Chapter 5: Portkey to the Quidditch World Cup
~August 25, The Burrow~
Yoni was laying very snug between Fred and George with Harena by their feet and the wolf pups under the bed, when Mrs Weasley entered the twins' bedroom very quietly and tiptoed towards their pushed together beds.
Mrs Weasley shook both Fred and George awake on their shoulders and whispered: "Fred, George, time to get up."
Two large dishevelled shapes slowly rose in bed.
"'S' time already?" Fred asked groggily.
Mrs Weasley then only noticed that Harena was laying at the foot of the bed, that the three wolf pups were underneath their bed and that Yoni was sleeping between Fred and George and didn't know why she was sleeping here, while she normally should be sleeping in the tent with their foreign guests.
George gently and calmly shook Yoni awake by her shoulder and she looked blankly at him with her small sleepy eyes.
"It's time to get up." He said softly and Yoni nodded, before rubbing her eyes.
"I'm going to wake up the rest." Mrs Weasley whispered as she walked back to the door. "I'll see you downstairs."
Mrs Weasley left the room to go wake up Ron, Ginny, Harry, Hermione and the foreign guests.
Fred, George and Yoni crawled out of the pushed together beds and dressed in silence, because they were too sleepy to talk. When they were dressed, they left the room followed by Harena and the wolf pups, and went down the stairs, while yawning and stretching down to the kitchen. Behind them, Ron and Harry came down the stairs and together they went into the kitchen.
Mrs Weasley was stirring the contents of a large pot on the stove, while Mr Weasley was sitting at the table and checked a sheaf of large parchment tickets. He looked up as the Potter siblings and his three youngest sons entered and spread his arms so that they could see his clothes more clearly. He was wearing what appeared to be a golfing jumper and a very old pair of jeans, slightly too big for him and held up with a thick leather belt.
"What do you think?" He asked anxiously. "We're supposed to go incognito. Do I look like a Muggle, Yoni, Harry?"
"Yeah." Harry said smiling. "Very good."
Yoni nodded in agreement, as she sat down at the kitchen table with the others.
"Where are Bill, Charlie and Per... Per... Percy?" George said while failing to stifle a huge yawn.
"Well, they're Apparating, aren't they?" Mrs Weasley said while heaving the large pot over to the table and starting to ladle porridge into bowls. "So they can have a bit of a lay-in."
The Potter siblings knew that Apparating was very difficult. It meant disappearing from one place and reappearing almost instantly in another.
"So they're still in bed?" Fred said grumpily and pulled his bowl of porridge towards him. "Why can't we Apparate too?"
"Because you're not of age and you haven't got your test." Mrs Weasley snapped. "And where have Hermione and Ginny got to?"
She bustled out of the kitchen and they heard her climbing the stairs.
"You have to pass a test to Apparate?" Harry asked curiously.
"Oh yes." Mr Weasley said, tucking the tickets safely into the back pocket of his jeans. "The Department of Magical Transportation had to fine a couple of people the other day for Apparating without a licence. Apparation isn't easy and when it's not done properly it can lead to nasty complications. This pair, I'm talking about, went and splinched themselves."
Everyone, even Yoni, around the table winced, except Harry.
"Er... splinched?" Harry asked frowning.
"They left half of themselves behind." Mr Weasley explained, while spooning large amounts of treacle onto his porridge. "So of course, they were stuck. They couldn't move either way and had to wait for the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad to sort them out. That meant a fair old bit of paperwork. I can tell you that. What with the Muggles who spotted the body parts they had left behind..."
Yoni had a shiver shot through her spine when she heard that.
"Were they okay?" He asked startled, but also worried.
"Oh yes," Mr Weasley said matter-of-factly. "but they got a heavy fine and I don't think they'll be trying it again in a hurry. You don't mess around with Apparition. There are plenty of adult wizards and witches who don't bother with it. They prefer brooms... slower, but also much safer."
"But Bill, Charlie and Percy can all do it?" Harry asked curiously.
"Charlie had to take the test twice." Fred said grinning. "He failed the first time. He Apparated five miles south of where he meant to be. Right on top of some poor old woman doing her shopping, remember?"
"Yes, well he passed the second time." Mrs Weasley said, while marching back into the kitchen amid hearty sniggers.
"Percy only passed two weeks ago." George said. "He's been Apparating downstairs every morning since. Just to prove he can."
"Well, that's pretty childish, lazy and annoying." Yoni said honest and thoughtful. "If I pass my Apparition test, I wouldn't Apparate through the entire house all the time."
There were footsteps down the passageway and Hermione and Ginny came into the kitchen. Both were looking pale and drowsy.
"Why do we have to be up so early?" Ginny said complaining, as she rubbed her eyes and sat down at the table.
"Because we've got a bit of a walk to do." Mr Weasley said.
"Walk?" Harry asked surprised. "Are we walking to the World Cup?"
Yoni thought that that was impossible, because she knew that such a large and global event would attract many wizards and witches. So the World Cup was being held somewhere far away from the Muggle population, so they wouldn't have to erase the memories of many Muggles all the time. The Ministry of Magic must have taken the necessary steps to ensure that the Statute of Secrecy wouldn't be violated.
"No, no. That's miles away." Mr Weasley said smiling. "We only need to walk a short way. It's just that it's very difficult for a large number of witches and wizards to congregate without attracting Muggle attention. We have to be very careful about how we travel at the best of times and on a huge occasion like the Quidditch World Cup."
~In the tent~
While Mr Weasley told those, who were having breakfast in The Burrow's kitchen, how they were going to the Quidditch World Cup, the Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask sat dressed at the table in the living part of the tent having breakfast.
Mrs Weasley had first woken them up en gave them breakfast.
When they were all awake, they had noticed that Yoni was empty and that her cat, wolf pups and Yoni were nowhere to be seen.
"Why wouldn't Yoni have slept here?" Rini asked curiously and innocently.
"That's a good question, Rini. I don't know why, but I have a hunch." Darien said with a smile, but glared at Amara.
Amara saw the angry look and glared back, as she put her spoon hard down onto the table.
"What!" She snapped. "You think that's my fault?!"
"Maybe, yeah." Lita said heatedly, as she supported Darien and had the same thoughts as he. "Who would call an unknown person a monster, who is unpacking in the next room?! You certainly had no right to do that!"
"I think Yoni must have felt quite offended when you called her a monster." Amy said thoughtfully and calculated. "She will never trust us and never want to be friends with us."
"Amy is right about that. You should have called her a possible Youma or should have waited until she had left the tent." Trista said calmly. "We are here by invitation and I hope you make up for it soon. We can better be friends with them than enemies."
Amara grunted and glared at Trista.
Michelle put a hand on Amara's arm and said then very calmly: "Amara, we only need to be friendly, while we are here. We can use more allies rather than enemies."
"Who knows, we might become friends." Mina said hopefully.
"Oh yeah, I want to be friends with Yoni." Rini said enthusiastically.
"Me too." Hotaru said in agreement.
"Why?" Amara asked suspiciously. "We don't even know her."
"We really want to get to know her too." Rini replied.
"We can trust her and she feels safe." Hotaru said honestly.
"Yes, Hotura is right. I sensed that she can be very protective." Raye said calmly. "According to the flames, she can be trusted and there would also be a fire inside her."
"Hmmm, that fire could be dangerous for us." Michelle said thoughtfully.
"Not according to the visions of the flames. The visions indicate that her fire will be more dangerous to her enemies than to us if we are allies of her." Raye said with a rather evil grin.
"Well, we better be friends with her." Darien said with a smile and glanced at his girlfriend.
Serena was sleeping at the table and had largely not heard of the conversation. She had been able to spoon a few mouthfuls of porridge, while she was groggy and then she fell back asleep. She really wasn't someone who would get up early.
After breakfast they would go to the Quidditch World Cup together with Mr Weasley, Darien only hoped Serena would be more awake by then.
~Back in the kitchen of The Burrow~
Everyone, who was sitting at the kitchen table, was still listening to Mr Weasley's explanation about the Quidditch World Cup's location.
"George!" Mrs Weasley suddenly said sharply, causing everybody to jump.
"What?" George said as innocent as possible, but that didn't deceive anyone.
"What is that in your pocket?" She asked sharply and looked at him in suspicion.
"Nothing!" George quickly answered.
"Don't you lie to me!" She said furiously and very stern.
Mrs Weasley pointed her wand at George's pocket and said: "Accio!"
Several small bright-coloured objects zoomed out of George's pocket. He tried to grab them but missed them and they sped right into Mrs Weasley's outstretched hand.
"We told you to destroy them!" Mrs Weasley said furiously and held up what were unmistakeable more Ton-Tongue Toffees. "We told you to get rid of the lot! Go on, both of you empty your pockets!"
It was an unpleasant scene. The twins had evidently been trying to smuggle as many toffees out of the house as possible and it was only by using her Summoning Charm that Mrs Weasley managed to find them all.
"Accio! Accio! Accio!" She shouted and toffees zoomed from all sorts of unlikely places, including the lining of George's jacket and the turn-ups of Fred's jeans.
Yoni sighed softly and looked away somewhat ashamed. She should have known that Fred and George would do something like that and wasn't really surprised by that. She knew that the twins had been working on that for a long time and they were very proud of it. She knew that Fred and George developed these things to spread joy all around. Which she thought was a good idea.
"We spent six months developing those!" Fred shouted at his mother, as she threw the toffees away.
Yoni looked shocked when she saw Mrs Weasley do that.
"Oh, a fine way to spend six months!" Mrs Weasley shrieked angrily. "No wonder you didn't get more O.W.L.s!"
Before Mr Weasley departed with them, Mrs Weasley was able to take many of the Ton-Tongue Toffees away from the twins.
After Mrs Weasley had done that, everyone continued to eat their porridge.
Mrs Weasley then turned her attention to Yoni, because she really wanted to know why the young witch had slept with Fred and George rather than in the tent.
"Yoni, why did you spend the night with Fred and George?" She asked calmly and kindly.
Yoni quickly glance at Fred and George from the corner of her eye and replied: "Well, I couldn't sleep very well in the tent and went to sleep with Fred and George, because I didn't want to disturb the others in the tent if I couldn't sleep there."
Mrs Weasley carefully listened to her explanation and nodded in understanding.
"It is understandable that you went to spend the night with Fred and George! I'm glad that you at least had some sleep." She said calmly.
Yoni smiled and finished her porridge.
"Oh, and leave Harena and the wolf pups here. I'll take very good care of them." Mrs Weasley promised to Yoni, who nodded in agreement.
"Okay, it's time to go." Mr Weasley announced as he rose from the kitchen table and everyone followed suit.
With what had happened to the twins, the atmosphere wasn't friendly as they made their departure.
Mrs Weasley was still furious, as she kissed her husband on the cheek. She wasn't nearly as angry as Fred and George, who had each hoisted their backpacks onto their backs and walked out without a word to her.
Yoni quickly said goodbye to Harena and the wolf pups, before taking her backpack and followed Fred and George out.
"Well, have a lovely time." Mrs Weasley said calmly to the rest and at that moment the Sailor Guardians and Tuxedo Mask emerged from the tent.
"And behave yourselves!" She called after the twins' retreating backs, but they didn't look back nor answer.
Mr Weasley set off together with Ron, Harry, Hermione and Ginny across the dark yard after Fred, George and Yoni, while being followed by their foreign guests.
"I'll send Bill, Charlie and Percy along around midday." Mrs Weasley quickly informed her husband.
It was chilly and the moon was still out. Only a dull greenish tinge along the horizon to their right showed that daybreak was drawing closer.
The Potter siblings thought about the thousands of witches and wizards who were flocking to the Quidditch World Cup.
Harry sped up and Yoni slowed down a little, so they could talk to Mr Weasley.
"So how does everyone get there without all the Muggles noticing?" Harry asked curiously.
"It's been a massive organisational problem." Mr Weasley began his explanation. "The trouble is about a hundred thousand witches and wizards turn up to the World Cup and of course we just haven't got a magical site big enough to accommodate them all. There are places Muggles can't penetrate, but imagine trying to pack a hundred thousand witches and wizards into Diagon Alley or platform nine and three quarters. So we had to find a nice deserted moor and set up as many anti-Muggle precautions as possible. The whole Ministry's been working on it for months. Firstly, of course, we have to stagger the arrival. People with cheaper tickets have to arrive two weeks beforehand. A limited number use Muggle transport, but we can't have too many clogging up their buses and trains... remember witches and wizards are coming from all over the world. Some Apparate of course, but we have to set up safe points for them to appear... well away from Muggles. I believe there's a handy wood they're using as the Apparition point. For those who don't want to Apparate or can't, we use Portkeys. They're objects that are used to transport witches and wizards from one spot to another at a prearranged time. You can do large groups at a time if you need to. There have been two hundred Portkeys placed at strategic points around Britain and the nearest one to us is up the top of Stoatshead Hill. So that's where we're headed."
Yoni glanced over her shoulder as imperceptibly as possible and saw that the foreign guests were also listening very interested to Mr Weasley's explanation.
Mr Weasley pointed ahead of them, where a large black mass rose beyond the village of Ottery St. Catchpole.
"What sort of objects are Portkeys?" Rini asked curiously.
"Well Rini, they can be anything." Mr Weasley explained. "Unobtrusive things obviously, so Muggles don't go picking them up and playing with them. Stuff they'll just think is litter."
They trudged down the dark dank lane towards the village, the silence broken only by their footsteps. The sky lightened very slowly, as they made their way through the village, and its inky blackness diluting to deepest blue.
Yoni rubbed her frozen hands over her arms to warm up a bit. Even her feet were frozen. So for her to get a little bit warmer, Fred and George had each put an arm over her shoulders to share some of their warmth with her.
Mr Weasley kept checking his watch.
They didn't have breath to spare for talking, as they began to climb Stoatshead Hill. They stumbled occasionally in hidden rabbit holes or slipped on thick black tuffets of grass. Each breath they took was sharp in their chest and their legs were starting to seize up when at last their feet found level ground.
"Whew." Mr Weasley panted, while taking off his glasses and wiped them on his sweater. "Well, we've made good time. We've got ten minutes..."
Hermoine was one of the last to reach the top along with Serena and clearly had stitches in her side, as she pressed her hand against her waist.
Serena, on the other hand, looked really exhausted. Even more so than when she had left the tent with her friends. When she reached the top, she fell onto her knees and fell then sprawled in the grass face down.
Rini was sitting on Darien's shoulders when she reached the top and was then put back down on the ground there.
"Now we just need the Portkey." Mr Weasley said, while putting his glasses back on and looked around at the ground. "It won't be big... come on..."
They spread out and started to search, while Darien tried to wake up Serena again. However, they only had been at it for a couple of minutes, when a shout rent the still air.
"Over here, Arthur! Over here, son! We've got it!" Someone shouted and it startled Serena, causing her to get up again quickly.
"I'm awake! I'm awake!" She said startled, as she looked around in alarm. "I wasn't sleeping at all!"
Her friends, along with Fred and George, had to laugh softly at her reaction.
Two tall figures were silhouetted against the starry sky on the other side of the hilltop.
Yoni looked at them a little suspicious and cursed herself for not having noticed them sooner, as she moved closer to Fred and George. She also noticed that the little girl, Rini, had moved closer to her, than anyone else from the party she came with to England.
"Amos!" Mr Weasley said smiling and strode over to the man, who had shouted.
The rest of them followed, some more guarded than others.
Mr Weasley was shaking hands with a ruddy-faced wizard with a scrubby brown beard, who was holding a mouldy-looking old boot in his other hand.
Yoni had to pull her nose up in disgust, when she saw that boot and suspected that she wasn't the only one who thought it was dirty.
"This is Amos Diggory, everyone." Mr Weasley said enthusiastically. "He works for the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. And I think you know his son, Cedric?"
Cedric Diggory was an extremely handsome boy of around seventeen. He was captain and Seeker of the Hufflepuff house Quidditch team at Hogwarts.
"Well, not everyone knows him, Mr Weasley." Yoni informed him calmly. "Only those who go to Hogwarts know him."
"Ah yes, that's right." Mr Weasley said calmly. "Thank you, Yoni."
Yoni just smiled and waved it away with her hand.
"Well for everyone who doesn't know him, this is Cedric Diggory." Mr Weasley introduced Cedric to his foreign guests.
"Hi." Cedric said waving, who looked at the others.
"Hi." Everyone said back politely, except for Fred and George.
Fred and George merely nodded. They had never quite forgiven Cedric for beating their team Gryffindor in the first Quidditch match of the previous year.
"Was it a long walk, Arthur?" Amos asked curiously.
"Not too bad." Mr Weasley said shrugging. "We live just on the other side of the village there. And you?"
"We had to get up at two, didn't we Ced? I tell you, that I'll be glad when he's got his Apparition test. Still, I'm not complaining. I wouldn't miss the Quidditch World Cup for a sackful of Galleons... and the tickets cost about that. Mind you that it looks like I got off easy..." Mr Diggory said, as he peered good-naturedly at the three Weasley brothers, the Potter siblings, Hermione, Ginny and Mr Weasley's foreign guests. "Are all these yours, Arthur?"
"No, no, only the redheads." Mr Weasley said, pointing out his children and began then to point at the others, as he introduced them each. "These are my foreign guests; Rini, Serena, Darien, Amy, Raye, Lita, Mina, Hotaru, Amara, Michelle and Trista. That's Hermione, a friend of Ron's... and that's Harry, one of his best friends. This is Harry's older sister, Yoni and she is Fred and George's best friend..."
"Merlin's beard." Amos Diggory said with large eyes. "Yoni? Harry? Yoni and Harry Potter?"
"Er... yeah." Harry said hesitantly.
Yoni was quite annoyed with how Mr Diggory reacted, when he just heard their names. She really didn't like how people would look at her and her brother curiously, when they met them for the very first time. She felt that those people liked to look at Harry's lightning-shaped scar on his forehead. She knew that Harry felt very uncomfortable with this when a lot of people did that.
"Ced's talked about you, of course, Harry." Amos Diggory said. "He told us all about playing against you last year. I said to him, I said: 'Ced, that'll be something to tell your grandchildren... that you've beaten Harry Potter!' But now he had to find something where he can beat Harry's big sister with."
Harry couldn't think of any reply to this and so he remained silent.
Fred and George were both scowling again.
Yoni glared at Mr Diggory and thought he just liked being able to embarrass her and her brother by saying that his son is so perfect, that he could do everything better than anyone. She felt that Mr Diggory was out to push Cedric as much as possible into the limelight probably to become famous too. Probably to suck like a leech from the Children-Who-lived fame.
Cedric looked slightly embarrassed.
"Harry fell from his broom, Dad." Cedric muttered quite embarrassed. "I told you. It was an accident..."
Yoni could clearly see that Cedric didn't think the same way as his father thought about the victory of that Quidditch match to make it a big deal out of it.
"Yes, but you didn't fall from your broom, did you?" Amos roared genially as he slapped his son on his back. "Always modest, our Ced! Always the gentleman, but the best man won. I'm sure Harry would say the same, wouldn't you Harry? One falls from his broom and the other stays on. Well, you don't need to be a genius to tell which one's the better flier!"
Now Yoni had had it with Mr Diggory's bragging. She could handle her loss very well and was also very sportive, but she felt that Mr Diggory now really had no right to criticize Harry's flying skills if he had never seen her brother fly.
"Cedric may have won the game against Gryffindor, but that wasn't because of his flying skills. I'm not saying he is a bad flier, but he was just lucky." Yoni said coolly. "If the Dementors hadn't left their post around the boundaries of the school grounds, then the game might have ended quite differently. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. The Dementors had attacked Harry, allowing Cedric to catch the Snitch. So the game wasn't won by excellent flying skill, but by dumb luck."
Mr Diggory looked at her in shock and it looked like he didn't even know what to say to that.
Fred and George both had a very malicious grin on their lips at the sight of Mr Diggory's face and were glad that Yoni pressed his nose onto the facts. They were also happy that the praising for Cedric's victory had finally stopped.
Harry threw his sister a grateful look with a smile.
The foreign guests were quite impressed by this. Amara even got a new deep form of respect for her.
Rini was giggling very softly behind her hands.
"I think it's almost time." Mr Weasley said quickly, as he pulled out his watch again. "Do you know whether we're waiting for any more, Amos?"
"No, the Lovegoods have been there for a week already and the Fawcetts couldn't get tickets." Mr Diggory said calmly and cast a nervous glance at Yoni. "There aren't any more of us in this area, are there?"
"Not that I know of." Mr Weasley said thoughtfully. "Yes, it's a minute off. We'd better get ready..."
He looked around at Yoni, Harry, Hermione and his foreign guests and quickly explained: "You just need to touch the Portkey. That's all. A finger will do..."
With difficulty owing to the bulky backpacks, that they were carrying on their backs, they all crowded around the old boot held out by Amos Diggory. They all stood there in a tight circle, which made them feel like sardines in a box, while a chill breeze swept over the hilltop. Nobody spoke.
The Potter siblings suddenly thought how odd this would look if a Muggle were to walk up here now... twenty-two people, including two grown men and a grown woman, clutching this manky old boot in the semi-darkness... waiting.
"Three..." Mr Weasley muttered with one eye still on his watch. "two... one..."
It all happened in a flash.
Yoni felt as though a hook, just behind her navel, had been suddenly jerked irresistibly forwards. Her feet had left the ground. She could feel Fred and George's shoulders banging into hers.
The entire group was speeding forwards into a howl of wind and swirling colours. Their forefinger was stuck to the boot, as though it was pulling them magnetically onwards and then...
Yoni's feet slammed into the ground.
Fred staggered into her, causing her to bump into George and together they fell awkwardly to the ground.
The Portkey hit the ground somewhere with a heavy thud and Yoni hoped it hadn't landed onto anyone's head.
Yoni was sandwiched between Fred and George and looked up.
To her dismay Mr Weasley, Mr Diggory and Cedric managed to stay on their feet, while everyone else was laying on the ground. She did notice that they did look very windswept.
"The seven past five from Stoatshead Hill." A voice said.
I hope you enjoyed it.
