Makoto and Kyoko were sitting on the sofa within the Headmaster's office. Jin was out waiting for Fuhito and Makoto's family to arrive.
It was late in the afternoon, and Makoto feared it would be his last afternoon if his mother got her hands on him.
"Hey Kirigiri, it's been nice knowing you," Makoto said quietly.
"Everything will be ok," Kyoko replied. "Once we can talk to your mother together, then we can gain her support."
"I hope you're right, Kirigiri," Makoto sighed. "I've been thinking about Maizono's question in the past few days."
"About the sex of the child?"
"Yeah, I know it's a long time away, but do you have any names for the kid if it's a boy or girl?"
"No, I haven't," Kyoko replied. "My mind has been focused on other matters. What about you?"
"Nah, I'm the same. I'm thinking more about my mother than thinking of baby names."
The door opened, Makoto and Kyoko turned their head towards the door to see Komaru walk, following behind her was her parents. Then Fuhito walked in, followed by Jin, who closed the door.
Mrs Naegi's eyes zoned in on Makoto. The latter looked back for a few seconds before putting his head down.
"Komaru," Mr Naegi said. "Stand next to Makoto."
"Ok," Komaru replied, not wanting to more hassle.
"I will sit on the desk," Jin said as he grabbed his chair and moved to the coffee table, which was placed next to the sofa and armchair.
"Sir, Madam," Fuhito said, referring to Makoto's parents. "You can take the armchair and Jin's chair. I will use the guest chair at the desk.
Mrs Naegi sat down in the armchair, Mr Naegi sat down in Jin's chair. Lastly, Fuhito pulled the guest chair away from the desk and placed it next to Mr Naegi. He sat down, and if he had a knife, he could cut the tension in half.
"Why?" Mrs Naegi asked. "Makoto, why?"
"It was a mistake," Makoto replied, looking down at the floor. "I'm sorry."
"Sorry, isn't going to cut it! You don't have a job, a house! Explain to me why you thought it was a good idea to have sex without protection?"
Makoto didn't reply.
"Kyoko," Fuhito said softly as he folded his arms.
"Hello, grandfather," Kyoko replied, looking at him.
"I have spoken to your father in length about what has happened. I'm not angry or annoyed. But I'm upset that you've done something stupid for your age. How do you tend to fix this problem? As Mrs Naegi has pointed out, you both don't have jobs nor own a home."
"Naegi and I haven't thought that far ahead yet. Our pressing concern was to tell all of you. Then we would start thinking about we are going to get out of this mess cleanly."
"Do you wish to be a detective still?" Fuhito asked.
"Yes, I wish to follow in your footsteps, grandfather, although it may take me a bit longer to be a detective."
"I see," Fuhito nodded, then he looked at Makoto. "What about you?"
"Me?" Makoto said.
"Yes, did you have any plans of a career once you left this school?"
"No," Makoto said, shaking his head. "I don't have any standout talent like Kirigiri or the others in my class have. I don't know what I was going to do once my two years were up. But with the child due, I'm going to start looking for jobs and leave this place."
Makoto's family and Kyoko's eyes widened and looked at him.
"I got Kirigiri pregnant, so it's my responsibility to get a job so I can make money quickly and provide a roof over our heads and put food on the table. And when Kirigiri is ready, she can be the detective she always dreamed of being."
"Naegi," Kyoko said, surprised and touched by his words.
Fuhito looked at Jin, and the latter shrugged his shoulders. Fuhito turned his head back to the young couple.
"Well, I'm happy," Fuhito said. "I thought you would be a guy that gets my granddaughter pregnant and take no responsibility-"
Mrs Naegi shot up to her feet. "HOW! How dare YOU think of my baby boy like that!"
"Please, madam, I wasn't finished," Fuhito replied, looking at Mrs Naegi before returning his look to Makoto. "You have proven to me that my granddaughter will be in safe hands."
"But sir, I've only given you words, trusting me that quickly is-"
"Naegi, I've been a detective all of my life, I'm good at reading people, and I know you meant every word. Plus, Kyoko wouldn't be sitting beside you if she knew you were going to jump ship."
Makoto turned his head towards Kyoko. "You must have been reading me every step of the way?"
"Yes, you are like an open book. You are easy to read, but it's not a bad thing, I will say," Kyoko replied.
Mrs Naegi sat back down, and she began to cry. "Why Makoto? Why did you have to grow up so quickly? It only felt like yesterday I was holding you in my arms after giving birth to you."
"Mum," Makoto sighed.
"I was so angry with you because you had done something so reckless, but with you leaving home to go to this school. It filled me with fear that something bad would happen to you, and I was proven right."
"With all due respect," Kyoko replied. "Nothing bad has happened to your son. In fact, he has made friends with everyone in our class. Even our most stubborn classmates have taken a liking to your son. If Naegi were ever in trouble, he would have his classmates to help him out."
"But my baby boy is going to be a father by the end of the year," Mrs Naegi sobbed.
"Mum, can you stop calling me your baby boy in front of people!" Makoto said, annoyed. "I'm 18 years old. I'm near enough a grown adult. I'm in a relationship and also going to be a father soon."
Komaru gently elbows Makoto in the sides. "Shut up!" She said quietly.
However, Makoto ignored his younger sister. "Mum, how am I expect to make it in the world when you are so overbearing? Yes, I've made a mistake that I can admit, but everyone makes mistakes. But I want to learn from mine and grow as a person."
Mrs Naegi let out a sigh. "You are right. I've been overbearing. Your father pointed that out to me the night before. But I must look after my children."
"Mum, I don't want you breathing down my neck for my stupidity. I want you to be someone that I can lean on and give me advice on how to be a good parent."
"I can do that," Mrs Naegi said softly.
"As can I," Mr Naegi said.
"Thank you," Makoto smiled. "I know things might be rough, but what I needed was to hear you two support."
"I'm still angry with you," Mrs Naegi replied. "However, we can't change the past. I will do as I can as your mother to help you."
"Same here," Mr Naegi said. "Although I will admit, I'm proud that I will become a grandfather."
"Me too," Jin said. "Once I got over the shock, I was crying with joy."
"Father?" Kyoko said, shocked.
"Kyoko," Fuhito said. "When is your first ultrasound?"
"It will be roughly in two weeks," Kyoko replied.
"Two weeks?" Mrs Naegi said, shocked. "That's means you are a month pregnant?"
"Yes, roughly," Kyoko replied. "I will need to get in contact with the hospital to book an ultrasound appointment."
"Once you do," Fuhito said. "Let me know the date and time, and I will take you and Naegi to the hospital."
Thank you for reading.
This is not the strongest chapter by far I will admit, I've always struggled with a big group talking to each other.
I DON'T OWN ANYTHING.
