I know I promised weekly updates but that was before I started a new job and moved again in the past two weeks. Getting back on track though, and there will be an update this Friday.
"Hey farm girl!"
I wince, and his eyes narrow in sympathy. "Sorry. And more sorry I can't help you. I gave that water stuff up a long time ago, and that part I'm not sorry about," he adds defensively. "Hailey is worth it."
"It's not that. I need a curse." I mutter.
Though he claims to be a life wizard, he pauses. His eyes see far too much, I think. "What kind of curse?"
"The ugly kind."
The lines of his smile around his eyes are tight. "You and I are far too good looking to perform such a curse. You need to get out in the sun soon or you'll get all pale. Though you do a lot more these days, don't you, watching the ocean?"
His skin IS radiant, like the glow from too much sunscreen, but from every single inch of skin, even in shade. I guess it is pretty in it's own way. I prefer the radiance of darkness myself.
I nod, satisfied, and he breaks into a real smile, each of his teeth shining like mini suns. Or maybe they are the sun. The magic of someone like Hailey towards her lover is not to be underestimated.
Evelyn calls from their house and he runs home for dinner. How easy it is as the years slip by to call someone once a brother a son and once a son a grandchild. It is easier still to forget that they began as none of those things.
I head home, fear tightening around my lungs as I prepare for our arranged meeting tomorrow at the beach.
