The Assignment

Chapter 6

Ashley was glad that Sharon had gotten ahold of Mike. It gave Kaitlyn, Hannah and Joey something to look forward to. Kaitlyn was still pretty sick and Ashley had to take her back to the doctor for another antibiotic shot. She was given strict orders to rest; something Kaitlyn struggled with. Of the kids, she was most looking forward to reuniting with her father. They had been close before the Red Flu, but then again; Mike had been remarkably close to all of his kids. She was concerned about Joey bonding with him, but Joey was an unbelievably sweet little boy who was very capable of endearing himself to anyone who met him. Still, Kaitlyn was worried about it. Finally, Ashley asked about it.

"So, why are you so worried about your dad with Joey?" Ashley asked.

"Its something my mom said before she died." Kaitlyn answered. She was sitting on the couch with a cup of hot tea and a warm blanket.

"Can I ask what?" Ashley asked.

"I knew my mom and dad had trouble. They tried to keep their fights quiet and away from us kids, but I guess my mom had cheated on my dad. He knew it and they were trying to work through things. Mom felt terribly about it. She really loved my dad, and I guess she got lonely or something. She said Joey belonged to my dad, but was afraid he would doubt it. I never wanted specifics though, and I am worried Dad will wonder." Kaitlyn explained.

"Well; if he really wonders, he can have a DNA test done." Ashley said.

"He may never question it too. I don't want to bring it up if he doesn't. Joey resembles Mom closely, but I see little resemblances to Dad sometimes." Kaitlyn answered.

"His chin." Ashley said.

"The shape of his eyes and ears." Kaitlyn said as she watched her little brother in the next room.

"I wouldn't worry about it too much. He is going to do everything in his power to keep your family together." Ashley said.

"I hope so. Mom was certain that Joey was Dad's son. I just wish she was still here." Kaitlyn remarked.

"You and me both. I miss my mom and I know you miss yours." Ashley said.

"She would know how to deal with all of this." Kaitlyn agreed. She was staring off into space, and Ashley knew she was remembering her own mother.

"And your dad will too. Just be patient. Sharon said he would be back inside of two weeks." Ashley said as she squeezed Kaitlyn's hand. She hoped she was correct.
