Louis raked his hand through his still wet hair as he made his way to the servant's quarters.
It felt so good to get off all the dirt and grime from cleaning and training.
Mom would probably laugh if she could see me now. Working in the castle, being trained by an old maid and the princess. He shook his head, a small smile coming to his face at the thought of spirited, short tempered princess.
Over the short time he had been inside the castle, he had seen her loose her temper at her cousin more times than he could count. And for some unknown reason, it made him smile.
I get the feeling that she is not your typical-
"PRINCESS!"
Every muscle in his body tensed at the scream that pierced the night air.
"Aramina! Grab her hand!"
Wha... He slowly looked up and his blood ran cold.
Dangling five stories above the ground was Corinne, one hand clinging desperately to a brick that was jutting out of the wall.
Above on the balcony, Aramina and Viveca were reaching for her.
"Grab my hand!" Viveca yelled, leaning as far over the railing as she dared. "We'll pull you up!"
Corrine sucked in a deep breath and, summoning all of her strength, pulled herself up, reaching for the outstretched hand.
"I got you!" Viveca let out a small laugh. "Aramina, get her other hand!"
Corinne stared at the red head's hand for a long moment. If she released her hold on the wall, Viveca would be the only thing holding her up...
"It's okay," Aramina said quietly. "We've got you."
"She doesn't trust them."
Louis jumped at that voice that sounded beside him and spun to see Renee, her eyes glued to the scene above.
"And I don't blame her." She looked over at boy with a crooked smile. "I wouldn't trust anyone in this situation."
Corinne grit her teeth. "Are you ready?"
"I'm ready!" Aramina leaned stretched out as far as she could. "Now!"
As she released her hold, Viveca pulled her, just far enough for her to grab onto the red head's hand.
"I've got you!" Aramina laughed. "See?! I got you!"
Corinne let out a mirthless chuckle. "Can we celebrate after I'm on solid ground please?"
A small breath of relief escaped the boy as they pulled the princess up towards safety.
"Come on," Renee said as she moved towards the castle. "Let's go see what happened."
Louis moved to follow but his attention was jerked back upwards as a chorus of loud gasps filled the air.
He watched in horror as Corinne's foot slipped against the side of the balcony. Her hands slipped free from Aramina and Viveca's grasps, and in the space of a heartbeat, she was plummeting back towards the ground.
Aramina lunged over the edge, making a wild grab for the princess's hand as Viveca grabbed a hold of her feet to keep her from falling. Her hands wrapped around Corinne's right wrist, stopping her swift descent.
But as the blond was suddenly jolted to a stop, a loud cry slipped past her lips. "My shoulder!"
Aramina's stared down at her. "Can you pull yourself up?"
A shake of her head was all she could manage.
Viveca pulled back on the red head, in attempt to bring them up, but another sharp cry made her stop.
"Aramina!" Louis called as he ran forward. "Drop her!"
"What!?"
He cringed at the yell that sounded from all four girls.
"It's okay!" He responded. "I promise! Just... let her go!"
Corinne shook her head quickly. "Don't..." She whispered. "No... please..."
"Corinne!"
She looked down at the boy, nearly sixty feet below. She wasn't sure how... but she could see his eyes. Brown. Calm. Sincere.
"Corinne," He said, his voice much softer. "Trust me. I'm not going to let you get hurt."
She sucked in a long, stuttering breath.
The pain in her shoulder was making everything spin and a deep blackness threatened the edges of her vision.
"Do it," She said quietly.
"What?" Aramina's eyes widened in alarm. "Princess, if he doesn't-"
"Just do it." She sent the red head a tight smile. "You can let me go."
Aramina gave a small nod. "Okay."
"What!?" Viveca shrieked. "Are you crazy!?"
"Three..."
"Aramina."
"Two..."
"Don't even think-"
"One!"
Corinne squeezed her eyes shot as Aramina's hold on her wrist disappeared.
It felt like an eternity. Like she was falling through an endless amount of space.
The moment she hit Louis's arms, he stumbled backwards, but managed to stay upright thanks to Renee reaching out to steady him.
Breathless moments of silence dragged out as he stood there, the princess, safely, in his arms.
Ever so slowly, her eyes peeked open. "You... You..." A tremendous, shuttering breath escaped her as she pressed her face into his neck. "You actually caught me."
He slowly sank down to sit on the grass as the reality of what had transpired the past few moments suddenly crashed in around him. "Are you okay?" He asked as he tried desperately to catch his breath. "What happened?"
"I'm going to see if I can find a musketeer," Renee said as she turned and hurried away.
"You caught me," Corinne breathed.
A small laugh escaped the boy as he wrapped his arms around her, only to jerk back when she let out a pained gasp.
"What's wrong!?" He asked desperately. "Are you hurt?"
She shook her head and finally looked up at him.
"I'm okay," She said quietly. "Just... dislocated my shoulder when I fell the second time."
Ever so gently, he took her face in his hands, his eyes scanning every inch of her face. "We need to get you to a doctor."
She shook her head, a small smile pulling at the corners of her lips. "No. I just..." Another shaking breath slipped past her lips as she leaned forward, burying her face back into the crook of his neck. "Can we just stay here. For a moment longer... please?"
"O-of course."
What do I do!? Louis' brain screamed, his arms held awkwardly to the sides.
He felt a tremble ripple through the princess's body and she pressed herself harder into his chest. But the moment that he felt something wet fall on his neck, all the uncertainty and awkwardness disappeared.
Being careful of her hurt shoulder, he wrapped his arms around her, hugging her to himself as tightly as he dared.
He didn't know how long he sat in the grass, holding the shaking, crying princess, and he didn't didn't care. He knew he would sit there the entire night if he had to.
A few minutes later, the tears subsided as did the trembles, but she didn't move away from him. She just relaxed more into his hold.
"Thank you."
He jolted at the sound of her voice. "What?"
"Thank you," She repeated quietly. "For everything."
He smiled, even though he knew she couldn't see it. "Anyone would have done the same, Princess."
"N-not just for that. But for this." She idly picked at a loose string on his shirt. "I know that this will sound crazy, considering I just fell sixty feet but... I haven't felt this safe in a long time."
A small frown fell over Louis' face. What?
"What do you mean?" He whispered.
When he didn't get a response, he looked up at Aramina and Viveca who had been standing nearby for quite awhile.
"I think she's asleep," Aramina whispered. "What did she say?"
He slowly shook his head as Renee and several musketeers appeared around the corner.
What did she mean she hasn't felt safe? Was that just hysteria talking or...
He looked up towards the balcony where she had been hanging from and his frown deepened.
How did she fall? Or... did she not fall? Is it possible she was pushed?
