The nightmare was definitely one of the more disturbing ones to have haunted his sleep, and it had begun in the parking lot of CTU. For some reason, he and Nina were pointing guns at each other although neither seemed like they were about to shoot. Suddenly, he uncocked his gun, laid it on the floor, and then lifted his hands up in surrender. The look on her face suggested that she was baffled by this act, and he wondered if she thought it was some sort of trick. Soon enough, she had begun slowly walking towards then around him, before pushing her gun into the back of his neck and ordering him to go to his car. The last thing he remembered before it all went black were the voices of Jack and Kim telling her to drop the gun.
Alex sat up quickly, breathing heavily. He wondered what the dream meant or if it had no meaning other than to mix up some of his fears and anxieties. The events baffled him - why would he surrender to a terrorist like that, even if said terrorist happened to be Nina? Jack and Kim were soon at the scene, and he wondered if that was the meaning of the dream, that he wasn't surrendering, but rather making a choice to choose one side and he was choosing to side with his sister.
Hours passed by and it was early afternoon when the phone rang. A conversation later and he was heading to Conference Room 3, where he found three people - Jack, Tony, and Chappelle. Whatever this was, it wasn't going to be good.
"Sit down, Alex," Jack told him, gesturing towards a chair that faced the table at which the trio was sat. He had not wanted to do this, but he felt that it was necessary in order to protect the secret mission. Of course, he also hoped that it would help put an end to the growing relationship between his daughter and Alex, but that wasn't the priority. If Alex thought it was, then to Jack it was a bonus.
"Agent Myers, we've called you here today in order to investigate evidence of wrongdoing against you," Chappelle began.
Investigate wrongdoing? What have I done wrong.. surely he hasn't?
"Wrongdoing?" Alex replied simply, not wanting to commit to a single defence or show much emotion until he knew more about the allegations. Chappelle looked down at a document briefly, before he clarified.
"Firstly, deleting camera footage without good reason. Secondly, evidence of you physically attacking another CTU agent. Thirdly, evidence of you using drugs," he spoke, looking at Alex with disdain. Whilst Chappelle had been surprised that he had been accused of any of those three, he had the evidence in front of him and was determined to find out the truth.
What? Surely they can't be trying to use those against me? Why is Jack going so far with this?
"Why did you delete camera footage from a corridor in the basement?" Chappelle asked, eager to get on with proceedings. He had not seen the footage, nor had he been told about the contents, but he had a copy of the footage if he needed to. Meanwhile, Alex was stuck. He couldn't tell them about the kiss, even though two of the three people in front of him knew of it.
"I honestly don't have an answer for that," Alex replied, but Chappelle just looked unimpressed.
"And why did you attack Adam Kaufman?" Chappelle continued. Alex couldn't deny doing such a thing, but how could he show it was self-defence without proof or without incriminating Jack? Or, at least, trying to, he didn't think it would go anywhere if he attempted it.
"I did it, but I can't say why. I can tell you that it was in self-defence," Alex told him, but Chappelle didn't seem at all convinced. Alex glanced at Jack who seemed to be completely unaffected by the interrogation he was witnessing.
This really doesn't look good for me. I might as well stand up and walk out, but I would just be stopped and it would only get worse.
"Finally, Agent Myers, are you using drugs? Specifically heroin?" Chappelle asked, both his voice and his face showing disgust.
"No, I am not and I never have. I touched a syringe that contained heroin, but you can drug test me and you won't find any kind of hard drug in my system," Alex replied adamantly. Again, an urge to incriminate Jack rose, but he knew it would do nothing but make things worse for himself.
I'm surprised Jack included that one. All he has is two fingerprints, and any drug test I take would at most find alcohol. Maybe if that one collapses, the others will follow, but he might add more if he can. I have to be careful!
"That will be all for now. I will order a drug test for later today which you will attend," Chappelle informed him. Alex simply nodded before standing up and leaving the room, knowing that there was little he could do to change anything at that moment in time.
It's almost like they want to push me towards Nina! I don't think I could ever actually do that, but at least I wouldn't be under constant suspicion. Of course, she would probably want me to commit some act bad enough to convince her that I really had changed sides.
As soon as he had left the conference room, he noticed Kim stood nearby and, as soon as the conference room door closed, she embraced him for a moment.
"I heard about the investigation, Alex, do you think everything will be OK?" She asked as they walked down the corridor, but not towards the bullpen. Instead, they walked in silence into an empty room a few doors down from Conference Room 3. Inside, the conversation continued.
"I hope so, but it'll be difficult. The camera footage might become known to more people if they push ahead with this investigation. I can talk to Adam and find out why he's going along with the attack story, but at least the drug test Chappelle ordered will show I'm not a drug user," Alex replied.
Kim looked at him sadly. Whilst she understood her father's reasons for not accepting the relationship, she couldn't understand why he was taking this so far. Of course she, like Alex, had no idea that Jack's main reason for the investigation was known only to a very small number of people.
"We'll find a way out of this," Kim told him. She knew that there had to be something they could do.
Hours passed, and before he left for the day, Alex attended Medical for the drug test that he knew would end the drug use accusation. He was watching everything carefully, wanting it all to be done correctly. If it was going to show any drug in his system, it would be alcohol from the couple of beers he had drunk a few days before. Of course, he had some worries that the drug test would be tampered with and even wondered if Jack would go as far as to drug him without his knowledge.
This will probably remove the drug use from the investigation, but what can I do about the others? I could talk to Adam, but he would have to implicate Jack for the truth to come out about that. As for the camera footage, unless Kim were suddenly to be OK with it being known to Chappelle and maybe others, I can't do anything about it.
