A/N
Me: Crawls out of the ditch I was hiding in. "...Hey guys."
Everybody: "Wait, you're not dead. Time to remedy that."
Me: "Wait! Please! I can explain why I haven't uploaded in… 1… 2… 4… 6 months! You see it went like this: Writing is a hobby for me. And thus it means I write for fun. However, I have a (read: many) solid character flaw(s). My laziness. Now, the first 5 chapters basically came within 24-hours back to back of each other. This was because I finally got off my lazy ass and decided to do something productive. All the ideas I had packed up in my brain poured out onto the pages, but this caused me to burn out pretty quickly. The break was supposed to only be a week to recover. Then it became two. Then three. Then a month. Then three. Then six. Then I got more inspiration and I'm gonna barf it all onto a few pages before hermiting another 6 months."
Everybody: "Wtf that's a shitty excu-"
Me: "ALRIGHT ONTO THE CHAPTER."
To fit the theme better I'm replacing some of the characters with RWBY characters. ALSO: I KNOW THAT THE FIGHTING IN THE MOVIE IS COMPLETELY DRAMATIZED AND IMPRACTICAL. I study Wing Chun myself, so I can safely say it's mostly BS. But hey, that doesn't mean the fighting scenes aren't cool. If you want to beat up my opinion in the comments feel free to do so.
Also, yes, Chinese racism does indeed exist. Although this example may be exaggerated and dramatised for the sake of views, it does exist. Look up the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Chinese Massacre of 1871 (Considered one of the worst lynching in American history). Might be a bit graphic, but eh, nobody teaches this crap in school.
Disclaimer: I do not own RWBY nor Ip Man 2. If I did, I'd be a lot richer.
In what felt like no time at all (6 months for you guys) O. Ruby reappeared in a shower of rose petals.
"I am back! Again! And this time I got something special~" O. Ruby sang.
Oobleck raised an eyebrow. "More special than watching multiple universes of different religions, cultures, social normalities, histories, and issues?"
O. Ruby nodded enthusiastically. "Yup! Because this isn't a different universe. It's a parallel universe!"
Clover blinked. "A... parallel universe?"
O. Ruby nodded. "Mhm. Remember how I said there can be different versions of what happens in a universe based on the events which take place? Well, in this one, it's Remnant without Grimm nor Faunus."
Ozpin's eyes widened marginally. "No Grimm?"
Blake raised a curious eyebrow. "No Faunus?"
"Doesn't that just mean the world is free from most major issues? No racism, and no giant death monsters." Juane commented.
O. Weiss let out a hum. "Not quite. Humanity discriminates against Faunus because they are different. So what happens when that difference is removed? Well, they discriminate against the next noticeable thing. Skin color, religion, hair color, facial structure, you name it. Think of it like this: there are 5 apples. One is green, the rest are red. The most notable difference is the green one, but if you take that one out, you will notice differences between the other apples too. This one has a leaf, this one has a bruise, this one is shaped weird, ect. As for Grimm… well lets just say, theoretically, what would happen if all Grimm in the world disappear?"
Ironwood scratched his chin. "Well… expansion of land, thus more people, therefore more people to focus on technological developments. Frontline villages would stop disappearing, trade would flourish, food would become more readily available since hunting and farming would be safer."
O. Ruby nodded. "Yes, those are immediate changes. I'm talking about the far future. When all the land is claimed. Humanity pushed against Grimm to expand, because Grimm prevented them. What happens when it isn't Grimm blocking the path? After all, what if it was people? And that's how some wars start, over something blocking something else from achieving or gaining something."
O. Ruby held up a cartridge. "This universe suffers greatly from racism. Skin colors and ethnicity decide social status in countries. Dark skinned, light skinned, yellow skinned, brown skinned. Japanese, Chinese, Irish, Polish, Native American. These mean nothing to you, but mean everything to them. I hope to give you some insight on these topics before we proceed further, and this has some action in it, so it shouldn't be too boring."
O. Ruby snapped her fingers, and the cartridge disappeared. The film came to life, and caught everybodies' attention.
The shot starts with someone hitting a drum with chinese characters.
Oobleck squinted. "That looks… like it's from Mistral."
O. Weiss nodded. "Some things will bear resemblance to Mistral, as the place in which this takes place used to belong to a country in East Asia, which vaguely resembles Mistral. In fact, Asia is basically the Mistral equivalent of this world."
Glynda raised an eyebrow. "Used to?"
O. Ruby nodded. "During the expansion of a Nation called Britain, they claimed many places. The country this area, Hong Kong, used to belong to was China."
The shot pans up to show six figures in black garbs move into position in a boxing ring. Lights flash as people begin taking pictures of the performers.
Ruby tilted her head. "Who are they?"
O. Ruby just shook her head. "They are martial artists, the art of which mainly derives from Asia."
They begin their forms, the one at the front shouting to signal a change. The performers continue to practice with the drumming in the background when the shot changes.
Qrow walks towards the audience, looking more of Mistal descent.
"That's… me? I'm from Mistral here?" Qrow said, surprised.
Qrow walks up to Ren, who looks older.
"...And that's me, I presume." Ren indifferently stated.
Yang whistled. "Not bad lookin', Ren."
Nora hissed.
Qrow put his fist into his palm as a standard sign of respect and greeting.
"Master Lie." Qrow greeted in Cantonese, and subtitles popped up for English translations.
Weiss raised an eyebrow. "Master? Also, let me guess, the subtitles were your doing." Weiss eyed O. Ruby.
O. Ruby let out a chuckle. "Yup. Also, Ren and Qrow are both Masters at their art in this universe. It's simply respectful to refer to each other as masters of the art they dedicated themselves to."
Lie Ren stood up and returned the gesture.
"Master Qrow. Thank you for the tickets." Ren replied thankfully.
Qrow gave a small nod of acknowledgement. "All the schools are doing demonstrations. Ask your pupils to demonstrate their kung fu so more people will know about Wing Chun." He advised.
"Wing Chun is the martial art style that Ren practices in this universe." Weiss explained before anybody could ask.
Winter let out a thoughtful noise. "So this is a festival to promote their own styles. Not different from the Vytal festival, but not completely similar either."
Ren smiled a bit at the offer and nodded as well. "Sure." He said gratefully. "I won't keep you."
Qrow smiled and gave him a pat on the shoulder before he turned around and went back to his seat. The shot cuts back to the performers on stage, getting more movements into their forms. They gave a push with an open palm, before rotating it back into their center in a wide circle.
Their shouts die into the background as the shot cuts once more. Jacques is seen sitting in a chair next to his chairman, when Taiyang walks up behind him.
Weiss groans. "Of course. This is about racism, how could I forget my father."
Tai seems more interested in himself. "So I'm not from Mistral like Qrow. I guess we've basically swapped."
He is wearing a shower robe, his chest of full display.
"Please save your macho-ism for in private, not in public." Glynda sniped.
Yang snickered.
Tai taps Jacques' shoulder from behind to get his attention.
"Alright, fellas?" Tai asks with a slight accent. Tai shakes the chairman's hand while Jacques talks.
"Hello there, Taylor! All well?" Jacques shakes his hand and pats his shoulder. A staff member appears and brings Tai a chair. "We've prepared a little show for you."
(A/N: I kept "Taylor instead of changing it to "Taiyang" since "Taiyang" seems to be a distinctly asian name.)
"Why thank you." Tai scooches the chair closer before sitting down, leaning forward to get a better view. The camera then shows the performers then practicing their kicks, before moving onto their low blocks and stances. Port back alongside another master gesture to their students.
"Ah yes, of course I am a fellow wise, old master. Perfectly fitting!" Port exclaimed.
Oobleck rolled his eyes.
"Go get ready." They both said. The students moved towards the stage. The other master gestured to some others next to him. "You go too, both of you." They both made sounds of acknowledgement before moving off towards the stage as well.
Ren looks to the student next to him. "Go up and demonstrate "Shaking Hands. Together." All the students in the row stood up and filed out.
"Shaking hands?" Ren questioned.
"Probably some kind of move." Pyrrha mused
A fatter Junior is seen sitting next to Qrow. "It all works out. Suffer some losses to publicize martial arts."
'He's fat.' Was Yang's first thought.
"Losses?" Ozpin questioned.
O. Ruby just hummed.
Meanwhile, Tai seems amused. "What's all this, a pantomime? Why are they dancing and screaming?" Tai mocked.
"Oh, don't tell me I'm a racist. Against Mistral no less." Tai groaned.
Jacques shook his head. "It's not pantomime, Taylor. This is Chinese boxing." The performers give an open palm jab to their side before beginning it back to their center.
"They believe the screaming gives them strength." He finished sarcastically, smiling. Tai just gave an amused laugh.
'Racist regardless of the universe, it seems.' Blake noted.
The performers hold up a block, before shuffling to the side and doing a rear high block.
Tai's smile turns malicious. "Oh yeah? Well let's go give 'em something to scream about ya think?"
The chairman next to him nods with a smile as well. "Go for it." Jacques starts laughing when Tai stands up. Jacques has a smug smile before the camera cuts again. Tai is seen walking up to the stage.
Winter narrowed her eyes. "What's the brute up to?"
Tai made an indignant noise.
"Chinese boxing?" Tai mocked under his breath. Four staff members open the ring for him, and he steps in. He looks over the performers as they continue without stop.
The speaker quickly walks up, and speaks in English first. "Ladies and gentlemen, it seems like Twister wants to get into the action!" He then continued in Chinese. "Western Boxing versus Chinese Kung Fu!" He starts clapping, and the crowd joins in.
The performers finish, and they begin to thank the audience. Qrow is seen to slowly stop clapping, his face getting more serious.
"He knows something is up." Qrow notes.
Tai walks up to one of the performers and opens his robe. "Hey guys!" He called. He put his hands on his hips. "Punch me." The performer seemed to hesitate, looking questioningly at him.
Tai stuck his fist up. "Punch." Tai points at his chest. "Me." The performer gives a little pause, before delivering a quick punch at stops centimeters from his chest.
Glynda nods approvingly. "A great show of control and distance. Knowing how to hit with precision may help you in something akin to a hostage situation."
The crowd begins to clap, but Tai doesn't seem satisfied. He grabs the arm and pulls it towards his chest in a punching motion.
"Hit. Me." He says, scowling. Jacques can be seen trying to hide his smile as he rubs his chin.
Blake's eyes narrow. "This is all a joke to him, isn't it?"
The performer seems annoyed for a second before complying. Tai flexes his chest, and doesn't even wince at the blow. Tai's scowl deepens and grabs his arm. "More power! C'mon!"
The British audience begins to laugh. "Go on! Teach 'em a lesson!" One said. Qrow looked to be growing more anxious.
Tai continues to provoke the performers. "C'mon! C'mon!" The performer finally gives in with a hook to the head, but Tai blocks it and delivers a devastating jab to the face.
"Oh shit, this just got real." Yang muttered.
Tai didn't bother correcting her language.
"C'mon!" Qrow seems to want to get up but Junior stops him. The downed performer is dragged off stage, and Tai engages 5 more combatants. He kicks the first, blocks a strike from the second before punching the wind out of them, counter-punches a third, grabs the kick of a fourth before punching him, and gives a right hook to the fifth.
Tai raises his hands into the air and gives a war cry. "Yeah!" The British audience laugh and clap.
"Remember, if all you use with your power is abuse those weaker than you, then that isn't a show of strength. That's a show of your personality." Ozpin said solemnly.
The students all think of Cardin.
Qrow and Junior give each other a concerned look. "Now that! Is power!" The Chinese audience seem less than pleased.
"Bloody Foreign Devil!" They help the injured performers off the stage. Qrow looks back to see Jacquis clapping, before pointing at Qrow and wagging his finger back and forth in a "No" gesture.
"What kind of leverage does he hold?" Ironwood mused. After all, in their world, Jacques could leverage his dust and money to get what he wanted. Ironwood wondered what kind of pull he had here.
Junior holds onto Qrow's shoulder to stop him from doing something rash.
"Yeah!" Tai continues to scream. Ren gives a concerned look, while his students glare at him. Tai spread his arms wide. "So this is Chinese boxing? Ha! You should stick to dancing!" He starts giving a mock dance to add insult to injury.
The speaker translates. "The Champion said Chinese Kung-fu was useless. Go back to dancing."
Nora rolled her eyes. "Wow, you beat up a bunch of people weaker than you. Congrats. It's not like you've fought Renny, he'd kick your ass."
Glynda slapped her riding crop into her palm. "Language."
Nora gulped.
The masters all stood up and pointed at Tai. "What did you say?!"
Tai ignores it and continues to dance while laughing. "What's this?" He mocks while giving a poor attempt at some Kung Fu moves. The students start an uproar, trying to push their way to him. A bunch of staff block the way while the students try to break through. Ren stands up with narrowed eyes. A bunch of the audience begins to swarm into the ring, while Tai just relaxes in the corner with a sneer. The staff begin to push them off the ring, martial artist or not.
'Reminds me of how they used to disperse our peaceful protests.' Blake thought.
Ren begins to get increasingly concerned.
The staff begin to get more violent to quell the crowds, tossing masses off the side and beginning to attack the crowd. One of Ren's students sneak around and try to attack Tai while he fights someone else. "C'mon! Fight!" Tai screams, before turning around just in time to block the attack. The student manages to take two hits before he gets downed to one more at the eye. Ren and Qrow finally act, running up to the stage.
"Now you're in for it." Tai muttered.
Ren runs up the steps while Qrow vaults over, trying to quell the crowd. "Stop fighting! Stop fighting!" Tai is continuing to attack the crowd, civilians included.
"Tai, I don't mean you any disrespect, but this you is a complete douche." Qrow said.
Tai didn't disagree.
Once Ren sees that his student is carried off to safety, he also begins to try and quell the combat. "Stop fighting! Stop it!"
The British audience stands up confused, some taking off their hats. Junior turns to Jacques. "What should we do?"
Jacques just leans back and smiles. "Relax Fatso! Enjoy the show!" His chairman laughs at the name, while Junior turns back concerned.
'Ironically, I'm rooting for Junior to be resistant.' Yang thought.
Ren catches somebody who was just knocked back by Tai. He sets him down before turning to Tai.
"Stop fighting! Stop it!" Tai either ignores it or doesn't understand and throws a punch at Ren. However, unlike before, Ren precisely parries and blocks all of his punches.
"Ah yes, finally found someone who can take a punch and can't knock 'em down." Port noted.
Qrow appears, giving two quick kicks to his leg and stomach which knocks him all the way back to the ring boundaries. Tai's coach grabs him before he can rush back in. Ren and Qrow take the opportunity to stop the fighting and move the injured away.
"C'mon!" Tai provokes, trying to keep the fighting going. Qrow and Ren ignore him in favor of settling the anarchy.
"Never take bait. It's easier said than done, when your emotions are rampant, but remember that if the enemy is provoking you then they WANT you to attack them. Don't do what they want." Glynda lectured.
Ozpin coughed. "I think they get the point."
"Look at me! Stay focused!" The coach reasons. Ren and Qrow managed to get the Chinese back to one side and the staff to the other, but they continue to shout and point at each other. Ren runs down to his student once the crowd stops being violent.
"Leung…" Ren says, patting his cheek.
Leung smiles. "Master."
Ren looks at the other students. "Carry him down first." They pick him up together. "Slowly… slowly…" Ren says, helping him over the side. Once they settle him down, Ren looks back towards the ring.
"Let us through!" Port exclaims, pushing through the crowd to get to the front with a scowl. Qrow stares down Tai.
"Jeez, I think that's the first time I've seen Port angry. It's actually kinda scary." Jaune muttered, but Port heard him anyway.
"Ohho! Don't worry, you'll probably never have to see me get serious. Because if I do, you most likely will be too busy fighting to pay attention." Port laughed.
"Master of Ceremony! Come here!" Qrow beckons.
The speaker comes into the ring, walking up to Qrow. "We were demonstrating Chinese martial arts. If you didn't like it, you could have left. But you should apologize for insulting us!" Qrow laments.
"Reasonable, but unfortunately, racists aren't reasonable." Blake said sadly.
Once more, everybody thought of Cardin.
The speaker turns to Tai. "He wants you to apologize." They summarized.
Tai scowls. "What? Apologize?" Tai walks up to Qrow. "What is this some stupid Chinese tradition? The winners have to apologize to the losers? Well if I had to do that then I would be apologizing every day!"
"I mean, this isn't really about winning. It's more of his actions. But I guess he would need more than a few brain cells to understand that." Jaune spoke, venom in his voice.
His team looked surprised.
"Wow, I've also never seen Jaune angry before. Jeez, I guess there is a first time for everything." Nora exclaimed.
Tai grabs two of the staff who reluctantly move forward with him. He leans forward right into Qrow's face. "You want an apology from me, old man? Then you beat me in a fight, right now, and I'll apologize."
"Personal space, don't want to smell your disgusting breath." Qrow groaned.
Tai breathed out into his hand, then sniffed it. He shrugged, finding nothing wrong.
The speaker looks at Qrow. "He said, if Master Qrow can beat him, then he'll apologize."
"Let me fight him!" Port exclaims, shoving towards the front. "I'll beat him till he apologizes to me!" Qrow grabs him while he shouts, pushing him back.
The master next to him agrees. "Slay that foreign devil!" He exclaims.
"Masters, let me handle this." Qrow placates. "Please get down for the moment."
"This Qrow is much better with reason than ours. Can we trade?" Winter asks.
Qrow glared. "I bet you're a racist too, considering you're from Atlas."
Those from Atlas winced.
Tai kicked his leg. "Low blow." He whispered reprimanding.
Qrow scoffed. "Please. A low blow would be saying she's a Schnee so she's racist."
Port debates this for a second before agreeing. "OK! Let's go!" Port exclaimed, leading the crowd back to the seats. Ren stays behind to give Qrow a concerned look before finally heading back with the rest. Qrow turns back to face Tai. A referee appears, standing between the two. Junior, the masters, and the students all have anxious looks.
The bell rings and the ref exclaims "Fight!". Tai puts up his fists, robe gone and boxing gloves on. Qrow keeps his hands to his side, circling Tai. Tai goes for the first blow, but it's quickly blocked and Tai gets knocked back by a kick to the stomach. Qrow jumps and delivers a knee, but Tai manages to block most of the force. Tai moves for three punches, but they are expertly blocked by Qrow. Qrow attempts a counter, but Tai quickly moves back with a jab to stop an advance.
'It's weird seeing them fighting so angrily at each other. They're such good friends.' Ruby thought.
Ren looks on with anticipation as the fight continues. Qrow ducks under a punch and blocks the follow up, taking advantage of the opening to give devastating blows to his side. Tai tucks his arms in, and blocks most of the damage, so Qrow moves to his upper chest. Blocking an incoming punch, Qrow delivers two strong elbows to the face before rotating and faking another attack to his side. Qrow instead goes for an attack for the chest and head, which are both blocked. Tai tries his hand at a counter, but his hook is ducked under and Qrow delivers a double punch. Swinging his arm back, Tai tries to hit the back of his head, but Qrow ducks away just in time.
"Tai seems stronger, but Qrow's faster and more skillful with his moves. As long as he keeps that up, Qrow will win. However, battle conditions change rapidly, and thus it's not impossible something may happen." Winter analyzed.
Mentally, she wanted Qrow to win for once. But she was going to die before saying that out loud.
Resetting his stance, they both circle each other while the crowd begins to clap at the display. Cameras flash, and the masters give encouraging words from the side.
They circle each other some more before Qrow jumps in with a shout, delivering a drop kick. Tai tries to land a punch while Qrow is landing, but Qrow ducks under it just in time. Tai continues his assault, Qrow leaning back and barely dodges the hook while blocking the follow up. Qrow counters, but Tai leans his head to the other side. Qrow attempts a second time, but Tai seems to have gotten a rhythm and leans back towards the right.
"So despite only having few brain cells, the Tai of this world isn't a completely muscle based fighter. He can adapt and learn as well." Glynda noted begrudgingly.
Qrow unsuccessfully tries to do a blow to his low stomach, but it's blocked and he is forced to retreat as Tai throws a punch. Using his momentum, Qrow does a sharp turn and tries to strike with the back of his elbows, but the triple assault was blocked. Qrow dodges, blocks, ducks, and weaves through the counter punches. However, he leans too far on the last blow and Tai manages to step forward and deliver a heavy hook to his face. Qrow gasps, but recovers quickly and gets back into a stance.
"Being able to recover and stop enemies from pressing the advantage is very important, remember that not everything is going to sit back and wait for you to stand up." Glynda lectured.
Ozpin just sighed, not even bothering to try and stop her from teaching.
The referee steps in quickly to separate them when the bell rings. "Stop! Go back! Break! Break! Break." They both give each other one last glare before retreating to their corners.
Tai sits down and his coach takes his mouthpiece while staff offer him water. The coach pats his shoulder. "You're doing fine."
Qrow sits down, and people start massaging his shoulders as he rests. Ren approaches Qrow, concerned. "Master Qrow!... Master Qrow!" Qrow turns his attention to Ren. "Are you all right?" Ren asks.
Qrow spaces out for a second before shaking his head. "I'm fine." Qrow waves it off.
"Something tells me he's lying." Blake noted.
O. Ruby nodded. "Despite it not affecting too much now, Qrow is sick in this universe. His lungs aren't what they used to be, and he gets tired very easily."
"Against a giant hunk of muscle like Tai, that won't end well." Ironwood mused.
Ren looks like he wants to say something, but decides otherwise. He instead offers advice.
"In the next round, Master Qrow, instead of trading punches, test his ribcage." Qrow glances at Tai. Tai glares back.
Qrow shakes his head. "It's not that easy." Qrow turns to Ren and nods. Ren nods back. The bell rings.
"So what's the relationship between those two? Friends? Colleagues? Student/pupil?" Ren wonders.
O. Ruby stays silent.
Qrow stands up, and Tai shoves his mouthpiece back in. The ref signals the start, and Qrow starts off instantly with a spinning jump slice. Tai blocks it, and follows up with a punch that is quickly blocked. Tai continues his assault, which Qrow steadfastly holds his ground. Punch after punch was blocked, and regardless of what angle, Qrow blocked or parried them all. When Tai overextends too much, Qrow takes Ren's advice and ducks down to deliver a double blow to his stomach. Tai rolls with it, and recovers to block Qrow's upper assault.
"Even if it doesn't show, he probably felt that. Just because it doesn't look like they're hurt, doesn't mean they aren't." Glynda noted.
Tai lashes out with a punch, and Qrow delivers a side kick which both dodges Tai's blow and knocks him back.
"Kick the foreign devil down!" Port muttered when Ren returned to his seat. Qrow attempts a blow, but is quickly countered by follow up attacks from Tai which refuse to let up. Qrow's guard breaks, but Qrow performs a spinning blow to stop Tai's assault just in time.
"Impressive, being able to flow with losing ground and use it in a blow." Clover muttered.
Qrow presses the offense, but can't seem to land a blow against Tai's defense. Qrow starts throwing attacks towards Tai's face, and he raises a defense which Qrow claws at.
"You could say he clawed at that thing… like a bird." Yang snickered.
Ruby just groaned. "Dammit Yang!"
Tai drops his arms and Qrow attempts to claw at his face, but that was just a distraction as Qrow then delivers a knee to his stomach. Tai lashes out with a messy punch, which is punished with a counter to the face. Qrow attempts a high-low, but Tai reacts with his own and manages to get a clean hit on Qrow's face. Qrow starts falling towards the left and, With his guard wide open, Tai follows up with a second hook that catches Qrow and launches him to the right.
Qrow falls to the ground, and the ref steps in to block Tai. Ren and some of the others stand up in concern. Junior is on the edge of his seat while Jacques is laughing his ass off.
'That motherfucker.' Qrow growls in his head. Everybody else is having similar thoughts.
The ref shoves Tai away and turns towards Qrow.
"One! Two!" Ren looks on in concern. "Three!" Port and the other masters have a serious look on their face. "Four!" Qrow starts blinking, consciousness returning. "Five!" Qrow starts pushing himself up. "Six! Seven!" Qrow manages to push himself onto his knees, and Junior looks worried. "Eight! Nine!" Qrow stands up just in time, and the crowd cheers him on. "You okay?" The ref asks Qrow. "Look at me. Are you okay?" Qrow gave a dizzy nod, not quite steady on his feet yet.
"He probably has a concussion, putting him on the back foot." Pyrrha noted.
Ren agreed. "Unless he can even the odds, his center of balance and movements will probably be off. Double that with the fact that he's sick..."
The fight begins again, Tai and Qrow circling each other once more. Tai has a nose bleed, while Qrow has a nasty black eye. Tai moves in with a flurry of punches, which are blocked and dodged with expertise. Qrow shoves him back, and Tai bounces back with a hook, but Qrow grapples him and delivers a knee. Tai gets a grip on his neck, and starts pummeling his back with the other hand. Qrow struggles to get the grip off, and starts pushing him to the edge of the ring.
The ref steps in and breaks them up, and when he backs off. Tai tries to jump in with a surprise attack instantly, but Qrow grabs his waist mid-air and uses his momentum to throw him to the floor. Qrow rests on the side of the ring while Tai struggles to stand.
"That throw likely dazed him, but won't do much damage. In terms of how much they are hurt, Tai landing those two hooks to Qrow's head will likely put him in the lead." Pyrrha said sadly.
None of the other students questioned her, as she had the most experience in tournament style combat.
The ref starts the countdown. "One! Two! Three! Four!" Tai starts getting back up, and manages to stand up again. Ren looks on worried, noticing Qrow's tiredness. The ref grabs Tai's arms to get his attention. "Are you alright?" Tai nods his head, and the ref starts the fight again.
"Shit! Master is out of breath." One of the students muttered.
"And there it is, the thing that bites me in the ass in the middle of the fight." Qrow growled.
Ozpin hummed. "You can't save anyone if you're dead, make sure you're in top shape before heading out to the danger. It's okay to rest."
Team RWY looked at Blake. Blake looked away.
Qrow hesitantly leaves the edge of the ring and rejoins the fight, his stance noticeably more sluggish. They circle one another, and Tai gets offensive first. Qrow blocks the first three punches, before blocking the fourth hook and being shoved away. Tai throws a jab right at his eye, sending him reeling back. Qrow uses his momentum to spin and jump off the floor, trying to land a fall kick but it's blocked by Tai. However, even with how strong he is, the force of Qrow's whole weight sends Tai stumbling back a few feet.
"It's not looking so great. They're trading punches, but Tai's stronger and has more stamina, so he'd ultimately win." Jaune muttered, worried.
Qrow spits blood out of his mouth, and right as they are about to continue, the bell rings and the round ends.
Ren looks on anxiously as Qrow returns to his corner. "Master, sit down and rest a bit." One of the students insisted. They began to fan him, wiping his face, and rubbing his shoulders. Tai, in his corner, is receiving similar treatment.
"Good," Tai's coach complimented. "He's getting tired." Qrow wipes his face with the towel, and drops it to the side. Ren sees the blood on it, and looks up to Qrow with a pleading face.
"Stop fighting, Master Qrow!" Ren begged.
Qrow looked on, determined. "I can't let that foreign devil insult us."
"Don't get hurt for your ego!" Ren reasoned.
Qrow shook his head. "I can abide in order to survive, but I won't let him insult Chinese martial arts!" The bell tolls once more for the final round, and both opponents stand up.
Ironwood sighed. "While I would like to say don't let pride get you hurt, he's also fighting against racism. I can understand wanting to fight for a better world."
They circle each other at the start, like every other round. Qrow is visibly more injured than Tai, sporting cuts and bruises across his entire face. Despite this, Qrow keeps up with Tai's initial flurry of punches. However, Qrow's sickness catches up to him as he starts having trouble breathing.
"If Qrow wasn't sick, he'd be winning." Ruby said, annoyed.
Weiss sighed. "Unfortunately, enemies won't care if you're sick or not. Life isn't quite fair."
Qrow's movements become sloppier, but he still keeps up. Bending backwards on a right hook and bending forward on a left hook, Qrow rebounds and strikes at Tai's back and side. Tai tanks the blows, and gives a solid right hook which breaks his guard. Following up, Tai gives an unrelenting flurry of punches.
Qrow gets knocked down, and his student's shout in worry. "One! Two!" The ref begins counting as Qrow tries to get up again. "Three!" Ren grabs a towel and tries to throw it in, but Qrow stops him.
"Just give up! An apology isn't worth getting hurt this much." Jaune growled.
Blake didn't say anything, but it reminded her of those who refused to run away when being violently dispersed in her protesting days, continuing to march forward.
"Four! Five!" Ren looks at him with surprise, but Qrow just shakes his head. "Six! Seven! Eight!" Ren can only stare as Qrow gets back up again. "Nine!" Qrow's students cry his name, trying to get his attention, but Qrow ignores them and heads back into the fight.
"Are you okay?" The ref asks.
"He obviously isn't!" Nora exclaimed.
Pyrrha shook her head. "It's the fighters choice to keep going, the ref won't be responsible for anything that happens."
Qrow nods, and the fight begins for the final time. Tai, seeing Qrow getting tired, goes for multiple heavy blows. Qrow starts growing weary blocking the strong attacks, until one finally manages to catch his cheek. Qrow does his best at a counter, but it's sloppy and easily dodged. Qrow blocks one more attack before latching onto Tai's neck and digging his nails in. Ironically, it's Qrow who loses breath due to his sickness and his grip weakens.
"Damn, he had them too. Guess I have bad luck regardless of what universe I'm in." Qrow muttered the last part to himself.
Tai takes advantage of this and lands a blow on Qrow. Qrow is stunned, and Tai follows up with more consecutive attacks, unrelenting. Qrow rebounds off the edge of the ring, but Tai knocks him back like a tennis ball. Qrow steadies himself once more, only to keep meeting the end of Tai's fist.
"At this rate he might die! Just surrender!" Ruby exclaimed.
Tai keeps attacking, with Qrow visibly bleeding out of his mouth. Qrow refuses to go down, and grabs the edge of the ring. Jacques and his chairman are visibly elated, clapping and laughing.
"That motherfucker." Qrow said, aloud this time. Nobody bothered to reprimand his language.
"And yet he's still less brutal that the Jacques of your world. You just never see it." O. Weiss comments sadly.
Everybody is silent with shock, Ren staring helplessly.
Qrow still holds onto the ring as Tai lands blow after blow, treating him as a punching bag.
"Oh dear…" Glynda muttered.
Qrow still holds onto the ring as Tai breaks his nose. Qrow still holds onto the ring as he gets a concussion. Qrow still holds onto the ring as his skull is fractured. Qrow still holds onto the ring as his students yell at him to let go.
The students all looked visibly disturbed, Yang covering Ruby's eyes.
Qrow still holds onto the ring as blood flies from his mouth. Qrow still holds onto the ring as he starts fading into unconsciousness. Qrow let go of the ring when he died.
And Jacques looks absolutely ecstatic.
"I might consider murder when we get back." Qrow growled.
"And I'd probably help." Ironwood agreed.
Cameras flash as Qrow's limb body tumbles to the floor. The entire Chinese audience stands up in shock. The masters looked horrified. The entire audience is completely silent. The ref bent down and checked his eyes for a reaction, of which there was none. The ref checked for eye dilation, of which there was none. The ref checked for a pulse, of which there was none. The ref stood up and gave a "No" sign. Junior looked about to break down.
The entire audience was silent, everybody at a loss of words.
As if a dam broke, all the students and masters rushed onto stage. Tai gloated in his victory, laughing and flexing as people rushed towards Qrow. Ren could only stand in shock, his legs rooted in place, as he stared on. Tai spit his mouthpiece onto Qrow's body and smiled at the camera.
"This disregard for human life is disgusting." Winter growled. "For what? Different skin color?"
"And why do hundreds of faunus die behind a statistic?" O. Ruby countered. "It just never seemed real because you never saw it with your own eyes. Why are they murdered? Because they can see in the dark? Because they look different? Your worlds aren't truly different."
"Go home, boys." Tai taunted. Ren stared on, his face showing a rare glimpse of anger hidden beneath his neutral facade.
"He's in shock." Glynda said simply.
The screen turned to black. It cuts back to show Ren walking down the isle of grievers at a funeral. His students are there, along with his family dressed in white robes. His wife is sobbing uncontrollably, while the younger children don't seem to fully understand what's happening. A picture of Qrow is alongside incense, food offerings, and flowers.
"He has a family…" Ruby muttered.
Ruby cried into Yang's arms.
Meanwhile, Tai looked away. It reminded him too much of Summer, and how she died before she could watch her children grow up.
Ren finally reaches the end, and gives a low bow of respect. And then another. And then one final time, as per custom. Ren bows to the family as a sign of respect, before lighting his own incense and placing down the towel which would have saved him among the other items there.
Ren looks right at the picture. "Master Qrow… You're my most respected master." Ren sat down with the other grievers, a solemn atmosphere permeating throughout.
"Ren's mad." Nora says. The others looked at her skeptically, and she shrugged. "It's hard to tell, but I can see it. He's going to do something violent."
Suddenly, a newspaper pops up.
"HUNG KUEN GRANDMASTER DIES IN WESTERN BOXING MATCH" "MASTER QROW DIED FOR HIS COUNTRY" "WESTERN BOXING CHAMPION WAS A BULLY" Were among them. One is in the hands of the police chief, who is staring down Jacques in uniform.
"Jacques, have you seen what the local newspapers are saying about us? I ask you to organize one, ONE, boxing competition and look at the trouble you've got us in!" The chief lamented.
"So he's a cop, and that's how he gets away with this fucking shit." Qrow snapped.
This uncomfortably reminded Ironwood of how Jacques could also get away with almost anything because he, too, had a hand in the military, economical, and political scene.
Jacques stares on impassively. "I'm sorry, sir. I know what to do. I'll take care of it."
"You'll take care of it? You'd better take care of this! I do not want to be in the newspaper once more for bullying the Chinese!" The chief raged.
"It's alright, sir. I promise, we will have no further trouble from them." Jacques stated monotony, staring at the wall.
"Something about how he says that rubs me the wrong way." Jaune muttered.
Junior and some of his men can be seen walking up stairs and into a press room. "Sit tight!" One of them shouted. Junior opened the door to the main press room, which was empty. Junior turned to the writers still in the room. "Who's the editor-in-chief?" He asked.
A person resembling a male Lisa Lavender with glasses walks in. They look up and notice him. "What's the matter?" The writer asks.
"Is that… a male Lisa?" Ruby guessed.
"Of course. The only time they publish the papers in favor of the repressed, it's when themselves are part of the repressed group." Blake growled.
Junior motions for the others. "Take him in."
"Wait, wouldn't Junior want to keep them since they further the pro-Chinese sentiment?" Jaune wondered.
Ironwood sighed. "He has to follow orders, whether he likes them or not. As long as he keeps his position in the police, he can eventually do more good."
Jacques walks down a hall with subordinates following him, and bangs his batons on one of the doors. Inside is the editor in chief. Jacques straps the baton to his wrist.
"You better remember, that this is what happens to people who mess with me." Jacques jams the baton into his stomach, and the writer gasps and falls back. Raising his baton, Jacques strikes down onto his back. Again. And again. And again. The writer collapsed on top of the stone bench, groaning.
"For fucks sake." Tai growled.
Ruby whimpered, and Yang held her closer.
Jacques waves over one of the subordinates. "Pull his hands!" The officer pins the writer down, a knee pressed onto his back. They hold the hand down onto the stone bed, and the writer clenches it in fear. Junior walks in and observes silently from the background.
"Jacques doesn't want him to be able to write…" Pyrrha realized.
"No…" The writer begs. "N-Ahhhaahaa!" The writer screams as Jacques beats the baton onto the hand.
"Pull him tight!" Jacques demands. He raises the baton again and delivers another blow, with a sickening "crunch".
Ruby looked sick, and Blake had to look away as it reminded her of things she's witnessed before to faunus.
It was then that Junior decided to act.
"Sir… Sir… Sir… Sir... " Junior said, hastily making his way into the cell. Jacques turns to him. "It's not wise to beat him like that. He will write a scathing report on us." Junior hesitates. "We need to get rid of him. I know what to do. Let me handle it." Junior negotiated.
Jacques sneered. "Fatso! You take care of him!" Junior let out a barely audible "ok" as Jacques and his men left.
Ironwood's eyes narrowed. "That man is going to do something. The only reason he would do this is because Jacques won't be able to do anything should he find out that the writer wasn't actually killed. And given what we know, I'm doubtful he'll actually murder the writer."
The writer was left writhing, clutching their hand and whimpering. It's bent in ways it's not supposed to, black and blue everywhere. Junior looks at the writer for a second, before tossing the baton onto the floor. The writer flinches at the noise, and Junior leaves.
"He might get a minor case of PTSD." Ozpin notes grimly.
The scene changes to show many reporters in front of a desk. It had four people, Jacques, the chairman, Tai, and Tai's coach. Jacques starts speaking.
"There have been a lot of rumors in Hong Kong recently. This is due to a boxing competition that had been arranged. Unfortunately, a Chinese boxer rather overestimated himself and challenged our champion."
"Oh, this is the part where he buries the entire incident under the carpet with some under the table money, lies, and petty apologies." Blake hissed.
Jacques motions towards Tai, who looked positively bored. "Twister reluctantly accepted the challenge, and although he held back during the fight, unfortunately the Chinese boxer was so weak that he couldn't stand up to Twister's fist, and after a few punches, he tragically died. We are sorry for this regrettable accident."
"I would say I can't believe anybody would buy these lies, but when people already have negative views about a group, thinking they did something dumb isn't unbelievable." Winter sighed.
The chairman next to Jacques continued. "In order to give Twister justice, I have decided to organize a Chinese Western boxing competition. Twister will fight the Chinese people in a fair manner on the stage."
Tai, fed up with beating around the bush, started talking in a loud voice. "In order to protect my name and reputation, I've agreed to fight any Chinese person." The coach reached under the table and brought out a pot. "Now from what I hear," Tai continued. "The chinese like to use these," Tai pulled out a comically large incense. He started snickering at the word "these", while Jacques hid a laugh behind his hand and his coach tilted his head down to hide a smirk.
"They murdered somebody, and then they fucking laugh like it's some kind of joke. They only care about their own reputation." Qrow spat.
"And I would like to stick to that tradition. So I've agreed to fight any challenger for as long as this thing burns."
The shot cuts to Ren walking up the stairs, Tai's muffled voice echoing in the hallways. "And this is a pretty big glow stick so it's going to give plenty of opportunity for any challenger to come forward!"
"I think we can all see where this is going." Nora said. "So was I right or was I right?"
Nobody gave her the satisfaction of an answer.
Ren continues to climb with a sullen look. "But be warned! I will not hold back!"
"Unfortunately, you should not have said that, for when he inevitably loses, he will not have an excuse." Ren said matter-of-a-factly.
The students, sans Nora, were surprised by Ren's passive aggressiveness.
"By the time this thing burns to the end, there will have been no more chinese boxers because I will have killed them all!" Ren walks down the hall, his step not faltering in the slightest before it cuts back to Tai.
"I would say that he put the last nail on the coffin, but he has practically made the whole thing at this point." Clover huffed with his arms crossed.
"In fact I don't think we're even going to need to USE this thing because I doubt that there is any Chinese fella, that has the guts to get in the ring with ME!" The journalist there started murmuring, before a voice cut through it all.
"See, that's where you're wrong." Ren corrected.
"We don't burn incense just to keep time." Everybody turned around to see Ren. They all made a path for him as he walked forward. "What's really important about the Chinese tradition of incense burning is that it represents the modesty which is inherent to the Chinese culture." The coach is leaning in, translating everything in real time. "Mr. Miller. I'm challenging you to a fight!"
Tai stood up and looked him in the eye. "You're making a big mistake."
"No you." Nora countered.
Yang snickered.
The shot cuts to dark as the journalists go wild, asking questions about who he was. The scene cuts to show bags packed on top of a bed. It pans to the left to show them eating dinner in the next room. Ren is sitting next to his son and across from his pregnant wife, Nora.
Nora gasps. "We're together together! Look!" Nora exclaims, pointing at the screen as if he hadn't noticed.
Ren smiles. "Yes, I'm looking."
"Zhun, hurry up. Don't let the landlady wait too long." Nora says to the child.
'Why are they going over to the landlady?' Jaune mused.
Ren looks up from his meal. "I'll take you there in a moment." Nora gives a small nod.
The family walks out the door, Ren carrying the briefcases. Crossing the street, Zhun asks a question.
"Mom, why are we staying with the landlady?" He asks.
"That's what I was wondering." Jaune noted.
Nora looks down to him. "Dad's practice will affect your new brother." Zhun lets out an "oh" and they continue down the street. The Landlady approaches them as they near the building.
"Here, let me." She says, gesturing to the briefcases Ren is holding.
"I'm so sorry for the hassle, landlady." Ren apologizes with a small smile.
She lets out a small laugh. "Don't worry. Come."
"Thank you. Let Zhun carry the small one. Zhun." Ren beckons towards his son.
The landlady grabs his attention. "Mr. Ip, you must defeat the foreign devil."
"Ah, she's rooting for him. Probably why she's doing him this favor." Tai realized.
Ren gives a quick nod. "I'll carry it up first." The landlady says, carrying the bags up. Ren smiles at Nora, before the shot cuts once more.
Ren is sitting near the woodman dummy, deep in thought. Sounds of fist hitting wood can be heard in the background. Ren looks at the dummy, thinking about what his wife said.
"Interesting, I haven't seen a practice dummy quite like that before." Oobleck noted. "I wonder how it's used."
"Don't worry and practice well. But don't practice too late. You have to win." Zhun looks up to Ren, with tears in his eyes. Ren rubs his head comfortingly. "We have to go." Nora says, leading Zhun away to the building. Ren gives one more look to their retracting backs before turning around.
Ren stands up from his bench, done reminiscing about the past. He takes off his jacket, and pushes one of the pieces of the woodman dummy into place.
"I haven't seen Ren that determined in a while." Nora muttered.
"I live by myself." The landlady says to Nora. "Make yourself at home. You can sleep here." She says as she fixes the couch with pillows.
Ren continues to practice, rotating between strikes and blocks quickly. Strike, strike, block, parry, strike. Nora puts Zhun to sleep, and Ren continues to practice. Turn, strike, turn, block, turn strike.
"That seems to be quite an odd style, though maybe it's because self-defense hand to hand combat isn't as predominant as offensive-style close quarters combat, since most CQB breakthroughs are made by huntsmen against Grimm." Ironwood mused.
Ren was paying extra attention to the movements. If he could implement it into his own fighting style, he might be able to improve his close quarters combat.
Meanwhile, back in the press room, the head writer is still working.
"Don't be scared. Keep writing." He says. His right hand is tightly bandaged. When they don't do anything, he gets annoyed. "Keep writing! I'll still publish it tomorrow!" He shouts.
"He's dedicated if he's still writing about police racism after getting beat like that." Winter complimented.
Suddenly, the sounds of footsteps can be heard in the hall and Junior appears with his men.
"What are you writing?" Junior asks, walking in. His men look around leafing through papers. "Still writing? You're not afraid to die?" Junior picks up the paper from one of the writers and reads it. "'Undaunted by Western Boxer, Wing Chun Expert Enters Chinese-Western Boxing Competition!'" The head writer looks away. "Is that all?"
The writer looks back surprised. Junior continues. "Why not 'Western Dog Will be Demolished?" Junior throws the paper back, and picks up another from a different writer. "'Defend news with blood, expose truth with conscience.' You have conscience, but do you have truth? I do!" Junior says, gesturing to himself. Throwing the paper back, he puts his hand on his hip. "You got the guts? I'll give you the truth. We'll ruin him!"
"So I was right, he's making his move now so when Jacques finds out about his betrayal, it'll be too late." Ironwood smirked.
The writer nods frantically. "Good, now-" Junior puts his arm on his shoulder and starts leading him to a more private area. "This foreign devil detests and despises the Chinese. I'll give you the goods, you report them. I guarantee he'll be done for."
The shot cuts back to Ren, sitting there with a man on the street who is eating some meat.
"Who's that?" Yang wonders.
"He's one of Ren's old friends, a martial artist, who got shot in the head by a soldier occupying the town they lived in, so he forgot who Ren was." O. Ruby answered.
Yang winced. "Oh… shit, that's terrible."
The landlady is seen making food for Nora and Zhun. Ren continues to practice, the sound of fist hitting wood continuing to echo. Nora grows more and more uncomfortable, grabbing her stomach and panting.
"Please don't tell me…" Tai's eyes widened.
The landlady runs up to her. "What's the matter? Mrs. Ren what's the matter? Oh, you're in labor! Zhun, call your dad right away!" Nora grabs Zhun before he can run off.
"Wait, Zhun! Don't distract him." Nora says, gasping.
"That's stupidly sweet. Sweet because it's considerate, but stupid because she's in fucking labor." Qrow drawled.
The landlady seems exasperated, but complies. "I'll ask the midwife to come, then. Zhun, watch over your mom."
Ren continues to relentlessly practice into the morning. The shot cuts to show a large fancy arena, with a boxing ring in the center. People file in and take their seats. Martial arts students tune into the radio, and a chinese speaker can be heard commentating. He is sitting there real time, reporting it from a commentator stand.
"The Chinese-Western Boxing Match is about to commence!" He comments. "The hall is packed with locals and expats." The radio can be seen playing out on the busy street, the amnesiac man there as well.
"Oh, he'll be listening in as well. Maybe he'll remember Ren…" Ruby hoped.
"It's bustling with excitement." The shot cuts to Zhun, Nora holding the newborn baby, and the landlady listening intensely to the radio. "There are both Chinese and Western umpires." The shot cuts to the press room, where they all are gathered listening in. "I believe the match will be fair, just, and open."
"I don't know if he's saying that just for the sake of saying it, or if he truly believes it." Winter wonders.
The martial arts students from the fish market alongside some others are gathered, all listening on one radio.
"Hey, isn't that the guy who sat next to Ren at the funeral?" Jaune noted.
Everybody blinked.
"Nice catch." O. Ruby complimented. Jaune blushed. "Yeah, he used to be a thief that Ren beat the crap out of, but then got a wife and turned over a new leaf. He studies martial arts, and all those around him do too. They used to work and study under Qrow."
The shot cuts back to the commentator. "Ladies and gentlemen, do not leave your radio!"
"Lie Ren, knock him down in 3 punches." One of the masters advised.
Port disagreed. "No, knock the foreign devil down in 2 punches!" His words were like his normal boasting, but his tone was dead serious with a hint of anger.
"Port looks like he wants to go in and murder Tai himself. A murderous Port is scary." Yang shudders.
Ren can be seen standing in one of the corners, waiting for his opponent. Reporters crowd behind him, cameras flashing.
"Master Lie, your opponent is a boxing champion. Are you convinced your Wing Chun will prevail?" "Master Lie, all Hong Kong citizens are behind you." "Master Ip, are you fighting for yourself or in defense of Chinese martial arts?" Ren made no action to show he acknowledged any of them, his face staring into nothingness.
"He's in deep focus, not even noticing those around him." Ren noted. He often found himself doing the same sometimes.
"Well, that's when you do your best." Jaune encouraged.
The speaker appeared, speaking first in Chinese. "Ladies and gentlemen… The long-awaited Chinese-Western boxing match is about to begin!" He then turns around to the British audience and repeats it in English. "Ladies and gentlemen… and now, for the long-awaited Chinese-Western boxing tournament, please give a roaring welcome to the undisputed, champion of the world, the Twister."
"So Tai is a world champion? Interesting, can't wait to see him dethroned." Qrow snarled.
"Can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree for once." Winter said.
Qrow snorted "That just means this is one of the few times you're correct."
"As if you dru-" Winter was cut off by Ironwood.
"I know your libido may be repressed in the military, but save your flirting for later." Ironwood said with a deadpan.
Winter sputtered indignantly and Qrow leaned back with a smirk.
The British audience begins clapping, and the speaker turns back to the Chinese audience. "Let's welcome the boxing champion, Twister!" He says in Chinese.
There was fanfare as a spotlight shined onto Tai, walking in holding a British flag over his head.
"Talk about over the top. Oh well, the bigger they are, the harder they'll fall." Weiss retorted.
Ren stared on, his face giving nothing away, but the feeling of anger permeated. While Tai may have walked in with applause from the British audience, the Chinese audience jeered and booed. Tai's personal staff walked behind him, holding his medals and flaunting them to the audience. Walking into his corner, Ren and Tai had a staredown. Tai breaks first, turning away to his corner and cracking his neck.
The staff take off his robe and Ren approaches early. The ref stops him, and forces him to return back. The British audience starts laughing at him, and Tai smirks along with them.
"Ren really wants to cave in his face." Yang snorted.
However, the sentiment was different over with the Chinese audience.
"Lie Ren is eager to knock him down, very good." Port noted. Ren returned, not even looking the slightest bit embarrassed.
His students look concerned. "Maste-" Ren cuts him off by holding out his hand.
Tai's smirk turns into a sneer as Ren shows no sign of backing down. The ref gestures both of them to the center of the arena.
"Well if the last match was anything to go off of, the ref and speaker seem impartial enough to not let their bias affect the match." Blake said.
"Gentlemen, I want a clean fight." The ref says.
"I want a clean fight." The speaker translates.
"When I say 'fight', fight. When I say 'break', break. You have to follow all my instructions at all times, is that clear?" Ren nods, but Tai sticks his fist out threateningly.
"I can finish you off with two punches." Ren doesn't react, staring down Tai impassively.
"No you." Nora said again.
Ren smiled at her confidence in him, even if it was in another version.
The ref forces them both back to the corners, and Tai gloats to his coach.
"This'll be a piece of cake, mate." Tai brags.
"Just go out and get 'em, slugger." The coach says.
A woman walks down the ring, holding up a sign that reads "Round 1". Tai shoves in his mouth piece and they approach the center once more. The bell rings and the ref starts the fight, Ren immediately going into a fighting stance. Tai keeps trying to shuffle to Ren's side, but Ren is locked onto his center point.
"Master Lie, punch him like you punched me!" Port exclaimed. The man next to him rolled his eyes.
"It's too easy to punch you."
"What did you say?" Port yelled over him.
Everybody laughed while Port had the decency to look embarrassed. Classic Port.
Tai sends out a few test jabs, seeing Ren's reaction.
"They keep testing each other." The commentator said into the mic.
Tai sends a hook which is easily backstepped, and a jab which is parried.
"Ren is more defensive, I guess since his style is more geared towards self-defense and not necessarily starting combat." Ozpin noted.
Glynda leaned over. "It may be fruitful to have students learn basics, to help deal with Salem's pawns." She whispers.
Ozpin hummed in thought.
Blake's ears twitched.
Tai eyes him over. Ren's stance is solid, so Tai tries to provoke him into attacking. Tai runs in, and Ren kicks him, but Tai tanks it and barrels into him. Ren is knocked back and rebounds off the ring, ducking under his follow up hook and intercepting his uppercut.
"Jeez, Ren's fast." Yang noted. Honestly, she had to learn more tricks than strength, so she started trying to pick out techniques in the fight.
Expertly blocking 4 follow up jabs and ducking under a hook, Ren is knocked back blocking Tai's haymaker. Tai presses his advantage, sending hook after hook, landing one left hook and then hitting him with an uppercut on his downward fall.
Ren rebounds off the ring, charging into Tai with an elbow. Tai shoves him away and lands another hook. Ren grabs the next follow up in an iron grip, but Tai instead throws him spiraling. Ren rolls with the fall, instantly getting back up. He quickly blocks then parries, but Tai is forcing an assault while Ren is in a corner.
"Ren is quickly getting overwhelmed. Tai's stronger, and while Ren's defensive techniques and speed are faster, Tai's relentless assault is pushing him back. It isn't looking great." Pyrrha admitted.
Glynda agreed with that sentiment, but she also knew fights could turn on a dime. After all, Qrow's fight with Tai started really well. But she didn't share this, they needed to gain experience dissecting information themselves.
Ren jabs at his head, but it's dodged and Tai lashes out with an uppercut.
Doing a low block, Ren successfully intercepted it and hooked his arm around the back of Tai's neck. Pushing in, Ren shoves his Elbow into his neck to choke him. Tai tries to shove him away, but Ren keeps pushing forward. Trying to sweep his legs to lose balance, Ren quickly regains ground before finally managing to hook his foot into Tai's inner knee. However, Tai squeezes harder and Ren is forced to push all his energy towards Tai to not get crushed.
"Normally, Tai's strength would win, but Ren is in a better position, grip, leverage, and technique wise." Pyrrah noted.
"So he evens out strength with skill." Juane mused.
Tai realizes the futility, and instead throws Ren again to the other side of the arena.
Ren recovers quickly, but not quick enough as Tai lands a devastating hook. Falling down, the Chinese audience stands up in worry.
Ren made a mental note to work on his strength.
The British audience is laughing and clapping, with Jacques at the front of it all.
"I'm getting tired of that asshole's voice." Yang growled.
"Yeah? Try living with him." Weiss retorted.
The ref forces Tai away, and Ren's students cry out to him in worry.
"Master Lie was knocked down! The umpire's counting!" The commentator exclaimed. Nora looked worriedly at the radio. "One!"
"Get up! Master Lie!" "Get up!" "Master Lie!" Ren finally opens his eyes. "Two!"
The members of the press were all muttering and anxious. "Three!" "Looks like this punch was too strong. Can Master Lie stand up?" "Four!"
Ren starts to push himself up. The martial artists in the fish market looked on in fear. Tai gloats as the Umpire continues to count. "Five!" Ren gets to his knees. "Six!" The Chinese audience begins to clap as Ren gets up. "Seven! Eight!" Ren looks at the smirking faces of Tai's staff.
"They're so sure of Tai's victory, it'll be so sweet to see their faces when he loses." Yang said, confidently.
"I cannot say I disagree." Ren stated.
"Nine!" Ren finally manages to get to his feet.
"Master Lie is ok! He's up!" The martial artists in the fish market all cheered, and Nora looked relieved.
The Chinese audience claps, and Ren stares down Tai. The ref starts the fight again, and Ren changes from his parrying stance to his offensive stance. Ren's eye twitches for a second, before his impassive facade is back. Tai tries to land a hook, which was backstepped. Tai attempts a second time, and this time Ren ducks. Taking this opportunity, he lands 5 quick consecutive blows onto his chest.
"Jees, his fists are fast! I guess speed makes up for strength, quantity vs quality and all that." Qrow notes.
Tai forces Ren back with an uppercut. Ren tries to kick in Tai's knee, but Tai backs off for a quick second before running back in with an attack.
Quickly parrying two hooks, Ren begins his counter attack. The next hook was parried further away, and Ren did a quick chop to his neck. Tai tried another hook, but Ren ducked under and landed more blows to his chest. Ren forced Tai back a bit with three quick low kicks, getting some distance between them. Tai tries his hand at a few jabs, but Ren is quicker and parries them.
"Ren's getting more used to Tai's wild and strong attacks."
Tai resorts back to a sloppy hook which is ducked under, and Ren lands 6 punches before rolling away from Tai's uppercut.
"It's like watching guerilla warfare in a fight. Sure, one's bigger and stronger, but the other is smaller and more agile. They hit, retreat, and hit again." Ironwood notes.
Glynda nods along. "And with how fast Ren is, he can definitely make those attacks count."
However, Ren grabbed Tai's leg on the roll and pulled Tai onto his knees. Using his flexibility, Ren tucked in and kicked Tai's head in the other direction. Already being off balance, Tai was easily knocked onto his back.
"Wow, that's like a move straight out of the movies!" Yang exclaimed. Everybody deadpanned and Yang realized what she said.
"Wait! I swear I didn't mean that as a pun!"
Ozpin nodded. "It is fairly impressive, Miss Xiao-Long. Mayhaps you could try something similar when we return back to the academy?"
Yang knew he was baiting her to improve, but the thought of pulling something like that during the Vytal tournament was enough that she'll do it anyways.
The Chinese audience cheered and clapped as the commentator began talking.
"Master Lie has knocked Twister down!" The people at the fish market began cheering and the press seemed ecstatic.
The British audience began cheering Twister. "One!" "Get up Twister!" "Two!" "C'mon!" "Three" "Get up lad!" "Four!"
Ren is standing there, ready in his stance. "Five!" Twister blinks back into consciousness, getting to his knees. "Six! Seven!" Twister finally gets to his feet, and the ref grabs his attention. The crowd goes wild.
"If only he stayed down, he wouldn't need to get his everything broken. But hey, at least this is more fun." Nora said joyfully.
Jaune scooched a bit further away.
"You okay?" The ref asks. Tai did a quick nod and the fight resumed. They stare each other down for a bit, before Tai attacks first. Going for a hook, which was blocked, then an uppercut, which was dodged. Not one to be dissuaded, Tai goes in for a hook. Ren backsteps the hook and blocks the follow up jab. Quickly backing off when Tai continues his assault, Ren parries the blow to the side before landing a chop to the neck. Tai tanks it, and takes the opportunity to land a hook.
"So he's going for a brute force method. Not actually a bad idea, considering he's probably much stronger." Ozpin notes.
The time keeper grabs the bell just as the time is about to run out, but Tai quickly follows up with a hook and Ren gets knocked down. The Umpire doesn't even start to count before Ren quickly gets up.
"And now the bell will ring, so ultimately Ren won that encounter since he is going into the next round knowing Tai's strategy." Ironwood comments.
The ref grabs Ren's shoulders and turns him around.
"Are you okay?" The ref asks. Ren nods, and the fight restarts. Only for the bell to immediately ring. The ref puts himself between the fighters, and forces them apart. They both receive similar treatment, with Tai's coach giving motivation while Ren's students cheer him on.
"The foreign devil has lots of stamina. He's endured many of Master's punches." Leung comments.
"Not untrue." Ren says. He'll really need to work on his strength in order to make his blows count.
A woman walks down the ring holding a "Round 2" sign. The bell rings again and the fighters reconvene at the center of the arena.
The ref starts the fight, and it begins with a staredown. Tai goes in first, like usual. Parrying the double jab, Ren quickly shifts his defense to whichever part is being attacked. Chopping his arm in a counter, Ren tries to land a strike to Tai's face which is blocked. Ren is forced away by Tai's wild hooks, ducking and weaving wildly to dodge. Blocking and uppercut, Ren feints a jab to his side only to do an open palm strike to his face.
"Anybody else notice how his movements aren't unsimilar to those he practiced on the woodman dummy?" Ren asks.
Oobleck hummed. "Now that you mention it, the woodman dummy did seem like it had three arms, two outwards and one in the center. Maybe that's what it's supposed to mimic, attacks from multiple angles."
Ironwood decided to look into the concept more at a later date, probably for training soldiers.
Tai gets on the defensive, raising his arms as Ren rains down countless fists onto his defense.
"Holy shit! That's fast, even for a huntsmen! I shudder to think how fast he'd be with aura…" Qrow muttered.
Tai opens it up to force Ren back with two hooks, both of which were subsequently blocked. Tai is forced to put up his defense once more when Ren continues to rain down fists.
"Now Ren is the one on the offence. If Tai opens his defence, he'll get hit. If he doesn't he'll slowly get chipped away at. If Tai attacks, he'll get countered. And if he backs off, Ren can use his kicks and longer ranges to attack." Winter analyzes.
Noticing his ironwall defense, Ren side steps and attacks his exposed sides and back. Tai focuses on defending his face as Ren continues to land countless blows onto his arms and sides.
"That's gotta hurt. I'm pretty sure if Tai had aura, it'd be broken by now anyways." Blake comments.
"Master Lie is attacking with a volley of punches!"
Yang snorts. "Understatement of the century."
Ren nods. "True, but what other words can you use to describe this?"
The commentator exclaims, and the amnesiac man begins practicing punches. The crowd begins cheering as Ren doesn't let up on his assault. Tai tries to force Ren away with a hook, but it only gives a quick second of reprieve before Ren continues to attack.
Getting tired of attacking his arms, Ren hooks an uppercut through Tai's defense and Tai can't do anything as his guard is opened. Seeing an opportunity, Ren lands a side kick onto Tai's exposed chest and knocks him further back. Tai grabs his chin and groans, before banging his chest and getting back into his stance.
"I'm pretty sure if he didn't have a mouthguard, his tongue would've been bitten off right there." Tai states.
"Which is also why they use mouth guards in the first place. To prevent that." Glynda retorts.
Parrying a jab and side stepping it, Ren grabs a hold of Tai's chin from behind and pulls him down while also kicking in the back of Tai's knees to force him further down.
Tai reaches behind him and grabs onto Ren's back, flipping him over his shoulder. Ren has to block Tai's assault while on his back, but quickly rolls back and catches Tai's leg in a grip with his feet. Forcing him off balance, Tai's sloppy punch misses and Ren pins Tai down. Mounting his back, Ren assaults the back of Tai's head. Tai stands up quickly, forcing Ren to roll away. As they both get up, the bell rings and Ren drops his guard.
"I don't want to jinx it, but things are going insanely well for Ren. I don't think Tai landed a single blow that entire round." Qrow comments.
Ren can't help but agree. "Once he switched to offense, there wasn't a single opportunity to counter attack. His blocks, kicks, parries, and punches made sure of that."
However, Tai doesn't and goes in for a hook, knocking Ren down.
Everything was silent for a second.
"Uncle Qrow, you jinxed it. Your semblance sucks." Yang finally said.
Qrow doesn't disagree.
Ren's students call his name while Port stands up, enraged. "Foreign devil! Still hitting after the bell?"
The rest of the Chinese audience jeer at Tai as well, pointing and shouting. The ref forces Tai back, and the students get into the ring.
"That's unfair! He hit after time was up!" Leung screamed, enraged. Tai spit to the Chinese crowd before returning to his corner.
"He has no respect, even in his own sport." Winter said, disgusted. "If you challenge someone to fight by your rules then don't respect those same rules, you might have as well fought him on the street."
Ozpin laughed. "Oh, but that would make things too easy. The fight would be over in seconds without those oversized gloves to help him block."
The students snickered.
Over at Ren, his students are worried for him.
"Master! Master!" Ren shakes his head, clearing the cobwebs from his head. Over at the judge's stand, there was a conversation happening.
"Let's talk about it, what's going on?" One asks the other. The one in question raised his finger in thought.
"Hey, isn't that the racist chairman?" Blake asked, narrowing her eyes.
"Mhm, let's see what BS he pulls to twist this in Tai's favor." Weiss snorts.
"Ok… give me one moment. Bran, please, could you come?"
Over at Ren's corner, he is now sporting a nasty black eye. The ref is called over and the judges talk to him.
"Please tell the Chinese guy, no more kicks like these." The ref nodded in affirmation before the judge left.
"Yeah, remember how the commentator thought it would be fair? As if." Tai seethes.
Meanwhile, Junior saunters in and glares at Jacques from his place in the audience.
"Junior's about to serve him some justice." Yang grinned.
Ruby turned to her. "You know him?"
Yang, realizing her mistake, quickly turns away and whistles.
A woman walks across the ring with a "Round 3" sign, and Tai growls at his staff and shrugs them off. They both approach the middle, and the ref gets their attention.
"According to a decision made by the judges, kicking is prohibited in this match." The speaker repeats this in Chinese. "If you don't agree, you'll forfeit the match, and Twister will be announced the winner. Is that clear?"
"I love the part where everybody just forgot how Tai hit after the bell." Jaune said sarcastically.
"Yeah, well, a common way to get people to turn away from incidents is to point out something else that needs 'fixing'." Blake says, familiar with the ways people turned others away from Faunus rights.
Ren looks at the ref for a second, as Chinese crowd is in an uproar. Ren turns his attention to Tai, who smirks and raises an eyebrow. Without hesitation, Ren nods. The bell is rung, and the final round begins.
Tai, filled with confidence, attacks first. Blocking a jab, Ren tries to move around Tai like he did before to strike at his sides. However, Tai's defense adapted and he's blocking his openings.
"Tai's protecting his whole body now, wary of Ren's relentless assault. Ren won't be able to pull another like that easily." Ozpin mused.
Forced back, Ren reflexively kicks Tai's chest.
"Watch this, even if Ren wins, people are going to say he 'Doesn't deserve to' because 'He cheated' ignoring the part where the rules were literally changed mid match to give Tai an advantage and how Tai himself cheated." Blake predicted spitefully.
"You're too pessimistic. Look at it this way, the radio will be too busy talking about how Police or Tai were incredibly racist, since they're public figures, and thus will receive more views." Weiss counters.
The ref runs in and blocks Ren. "Wait wait wait! One more kick, and you will be disqualified! Understand?" Ren nods, and can't even put up his stance before Tai uses Ren's blocked view to land a sucker punch. Ren is knocked back, and is quickly overwhelmed with his guard broken. Two jabs, a hook, and two haymakers knock down Ren quickly.
"Ah, it doesn't seem like Ren will recover from this. The 'good guys' don't always win." Ozpin sighed sadly.
"There is still a chance, but I wouldn't bet on it. Ren looked like he got knocked unconscious, so even if he got up, he'd be dazed and off balance." Glynda added.
The ref pushes as the commentator goes crazy. "Are you kidding? No kicking? Master Lie was felled by Twister's right punch!" The martial artists at the Fish market are all going crazy. Tai gloats and flexes to the audience, sure of his victory. Ren's students yell his name at his downed form. The press all have sombre looks. The people on the street are all crowded around the radio.
"Get up! Get up! Get up!" The amnesiac chanted.
"Wait, so does he remember or not?" Yang asked, confused.
Nobody answered her.
Ren remembers Qrow opening his eyes, getting back up. Ren's consciousness returns as he remembers Qrow's words.
"I can't let that foreign devil insult us. I can abide in order to survive, but I won't tolerate insults to Chinese martial arts!"
"Ren is filled with determination." Nora quotes.
Ruby, Yang, and Jaune get the joke. Everybody else just takes it at face value.
Ren's hearing returns to him just in time to hear the ref call "Three!". Getting on his arms, he pushes himself up. "Four!" The students cheer him on. "Five!" Shaking his head, Ren gets to his knees as the crowd starts clapping. "Six!" Ren finally got to his feet.
The ref got Ren's attention. "Are you okay?" The ref asks. Ren doesn't react for a second. "Are you okay?" The ref repeats himself. Ren collects himself, and nods.
'Let's see how he fairs…' Ironwood muses to himself.
Tai bangs his chest, his screams of "Let's do it!" muffled by his mouth piece. Easing into his stance, Ren is determined to see this through. Ren remembers Qrow getting back up, never surrendering. Ren then remembers his own advice to Qrow.
"Instead of trading punches with him, test his ribcage."
"It's not that easy." Was Qrow's reply.
Ren's eyes move to Tai's figure, focusing more than ever. Tai's punch seemed to come in at slow motion, Ren dodging it quickly.
"Is this what Renny sees when he goes into his deep focus?" Nora asks with excitement. "Well? Is it? Do you see everything in slo-mo?"
Ren let out a small chuckle. "Not quite."
Sidestepping to a new angle, Ren settled back into his form. Tai jabbed twice, and on the second, Ren countered. Parrying like usual, Ren quickly hit the inside of Tai's arm in slow motion. On the third jab, Ren struck an elbow into Tai's sternum.
Ren began to attack relentlessly. His attacks mimicking those he did on the woodman dummy. Chop, chop, block, jam.
"He's tiring out the arms, tearing away at the muscle in the bicep." Winter notes.
Ren looks at his own elbows. Maybe he could use them to increase power like the one on screen...
With every hook, Ren punished with a counter onto Tai's arm or neck. Tai landed a blow onto Ren's side, but Ren grabbed it and anchored it into place. With that entire side now open, Ren quickly did another chop to his neck. Tai's guard broke, and with a shout, Ren punched Tai's sternum.
Intercepting yet another hook, Ren elbowed Tai's skull and punched Tai's sternum. Tai backed off, his face filled with pain and anger. He rolled his shoulders with a wince, as that was where Ren directed his attacks.
"He'll be feeling that tomorrow." Ren notes.
"That's if he wakes up tomorrow and not next week." Nora said, ominously.
Ren and Tai circled each other some more, with Tai being more defensive.
Ren ran in with his flurry of punches, and Tai raised his arms like before. Except this time, with Tai's arms tired, his guard couldn't hold for any more than a second.
'He was in a bad position last time Ren did that, but now he's in an even worse position." Ozpin hums.
"Remember, sound strategy can beat power any day. Planning ahead with your attacks can benefit you in the long run." Glynda lectures.
Lashing out with useless hooks, Tai only got more attacks directed to his arm before Ren hooked his hand behind Tai's neck. Dragging him down, Ren delivered an uppercut which shot Tai's head back.
Tai tried to back off, but Ren grabbed his limb arms and pulled him back. Grabbing his head, Ren shoved his thumbs over Tai's eyes. Tai quickly shoved them away, but this was only a distraction. Remembering Qrow's failed attack, Ren mimicked Qrow's high-low punch.
"Avenged." Tai said simply.
Ren punched Tai's ear, rendering him temporarily half deaf.
"The ear actually helps keep balance because of a liquid in there. If it's distorted, along with his hearing, Tai will be at a severe disadvantage." Pyrrha studies.
Jaune looks surprised. "Really? Interesting, you're really smart Pyrrha!"
Pyrrha blushed. "Ah-ha… it's nothing, really. Knowing human biology is important as semblances may affect certain parts."
To add to Tai's disorientation, Ren threw his hands in random directions before going into an attack. Attacking his half-deaf side, Ren landed innumerable punches to that cheek.
"Get bitch slapped." Yang exclaims.
Finishing with a heavy blow, Tai's head snapped to the side. But Ren wasn't done yet. Grabbing Tai's head in a reverse grip, Ren flipped Tai onto his back. Tai's mouthpiece fell to the side somewhere. Trapping Tai's head between his knees, it was an easy target to pummel.
"Karma's a bitch, now break his legs Renny!" Nora exclaims.
Ren sighed. "Unfortunately, I can't go into that universe and thus won't have the honor too."
Tai tried to bring his arms up in a block, but Ren's assault was not going to let up and Tai's arms were already exhausted. Every punch, Ren remembered how Qrow was pummeled. Ren's face is shown with a rare anger, as he remembers Qrow being beaten to death. Remembering Qrow's face being strewn with blood, Ren doesn't let up.
"Do not do unto others what you do not wish to be done upon to you." Ozpin said sagely.
"Yeah, well, Tai broke the Golden rule and thus must pay the price." Qrow retorts.
Tai is helpless as Ren pummels his face in, blood dripping from his nose. His face is scrunched up in pain, and he tries to squirm away.
Finally, after Tai went limp, his face full of blood, Ren stopped. Slowly dropping him, the ref slowly approached and started counting.
"One!" Tai lay there, coughing with blood coating his entire face. "Two!" The audience was silent. "Three!" The Chinese audience started counting too. "Four!" The martial artists joined in, one running through Wing Chun forms. "Five!" The chinese audience cheered in sync. "Six!" The street is full of people chanting. "Seven!" The British crowd is yelling at Tai to get up.
"Sorry, but that isn't happening anytime soon." Weiss said sarcastically.
"Gee, I wonder why?" Yang adds.
"Nine!" Tai's eyes lolled from one side to the other, barely conscious. "Ten!"
The Chinese crowd goes wild, cheering and running into the ring. The press team hug each other in victory, and back with Ren's family, Zhun is clapping.
"Papa won! Papa won!" He exclaimed. Nora smiled down to her baby and laughed.
The martial artists at the fish market all went into full celebratory mode. The people in the street did victory dances. Tai's staff went to pick him up and make sure he didn't get trampled in the crowd of students running up to Ren. They all picked him up and started cheering.
"Where's those cocky smirks now, bitches?" Qrow gloats.
"Probably died, along with Tai's face." Glynda smirks.
The amnesiac on the street taps another on the shoulder.
"I know Lie Ren!" He said
"Wait, does he…" Ruby started.
"Who doesn't here?" The other retorted.
"Fok Yuen Kap, Wong Fei Hung, Lie Ren, and I! We're the Four Dragons of Foshan!" He clarified.
"He does…" Ruby said, tearing up.
Ozpin smiles. "And people say happy endings don't exist."
Jacques stood up from the crowd and started making a hasty retreat while everybody was distracted with Ren. However, he was intercepted by somebody.
"You ain't getting out of there without cuffs, bitch." Blake sneers.
Team RWY gaped at the normally calm and collected Blake.
"What? I got a long standing grudge, sue me." Blake replies.
"Stop." Junior says, holding a hand out. Behind him trailed the police captain and a bunch of officers.
The captain begins to speak. "Fatso has told me everything. Your actions embarrass the entire Hong Kong police force." He gestures to the officers behind him. "Arrest him."
Jacques can only look at Junior in shock as he gets dragged away by the officers. Junior turns to the ring and smiles. Ren makes his way to the edge of the ring, reporters swarming him while his students make a path. The speaker held the microphone to Ren, expecting him to make a speech to the British audience.
"I bet Renny wasn't expecting a speech. He usually freezes up when confronted with large crowds without a plan." Nora predicts.
Everybody goes silent as he begins talking.
"Hello!" Ren starts, thinking of what to say.
"He says, 'Hello.'" The speaker translated.
Ren opens his mouth, closes it, then opens it again.
"Yup, totally." Nora said.
"By fighting this match, I'm not trying to prove Chinese martial arts is better than Western boxing. What I really want to say is… though people may have different status in life, everybody's dignity is the same. I hope that from this moment on, we can start to respect each other."
Everybody was silent at the speech,
Until Nora broke it, of course.
"Okay, so he might freeze up, but I guess this Ren is better at philosophical improvisation." Nora admits.
Everybody was also surprised Nora knew what 'philosophical' was.
The speaker translates. "He says he didn't come here today to prove which was better, Chinese Kung Fu or Western boxing." The British crowd is silent and solemn. "Although people have different statuses in life, he doesn't believe that one person's integrity is worth more than another's. He hopes that we can start to respect each other." Tai looks through the blood in his eyes at Ren's back.
"Unfortunately, I don't think a single boxing match will remove all the racism. If only it was that easy…" Blake mutters.
The speaker holds the mic back to Ren, and he pauses for a second before talking. "That's all. Thank you."
The crowd begins to clap, alongside some of the British audience.
Yang turns to Blake with a smirk.
"You were saying?" Yang asks.
Blake huffs. "But I guess...I guess it's a start."
When Ren turns to leave, the reporters try to get some questions in.
"Master Lie! Master Lie!" Ren turns around. "What would you want to do most right now?"
Ren let out a small laugh. "I want to go home."
"Spoken like a true family man." Tai smiles.
The scene changes back to the streets, Ren running down stairs and down streets until he finally gets home. Nora stands there next to Zhun, holding their newborn baby.
Ren smiles as she hands the baby to him. "He takes after you." Ren said.
"Name him." Nora insisted.
"How about 'Ip Ching'? I want him to become a righteous man." Ren explained with a smile.
"Good!" Nora smiled.
Ren let out a short laugh. "He looks just like you!" Ren said again.
"He's running on an emotional high. I can relate." Tai sighs happily, reminiscing about the past.
They walk home, people on the street congratulating him. The scene cuts, to show Ren back home when somebody knocks on the door. Ren goes to answer it, and one of his friend's students walks in.
"Uncle Ren, I just made a new friend. He wants to learn kung fu, so I brought him." He looked back to the door and gestured him forward. "Come in."
A young kid no older than ten walked in. He put his hands on his hips.
"PFFFT!" Qrow spat out his alcohol and started choking. Tai was too busy laughing to help him.
"How much to learn martial arts from you?" He demanded.
Ren smiled and pulled up a chair. "Ah? What's your name?"
"Bruce Lee!" He exclaimed, pointing to himself.
Ren nodded. "Why do you want to learn martial arts?"
"I wanna beat up people I don't like!" He said, swiping his nose with a thumb.
"Spunky." Yang snickered, trying to hold in a laugh.
"They're going to grow up getting into fights, just like you, Yang." Tai smirked.
Yang sputtered, and Ruby was happy to finally not be on the receiving end of familial embarrassment.
Ren let out a chuckle. "How presumptuous." Ren nodded. "Come back when you've grown up."
Bruce stuck his chin in the air. "Hm?"
Ren shook his head with a smile, and the screen faded to black. Text appeared at the bottom.
"In 1956, 16 year-old Bruce Lee became Lie Ren's pupil." A picture of a much older Ren appeared practicing with Bruce.
"Oh, so he does return. Dedicated, atleast." Glynda says, surprised.
"Bruce Lee was deeply inspired by Master Lie and based his martial arts on Wing Chun theories."
O. Ruby stood up. "Annnnnnnnd that's a wrap. So what did you guys think?"
"Racism exists in every universe because humanity picks at physical features, and it's just as unfairly brutal as everywhere else." Blake said, cynically.
"Ren's badass if he learns how to punch fast!" Nora exclaimed. Of course that's what she got out of this.
Yang, however, was in deeper thought. After seeing the One Punch Man showing and now this, she realizes she needs to learn more refined techniques over power. Maybe she could learn some from Ren..?
Ren was having an opposite train of thought. Despite having the speed and skill, even the one on screen had some trouble going against somebody made of pure muscle like on screen. He needed to get stronger. Maybe he could ask some workout tips from Yang..?
O. Ruby just smiled. They needed to get stronger if they wanted to survive what comes later. She'll keep showing things that'll provoke the students to grow, and hey, if she can watch some movies in the process, then that's a win-win.
Also she liked Weiss' cuddles so that's a plus.
A/N: Yeah that last name-first name change thing that happened in Chinese? I don't quite understand how it applies when referring to Sifus in Cantonese, so I just used Lie Ren's first name even though I feel like it's already flipped since everybody calls him 'Ren' so IDK I got a headache just thinking about it.
Anyways I might do Ip Man 4 If my fingers still work after typing this. 15.3k words, it took me about 2 full days to finish.
