CHAPTER 6
Jane managed to scarper past the paparazzi. She was annoyed with herself. She expected this to happen but even though she expected it the reality was completely different. She felt she had let herself down and most importantly let her guard down. She was upset but with no one other than herself. She could hear the lad's voices down the precinct running through her mind, it made her whole body cringe but she didn't cringe at that as much as she did at the thought of her planting her lips on Maura yesterday.
The drive to the White House seemed like it took forever and a day to complete. It was a drive full of silence yet the loudest drive Jane had ever experienced. Her mind was racing, she felt nothing but disappointment.
Jane finally arrived at the White House, she jumped out the car and straightened her suit, attempting to get rid of the creases and crumples created throughout the drive there. She headed straight towards the Oval office where she knew Maura would be working. She felt like everyone was staring at her but in fact no one was. This wasn't the first time something like this had been blown up into something it never was and it probably, almost definitely wouldn't be the last.
Jane strutted up the corridor like she had no worries, even though her mind was now racing about what she was going to say to Maura. Jane was normally a confident woman who worried about not much yet here she was being brought to her knees by a 5 foot nothing woman. She had her lip trembling.
'I'll just quit, I'll just go back to Boston, and it'll be fine.' Was the main thought invading her brain. 'Just go in and pretend that the kiss didn't happen, just forget about it and hopefully Maura had forgotten about it too.' Was the second most popular sentence.
"Hi, Lorraine, is Maura- I mean Madame President about?" Jane asked Lorraine who was sitting at her desk with her head down like she was avoiding eye contact with Jane. Lorraine considered warning Jane about the mood that Maura was in but decided against it and thought she'd let her see for herself.
"Tell your reporter that it is slander and I will be filing a lawsuit against your newspaper!" Maura screamed down the phone, as Lorraine opened the door to the Oval Office, Maura could be heard clear and loud throughout the office.
"Um, Madam President?" Lorraine said quietly as she opened the door as Maura's phone call was brought to an abrupt end.
"What is it, Lorraine?" Maura screached. This took both Jane and Lorraine aback. "Lorraine, I'm so sorry, it's been a morning. I really am sorry. Is everything ok?"
"Yes, Miss Rizzoli is here to see you. Shall I send her in?" Lorraine asked, trying to avoid eye contact with Maura or Jane.
"Yes, please, send her in." Maura said, her attitude suddenly softening. A slight smile appearing on her face that didn't go unnoticed by Lorraine nor Jane.
"Oh, someone is in a mood." Jane laughed nervously, trying to lighten the mood a little bit in true Jane banter style.
"Oh, no, I, uh, just think what the newspaper articles are saying about me…" Maura paused for a second before saying the next word, she contemplated whether to say it or not. "Us." She said softly looking at Jane but not looking her in the eye.
"Us?" Jane said, raising an eyebrow. 'I guess her forgetting about the kiss is out the window.' Jane thought to herself.
"Well, yes, you and I?" Maura replied, as if it was a question rather than a statement.
"Maura, they will find something else to talk about next week." Jane replied, trying to reassure Maura. "Then they will have forgotten all about us." Jane smiled.
"Do you want to forget about us?" Maura asked, now looking serious and starring Jane straight in the eye.
Jane was taken back for a moment and there was a slight awkwardness in the air. Neither woman said anything until Maura started speaking again.
"Anyway, what did you want to see me for?" Maura couldn't handle the awkward silence any longer, she needed to say something.
"Uh, just to see if you were ok. I'm going to go back to my office now." Jane said as she quickly darted out the room leaving Maura standing by herself, unsure of where to go next.
Later on that evening, Maura went online to check Jane's working schedule. She shouldn't have but she did. She noticed that there was an emergency holiday request put in and Jane had logged out for the next few days. Maura sighed.
"Addison, I'm coming to stay. I'm on my way." Jane text Addison, she knew she didn't have to wait until Addison replied, Jane had a key to her house after all.
Once Jane had arrived Addison had Jane a glass bottle of beer freshly opened and waiting on the table. "What's happened?" Addison asked knowing something had to have happened for Jane to upsticks and leave work and her life behind for a few days. This wasn't their first rodeo.
"I kissed her." Jane said, the words were out of her mouth before she knew it. She couldn't take it back. Addison was now the third person in the world to know and hopefully the last.
"No, you kissed HER?" Addison replied emphasising on the word 'her,' whilst doing the most childish little squeal you could imagine.
"Yes, HER, The President of the United States of America, Maura Isles, DR Maura Isles." Jane said without taking a breath and quickly taking a large drink of her beer. "And, I want to do it again and again and again." Jane added before quickly finishing her beer.
"Oh my goodness. This. Is. NEWS!" Addison replied, she was more shocked than anything but at the same time not surprised. She knew there was something between them but wasn't sure Jane would act upon it. Addison had a lightbulb moment. "Wait!" She exclaimed before putting her hand on top of Jane's in anticipation. "Doesn't she have a husband?" Addison asked whilst raising a perfectly arched eyebrow.
"Oh, Addison, don't!" Jane replied, she cringed, every nerve in her body cringed. "Yes." She added softly not being able to look Addison in the eye.
"What are you going to do?" Addison replied, unable to think of anything else to say. Out of all the things Jane and Addison have been through together over the last 3 decades this beat the lot. They had never been in a position this groundbreaking before. Addison was officially lost for words of any sort of helpful advice.
"Drink?" The brunette said as she held up her beer awaiting Addison knocking her glass of wine against Jane's beer bottle in a cheers motion. Jane sighed and continued looking ahead at Addison's beach view.
Over on the other side of town, in Washington DC. Maura was pacing her office back and forth. She was unsure of where Jane was and when or if she was coming back. Maura had never felt such a sinking feeling in her heart. She had text Jane but still no reply. She was frantically checking her phone, unlocking it and locking it again.
Maura threw her phone down on the sofa in frustration as Edward walked in the door. He never knocked. In his mind he was above knocking because in his mind he was above Maura. Maura had accepted this for years regardless of her intelligence that meant nothing in this abusive relationship. Maura would never see it as abusive and she wouldn't dare talk about it with anyone. Therefore, no one had ever told her it was that way.
"Where is your girlfriend?" He said taunting her. He had found a weakness that he never knew she had. Now he had it and he was intent on using it to his advantage.
"Oh, not now." Maura replied, picking her phone back up before Edward could get to it. "What are you doing here?" Maura replied, snapping at him.
"I came to see you, these headlines, what the fuck, Maura?" Edward snapped back even harder. "The whole country, hell, the whole world is questioning who this woman is!" He added, shouting louder and louder.
"Yes, I know." Maura simply replied before looking at her phone, there was an email in from Jane. Maura sighed and began walking out. "Lorraine, get the plane ready, I'm going to Malibu." Maura shouted as she walked out.
"What the fuck are you going to Malibu for?" Edward shouted, walking after her.
"You are not coming." Maura simply replied before turning on her six-inch-heels.
Edward ran after her before grabbing her arm.
"Sir, we do not touch the President of the United States." Maura's secret service agent said as he laid a hand on Edward. Edward was angry to the point where if you could, you would see the steam coming out of his ears.
Jane had consumed one too many beers to care about the outside world. Her phone was chucked to the side and Addison and herself were laughing about the 'good old days,' listening to the sounds of the waves crashing hard against the sand. Addison loved her house but she missed 'home,' she missed the busy streets of Boston and most of all wished she was in Washington with Jane so they could do this every night. Addison and Jane both had busy lives so catching up with each other was rare. Very rare. So, when the occasion happened both ladies soaked it up despite the circumstances.
"No, remember when I worked at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and Derek got in the lift with Meredith and Mark? Oh, Jane, I wanted to DIE!" Addison cackled as Jane laughed on.
"I honestly wish nothing more than that I was there to witness that!" Jane laughed as she took a massive gulp of her beer.
Addison's phone flashed up. "Oh who's messaging me at this time?" Addison rolled her eyes. It was getting into the early hours of the morning. "Oh, Jane." Addison said her voice suddenly became serious.
"What is it?" Jane said, raising an eyebrow whilst drunkenly squinting her eyes.
"It's twitter, you know how it gives you the news headlines?" Addison replied.
"Uh, I think so?" Jane scoffed.
"Well, apparently the President of the United States…" Addison started before Jane cut her off.
"Oh, what about her?" Jane said, rolling her eyes.
"She's in Malibu." Addison replied before beginning to cackle with laughter.
"Oh, fuck." Jane simply replied before downing her beer.
