Chapter 6: iTry Again
"Hey Freddie! You there?" Sam called out.
"Yeah I'm out here!" Freddie yelled out.
Sam threw her bag onto Freddie's living room floor and followed his voice out on his fire escape. Freddie was sitting at the window with his back turned with his radio quietly playing Cuddlefish's song Remembrance. She sat next to him looking out into the night sky.
"I thought you were tired." Sam brought up.
"I was, but I decided to stay up a little bit longer." Freddie answered.
"Your door was unlocked. Wouldn't your mom freak?" Sam mentioned
"Yeah, but she's gone for the week attending those aggressive parenting meetings. It'll be fine." Freddie brushed off. "What are you doing here out so late?" Freddie asked back.
"Same thing, just felt like staying up a little bit longer." Sam confessed.
"Ah, gotcha." Freddie did a slight nod.
The silence between them filled Cuddlefish's song playing in the background.
"Sam?" Freddie turned his head to the left looking at Sam.
"Yeah?" Sam turned her head to the right looking at Freddie. His face shined against the moonlight outlining his face and copper brown eyes.
"Can I a-ask you something?" He nervously looked off to the side.
"Sure what's up?" Sam looked in his eyes.
"When we were in LA, did you mean what you said about me to Cat?" Freddie asked.
"Which part? I said a bunch of things." Sam not getting the hint.
"You know." Freddie trying to tiptoe around it.
"Still don't know which part, you're going to have to elaborate." Sam looked off to the side.
"The part where you said I was the only boy you ever loved." Freddie spat out.
"Oh.. That part.. Well you already know. I was trying to make a point to Cat. To win the argument. I also mentioned that you were in love with me and you said "now wait a second" remember?" Sam reiterated.
"So that's all it was? For you to make a point?" Freddie asked.
"Yeah." Sam simply said
"And nothing else?" Freddie continued to make sense of it.
"Huh?" Sam asked confused. "I don't know what you're getting at."
Freddie took a small breath preparing for what he was about to say "Sam… When I told you I loved you when we were in L.A. It wasn't exactly a lie…"
"What?"
"I love you." Freddie admitted. "I always have and I never stopped."
Freddie suddenly felt a wave of courage was over him. He was never the one to be bold and take risks. But being with Sam made him go out of his comfort zone. Something he wasn't able to do before. She gave him strength.
"I realized it the night you left for L.A. I came looking for you to tell you how I felt. But by the time I got there. Your mom told me you had already gone. I thought I had lost you forever. And I didn't want to be that guy that stopped you from doing what made you happy so I went back home and waited hoping that one day you'll come back when you were ready." He explained.
"For a while I thought my feelings would subside, but they got stronger and I thought about you everyday. Then Cat called saying that you got hurt so I dropped everything to go see you. For so long I wanted to see you and hear your voice and when I did. I felt like nothing else mattered, but you."
Sam stared out into the empty space in front of her and was silent. Freddie felt like his heart split into two.
"I'm sorry.." Freddie quickly apologized, "I get it if you don't feel the same way. I didn't mean to throw this in your face so fast. If you want we can just forget about what I sa-"
"I wasn't completely honest with you." Sam blurted out.
Freddie looked at her confused, "What?"
"I was lying when I said I was exaggerating to make a point." Sam took a small breath before continuing, "Truth is, you were the only guy I ever loved." Sam turned to Freddie, "I still love you too. Always have. Always did."
Freddie scooted closer to Sam, put his right arm around her waist and softly kissed her.
Sam was caught off guard and was shocked, but it didn't take her long for her to melt into the kiss. She put her right hand on his shoulder and deepened the kiss. As they slowly pulled away, all of the feelings came back like a ton of bricks. For the longest, Freddie never felt complete until Sam was back in his life.
Freddie looked deep into her blue eyes and asked her, "Do you want to be my girlfriend again? Give us another try?"
Sam took a second, "What? Do you want to?"
"Uh-huh." He nodded as he looked at her lovingly.
"Yeah, I would like that." Sam smiled looking back into his brown eyes.
Freddie and Sam went back to their normal sitting positions. Freddie was ecstatic inside, but he didn't want to show it in front of Sam so played it cool and he changed the subject.
"So… You love me?" Freddie slyly asked.
Sam groaned and replied, "Don't push your luck. I'm not saying it twice Benson. You heard me the first time."
"Fair enough." He gave a small side smile at Sam. "Do you want to stay up watching The Zone?"
"Oh you mean that killer zombie movie? Will there be popcorn?" Sam asked.
Freddie laughed, Oh how he missed his blonde headed demon, "Yeah, there will be plenty."
"Alright I'm in, what are we waiting for?" Sam turned to go back inside Freddie's apartment.
Freddie took a moment to himself before trailing after Sam. He couldn't believe it, The girl of his dreams is back in his life and she loves him too.
Sam poked her head back out of his window, "Hey you coming? Popcorn isn't going to pop itself."
"Yeah, I'm coming." Freddie gave a side smile before going back inside following Sam.
*August 11, 2014| Ridgeway Junior High School| 7:05 A.M.*
"See it's not so bad." Carly opened the school door for Sam. Sam walked in observing the halls and the ceiling of Ridgeway like she hasn't been the outside world for one hundred years.
"Yeah, it's not so bad." Sam quickly turned around and tried to make a run for it.
"Nuh-uh! You're not going anywhere!" Carly tried to guard the door and grabbed onto Sam's arm.
"But I want to sleep." Sam groaned as she dragged her feet all the way to their lockers.
"You always want to sleep. You knew what you signed up for when you asked to come back remember?" Carly laughed.
"Yeah I know. I forgot how annoying mornings are. You know I'm not a morning person." Sam reminded Carly.
"Come on it'll be fun. Besides it's our last year which means we can sorta relax now that we finished all of our core classes." Carly mentioned.
"Relax? I've been relaxing." Sam admitted.
Carly and Sam's conversation was interrupted by Gibby running towards them. "Hey guys! Guess what they're serving for lunch later?"
"Tuna sandwiches?" Carly answered.
"No! Spaghetti and a huge meatball." Gibby said excitedly.
"Well looks like we're going to have to run to the lunchroom later to get there first Carls." Sam looked at Carly and raised her eyebrow.
"Of course." Carly said.
"Hey there." Freddie joined the group and made his way over to Sam putting both his hands on the sides of her waist.
"Hey there baby." Sam smiled as she gave Freddie a small kiss on the lips. After their quick kiss. Freddie turned around to face Carly and Gibby while draping his right arm over Sam's shoulder with a smile on his face.
"Oh my gosh, since when did this happen?" Carly asked in a shocking tone.
"Yesterday night." Freddie answered.
"Wait. You guys are back together? Man how long was I gone for?" Gibby asked confusedly.
"Doesn't matter how long. I'm happy for you guys to be together." Carly looked at Freddie and Sam in awe.
BELL RINGS
"Ugh. You know what that means. Gotta cram all that info for the big English Literature test in Briggs." Sam began to walk with Carly, Freddie, and Gibby.
"Or I could just write down the info." A little light bulb clicked inside her head. "I'll meet you guys in class. See ya." Sam ran off to class and Gibby followed.
Carly amused shakes her head before following Sam and Gibby, but she felt Freddie's hand pulling her arm back.
"Hey Carly, can I talk to you?" Freddie asked.
"Sure. What's going on?" Carly asked with concern.
"I just wanted to say thank you for helping Sam and I out. I really owe you one." Freddie said.
"Awe no problem, I'm really happy for you guys Freddie. Sam is my best friend. It's nice to see her smile at something other than ham." Carly divulged.
"You and me both." Freddie agreed.
"Oh yeah I forgot to ask you. Spill the deets. How did you and Sam get back together?" Carly curiously asked.
"Well she came over my place and we talked." Freddie stated.
"You guys talked?" Carly pushed for specific details.
"Well I talked, I told her I was still in love with her." Freddie looked sheepishly down to the ground as the redness tint flared up in his cheeks.
"Oh my gosh. What did she say?" Carly was shocked.
"She told me she loved me back." Freddie answered.
"No way! I thought you would have to get it out of her." Carly said in disbelief.
"I know I thought so too. But I took your advice of talking to her and expressing my feelings and I don't know I guess it worked cause Sam was honest with me when I was honest with her." Freddie replied.
"Aww I shouldn't take all the credit. You went out of your way to tell Sam how you felt and it paid off. I'm really proud of you for that." Carly was in awe.
"Thanks and hey if you need anything. Formulas for a test, studying, or anything. I got your back. I really owe you one." Freddie offered.
"Actually now that you mentioned it. I need some guy advice." Carly admitted.
"Alright sure. What type of guy problem?" Freddie ready to help Carly out.
"Finding the perfect gift for a guy." Carly finally told him.
"Nice. You scored a date?" Freddie looked at her quizzically.
"Well I'm re-scoring a date." Carly replied.
"What do you mean?" Freddie asked still confused.
"Remember Griffin?" Carly asked.
Freddie tried to hold in his laugh remembering the incident with his Pee Wee Babies collection.
"Yeah I remember." Freddie exhaled and prevented himself from laughing, but Carly took notice.
"Hey it's not funny. I'm actually serious here." Carly smiled and chuckled.
"Okay. Okay. I'm listening." Freddie now paying attention.
Carly continued the story, "So I ran into him at Crown Ridge Mall. I was with Spencer helping him pick out new pants cause he shrunk them all in the washing machine."
"Wait so he shrunk all of his pants?" Freddie looked at Carly in disbelief.
"Yeah, he saw an ad on the TV about a powdered chemical that helps your clothes smell fresh for months no matter how many times you wear it. It worked, but he forgot to read the part where it may or may not shrink your clothes." Carly described.
"Ooh. Yikes." Freddie commented.
"Tell me about it. While I was waiting for Spencer to try on the jeans he picked out. I turned around and bumped into Griffin. I thought he was going to tell me off and how much he hated me, but he stuck around and we started talking."
"Then what happened?" Freddie listening to Carly.
"I apologized to him for treating him the way I did about his Pee Wee Babies collection and he apologized for barging in my apartment when we had that huge power out. We started to text again and hung out once at the Groovy Smoothie. " Carly explained.
"So what's the issue?" Freddie trying to figure out Carly's problem.
Carly took a deep breath before answering Freddie. "The issue is I'm starting to have feelings for him again. I realized how shallow I was for letting him go over a hobby that he enjoys. It may not be cool to a lot of people, but it was cool to him and I wrecked that. I feel really stupid."
"Don't say that. You're not stupid Carly. It happens sometimes, it just takes time to realize what went down. It takes a lot of courage to admit that you were wrong." Freddie comforted her.
"Yeah you're right. I just don't know if he would give me another chance considering the fact that he heard when Sam and I were making fun of him and didn't know he was listening in." Carly recounted the event.
"Just talk to him. I'm sure he would be interested in what you have to say. He doesn't hate you which is a good sign." Freddie advised Carly.
"Thanks Freddie. I feel like it's appropriate to fix it with Griffin along with a "I'm sorry" present too. Any ideas what I should get him?"
"Well you don't want to get him something that is too forward like a watch considering you guys are friends and trying to work through your friendship. I say get him cologne? Something that smells nice and it's something that he can use." Freddie suggested.
"There's a new cologne and perfume store called Fragrance Mania that opened up at the Crown Ridge Mall. They sell high quality colognes and perfumes for cheap. It's a bang for your buck. You might want to try there."
"Wow I haven't even thought about cologne. I thought about getting him printed socks. I'm a terrible gift giver. I'm glad I asked you before I bought those socks. Thanks Freddie a lot for your input. I don't know what I would've done." Carly sighed in relief.
"Hey no problem, what are friends for?" Freddie said.
Carly gave an appreciating smile at Freddie before she remembered they had to go to class. "You want to get to class? We should go before Briggs leaves the teacher's lounge."
"Yeah let's go. If Briggs sees us coming late to class especially on a test day she might as well burst into flames." Freddie joked.
"Break a leg on the test. It's going to be a brutal one." Carly warned Freddie.
"You know I got this Carly. I always do." Freddie sarcastically brags about his academic performance.
"We'll see about that. Let's make a deal. If you get an A, I'll give you twenty dollars. If you get lower than an A, you have to give me twenty bucks." Carly offered.
"Alright deal. You're so on." Freddie accepted the challenge.
Carly and Freddie continued their conversation about Brigg's test while walking down the hall and all the way to Brigg's classroom until their voices decreased as they made it closer to the classroom and eventually the hallway was filled with silence.
