam before Rui finished saying to use it.
Florges kept up the attract, allowing Aqua to barrage Noivern and Dragonite with so many ice beams that they were both encased in a solid block of ice.
Lance was staring at his frozen pokemon, too dumbfounded to give any commands. This didn't matter though, as Rui gave a final command.
"Aqua, use dragon pulse, Flora moonblast!" The redhead ordered.
In an explosion of blue and pink light, the match was over. Lance's two powerful dragon types fainted as the ice shattered.
"Dragonite and Salamence are unable to battle! Aqua and Flora are the winners, Rui takes the match 0-4!" the referee admitted.
Lance shook his head and recalled his pokemon before respectfully bowing to Rui and leaving the field in silence. Rui had the perfect answer for his dragon types and the attract had ruined any chance for countering her, predicting the rain dance had been minor in the grand scheme of things. He had lost, fair and square.
Up in the contestant section, everyone was in shock, save for Wes who was smirking. Rui had become an incredible trainer, he had given her a pretty tough pokemon to start, and she had built her team from there. He was proud of his girlfriend, and it brought him joy seeing everyone else's reactions. While Rui's first pokemon was incredibly powerful for a starter, the time she took to purify it made her more than deserving of it in Wes's eyes. She and Wes had separately beaten the elite four in Kanto, Johto, Unova and Kalos
Cynthia was still in disbelief as she said "Incredible that she deduced Lance's strategy from the rain dance, it's almost like she could read his mind!"
Wes couldn't help but laugh…
Cynthia had bested Steven after a long battle, his mineral Pokémon just couldn't topple her one remaining pokemon, Garchomp, leaving Michael and Lt. Surge as the final match of round 1.
Surge led with a Magnezone and his Raichu, Michael then led with Volt and Tusks.
"HA! Some trainer you are!" Surge taunted as Michael's choice of a water type
"3….2….1...BEGIN!" the announcer ordered.
Surge went first with "Maganzone! Thunder!, Raichu THUNDER!" intending to knock out the Walrein instantly.
Michael smirked and said "volt spotlight!"
The Jolteon glowed before shooting a beam into the air, which then landed back on him.
Both of Surge's pokemon's eyes glowed white and they attacked Jolteon, both attacks doing nothing as Jolteon's volt absorb rendered them useless.
"Tusks, you bulldoze!" Michael ordered.
The Walrein glowed orange before slamming his flippers on the ground, causing the ground underneath the two eclectic types to shake and split open.
Both electric types were one-shotted, leaving their trainer standing in shock at the powerful attack.
Surge shook his head and returned the two before tossing out two more pokeballs, revealing an Electivire and an Eelektross.
Michel smirked and substituted Tusks for another pokemon, tossing out an ultra ball and revealing a Salamence that let out a feral roar.
Up in the stands, Lance was sitting next to Cynthia, his face curling into a smirk when he saw Michael's Salamence in action.
"Jealous?" Wes questioned.
Lance chuckled and said "actually, I sort of am. I've seen plenty of dragon types, and that is the best looking Salamence I've ever seen"
Cynthia, a fan of dragon types herself asked "How can you tell?"
Just then Surge's Eelektross fell to the ground and fainted, knocked out in a barrage of dragon claws.
Lance chuckled and said "it's powerful, but I can also already tell that it's bond with Michael is incredibly tight, the way it listens to commands and is in sync with him. Salamence are notoriously hard to train, in fact I'm still working with mine, but that pokemon is trained perfectly!"
The referee called out "Electivire is unable to battle, Michael, wins 4-0!"
The announcer finished with "thus concludes day one, we'll see you all tomorrow for the semi-finals!"
Author's note- the next three matches will be in a single chapter.
