Chapter 6: Friends and Enemies

"Who are you to demand my attention whenever you wish!?" The Military macaw tribe leader's voice roared as Bia, Carla, and Tiago, held tightly onto Blu. "I should have you banished from ever entering our borders again!"

"I would like to see you try…" Jewel dared as she got right up to the leader's face, standing as tall as she could to the tribe leader, although she was still shorter by a good margin.

Blu really thought the family would be in serious trouble and their journey would end right than and there and they would become prisoners… What he didn't expected was for the Military macaw tribe leader to suddenly start laughing heavily as both he and Jewel had smiles on their faces.

"Oh Jewel, still as tough as always." The Military macaw tribe leader laughed. "Did I get you this time?"

"Just a little Miguel." Jewel chuckled right back as Blu and the kids were rightfully confused as Jewel noticed her family's changed expressions. "It's okay Blu, kids, this is Miguel, he's good friends with my family."

"Always, Jewel here is like the daughter I never had." Miguel commented as Blu and the kids relaxed. "So how's old Eddie doing?" Miguel asked Jewel as Jewel remembered how she left things with her father last time she saw him.

"He's doing okay Miguel…" Jewel spoke in her most convincing voice. "Listen, I heard that some of your tribe spotted my mother with a few others, I need to know more." Jewel requested as Miguel sighed.

"I knew you would come sooner or later asking me this…" Miguel replied. "Come, lets go somewhere private and talk, meanwhile…" Miguel turning to the bird who confronted Jewel before. "Jose, please make Jewel's family feel comfortable while I speak with Jewel."

"Yes sir." The macaw obeyed as Miguel and Jewel split from the group, finding an empty tree in the tribe where they could talk to each other in private.

After making sure no one was around nearby to overhear the two, Miguel started as Jewel was patient, but very eager to know everything that Miguel knew.

"About a couple days ago, one of the patrols was flying around near the river to the west of us, while they were there, they spotted a group of different macaws flying together nearby next to the river…" Miguel started as Jewel clung to every word. "They were wearing face paint in a strange pattern and well as the patrol told me, one of the macaws looked a lot like you, but older." Miguel told Jewel as Jewel became excited, but also curious.

"Did they go and speak with this group?" Jewel asked.

"No, the patrol said that they didn't look very friendly and kept their distance and considering the face paint, I don't blame the patrol from not making contact." Miguel explained. "The patrol followed them for a little, they said they were flying north, always next to the river, but soon lost them. I don't know if my patrol was spotted or not, but they came back to the tribe as fast as possible and told me directly what they saw."

"Are you sure that's all?" Jewel a bit disappointed since it wasn't a big lead.

"Trust me Jewel, I wish I could tell you more, but I can't, I'm sorry." Miguel apologized.

"Well I guess it's better than nothing." Jewel trying to keep things positive as some information was better than nothing. "I just hope one of those birds is my mother, I just want her back home where she belongs."

"Sapphire's alive Jewel, believe it like I do." Miguel cheered up Jewel. "You know I see a lot of her in you and not just your looks, you have your mother's heart and toughness."

"Thanks Miguel, I really needed to hear that." Jewel shed a tear while she smiled.

"You're welcome, before you continue your journey however, you should stay here for a little and rest, you're going to need it." Miguel advised. "And good luck finding your mother." Miguel wished as the tribe leader and Jewel flew and found Blu and the kids being treated nicely as guests, with fresh fruits and water for them as the kids were having some fun with the Military macaw chicks.

"Hey Jewel, you found out where we're going next?" Blu asked.

"Maybe, Miguel couldn't tell me much, but it's a start." Jewel answered. "Lets catch our breaths and fill our stomachs, I'm actually a bit hungry." Jewel feeling her belly rumble as Blu chuckled and gave her a piece of fresh fruit.

Once the family was fully rested and ready to continue their journey, with Jewel and Miguel sharing one last hug and good wishes on their search, the Blue macaw family flew across the border of the Military macaw tribe. Resuming their flight they flew westward until they reached a part of the Amazon river which flowed gently along, looking around and not seeing any of the strange looking birds Miguel told Jewel about, the family didn't stop.

Following Jewel, the family then flew northward, keeping to the river's side and looking around every minute or so, still not having seen any strange looking birds. Eventually night began to fall and the family needed to stop and sleep for the night, being too dangerous to be out in the darkness. As Bia, Carla, and Tiago were fast asleep, Blu and Jewel were still up.

"How much further do you think we have to go Jewel?" Blu asked politely.

"I don't know, but I'll search all of the Amazon if I have to." Jewel answered. "I'll find her no matter what it takes."

"We will Jewel, but knowing more would be nice." Blu pointed out. "I just hope someone as nice as Miguel shows up and helps us." Blu wished as the night passed by quietly.

Unknown to Blu and Jewel, someone was watching them from the shadows, someone who took a very particular interest in seeing the bright blue birds out this far from their tribe…

Morning came and after a quick breakfast, the family resumed their search and just like yesterday, came across nothing of interest, well at least what they were originally looking for. Midday came and the family landed down on the ground, stopping for a rest as Bia looked in interest at some exotic flowers, Tiago meanwhile took a "call to nature" elsewhere, while Carla decided to take a nap. Blu and Jewel discussed what they were going to do next as suddenly they heard Tiago shouting loudly.

"Tiago!" Both Blu and Jewel shouted back as they ran to where Tiago was, followed by Bia and Carla as they found Tiago facing off against a snake.

"Easy there little one, I'm a friend." The snake hissed somewhat menacingly as Tiago, relieved his family came, backed up to Jewel.

"Who are you and what do you want!?" Blu demanded.

"You're Blue macaws right?" The snake asked. "I seen birds like you nearby." The snake hissed as Jewel brightened up, stepping to front of Blu.

"Can you show us?" Jewel smiled.

"Of course, if you follow me, I'll take you to them." The snake replied as he began to slither away, Jewel beginning to follow the untrustworthy creature.

"Jewel, you're not really considering following him are you?" Blu grabbing hold of Jewel's wing to stop her.

"Look Blu, I told you I'll find her no matter what and I'll take anything from anyone to find her." Jewel answered. "And if this snake is lying then we can just fly away and he can't get us." Jewel reminded Blu.

"Alright, but don't say I didn't warn you." Blu still not up for this idea as the family followed the snake.

The snake led the family to a rocky den, the snake leading the Blue macaw family inside as it was darker in there of course and quiet… Too quiet…

"Why would they be here?" Blu asked the snake.

"Probably to stay hidden." Jewel replied. "How much further?" Jewel turning to the snake.

"Just a little more…" The snake answered as he led the family deeper and deeper inside and soon enough it was so dark the family could barely see a few inches ahead of them.

"No way they're here, why did you…" Blu began, but the snake shouted out…

"Dinner's here boys and it's a really exotic one!" The snake called out as the family suddenly saw multiple glowing eyes of snakes slithering slowly towards them from every direction, surrounding them.

"Mom, dad…" Bia shook in fear along with her brother and sister.

"You tricked us!" Jewel roared in anger.

"Did I?" The snake who "helped" the family taunted back as the snakes got closer and closer, the family backing up into each other as there was no way out of this…

All of a sudden, one of the snakes lunged froward and bit Blu, venom going through him as Blu fell down, with Jewel looking towards him as she noticed this. That move blinded Jewel to another snake taking a bite of her and incapacitating her, which left the kids…

"Nowhere to run little ones…" The snakes said as the kids were super afraid of what was going to happen next as Jewel tried to fight through the poison running through her boy, fighting to keep her eyes open, but struggling as she watched her kids.

And then the unexpected happened… All of a sudden the snakes' behavior changed as Jewel couldn't quite believe it, but she heard the flapping of multiple wings and the snakes fighting a group of macaws and forcing them to back up. The last thing Jewel saw was a macaw with strange face paint looking at her before picking her up as Jewel's world became completely dark now…

And I'll end it there!

I think you all may know what happens next, but you're going to have to wait for next chapter to be sure!

Until than…

See everybird later!
