Disclaimer: I don't own Torchwood or its characters
A/N: I am very sorry I haven't updated this for a while. I hit a writers block with it. I know how its going to end but it's the chapters between now and near the end I hit a block on, but thankfully I am past that and I have nearly finished writing it so updates will be regular now. Hope you all enjoy it!
The New Recruit
"Bloody Torchwood!"
Ianto purposely didn't look sideways at Jack.
"I can't believe I'm inside bloody Torchwood!"
Ianto watched as Andy clung to Gwen as the lift was lowering. Ianto suspected he wasn't clinging to Gwen solely out of fear.
"So this is your great replacement?" Jack whispered leaning in. "I don't think he will last two weeks."
Ianto shot him a look. "Perhaps he would be a lot less intimidated if he came through the tourist office like I suggested. You just wanted to show off."
Andy yelped as Myfanwy flew past. Jack started to laugh but stopped when Ianto gave him The Look. He stepped forward as the lift stopped and held out his hand.
"Welcome Andy. Yes this really is, as you like to say, bloody Torchwood" Ianto said with a smile.
Andy shook his hand and continued to look round in wonder.
"I'm Captain Jack Harkness, leader here at Torchwood" Jack said stepping forward. "And over there we have Toshiko Sato, our tech expert, and our medic Owen Harper."
"DOCTOR Owen Harper!" Owen yelled.
Andy gave a nervous laugh. "Was that really a pterodactyl up there?" he asked pointing up.
"A pteranadon" Ianto corrected him.
They watched as Myfanwy circled around screeching before returning to her nest.
"This is incredible!" Andy exclaimed.
He gazed round in wonder as they led him up to Jack's office. Ianto made them all coffee and sat next to Jack whilst Andy and Gwen sat on the other side. Andy groaned as he sipped it. "Now I know what Gwen is talking about. This is amazing!"
Ianto nodded and sat down next to Jack, watching them all wistfully as they sipped their coffees. He'd already had his one cup for the day and was regretting it. Jack seemed to know how Ianto was feeling as he put his hand on his leg and squeezed it. Andy obviously noticed but didn't say anything.
Jack put his mug downed and leaned back in his chair. "So Andy. First things first. Torchwood isn't special ops or secret service. We are a top secret organisation who specialise in aliens, outside the government beyond the police."
"Aliens? In Cardiff?!" Andy said wide eyed.
"There is a rift in space and time that runs through Cardiff. Objects and aliens fall through it from all over the universe. Even people fall through from different time periods. It's our job to protect the city from invaders, help those who are lost because of the rift, and gather the alien technology before the wrong people do. We use the technology to arm the human race. The 21st century is when everything changes, and we've got to be ready."
Ianto had to admit that Andy wasn't looking like he was about to bolt after Jack's generic Torchwood welcome speech. Ianto looked at Gwen who also rolled her eyes. Jack likes his dramatic speeches.
"I thought aliens only invaded London at Christmas? Aliens are really here in Cardiff?!" Andy asked. "And those metal men? Those weren't a mass hallucination? They were real? They were really rounding people up to do something to them?"
Ianto shuddered as the memories came flooding back. Jack took his hand and Ianto squeezed it gratefully.
"Yes, they were what we call Cybermen, and they came from a parallel universe. We can't tell you much more than that until you have signed the appropriate agreements" Ianto said.
Andy nodded. "Wow" was all he could say. He shook his head as he tried to wrap his head round all this new information. "So, why am I here? What do you need me for?"
"We have space in the team for a field agent" Jack said. "You were recommended to me so I am offering you a two week trial period. During this time you will be immersed fully into Torchwood and expected to get involved and assist in what we call rift alerts. You need to understand Andy, this is a dangerous job. I can't guarantee you will survive the next two weeks. But I can promise you this, your eyes will be opened and your view of life changed forever. So what do you think? Do you want to do the trial period?"
Ianto noticed that Andy had gone very white. He glared at Jack. He knew Jack was testing Andy's nerve before showing him the weevil but still, he went overboard. He caught Gwen's eye and saw she agreed with him. Ianto stood up.
"Gwen why don't we take Andy on a tour of the main area and then down to the vaults where we will introduce him to Janet" he said.
Gwen led the still stunned Andy out of the office. Ianto stopped and turned at the doorway.
"Carry on like that Jack and I will make sure you don't survive the next two weeks" he said sternly before turning and leaving.
"Hormones" Jack chuckled to himself.
The next few days were a roller coaster for the team, especially Andy. To Jack's amazement he didn't freak out at meeting Janet. He'd been more interested and asked lots of questions about her and weevils in general. The rift had been particularly active and Andy had thrown himself into the job. He'd been banged about but nothing dulled his enthusiasm. Jack had to admit it was refreshing. He stood with Ianto at the railing and watching Gwen fussing Andy.
"Don't think I don't know the real reason you suggested Andy" Jack said.
Ianto turned to him. "And what reason is that?"
Jack grinned. "You knew having Andy would mean Gwen would focus her mothering and fussing on him over you."
Ianto shrugged. "That's a bonus."
Jack watched the scene below him. Tosh had joined them on the sofa. Andy was fitting in well to the team. He got on well with everyone. He was good with the public. But what Jack liked was that Andy had an understanding that the world wasn't all black and white, that there were many grey areas, especially when it came to Torchwood. He had accepted they had to do certain unethical things to protect people from finding out the truth. He hadn't had one argument with him. In fact he had stopped Gwen from starting one with him over orders and reminded her who was really in charge. Maybe Andy would be a good fit.
"So you have firearms training with him this afternoon" Ianto said.
Jack nodded. "I'm going in as if he has never held a gun. We'll see how good a shot he is."
"Try to keep the flirtations and groping to a minimum" Ianto said dryly. "Don't want to scare him off."
Jack shot him a cheeky grin. "I didn't hear you complaining when I was testing you."
Ianto was about to respond when he saw Owen approaching.
"Gentleman! I'm here to tell you that today is 12 week scan day today. Rift willing, shall we say 3pm, after Andy's training? I can send Gwen and Andy off somewhere as I'm guessing Andy doesn't know yet?"
Ianto shook his head. "One thing at a time. Don't want to scare him off."
"What do you think of him Owen?" Jack asked.
Owen shrugged. "He's alright. Doesn't exactly stand out, but then we try not to being a secret organisation."
Jack nodded. "Andy! Firearms training time!" he called.
Ianto settled himself on the bed, lifting his shirt up and braced himself for the cold jelly. It had only been a week since the last scan but he couldn't wait to see the baby again. Jack held his hand and they both held their breaths as Owen moved the doppler around. Suddenly they were greeting with two feet.
"Looks like he is having a sideways nap at the moment" Jack said laughing.
Owen moved the doppler around until he finally found the baby's head and chest. They all stared at the little fluttering of the heart. Before he knew it Ianto was crying.
"This is just amazing. Look at what we have created Jack!" he sobbed.
"He is a miracle" Jack kissed Ianto's hand. "Our miracle."
"Can you tell the gender this early?" Ianto asked.
"I'm just assuming" Jack said.
"20 week scan we should be able to tell" Owen said. "If you want to know."
Jack looked at Ianto and shrugged. "I don't mind if we find out or not."
"Well you have a while to think about it" Owen said.
Ianto lay there staring at the screen whilst Owen took measurements and readings. After 20 minutes there was whirring sound and Owen handed Ianto a scan picture.
"To put on your fridge or where ever. I know couples like pictures" he said.
Ianto just stared at the picture. His heart swelled with love for this little one. He looked at Jack who was also staring at it in wonder. Jack leaned in to give him a kiss when they suddenly a voice say loudly "Ianto's pregnant?!"
They looked up to see Andy doing a brilliant impression of a goldfish. Ianto couldn't help but laugh.
"Welcome to Torchwood Andy."
After reassuring Andy that Ianto wasn't an alien in disguise, and yes he really was pregnant and that is why he was off field duty and why they were looking for someone Andy calmed down. It was now his final few days of his trial period and Ianto had a feeling they would all vote to keep him on, if Andy wanted to stay. Ianto hoped he would, he liked him and was proving to be an efficient field agent who also handed his reports in on time with no spelling mistakes, a quality much appreciated by Ianto.
The rift alarm went off. He and Tosh raced to her station, with Andy just behind.
"A drop in Splott, could be a live one but it's hard to get a reading." She looked at Ianto. "Can you co-ordinate? Jack's on the phone to the PM and Gwen and Owen are on the other drop in Cathays."
"Sure" Ianto said sliding into her seat. He popped in an earpiece and passed Tosh and Andy theirs. "Good luck" he said to them.
They nodded and ran to Tosh's car.
10 minutes later he heard Andy's voice. "We've arrived. Nothing obvious at the moment."
"Stay alert Andy" Ianto replied. The computer beeped and he pulled up another window. "Looks like it's a live one."
There was silence before he heard Tosh say "Ianto we've got a Hoix."
A few minutes later he heard gun shots, followed by snarling and a yell.
"Jack!" Ianto shouted.
Jack came running out. "What's happened?"
"Tosh and Andy are on a retrieval. It's a Hoix. There was a yell and now I can't get hold of them. Gwen and Owen are still in Cathays!" He looked worriedly at Jack.
"Tell them I'm on my way!" Jack said grabbing his coat.
Ianto tossed him his car keys. "Use my car."
Jack nodded and ran to the garage.
Ianto tried looking for CCTV but the Hoix had landed in a residential area where there were no cameras. He took deep breaths and hoped everyone would be ok.
"Ow!"
"Will you stop whining so I can finish stitching you up. Unless you want your guts to fall out!"
Ianto and Jack watched as Andy and Owen bickered in the med bay.
"Don't you have a decent bedside manner?" Andy asked.
"Don't expect that sort of miracle!" Ianto called. Owen glared up at him.
Ianto glanced at Jack who looked deep in thought. Ianto knew that Jack was deeply impressed with Andy. The Hoix had lunged at Tosh and Andy had pushed her out of the way. The Hoix had clawed him but Tosh had shot it before it could take a bite out of him. Ianto was impressed that Andy wasn't a gibbering wreck. Hoix weren't exactly the best looking aliens even without their aggressive nature. Owen finished stitching Andy up and wrapping him up.
"Rest and light duties for a few days until the stitches dissolve" Owen said, looking up at Jack. Jack nodded.
"Go home and rest up Andy. Stay home tomorrow and take it easy" he said.
Andy looked up at him in surprise. "But its only 3.30?"
"And you're injured and have been ordered by the doctor to rest, so go home and rest and I'll see you in a couple of days" Jack said firmly.
Andy nodded and slowly made his way to his station to grab his coat and keys before leaving. Ianto saw Tosh help him then give him a gentle hug. After he left Jack called everyone to the conference room. They all sat in their usual places. Jack leaned back in his chair.
"So Andy's two weeks are nearly up. We need to decide now whether he remains and becomes a full member of the team, or whether to retcon and return him to his life before" Jack said.
"I think he should stay" Tosh said immediately. "He's a hard worker, he has shown interest in learning about alien tech, and most of all he is brave. He saved my life today. He didn't run away screaming from that Hoix, he faced it down alongside me."
Jack nodded. "Owen?"
Owen shrugged. "A bit wimpy when I was stitching him, but with experience he'll toughen up. And he showed some pretty big balls today taking on that Hoix like he did. He has my respect."
Ianto raised his eyebrows at that. He never thought he would hear Owen admit he respected anyone. He glanced at Gwen and knew what she was going to say.
"I think he should stay. He has taken everything we have thrown at him and he is still here. As far as I'm concerned he has proven what a good fit he will be" Gwen said.
Jack turned to Ianto. "And you?"
"I agree with what everyone has said. I think Andy is a great addition to the team, even after having to spend an hour convincing him I'm actually a human male who was the victim of a tech accident rather than some random alien" he said.
"Well it's unanimous then" Jack announced. "Ianto if you can get the full paperwork sorted for when he gets back. Tosh, start setting up logins and codes for him. Owen get his medical records and download them onto our server."
They all nodded and left to their respective tasks except Ianto.
"You've made the right choice" Ianto said, taking Jack's hand. "He really is a good bloke."
"He is. I have to admit I had my doubts, but as usual you were right" Jack replied, squeezing Ianto's hand. "Thank you for making me see sense about needing to add to the team. It just felt like I was replacing you."
"I'm irreplaceable when it comes to the coffee machine" Ianto laughed.
"You are irreplaceable full stop. Both of you" Jack said stroking Ianto's stomach before kissing him.
"So, do you think we should make Andy godfather? Since he's the most normal out of all of us" Ianto asked, winking.
"Hey I am normal!" Jack said. He started laughing when he saw Ianto's face. "Well, maybe in the 51st century."
They laughed together before gathering the empty mugs and leaving the conference room, happy knowing they'd made the right decision.
