Last chapter, and back to my attempts at humor! The other five were times where Mac & Co had to lie to Bozer, in this one they get to tell him the truth, now if he believes them is another story, lol!
Massive thanks to my amazing Beta and friend bkworm4life4, special thanks to the wonderful and talented Haven126 who inspired this story, and also to my friend Snowecat, thank you for all the wonderful feedback!
Without any further ado...
Bozer had gotten off work a few minutes ago and was in his room changing into something that didn't smell like grease, when he heard the front door open. Normally it wasn't something that concerned him, but Jack had been after he and Mac about not locking their door lately and Mac wasn't supposed to be home for a few more hours plus he was pretty sure he had locked the door after himself when he had come in.
A shouted, "I'm home," quickly put Bozer at ease. It was Mac's voice, and he could hear other voices as well, so probably Jack and Riley were with him. Bozer took a few more minutes to make sure he looked presentable for Riley. Homegirl was fine, and he wanted to put his best foot forward if he stood any chance at scoring another of those digits anytime in the near future.
Bounding out of his room he greeted them, "So why y'all home so ear-." He stopped abruptly at the sight of them. Riley's left arm was in a sling, Jack had an black brace on his right leg, and Mac had his left arm in a sling and his right foot in a hard boot and was balancing on a crutch. "What in the hell happened to you guys? I leave you alone for a few hours and you come back all banged up?" The three of them all started talking at the same time. Everybody was talking so fast and over each other that Bozer could only make out a few words. Holding up his hand he called out, "Okay, stop!" Once everybody was looking at him, "Go sit down, I'll bring you ice packs and snacks. Then one at a time you can fill me in on what happened." Mac huffed, Jack rolled his eyes, and Riley grumbled, but all three of them slowly made their way into the living room.
Bozer raided the freezer for the ice packs. With the way the three of them got injured he really needed to buy stock in ice packs because they were in constant use around the house. Once they were gathered he grabbed some of the water bottles they kept in the house, and the snack tray he had intended for later. With his arms full he made his way into the living room distributing ice packs and water. Once everybody was as comfortable as they could get Bozer sat on the hearth of the fireplace, "Okay, so who wants to go first?"
"It's all Jack's fault." Mac stated glaring at his friend.
"Me?" Jack pointed at himself, the picture of innocence, which was a huge indicator that something was up.
"Yes you!" Riley threw out. Then she winced and re-adjusted her ice pack. "If it wasn't for your crazy idea we wouldn't be here."
"You say crazy I say safety conscious." Jack snipped back.
"C'mon! Y'all gotta quit teasing me and tell me what happened." Bozer couldn't stand it anymore. The suspense was getting to him.
"So, it went like this," Jack started.
Several hours ago, at the Phoenix Foundation
Mac was in the lab working on one of his projects for the think tank side of the Phoenix Foundation while Riley was set up near him and working on mission reports, and Jack, well Jack was thumbing through some old magazines that he'd found lying around.
"Hey, did ya know that-" Jack started off.
"Don't you have something better to do?" Riley asked grumpily. "Like cleaning your gun or shooting targets or something?"
Jack smirked at her, "I'll have you know that my gun is very clean and I aced my quals like I do every year. I suppose there are some reports that need doin', but where's the fun in that?" He grinned at her, unrepentant of his annoying behavior. "As I was saying before did you know that California suffers about 10,000 earthquakes a year? That's like, a lot!"
Mac thought about it for a second and then shrugged, that number sounded about right. Riley sighed, she pointed at herself and Mac, "We're used to it being from California and all. You're the one that freaks out about earthquakes."
"It's just not natural the way the earth just wobbles around and all." Jack shuttered. "I didn't have to worry about all this back in Texas."
"Actually, Jack it's completely natural because of the movement for the tectonic plates. Don't worry about it though, here in California we've been drilled since we were kids on what to do in case of an earthquake." Mac tried to reassure his friend so he could go back to work and get his project finished.
Riley picked up the thread, "Yep, it was part of our drills at school, fire, lock-down, and earthquake. Not a big deal."
Mac saw Jack's face light up and just knew he wasn't going to like what Jack was about to day or get any more work done on his project.
"That's a great idea!" Jack said with a smile as he stood up and set the magazine he'd been reading on the table.
"What's a great idea?" Riley asked quizzically.
"A drill!"
"No, that's a horrible idea!" Riley stated.
Mac couldn't figure out Jack's logic and just stared at him in confusion. Jack sighed sounding like a teacher whose students just weren't getting it. "We should have an earthquake drill here, just in case something happens, so we can get out quick."
"I'm pretty sure Oversight made sure that the building was up to earthquake codes before we moved in here." Mac said confidently.
Riley wasn't so diplomatic, "You really were dropped on your head as a baby, weren't you Jack?"
"My sis swears it was only once, and native Californians aren't the only employees here, so maybe others like me aren't as uncaring about earthquakes as you too are."
"I knew you had to have been-" Riley started.
"Stop! Both of you!" Mac commanded not wanting another Jack/Riley war. They had been getting along better and Mac intended to keep it that way. He looked at Jack. "How about the three of us do a drill as a baseline then look up some guidelines on how quickly we need to be able to exit the building in case of a disaster. Then present it to Director Thornton and see what she has to say."
"Fine," he agreed.
"I was pretty much finished here anyway, and I still think this is a bad idea." Riley muttered as she powered down her laptop. She sighed, "Let's go ahead and get this over with." As they left the lab she added, "We are taking the elevator to the top floor though." She shook out her right leg, "The training sessions with Director Thornton are killing me."
Jack nodded in agreement and soon they were stepping off the elevator. "So, I guess we run down the steps and see how long it takes us?"
"School drills always said leave in an orderly fashion. Running will get people killed." Riley shrugged, "Or at least that was what my 3rd grade teacher used to say all the time."
"Quick walk?" Jack offered.
"I'll keep time." Mac volunteered. He checked his watch, "And…go."
The three of them calmly but quickly walked to the stairs and started making their way down. At first, they were silent, but that didn't last. After the second landing Riley moaned, "Why are we doing this again? My legs are killing me!"
"For safety!" Jack cheerfully called back.
Mac chuckled at the moan Riley let out, but he could hear her steps pick up behind him. They were about half way down when he heard her say, "Oh shi-" The rest was drowned out by Riley crashing into him. He didn't have do much more than put out his left hand to try to brace himself before he fell into Jack and the three of them lay in a heap on the fourth-floor landing.
"Get off of me," Jack moaned as he pushed Mac off.
Mac couldn't talk because of the pain in both his left arm and right leg. Riley had landed on his leg, while his arm had been smashed by Jack. He lay on his back with his eyes closed breathing deeply to try to dispel the pain. From above the sound of a door being opened echoed down the steps.
"Do I even want to know what you are doing?" It was the voice of Director Thornton, and her voice was as icy as ever.
"No," Mac managed to answer.
A sigh, "I suppose you are going to need the medics?" It was a rhetorical question, but Jack answered anyway.
"Well I'm pretty sure Mac could use the help…" Jack started off.
Riley snorted, "You also look like you could use a wheelchair old man."
"Who you callin' old?" Jack shot back as he started to get up.
"Enough!" Thornton commanded, "The medics will be here in a few minutes to take you to medical. Just…don't move." With a loud sigh and thud of the door she was gone. Mac opened his eyes. Riley was sitting on the bottom of the steps holding her wrist, while Jack sat across from him leaning against the wall with one of his legs outstretched. Using his good arm Mac leveraged his way up and sat across from Jack.
"I'm sorry, in my hurry my foot slipped," Riley started to apologize, but Jack cut her off.
"It's ok darlin' things happen. This is why we do drills." The door beside them opened and several members of the medical staff stepped into the small landing.
"We heard that you missed us so much that you decided to throw yourselves down the steps just to see us." Dr. Amy Quinn said with a broad smile.
"You know it," Jack returned the grin, but his face morphed into one of pain as he tried to struggle to his feet.
"I told you this was a bad idea," Riley said as she made her way to the medics while holding her wrist.
Dr. Quinn squatted by Mac, "So how you doin'?"
Mac gave her a half smirk, "I could be better."
She feigned a heart attack, "Did Angus MacGyver just admit that he wasn't in perfect health?" She clutched her chest tighter and reached up to the sky with one hand, "Elizabeth! I'm coming!" Jack laughed at that one. "Okay Mac, where's it hurting at?"
"Right ankle, left arm."
Quinn sucked in a sharp breath through her teeth, "Well Mac you did this up right."
Back to present
"Wait, wait, wait…." Bozer said laughing. "Are you trying to tell me that you got all of that by falling down the steps at work?"
Mac, Jack, and Riley all looked at each other and nodded. "Yeah," Mac confirmed.
"Really guys?" Bozer said with a grin and a shake of his head, "You expect me to believe that pile of lies?"
"Uh, yeah? Because it's the truth?" Jack added.
"So, Riley what really happened? Was it something top secret that I don't have the clearance for?" Bozer's eyes were excited as he laughed at his own joke.
"It happened just the way Mac said it did." Riley said.
With a sigh Bozer got up and took the now warm ice packs. "Well fine, then don't tell me. I'll go grab the heat packs. I think Mac left them in the garage."
As soon as he was out of earshot Jack spoke, "Of all of the whoppers we fed him over the years, the one story he questions is something that really happened? I don't get it man."
"If you really think about it Jack, it does sound quite crazy and almost unbelievable." Mac pointed out.
"Whatever. So who's up for a Die Hard marathon?" Jack grinned and picked up the remote. His request was met with a chorus of whines. "Great!" He hit the channel changer a few times, "Now how does this thing work again?"
The End
A/N 2: I hope you have enjoyed these little snippets. I have to admit I thoroughly enjoyed writing them.
Up next is the next part of my 3-way crossover (MacGyver, Stargate, & Supernatural) 'How Bozer joined the Stargate Program' Hope to have it up next Monday!
So with the potential series finale (#saveMacGyver) coming up this Friday I just wanted to thank y'all. Yes, each and every person who is reading this, thank you! When MacGyver came out I hadn't written anything in almost 10 years, but the chemistry of Mac & Jack & Riley & Bozer & Matty pulled me in, and I remembered how much I love to write: to craft my ideas into stories. I made new friends here in this fandom. I appreciate each and everyone of you who have taken the time to read one of my stories, and I super appreciate those who take the time to leave a kudos and/or review! So if you want to take a sec and tell me what MacGyver means to you. I'll go first.
To me MacGyver is a show that brought me back to writing again. It is also my 7 yo niece's favorite TV show and has been since she was 4! I've made new friends from all over, and it has prompted me to be braver and try new things! Today during work I had a student bring up her laptop and talk to me about MacGyver, and another one had to came talk to me about fanfiction! I hope this isn't the end of the road, but if it is it was a pleasure traveling it with y'all!
