Skid gestured to a nearby hill with a paw. "That's where we'll train. Come on, let's go!"

"How exactly are we going to do this?" I asked, walking beside him.

"Well, it's quite simple. I'm going to let you use your moves on me."

"That kinda sounds like a bad idea. Isn't there some kind of stationary target I could use?"

"Well, there's a lot of trees around, but I want you to get the feel of a real battle."

By this point, we had reached the top of the hill. Skid told me to stay where I was, walked in front of me, then turned to face me. "Hit me with your best shot," he said, walking backwards to give me space.

"How? I know what my moves are, but not how to use them!"

"Well, at least for me, it's always been pretty simple. I just think hard about using one of my moves, and then it happens. I imagine it's harder with some moves than others, but all of my moves were very easy to master."

"I guess I'll try... Ember?"

"Don't guess it or try it. Think it."

"Okay." This probably isn't going to work, but whatever. Ember. Em-ber. Ember!

Suddenly, a massive ball of heat rose in my throat, escaping from my mouth before I could stop it! A mote of flame shot forwards away from me, hitting Skid in the ear. He flinched, but seemed otherwise unfazed.

"Well done! That was indeed Ember! A little on the weak side, but it was your very first time."

I smirked. "Maybe I just didn't want to hit you that hard."

Skid chuckled, shaking his head. "Sure. Now try another move!"

"I'll go for Quick Attack next. That seems simple enough, I just have to attack quickly."

"Oh really? Think it and see what happens."

Quick Attack. Quick... Attack!

My muscles began to tense up, getting ready to spring me forward into a sprint. I released, and suddenly I was right in front of Skid, then hitting him with a flying tackle. As the attack ended, I found myself standing nearly on my toes, almost about to tip over. I righted myself, then had a look at what was in front of me. Just grass, no Skid. Where'd he go?

"Ugh, that certainly hit harder than your Ember."

I turned around and saw Skid prone on the ground, looking dazed. Not only did my attack hit hard, it also sent me clean past Skid! "Whoa. Are you okay, Skid?"

"I'll live. That was very impressive, though! I've never seen a Quick Attack quite that fast!"

"Really?"

"No doubt about it!" exclaimed Skid, getting back up. "Now, hit me with another move."

I walked back to my original position and turned to face him once again. "Next up is Double Kick, then."

Skid's eyes went wide. "Let's skip that one."

"Why?"

"Well, I'm a Dark type Pokemon, and Double Kick is a Fighting type move. The matchup there is certainly not in my favor, and while it may have been your first time using it, I probably would have gotten seriously hurt."

"I... I have no idea what any of that means," I said, shrugging.

Skid looked dumbfounded but quickly recovered. "I'll explain that later, I guess. Try your other move then."

"That'd be Heat Press."

"Ah, that's the one I'm unfamiliar with! Well, go for it!"

Heat Press. Heat... Press!

My muscles tensed again, but this time only in my legs and feet, preparing to make me jump. I released, and I was in the air, my feet on a collision course with Skid's head. I landed, slamming Skid's head into the grass. Then my feet started to heat up, the temperature rising quickly but somehow causing me no discomfort. The muscles in my legs and feet tensed up again, and I jumped back off of Skid's head in a burst of flame!

As I landed back where I was before the attack, Skid shakily got to his feet. "Ouch. That stings, like, a lot."

I looked at his head and noticed rectangular singe marks where my feet had been. "What the..."

I took one of my feet into my paws and examined it closely. There in the middle of my foot was a yellow rectangular pad. Is that the source of the heat?

Skid took notice of what I was doing and stumbled over, obviously still feeling some pain. "That move was definitely something. And yes, those pads on your feet can generate heat. It's kind of a trademark for Scorbunny like yourself."

"That's really cool! So, do you want to keep training?"

"No, I'm done. I was under the impression that your attacks wouldn't do much to me, but considering the pain I am currently experiencing, that wasn't exactly the case. Perhaps you're more battle-ready than I thought!"

"That's good. To be honest, hitting you with all these attacks wasn't a good time for me, either. If I don't have to do it again, that's just fine with me."

Skid chuckled. "Alright Xylus, let's get back home. I'm starving!"

"Can you teach me all that type matchup stuff on the way back?"

"Sure thing. First up, we have Fire type, that's what you are..."
