Chapter 6: Mary
Dr. Lane jumped up from her chair, glaring towards the door as several silhouettes passed by. Red flashed through her office and the alarm wailed in the background.
She quickly reached for the door, flinching as she almost misstepped on her high heel. From the doorway, personnel ran past like headless chickens. What a mess. Lane thought as she stared down the corridor.
"Eliz—. I mean, Doctor Lane." A voice boomed in the distance. Dr. Clifford stumbled through the hallway, leaving a trail of fallen papers behind him as he puffed for air, showing how much he was out of shape.
"Doctor Clifford, did an scp break lose?" Lane asked as she closed the door behind her.
Clifford leaned down, picking up some papers as his sleeve wiped past his moistened forehead. "Yeah, it's 5899 again. Apparently, there was a breach in protocol. MTF-Fortuna is searching for her as we speak."
Lane pinched the bridge of her nose. "5899 again? I swear, this is happening a bit too often lately. Who was it that failed to follow containment procedures this time?"
"It was Billy... He was the one in charge. Man, I hope they aren't too harsh on him. Thankfully it was just 5899 and not an actually dangerous Keter, if you know what I mean." Clifford chuckled while cautiously waving his hand in the air.
Dr. Lane stopped in her tracks, narrowing her eyes. "Clifford, what are you saying? Scp 5899 may not look and act 'dangerous', but she is far from harmless. You weren't there during the domino effect. A lot of good people died that day. To say that 5899 is not dangerous, is really uncalled for."
Dr. Clifford stepped back. "Sorry Lane, I meant no disrespect." He opened his mouth, ready to continue, but he held his tongue.
After taking a deep breath, Lane reopened the door, ready to step through. "Wait up Lane, aren't you going to see the conference?" Clifford asked.
Lane stepped into her office as she answered past her shoulder. "No need. I already know the protocol. We are to stay put until the escaped scp is retrieved and back in containment... I have too much work to do and the conference is only for new personal anyway. Now, if you will excuse me Doctor Clifford."
Before Clifford could say another word, the door slammed shut. He looked down, carefully wiping some leftover crumbs from his lab coat as he let out a soft sigh.
"Tough luck huh." A strong voice called out behind him, sounding much like an middle aged man who smoked one to many cigarettes in his life.
Clifford turned around, seeing a tall, skinny and unnaturally pale man standing down the hallway. Waving towards him with a broad grin.
"Oh, hey Danial." Clifford said. "Yeah, tough luck indeed. I think Lane hates me."
The now named Danial chuckled. "Ah, don't worry, she dislikes everyone. Part of he reason why she's still single. Doctor Lane is a true mystery."
"What do you mean?" Clifford asked.
Something to do with the rumors surrounding her. After all, not much is known about her personal life, since she doesn't talk about it. But they say she used to be cheerful and kind. And that she turned bitter after her daughter was killed by an scp."
"What! My god, that's awful." Clifford cried in horror.
"Don't forget that it's only a rumor. Some say she never had any children and that she's just a grumpy person. Others are faithful to the idea that she used to be nice... I even heard a silly joke that her ex husband is one of the O5. Now that's story I love to know more about." Danial said while grinning like an idiot.
Clifford looked down. Despite her attitude, Lane was very popular among the staff and researchers. Even some D class fancy her... And he would be lying to himself if he said that he didn't feel the same. There was something about that woman. He just didn't know what it was. She's cold, grumpy, stern and yet...
He jumped back to reality when Danial tapped against his back. "Don't fall asleep now. The conference has started." He whispered.
Clifford looked up towards a small monitor, watching the message displayed by his superior... He sighed. It really was just like Lane said...
Autumn looked up as a strange alarm echoed behind the walls. What was going on? Did something happen?
She slowly moved from the bed. As she was about to stand up a sharp pain rushed through her head, followed by a series of images and sounds.
——
Autumn ran past the corner, swiftly making her way down a narrow hallway. Red light flared up. Footsteps closed in behind her. She tried to look back, but her foot hooked behind her own leg and she stumbled towards the ground.
Her eyes quickly glanced past her shoulder, but she couldn't see anything. Someone grabbed her by the hand and pulled her back up from the cold ground.
——
Autumn immediately jumped back to reality as she heard a soft voice giggle. Her heart fluttered into overdrive as she shot around. "Who's there!" She yelled.
Standing behind her was an awfully familiar looking girl. Her caramel-brown eyes shimmered underneath a perfect mane of curled hair the color of dark chocolate.
Despite the harsh light her smooth tanned skin looked extremely exotic. Autumn almost stared in awe. Unlike her, the girl was much more refined and with a height that made any model look green with envy.
The girl giggled again. Looking at Autumn in delight as she said in a soft, almost childlike voice. "Hello."
Autumn stared into the girl's large eyes that sparkled with curiosity. Then it hit her. She finally realized why the girl looked so familiar. "Mary, is that you?" She asked hesitantly.
The girl who was obviously a lot taller than her smiled brighter than the sun. Laughing as she leaped forward, grabbing Autumn into an embrace of death. "Yes, in the flesh... haha, how long has it been, 6 years? 7 years? Whaaa, it's been too long! Wow, we have so much catching up to do!" She yelled enthusiastically.
Autumn's face burned red as Mary tightened her grip, squeezing to the point she had trouble breathing. "Mary please stop... Stop... You're crushing me..." She uttered underneath her breath while gasping for air.
Mary blinked a couple of times. Releasing Autumn who bowed over and coughed. She let her longs fill before looking up again. "Why are you here?" She asked cautiously. The last time Autumn saw Mary, it was just before the accident with her parents.
Mary pouted her lips while ticking against her cheek. "Uhm...Oh, yeah, it's a long story. This really nice lady told me I'm a... Uh, what was it called again? Svb?"
"Scp?" Autumn corrected.
"Yeah, that one! The really nice lady told me I was a special person called scp. She was really nice, I like her a lot. Anyway, she gave me this really nice room filled with lots of cute stuff, and I can ask for whatever I want!"
Mary paused for a moment. "Oh, by the way. I heard someone say that there are really, like super delicious hamburgers on the menu today. I'm going to get one. Do you want to join me?"
"Hamburger? But how? We can't just—."
Mary shook her head, determination burning in her eyes. "We can!"
Autumn stared dumbfound at Mary. Was she serious? She couldn't be, right? Feeling a bit unsure about the situation Autumn mumbled. "I don't know..."
Mary nodded with a somewhat prideful expression as she grabbed Autumn's wrist without warning. "Come on, it will be fun!"
Autumn stumbled when Mary pulled her towards the door. Stopping at the edge of the room and glancing down the crimson corridor, which seemed to endlessly stretch out into the darkness.
What struck Autumn as strange, was how empty it seemed. There was no one, not even a single guard. It reminded her of those creepy abandoned places you see in movies, where a monster is hiding around every corner...
Mary let go of her hand, skipping forward and hopping around like she was dancing. "Come on, hurry up!" She said with a wide grin.
Autumn took a deep breath, stepping forward as her hands clutched against the wall.
Everything looked like it was covered in a scarlet filter. Even she herself was completely engulfed in a red hue. The muffled alarm kept screaming in the background, which made the grim atmosphere even worse.
"Where is everybody?" Autumn asked as she took another step.
Mary looked back. "I don't know, maybe they're already eating hamburgers!"
"I highly doubt that..." Autumn whispered.
A man leaned back in his chair. He had seen better days. The flashing red light and lack of sleep was migraine inducing to say the least. All that kept him awake at this point was the unhealthy amount of caffeine piled up inside his system. He really needed a break... Maybe even a holiday... or two.
The sun burning on his skin, the refreshing cold salty water on his body, the rough sand underneath his feet and the sweet aroma of sunscreen. Yeah, he really needed a break...
As the man let out a long yawn his eyes fell back on the security monitor before him. He blinked... Wait, is the cell... empty? He blinked again.
His migraine and tiredness were instantly cured as he bolted upright, adrenaline rushing through his body like a wild steam. Oh no... He broke into a cold sweat as his eyes searched across the monitor.
Gone... SCP-6100 was gone... He had one job. How could this happen? His breathing fastened. He was going to get demoted for this, or worse fired! The man quickly clicked on the rewind button.
He watched with anticipation as the security tape played in reverse. There! He pressed stop. His eyes glaring towards the two figures standing inside the cell. The one in the back was 6100... The other...
Wait, is that... His eyes widened as his mouth curled into a soft grin. He may not lose his job today after all.
Autumn closely followed behind Mary as they passed around the corner. The place was a labyrinth. Every hall, room and door all looked exactly the same. How do people find anything in a place like this!
She looked towards Mary, who looked less bothered by the confusing layout and in all honesty, seemed to know exactly where she was going... Autumn let her longs deflate as her eyes fell on Mary's jumpsuit.
What seemed ugly on her, actually looked surprisingly good on Mary. The gray one-piece highlighted her curved features perfectly and looked extremely pleasing to the eye. She peeked towards the large number '5899' printed on the back. "Hey Mary." She asked.
"Hm..." Mary mumbled as she craned passed her shoulder.
Autumn continued. "Earlier you said that they called you 'a special person'. That means you have some kind of ability, right? What kind of 'special' or 'weird' ability do you have?"
"Mmm... Well, I'm just really lucky! A lot of things go my way, I guess." Mary responded with a wide grin.
"Lucky?... Aha, okay." Autumn muttered as her eyes wandered across the endless number of doors. She wouldn't have called it 'lucky' to be stuck here, but okay...
Maybe, if they continued walking like this, she would find an exit!... And then she could leave, go home and hopefully forget all of this ever happened...
Autumn's eyes fell on the second last door, which was, unlike the rest, still open. Enticing whoever passed by to enter.
Her hand slowly moved across the pale smoky -gray door, opening it as a soft creak echoed throughout the corridor.
The room seemed darker than the brightly lit scarlet hall. A bit too dark... She blinked a couple of times, trying to get used to the sudden change in light. The distinct smell of paper and cleaning solution invaded her senses. It reminded her of that new library near her house. She had been there only ones, but it left quite the lasting impression. Though she highly doubted that this was anything like a library.
She let her longs fill with air before carefully proceeding. In the back, a lone lightbulb flickered. Creating menacing shadows all across the room. Autumn took another step, gulping as the place looked nothing short of a horror movie scene. How could people ever work in a place like this?
Her hand searched across the wall, trying to find another light switch. "Hey Mary, can you help me with something?" She yelled passed her shoulder.
Mary peeked around the corner. "What are you doing Autumn? The hamburgers are this way."
"Mary, can you please help me find a light switch? I have a feeling there is something here that might help us."
Mary smiled as her hand flipped across the switch, which she to no surprise instantly found. Something buzzed in the distance and the room slowly came back to life.
It was a lot smaller than Autumn originally had thought. A lot cleaner too... It was even cleaner than her adoptive mother's kitchen, and that was saying a lot. Not a single speck of dust, dirt or discoloration was visible across the glossy marble-white floor.
What immediately grabbed her attention were the rows of charcoal-gray file cabinets lined up against the side. She walked over, giving the cabinet a good rumble. Damn, it was locked. She tried another cabinet, which was also locked.
Autumn ticked against her arm, cautiously glaring around the room. There had to be a key or something.
"Oh, what's that?" Mary asked as she walked towards the cabinet. All it took was one tap and the cabinet slid open, practically jumping as if the lock suddenly broke. Revealing the hundreds of large paper-files stored inside.
Seeing this, curiosity took over. Autumn flicked her fingers across the top. Her eyes wandering from cover to cover. Each file had a different number stamped on. Along with some strange text's that didn't make much sense.
'SCP-706_Perfect porcelain doll'
...
'SCP-1702_The French hive.'
...
'SCP-5899_Lucky girl.'
...
Autumn's eyes sticked to the third entry like glue. 5899... That was the number printed on Mary's jumpsuit. She held her breath as her fingers curled around the document, pulling it out before carefully folding the cover open.
'Item #: SCP-5899
Object Class: Keter
Containment:
SCP-5899 is to be kept in a secure 9 by 9 cubic meter holding cell with a contacted bathroom, table, bed, computer (under NO circumstances is there a connection to internet) and at least 10 plush toys, video games and comics to its choice.
All 8 doors to containment cell are to be checked and maintained at least 7 times a day. In case a door is faulty, this must be fixed immediately.'
Autumn stopped reading as her vision blurred and a series of images flashed through her mind.
——
She looked up as her face was pressed against a cold wall. Sweat slowly trickled down her neck as her eyes were unable to sever from the door. Which was shaking violently.
Shadows moved across and before she knew it, a loud crack echoed through the room. The doorknob fell to the ground and several armed soldiers walked in...
——
Autumn gasped as she nearly dropped the file from her hands. "Mary, we need to go, now!" She hissed towards her confused friend.
Her heart skipped a beat as she heard muffled voices in the distance coming towards them. She quickly stuffed the paper file into her jumpsuit, closing the cabinet door as she grabbed Mary's arm. "This way." Autumn whispered while moving towards a small metallic desk.
In her vision she just hid against the wall. That wasn't an option. Running into the corridor was definitely not an option. If they were to walk in, she would stand a better chance by actually hiding.
"What are you doing?" Mary said as she looked back.
Without saying a thing, Autumn pushed her friend underneath the desk, quickly following behind.
"Did you hear that?" A deep voice called from outside the room.
"Affirmative, the lights are turned on." Another responded.
Autumn swallowed as she peeked passed the desk. Pressing her warm face against the cold metallic sheen as a small drop of sweat made its way down her neck.
Elongated shadows moved across from underneath the door. She couldn't tell how many people were outside... Two, five, ten... Autumn took a deep breath, trying to crawl backwards, flinching when her moist back hit the wall.
She froze like a deer in headlights. The doorknob slowly ruffled up and down. Why didn't I turn off the light? Autumn thought to herself. Who knows what they might do if she was found! Her heart throbbed as she felt Mary breathing into her neck. The cramped moving space didn't help at all.
The doorknob shook again... and again... and again. Each time more violently than before...
"It's locked?" A voice called out again.
"Just use your keycard." Another responded.
Autumn looked back at Mary, who seemed confused of what was going on. "Why are we hiding?" She whispered. "Oh, I get it." She giggled softly before continuing. "We're playing hide and seek, aren't we?"
Autumn stared dumbfounded. She knew Mary wasn't the brightest, but this level of ignorance was just ridiculous! They were in serious danger and she thinks it's a game?!
Mary's eyes seemed to darken as she grinned, whispering. "Don't worry, they'll leave now."
"What do you—." Before Autumn could continue, the voices outside spoke up again.
"They are not here." They all said simultaneously, in an very unsettling and emotionless tone.
"What?" Autumn whispered as she glared towards the door, seeing the shadows rush passed further down the hallway. Her mouth dropped. What was going on?! In her vision, they clearly forced their way through the door. So why didn't they?...
"That was fun!" Mary said as she crawled from underneath the desk, stretched her back and skipped towards the door, which immediately clicked open, despite being locked before.
Autumn stared at her old friend in awe. What happened back there? Mary said that they would go away... and as soon as she did, they left without question. "Hey Mary, you said that you're lucky, right?" She asked hesitantly.
"Jep." Mary responded.
"What did you mean with 'lucky'?"
"... I don't know. That's what my dad always said. Everything always goes the way I want. That's called being lucky, right?"
"So, like with the door, the light switch, the cabinet and those people just now... It was all because of some ridiculous amount of luck?"
"I guess so...But more importantly, let's go get those hamburgers! I'm really hungry right now." Mary said as she puffed up her cheeks.
"No! You can't just—."
"Yes, I can! I always can! Things always go my way! My WAY! So, let's go already!" Mary yelled as she clutched her fists, jumping up and down, acting like a 7-year-old throwing a tantrum. A 7-year-old in the body of a 17-year-old...
Autumn pinched the bridge of her nose. What was she going to do with this spoiled child? Did she really had to be the 'adult' here.
"Mary, if you don't stop this right now... We are going to turn around and... THERE WILL BE NO HAMBURGERS!" Autumn said, mimicking her adoptive mother's tone.
Mary froze in place. Her massive brown eyes darkened as they filled with water. "But... but... but...I... I..." She stuttered as her lip quivered and tears slowly rolled down her cheeks.
Autumn swallowed when a strange wave of nausea washed over her. She felt weird... The air seemed heavy and it was getting difficult to breathe. There was this tingling sensation underneath her skin, followed by a tsunami of guilt.
What had she done! She made an old friend cry... Even if Mary was a bit strange and most of all an absolute child... She was still a friend.
"Sorry Mary, that was not very nice of me to say..." Autumn muttered as her face flushed red.
Mary looked back up, tears still glistering in her eyes as her lips curled into a wide grin. "Good... Then let's go to the cafeteria." She whispered happily.
"Okay." Autumn replied, still feeling a little dizzy and strange.
(Auteurs note: I changed a miner detail from the previous chapter. I originally had described Mary as 'Ethiopian' but I didn't do my homework and the term was incorrect. Sorry for any inconvenience.)
Ones again, thank you for reading this chapter. Like always, more will follow.
Sorry for the wait. I was struggling a bit with this chapter. I took this month the time to think more about where I wanted to go with this story. I already had a rough timeline of events and now I decided to go more into details. What happens per chapter and things like character development.
Sometimes I may take a bit longer to update since I have things like school to focus on, especially with the whole pandemic. But do not worry, I will complete this story! So, more chapters will come.
——
I have finally introduced the second main character of this story! Mary a.k.a SCP-5899. 'Disclaimer: The number 5899 is only for this story as Mary is an OC character.' (OC scp file of Mary down below.) I made Mary in contrast to Autumn. They're opposites from one and other in terms of both appearance and personality. Autumn has a more negative approach on certain situations. That's why I wanted Mary to be someone with a child like view on the world, someone who can always see things in a happy and positive light. But has a slightly creepy vibe at times.
A friendly reminder that Keter means: Very difficult to contain. It does not necessarily mean that its super dangerous. (Though it mostly is.)
I made Mary as a Keter since it would be very difficult (if not impossible) to contain something that could just walk out if it ever wanted to. For example: there are 8 doors in place, all with high level security. Mary comes close and all doors malfunction at the same time, creating an open pathway. Things like guns stop working when pointed towards her and people who try to attack, and up dying or fainting before they reach her...
And, as some of you may have realized, she has a strange mental effect on people where they become susceptible to whatever she wants. Autumn is not excluded from this.
For those who don't know yet. For every chapter of this story, I make a drawing. If you're interested in seeing these drawings. I have placed a link to my portfolio website in my description. (v
Preview chapter 7:
Autumn keeps following with Mary, despite her better judgment. At the same time, MTF is closing in.
(Shortened) scp file of the chapter: (This is an OC. This file does not exist in the scp wiki.)
Item#: SCP-5899 (Lucky girl)
Object Class: Keter
Containment:
SCP-5899 is to be kept in a secure 9 by 9 cubic meter holding cell with a contacted bathroom, table, bed, computer (under NO circumstances is there a connection to internet) and at least 10 plush toys, video games and comics to its choice.
All 8 doors to containment cell are to be checked and maintained at least 7 times a day. In case a door is faulty, this must be fixed immediately. Any reasonable requests from SCP-5899 are to be granted to prevent scp from leaving containment. A minimum of 15 guards must be stationed outside at all time.
If SCP-5899 tries to leave containment, under NO circumstances is brute force allowed to be used, as this may trigger a domino effect. (See Addendum: 5899-2.) Instead, SCP-5899 must be convinced to return to containment on its own accord. Good behavior is to be rewarded for this purpose. SCP-5899 is to be given food by choice three times a day. Actors given the role of 'friend' are to engage in a social interaction with SCP-5899 at least 3 times a day.
Description:
SCP-5899 is an Caucasian female of European descent, age 17, 183 cm tall, weighting 70 kg, dark brown hair, brown eyes. SCP-5899 claims to be from [REDACTED, but to date no record of such a place exiting has been found.
SCP-5899 is a powerful reality bender who subconsciously creates a phenomenon were events or circumstances will always go in its favor. Though it claims to just be 'lucky'.
This 'Luck' however does not apply to those around SCP-5899, often causing individuals near SCP-5899 to get hurt in the process of these events. SCP-5899 does not seem to be aware of its abnormal properties, or what it does to those around it.
SCP-5899 has a IQ of 80 and often behaves like a child. It is unusually dense and easy to fool, following this observation protocol 'Friend' was established. It appears to be unable to understand concepts like death, pain, imprisonment, danger or misfortune. Often saying things like, "Why is he sleeping on the ground?" and "What is that red stuff?".
———
Addendum, 5899-1:
SCP-5899 was given a lottery ticket (with was checked beforehand to be a losing lot) and was instructed to open it.
Results: SCP-5899 opened the ticket like asked. Ticket was converted through anomale's means into the winning lot. Proving that SCP-5899 possesses realty bending abilities. Further study of this theory is required.
Addendum, 5899-2:
On [REDACTED] 2013, SCP-5899 broke containment in the attempt to leave site. Guards instructed to keep SCP-5899 from leaving became hostile, firing their weapons with the intention to keep SCP-5899 from leaving.
Results: This behavior triggered a chain reaction of [DATA EXPUNGED]. There were no survivors.
Addendum, 5899-3:
D-9983 has been instructed to try and shoot SCP-5899. D-9983 seems anxious but proceeds to do as told. D-9983 points gun towards SCP-5899, who seems to be confused by this gesture.
Results: The gun became unable to fire. D-9983 reacts agitated by this and tries to attack SCP-5899 barehand. This caused D-9983 to [EXPIRED].
