Duncan practically rushed his girlfriend out of the car and up to their apartment. Courtney wasn't having the easiest days of work, and he was sure his surprise would lift her out of her midweek slump. He unlocked the door and they were met with a mess of old mail and pillow feathers strewn across the floor.
"What the hell happened to our living room? This is what you've been dying for me to see?"
"Don't look at me. For once, this isn't my fault."
"Then who's fault is it?!"
"Benny's."
"Who's-?" Courtney turned her head at the sound of small steps behind her to see the culprit. An incredibly small Jack Russell puppy looking up at her with a wagging tail. He yipped at her excitedly as she bent down to hold him in her arms. She stood up to face Duncan while the puppy persisted on licking her face. She had not met anything this excited to meet her. She tried getting a better look at him, holding him at arms length.
"Surprise!"
"Oh my gosh! Hi baby!" She held him closer to her face, letting him have free reign on her face again. "Where did you come from?"
"My boss' dog had a litter and I thought I could surprise you. Don't worry he's got all his shots and enough food to last for a month. And he's cute enough to forget about the tornado he unleashed."
"It's not little Benny's fault. He's just a baby. A cute, little baby. It is your fault by proxy."
